Beautiful shots, @Paeng. I'm a little scared by your hospitals, but, hey, why not live dangerously.

A large band of nomads has settled at the town's fringes...
They don't care much for roads...

Their crops are tobacco and some other green leafy substance...

Their herbalist raises some outlandish herbs as well...

He's also got ideas about 'waste management'...

I noticed some different textures on your walkways in the first set of pictures. Did you make those (I recall your great walkway textures from SimCity) or are they mods that are available to us all?

i really really want to thank you @Paeng  ! your screenshots always giving me a nice and helpful idea of what my mod and all its buildings bring to the game.
definitely : A MUST and a dedication to the look of this game. I feel, without it (Medieval Town), the game is just fade and insignificance.

So THANKS YOU for all your lovely screenshots :)

question : this is the new Cathedral size ? how you like it ? was the changes better ?
did it took more longer to make, although you seems to have a full developped size city...  ?

Yeah, once they brought in the little ships I pestered them no end for a draw bridge...
I just could not stand the "logical" mistake of all these ships being locked in by (static) bridges...   :o

Lovely, I don't know the word "Tuckeyes" but the picture gives some very good clues; sweets for the eyes (I hope I interpret it somehow right). The drawbridge at the canalend is clever; it hides the difference of color between the canal and the lake.  :)

Thanks Nilla  :)

Well, you are right in the sense that my towns are always supposed to be "sweets for the eyes" - eye candy  ;)

On the other hand I'm awful at making up names, so I usually take what Banished throws at me... often that makes for rather weird names, but sometimes -as with Tuckeyes- I get lucky...   :D

Well, you already did a good job tweaking the water, from the first time I used it... to me, if anything at all I'd maybe soften everything to the light blue part, so it looks a bit less choppy...  ;)

What I really really want though is another curve - that 90° corner is just too harsh...

Or if that is too much to model, the rounded part could also be like a partial octagon or such (like the towers for your walls)...

In any case, I feel that the canal curves would look a lot more 'organic'...  :)

* Plus, if the player sets two of them like an S-curve, it basically works like a large diagonal as well...

My only 'advantage' is that I do beta-test upcoming CC-releases... so here I use the beta terrain "Marsh" and a few beta buildings and props... everything else is quite regular...?  :)

Public places with gastronomy need public toilets.
You have 6 hours to arrange that or the regulatory agency has to veil a fine of 8 gold guilders plus 10 silver pfennig per each additional hour of misbehavior.

Great! I'm curious to what you will make with the tequila and the mission.

You just let me know if there is anything you need for the mission!
I was just about to test it with the tequila mod but I think I follow
your thread instead. Seems like a lot of fun.

Two small things:
I use tanypredator's New Flora mod (I know it will clash with CC).
Her linenweaver is perfect with the mission.
-and-
Discrepancy's Small Village mod has excellent bee-hives and mead brewer
for the thirsty missionaries. :)

Hey  :)  Glad you like it... it's a fine set to work with!

Quote from: kid1293 on September 25, 2016, 03:00:06 PMwhat you will make with the tequila and the mission

Curious that - I'm in year 70+, but have not been offered Agave seeds from any trader... :o
Could you mod an option to let the Agave trader bring these seeds?

As for additional items - I'd love some that break the loooong straight lines of the mission... like the school, which has that little "step" in the roof, that looks great... I'd also love an octagonal pergola that can fit seamlessly with the housing/passage parts... anything to bring some movement into the right angles... naturally, a diagonal module comes to my mind... :-X   ;D

See how I used RedK's washing place? More stuff along that line (decorations) would be nice... maybe some small scale agricultural items, more for gardening, or small scale tiny industries (chicken pen, veg gardens, cottage type industry).
And a tiny chapel we can place a bit on the side, maybe by a cemetery... for contemplating the woes of this world...  ;)

Oh well... just some food for thoughs - you got me started on this...   8)

Quotetanypredator's New Flora mod and <snip> Discrepancy's bee-hives and mead brewer

Yeah, I know... to be honest, I'm a bit chicken these days when it comes to chains that double or triple already existing functions... takes me a while to test them in different conditions and mod mixes... with honey and beekeepers I already have a small problem (doubled profession, nothing critical), and honey is really important in my set-ups (candles and mead).

Also, Discrepancy's sets are so enormous and versatile, I'm still in the process of digesting it all  ;D  (which is NOT a complaint!), and I think I'm already two updates behind...

* Btw: I never had any problems with trader's not stopping because of the bridges (which I use extensively)...

I will check tonight!

QuoteI'd love some that break the loooong straight lines of the mission...

I would love that too. I'll go through my option and see if I can come up with something.
2-floor TownHall, Hostel or something. I sure have a lot of Town Halls  :-\
But one or two hostels, 4 families with 4 persons.

About production. My first idea when starting this was a distillery. It's not historically accurate,
more the product of a secluded monastery. Farming and green things? What can be done?

Maybe a shrine. But to what purpose? Only decoration?
Happiness at least. But we know from Nilla that it does not matter very much.

;D NO DIAGONAL BUILDINGS!!!  ;D
Title: Re: Sightseeing In Banished Land

Another happy,banished hour. :)
Oh yes, the trader brings agave seeds.
Many load-reload and finally ta-ta (fanfare)!

If you use CC there are MANY kind of goods coming to the trade ports.
Maybe that's why it takes so long.
I had vanilla game+tequila. It took 40-50 reloads.

I don't want to bring seeds to the tequila trader. He will bring all sorts...

I'm thinking about mission buildings. I will sleep on it.

Very nice!

These "dull" potato/cabbage/bean-fields look great in these surroundings. Everything looks better, when it's not quite so crowded, as I use to build. :) Geographically the mixture of houses would never have been found on the same place; I mean the red houses and the half timbered houses. But that doesn't matter at all. Besides, I see on the flag at the schoolhouse, that we are in Scotland, and they can steal anything, without getting "out of style"! ;)

And I think Nordic design is clear and functional without much frills. This style is also well hit in this story. But with more charm and in another dimension of screenshotting. Sorry @Nilla.^^ It was very nice to see the work of I don't know how many hours together with the beauty and well fitting buildings of the other modders. Thank you!

I recognize the lack of different housing and decorations... Will be a focus in the next versions.

Not sorry @Tom Sawyer, be happy! It's the truth. I can't achieve something like this. That's also the reason, I like to look at settlements from other people :)

And @pang; I don't "fight"with you. I love it the way you mix the styles. If I want a geographically correct picture of the North, I can look out of my window. ;)

I didn't know what to say. Usually, I don't get a village this large. Mods changes mean I have to start a new town and, in this case, I thought to post a screenshot before starting anew because of the new changes in small rowhouse.

Hi!  I would love to know which mod gives you the flowering trees (magnolia and the purple flowered one...)...????  Thanks!!!

Well actually that's a long story. I made the textures for those trees but they haven't been released as a completed mod yet. They are based on CC trees and Kralyerg is working on the final release. I gave him over 150 tree, bush, and flower textures back in August. I don't know when they will be ready for release.

Kral has already included some of them in megamod, but if you don't use megamod you can use my beta test file (attached) instead. It's not a final release but I've been using it for ages without any problems. But do remember that adding mods to an existing game can cause problems, so use at your own risk.  :)  This isn't an official final release so I won't create a special thread for it here on WOB.

The trees and plants are free to build and are purely decorative. They have no function in the game. They can't be built on road tiles, only on empty ground. You can delete them with the "remove buildings" tool. I made them to add a bit of colour to the Banished world. They certainly aren't perfect but I quite like them.  :)

The test file above is the second one that Kralyerg made for me. It doesn't have all of my plants in it - you will find more in megamod - but out of the two test files this one has the most variety.

There definitely won't be 150 different plants, at least not anytime soon. Most of them are just colour variations of the same plant. For example, 30 maples (3 different trunk/branch colours and 10 different leaf colours), 13 tulips, 8 wisterias, 4 willows. That's already over 50 with only 4 different plants. Many of them I haven't yet seen in game even as a test, so when they do get released it's possible that some of them won't be very nice. It's all guess work until you see them in the game.

I'm not a 3D modeller and as I said, these are all based on CC trees, so they aren't my 3D models. Kral is kindly putting it all together but it takes time.

.... I've thought about it - well the possibilities of making a mod like that...

Banished to another planet?
... altering all of the banished world to an alien landscape. It would be limited though, as the modkit is, the basis of game-play would still be the same. Gathering something for food. I suppose we could loose gathering for food though.

There are lots of thoughts to be thought though on how this could be achieved!

too many for me now, I have all my other banished modding to get out the way first.
alien world can wait.

we cant make a lamp post as huge as an house lol. they are at good size, and the flame inside is even a bit bigger than should be but still very good as size.
all the problem is that game doesnt zoom in enough to appreciate the work and the details we put in :(

thats a shame because pretty sure the game can handle it, can handle a +25% - +50% more zoom in and i dont know why it is not.
we need people spamming the developper and asking better closer zoom. ^^

looks great together :)

how you liked it ? and hows about the new animated road lamp posts ? ^^

(once a mod is posted, i never get comments on how people found these mods^^)

I hate the days when I am AFK @RedKetchup , I know I pester you & the other modders for items, but, when I'm AFK, I also don't feel like I can support you & all the work everyone does.
I always try & remember to stop back when I download something, but, lately ...  I'm sorry for that.  Please know though that even when I am quiet, or not around, I am wanting to be here waving my hands and offering encouragement. :)

I may have snuck some data use from hubby's work connection and downloaded the latest mods last night, so I can try them out.
Looks like I won't have data again for another 2 weeks, I am arguing with the company now who said I would have it this week, and it's not happening.  *annoyed
Gah, I'm shopping around, I need my internet!!  LOL

Personally, I like them ghosted - because that way they can be used just about everywhere, for different purposes, decorations and so on. Plus I like the way we can demolish via the trash can, for tricky layouts that is a big help...  ;)

If you put in a fixed stone road, there is no possibility to choose a different ground for those pathways - it will always be that one stone road, right (?)...

But hey, I'm not married to that idea... if you see a good reason or think that's the better way, I can also live with an un-ghosted set...  :)

bah real 1x1 road needs a trash can too. the only diff is you cant build in middle of another building footprint unless it is a road tile too.
ghosted cannot let a footprint cause it is 0x0 tiles.

well, yeah - when I scroll into an area with fodder, things slow down quite a bit...  ;)

So far I don't mind, I just use the minimap to jump in and out... and 1 fodder circle gives plenty anyway, I don't see a need to build more than one  :)

to plant food there is no problem, the problem is they arent allowed to harvest it. asap it is written "edible" in the flag of the resource, they arent allowed to harvest it.
you would need a combo foresters planter -  gatherer harvester.

@brads3 (Stiles), Kral has a mod that allows different fruit trees, you just need a forester and a harvester.

I'd love to see more in the future @RedKetchup especially for those of us who always suck with our seeds, haha.
I don't think I've had a good pasture or orchard seed in ages and have to rely on Kral's mods.
You could do a full mod like his, ohhhhhhhhhhhh my ...  i'd be in blackberry heaven.

i know QUERY. it is in the journey. but i find the circles too large and it specifies the type of orchard. i did try to overlap several different foresters the other day. the smaller gatherers don't work with those trees, including necora's vanilla. and i didn't get the payoff i was hoping for even after 5-10 years of waiting for growth. not saying i want it overpowering. but with all the other items a gatherer finds the the odds of picking up the orchard fruits lessens. seems the gatherer would get only 2 of the new fruits per yr and in small amounts. plus that set is limited to trees and grapes. i was thinking more like strawberry, black, blue berry, and some apple and maple trees.
NECORA;S maple forester does better especially on payoff. but the version i have has sap coded different than CC so i have to have 2 forests plus several buildings just to get to the syrup. the boiler uses charcoal only.
the fodder does make the game look better than the flat ground we have. i was trying to think of ways to get different plants both for looks and food. then you could have a bushy meadow around the housing and storage center and add the larger forests outside of it.

yeah i agree and it was my main goal when i did it ^^ (not to have the new resource.... but i used it as an excuse ^^)

there is certainly a way to improve it by randonly ask to plant some grass, some bushes, some flowers, some herbs, some mushrooms, some different wild species.... some berries....

hehe

In other news, these pictures are why I had thought of a splash screen mod with artists and village builders works also shown, amazingly talented screenshots, and the ridiculous patience you have to use the camera tool!  Me, I'm hope with "zoom in, zoom out" haha.

Love these shots, I love the mods, but seeing how people use them is always exciting for me.  :D

What are the map details @Paeng ?  I want to step out from my Valleys / CC Very Large / Forest, but haven't found one I must love.  Either not enough hills, nor enough water (so no plains ones for me).

Nothing special, a small valleys map... normally, I use medium maps, and I always want a mix with some hills, I "hate" completely flat maps...  :D

Same for large or xtra large maps, I simply don't have a need for them - for 5 to 900 peeps a medium map is more than sufficient... except maybe the occasional CC Marsh where land is rare...  :)

Not so bad really... the hardest were the "sloped" pieces - just find a space with a clear view of things and a suitably graded shoreline...

Then rotate the lots (press "T") to see their direction and push them up and down the grades, you'll see where they vanish below the ground. Repeat that with all the different heights.

Next I used the leveller to prepare a grade from high down to low and filled that with the corresponding slope pieces.

Last were the turbulence pieces... and "dressing the set" with rocks and boulders.

The surface water is easy, compared to that - set a rough outline with the edge and corner pieces first, then fill with the full tiles... remember to rotate those often, so they don't "tile" too much...

Not much delete and repeat involved in all this... but then, I'm an "old hand" at this type of work, that's where I really zen out  ;)

On my quick play-through yesterday I did not notice any problems... as for numbers - hopefully Nilla has some time to look at them, I usually look at my gut instead... LOL

I slightly tweak a few image conditions -

brightness -5, contrast +10, saturation +5, unsharp mask 20%

In photoshop I just recorded a so-called "action" (basically a macro) and can apply all these changes with one click (for consistency's sake)... but you can do the tweaking in any image editor, even though it may not have the macro function...

* and play around with those values, you may want to emphasize different things than I do   :)

On fully zoomed out scenes (hazy) you can apply the "action" two or even three times, which then over-saturates a bit but cuts a lot of the "fog of war"...  ;)

It's always a glorious day in a modders world (and us, the end consumer), when our biggest (non)Complaint is that there are new goodies!  You handled yourself well though, love that new dock look!

Thanks for sharing your settings too.
I know I often suggest bugs or issues that should've been picked up by Luke and fixed, but ...  man ...  a good camera angle, if nothing else, but to really get in close and see the detail on the modders work.  Even last night I tried to get in close to see some of Necora's pine items and had to have my nose pressed to the monitor, such a shame.  :(

Would also make your more interesting with screenshots :)

@Paeng very pretty spot indeed. Going thru my mod list I saw a mod you may be interested it.  I remember somewhere you said about not liking looks of deleted mine.  There is a "delete quarry and mines" mod by Draethar on Banishedinfo site that leaves usable terrain once mines and quarries are deleted.

Nice atmosphere and cool light spots. :)

Playing around with light settings some time ago I made a night scenario just for fun. It even can include ambient sounds and to switch in and out of a running game. But actually a useless thing. You cannot really play then.

@Paeng I know that this is a post-game screenshot edit, but it makes me feel like I'm in the game, at night.

"* I so wish Banished had a night cycle..."

I too wish there was a night cycle!!  ....  ugh ... I know Luke needs to do structural things first, but if he ever decides to come back to Banished for a solid few months of updates, this would be on my 'wishlist' and it should have been done in the first release!!

I wonder ...  could a dark lighting be coded in, like the Winter growth is?   So when Winter comes, the game darkens, and the lamps and fires then have more of a role rather than just 'prettiness'.

@Tom Sawyer how did you manage it?

Title: Re: Sightseeing In Banished Land
Post by: Tom Sawyer on May 13, 2017, 03:35:13 AM
@QueryEverything It is just some changing of light values and not a big deal but I guess in Photoshop it's much easier to create effects like this for cool screens. The fire for example would be dark and not noticeable because it's not a source of light in game.

About day night cycle I watched a review about Forest Village some time ago and the author was just annoyed by this feature. In Banished it would mean to have 7 sec day .. 7 sec night .. 7 sec day already on speed 1. You would get a commercial break every 7 seconds but you cannot go to get a new beer in this frequence.^^ And on speed 10 it would be an unbearable flicker. ;D

Thanks for the explanation @Tom Sawyer and as someone who plays on 10x for the most part of the day, and suffers from a form of flickernausea (known now as Flicker Vertigo) (thankfully not seizures), I couldn't stand the idea of "on/off; on/off", which is why I was musing upon the idea of darkening during Winter only ...

Bah ...  maybe those who read this and developing their own games, have a think about optional day/night cycles or brightness is dependent on the seasons.  :)  And remember us Southern Hemi people have reverse cycles (thank goodness for the awesome mod to change the seasons to Aussie time, haha ...

Back to this ...  you are right.  :D

i am not sure how much bytes it will be as standalone. And i will have to think if i include it in the light version.
but as FULL version, i maybe added 20-30MB ?
the thing is , all the textures are already inside FULL and Light versions. the textures are the most big part of a mod size

That sounds reasonable...  :)

I think a decent set of docks will always be needed and used by most players, no matter what setting or mood they play.

The "danger" of rolling too many things into one unified mod is that players then cannot use the Docks unless they play with RK ECE  :)

* in other words: if a mod is used in almost every setting by almost every player, it really shouts to be standalone.

there are grids, but also something many do is they place 3-4 same building next to the other which is really bad for the "looking alive"

Yes, agreed... also many people don't consider to rotate their pieces; if you plop the same house over and over, facing the same direction - you're on the best way to the grid  ;)  Once you start rotating your pieces, each door faces another direction, so you tend to build more in clusters than straight rows.

Another thing I do is to spread things out in the early stages... no 'main street', no 'town center' - rather I make small clusters of 1 or 2 or 3 houses around workplaces (forester, gatherer, fisher), which already spreads your settlement naturally.

Once I have the place for my first market, I slowly start to draw houses in towards that position... So my way is to build slowly from the outside inwards, instead from the inside out  ;)

Hth  :)

but also, if you line 6-8 woodcutters... then 6-8 blackmiths in face of 6-8 foundry..... along with 6-8 stockpiles...
it totally start to lose its "natural" and starting to look like a production structure.

Post by: Paeng on November 08, 2018, 02:25:18 PM
I couldn't leave this town yet...  :D

So I decided to build a large wonder to finish it off nicely...

First I strengthened the homestead in the northwest into a full hamlet, with a small market, a new stone bridge and another miller and grain fields...

Then I cleared some space and extended the hamlet towards that direction... and after some serious hauling, construction began!  ;)
* which took long enough to re-forest the hamlet!

Quote from: brads3 on November 15, 2018, 07:33:12 AMis this a DS primary map?

No, that's from Kid, I'm pretty sure... though not too sure what exact pack its in  :-[  With some packs by Kid it's hard to tell, because he sometimes changes stuff around...  :P  My guess would be the trees come with the Swamp Things or the Old Pirate set... Normally I don't really like dense, dark forests that much - but in this setting they came out nice. Note that basically all the trees are replaced by some sort of grass, so most of the trees are grown by and by, after cutting loads of grass - that stuff really fights for its life  :D...

That basic ground is a standalone from CC.

Not sure what problem you have with the DS piles... note though that I only use the straight replacement, basically just graphics - for functionality here I use RK's stockpiles.  :)

Thank you all!  :D

Yeah, I really like to work with angled buildings... this one is still a bit rough, actually Disc set them up so they can be positioned quite exact, so they really follow a "curve"... but after so many "destroy and rebuild" I got slightly impatient LOL...

Just a matter of practice, really...  :)
