Title: Grand Junction (challenge, w.mods, railroad)
Post by: traceyfields on October 26, 2017, 12:49:13 AM
challenge set to myself. adam and eve start (cc). v.large map, cc bleak mountains, harsh, object to connect north, south, east and west with railroads (choochoo mod).

"rules":
permitted mods: @kralyerg 's mega-mod and others for flavour including, of course, @RedKetchup 's choochoo mod - without which i could not have started this idea!  :) ;)
"adam & eve" cart as a starting point, all four sides of the map must be connected with a double railroad in less than 100 years.
no trading ports. none at all! (no access to seeds or livestock)
tunnels, wherever possible, must be built. use of terraforming tool generally restricted to 6-9 squares, avoid making large cuttings.
the company allow you to build a maximium of two supply trains (choochoo mod).
game "ends" when last pin is put in place, or time runs out.

challenge successfully completed in 87 years

the game was nearly burned when "eve" died in childbirth after just 2 children, this makes for a ridiculously hard start. i bit the bullet and decided to accept nomads, and hey... nobody showed up. stupid, fickle nomads...  ::)
built the first station and train and immediately started trading for domestic animals. most of the food production was powered by milk, tough on lactose intolerant bannies, but stuff 'em, i'm an evil, cruel railroad robber baroness and they can suffer.

first picture: grand junction central
the towering residences of @kid1293 (stonehousesaddon) are instantly stunning, this is a game changing mod, beautifully created and, whilst placing the higher floors/levels is tricky at first, they allow dense populations of bannies in tightly restricted areas, which is what "bleak mountains" throws at you. i used all three varients on this map. picture shows the rail interchange in the centre of the map.

 :D Very nice picture!

I never thought those towers would be useful.
It was more a test - Can this be done?

Thanks for sharing! :)

edit - Try 'Nomad Sign' to make nomads come even if you have a very low population.

Title: hunter's graveyard
Post by: traceyfields on October 26, 2017, 01:49:37 AM
kid's new hedged graveyard makes a welcome cheap graveyard, seen next to the up line towards the junction. a luckless hunter was the first arrival! an early death is hard to get over, and the vanilla stone graveyard is hard to justify early in a game for precious stone, and a wood option is a relief to troubled bannies!  :)

@kid1293 the towers work beautifully. i had an unexpected crash when a fire started in one of them, i will test this again later when i have some spare time, via the debug menu. they are awesome though, and i would love to see more options on the first floor businesses - maybe a supermarket, a herbalist (doctor's surgery?), a walk-in health clinic/hospital, anything which bannies genarally need in a residential area? :)

this shows the milk production centre next to Red creamery and more of kid's tower blocks (i love the pink colour version :) )
domestic animals are bought via one of the trains and the outgoing stations sell off surplus firewood, feathers and cheese. trains are an excellent alternative to the usual trading post -- but you need to earn those coins first, it is an super idea for building trading into the game and the choo-choo mod does this really well.
Title: the last pin! :)

and just to finish the set - the winning shot of the last pin going into the tracks! :)

challenge complete in 87 years from adam and eve.

@kid1293 thanks for the tip! :) i will look for that.
i don't often invite nomads -- but in a tight squeeze i will resort to inviting them, even if they are thick as bricks and bringing their horrible diseases with them!  :o

@traceyfields - I you manage to recreate the crash when there is a fire in tower,
please post and tell me. I may have to make them fireproof. :)
I think it has to do with them being all ghosted. No footprint in game.

@kid1293  i set light to my current game :o (i'm such an arsonist!), and re-created the crash, here are the before and after screenshots

edit:
you can see the smoked windows in the right hand 2nd story window. all the 1st floor buildings are businesses (which is so cool! :) ) and the fire had no other place to start.

edit: maybe make them fire-proof. modern looking tower blocks should have sprinkler systems in place. q.v. the Grenfell Tower fire disaster this year, which would not have happened if a sprinkler system had been installed. :(

You have infected me with the arsony bug. :)

I have made a solution by making them not ghosted.
They are now buildable on road and with that comes a footprint
that is missing from a ghosted building. Now the fire works.

The picture shows a test. I will change all tower buildings and release
an update.

I must thank you @traceyfields for finding this. It is a much bigger problem
than I first thought. Ghosted residental buildings are maybe not possible.

:)

I am so glad you made the pink toned tower buildings, Kid.  They are similar to the housing development (named Pomonok) that was across the street from my college, in Queens, NYC.  http://forgotten-ny.com/2006/01/pomonok-queens/elect/
