Mayor's Report:
Esopus lost 2 more of its founding fathers last year with the deaths of Ranson Aarden and Thadd Eikenboom. Though they never held elected office, they were vital contributors to the early growth and prosperity of the town.

A mystery bug caused the destruction of two of the pear orchards. It will take years to recover from their loss. Pear Cider production will be diminished until the groves can be regrown.

Coal is also in short supply. It is not yet interfering with the surplus and production of tools, but it will need to be addressed. Wood is also in short supply. The trips to bring logs back to town are growing longer, but the demand continues to grow. The first building dedicated to producing logs should be ready near year's end on the island.

Xzavie Eikenboom retained his council seat, running unopposed in last year's election.

We have a large graduating class this year. It may be 10 students joining the ranks of educated adults. We will need to build more houses to continue to expand.

Relations with English remain unchanged. There are rumors that big changes are on the way, but news from the royal court is as sparse as it ever was.

Mayor's Report:
Coillison Fortuin, true to his word, did not seek another term on the town council. A 3 way race developed early in the election, with Callison's son Glorin finally being convinced to run alongside Ballan Geleen and Raynardo Aarden. In a very close race, it was Ballan who won the day in the runoff election after Raynardo was eliminated in the first round. Only 3 votes separated winner from loser after the final count.

The lack of firewood and coal reserves loom large. Rationing has been implemented and the production of tools slowed until more resources can be gathered. Development on the island should proceed unabated, as we add a forestry lodge, herbalist and housing.

Food reserves are also lower, though not nearing a critical level yet. More production should help to restock after the recent shortfalls. After a year of light trading, the ports have been restocked with good for export should the right deals come along. Trade may be limited, though, as the provinces and colonies are being realigned by Kng James II. We expect news on how we shall be affected by years' end.

Mayor's Report:
Esopus lost a true champion this last year with the passing of Evelt de Jonckheer. Under nearly 40 years of his leadership, a small colony on a riverbank has blossomed into a bustling center of commerce... a valued stop on the river between Albany and New York City. Though I think there are many younger men who could and should fill this position, I, Andro Haak, accepted the will of the people to lead until an election could be held after the harvest is completed. I've tasked the young men who would like to lead to use this year to showcase themselves to the community. Of all the candidates, I believe Hezekiel, the eldest son of our founder, would be the wisest choice. Many of the eldest sons of the founders have stepped up to be leaders in their own right.

While a lingering sadness does hang over the community, we're expecting our largest ever wave of births this year, with more than a half dozen women due before mid-year.

The firewood and coal problems have not yet been solved. Current production of firewood is not able to meet the demand, and some production has suffered. We will begin construction of a third port in expectation of the arrival of a whaling fleet late this year or early next year.

Raynardo Aarden was elected to fill the seat I used to hold. He ran unopposed. I have proposed, and the council is debating, one change to our current system. I would like to open leadership to any man who arrive here before he starts his education, provided he obtains his education here and has reached 25 years of age. Many fine families have settled here in Esopus. I believe they deserve a say in how our town is run.

The English, though, have other ideas. New York has been conglomerated into the Dominion of New England. Our new governor, Sir Edmond Andros, has banned council meetings except for once a year to hold elections. Needless to say, tempers are high and relations with the outside world very strained. All the freedoms we have won in the last four decades have seemingly been wiped away by one popish madman.

There have been rumblings, unconfirmed stories from some of the traders, that King James has fled the throne after an invasion force from the Netherlands landed in England. These stories have buoyed hope among the locals that all may not be lost here.

Town Historian's Report:
As expected, Hezekiel de Jonckheer, son of our founder Evelt, was overwhelmingly elected to hist first five year term in office. Xzavie Eikenboom was also re-elected to a 3 year term on the council.
The New Year sees an end to our firewood and coal stock issues, as a trader pulled into port just as I began writing this year's recap of last year's events. We were able to trade mead, candles, wine and wool for heating fuel, stone, coal and logs.

This year, aggressive expansion is planned, with many more houses, a new port, and a new wharf for our whaling fleet to be built. We've been told to expect a large wave of settlers from New York sometime in the summer. We'll also be conducting our third census at the end of the year.

The stories of late 1688 were confimed. We have not only a new king and queen, William III and Mary II due to what some have dubbed 'The Glorious Revolution', we also have a new local governor for the state of New York. Jacob Leisler has led a revolt in New York to depose the lieutenant governor who remained after Provincial Governor Andros was deposed by a mob in Boston.

There is also war with the French and some of the aboriginal peoples. No battles have yet come near us, but it bears keeping a wary eye looking at the horizon.

Ballan Geleen's council seat is up for election. No one has yet declared an interest in running against him.

Mayor's Report:
The forty years since the founding of Esopus have seen a slow, steady growth and expansion from a small plot of land at a bend in the river to a vast expanse over 80 times its size. From 16 adults to 169, from 8 homes to 70 and from just a few parcels of land, over 100.

Ballan Geleen retained his seat in a close election win over Arth Postmael. The council, in a surprise move, voted to add a fourth seat immediately, and awarded that's eat to Postmael. The council will expand by one seat again this year and in 1692, for a total of 6 seats in addition to the mayor. Each year, two seats will be up for election, with the mayor's term expiring every fifth year.

The last wave of settlers nearly depleted our tool reserves. An extra smithing shop is being built to try to keep pace with demand, but coal and wood production will also need to increase to keep thise shops supplied. We've also expanded farming and have added additional farmers to work on key plots.

Expansion to the south is now an immediate plan. Laborers have been working non-stop to clear parcels of land for new farms, markets, homes and pastures.

We have word that a new governor will arrive this year. It's also been said that our previous charter will be re-instated.

I really like this thread!  This is a great idea for documenting the life of a village.

Nice work!

Thanks! I ended up getting away from the stories as I moved on because I'd rather play than write.

Of course, now the latest version of Colonial Charter is out and isn't backwards compatible, so sadly, the story of Esopus comes to a close here in 1691. I managed to play up to 1699 and got some great screenshots.

I will start over, though.. same map, a few new mods, and another look at a semi-alternate history: Wiltwyck.

Wiltwyck was very near Esopus, and in doing research for Esopus I cam across the actual names of the families of the town in 1661. I'll be using those as the basis of the new game. I'm also going to put some more historical lore in, though I'll have to imagine up how to include the Indian incursions in the town in the 1650s.
