Do they not show up if you never had them? I never thought about it before, but i guess that would make sense. I believe the trade port functions like that, too.

Can we use a village we started before? My "Not really a challenge" village was vegetarian. I never finished the 50 year challenge, and I thought it was kind of pretty.

As long as your already started village meets the challenge criteria and always has, you are welcome to do so.

Sadly, apparently I deleted every single save to that village. It met the criteria, was in year 25 or so.

I'm in!  Have not done a challenge on this forum yet.  I definitely won't win "Best in show" but maybe I can get an honorable mention for rookies!

Here's a question: how do you take a screenshot of just a certain area of the screen (the town hall screen, or the event log, etc)?

If you press "PrtScn" it will copy the display to the clipboard. Then you can open Paint and paste it into a new picture. After that's it's just another image you can edit.

They do not show up in the town hall if you have never had any in your town.  Note that hide coats always show up because you start with some of those, so even if your colony is managed more strictly than the rules for this challenge require, you will still have an entry for hide coats.  It was to the shame of the colonists in Boltona that they were packed off wrapped in the skins of dead animals, and their potatoes and tools were packed with more of the same.

No, it is not forbidden for this challenge, which is why I said "more strictly than the rules for this challenge require".  ;)  Strictly speaking, it should be forbidden because leather can only be obtained by killing animals, but since the absence can never be proved due to the starting conditions, we might as well allow it.

I'm finding this challenge to be enjoyable. I swear, the first 8-10 merchants who visited my town were selling livestock or seeds that I didn't want.

I was reminded how quickly food stores can be depleted; I dropped from about 16,000 to less than 5,000 in the blink of an eye. I may have overreacted to that just a bit...I am now at 71,000 and increasing.

My population is just over 200 people at the moment.  I have two stable market areas set up. Next step will be expanding to a third market area.

That is a good point; I hadn't eve really thought about it.  I was planning on just buying wool for coats as leather is too expensive. :D

I realized when I started my town that I won't have venison/mutton/beef to trade for fruit, so this will be a new way of playing this out. Every time I do a One With Nature combined challenge I am always counting down until I can get meat to trade for food!

A vegan would not buy wool.  Or eggs, which you did not mention.  They won't even eat honey.  It's a wonder they can bring themselves to eat fruit, and starve fruit flies.

I personally eat grass-fed beef and free range turkey.  It's better for my health, but the animals end up dead the same as always.   ;D

I am buying lots of wool and leather - I have more Warm Coats than I will ever need even without hunters or herdsmen - but I figured no eggs even though they weren't mentioned.

We were just talking at work today about being carnivores. I am firmly in the "I am a carnivore as long as the item in question does not resemble the animal it used to be" camp.  Which I grant is probably the most hypocritical...but I seem to be okay with that.

So that means yes to steak, burgers, chicken breasts, bacon, etc.

No to frog legs, whole fish, whole roasted chickens, etc.

So I got down to work on a vegetarian settlement today and this is what I have so far, the town of Steel in year 31. I started on medium because I was worried that on hard the lack of hunting at the beginning would lead to problems and on easy you get animals. I was somewhat unlucky with vegetables--squash and peppers--but lucky with orchards to get chestnuts, so protein was taken care of. Once I had my trading post set up I did save and reload to get a merchant selling corn and then apples, so grain and fruit (berries from gatherers were OK, but not as much inventory as I would like). Health is now 5 and happiness is 4.5. You'll note from the last picture the great place I found for the hospital, on a little peninsula where it wedges in so that there is no access to sides or rear. So far three outbreaks (scarlet fever, mumps and influenza). The first came quite early, before any trade or nomads, so no hospital built and the people standing on their front porch while "visiting the doctor" spread it to about 10 people before I could get the hospital built. The other two were one person each, so I'm thinking I'm pretty clever--probably be disabused of that soon. The other pictures show the stats and overviews of the settlement. I'm calling the boulevard Chestnut Boulevard since that is what is planted down the middle. That is becoming the central thoroughfare and I will pave it soon as stone inventory builds up. I am just now getting the trading going with a second trading post, so the coat situation is not good. That should come along as I produce more ale to trade.

@irrelevant, I've got the same problem. I've got to get more trading posts built since only resource and general goods merchants might bring wool or leather or coats of any kind, and in the early days they bring very little. Turns out the citizens aren't only vegetarians, they're also nudists.  ;D

I've built a tailor, but mostly it's unstaffed since there are no raw materials.

@rkelly17 You use orchards a lot; is it necessary to have a farmer assigned to each one the entire time the trees are growing, or can you reassign the farmer to something else (professional, not as a laborer) for the years between planting and the first harvest?

I'm not really sure. Lately I have been making orchards that only require 1 orchardist (15 wide by 4 high or 9 wide by 4 or 5 high in the 9X9 block farms) and he/she seems pretty busy weeding, etc. even when not harvesting. Personally I don't want to spend the time micromanaging them,  ;D so I set the 1 and wander off to build something else. In most of my farms I build just enough housing to house the requisite farmers plus a barn for them to use. I'm not sure whether or not the orchard farmers become laborers in the Winter like the field farmers.

If I have a East-West boulevard/avenue I'll also plant a series of 15 wide by 4 high nut tree orchards for decoration in the middle (I don't do North-South orchards since I can never remember the right width to get two rows of trees) with a house for farmers at the mid-point of two. In my vegetarian settlement this gives me plenty of protein.

Now that I am trying to learn trade I'm planting blocks of 4 15X4 orchards of the fruit for ale-making with 2 houses and a barn and a near-by tavern--built after the trees start bearing. It appears that the 4 orchards can't quite keep the brewer working full-time all year, so I'm thinking about a fifth orchard using the second adult from the brewer's house. If the space allows it, of course. One of these blocks seems to keep two trading posts stocked with c. 1000 ale each.

I have been unable to decide on the efficacy of using ale as trade good. Seems like I am always trading venison, mutton, and mushrooms for fruit to make ale no matter how many orchards and taverns I have. I will try your set up to see how well it works. In this challenge all I have to trade is mushrooms and firewood.

One year my husband and I almost exclusively ate meat we had killed ourselves, and it changed my attitude towards store-bought cuts of meat.  I found myself wondering how fresh was the meat, and if the animal it came from was healthy.  After I gave up breeding rabbits, and then we moved out of state for my husband's family's deer-hunting camp, that outlook receded, but gradually I became more and more disenchanted with store-bought meat in general.  The chicken is bloated like something several days dead, and everything has been soaked in saltwater.  Yes, they call it broth, but it's saltwater.  Some chirpy people on a cooking forum told me that I should consider it a service that the suppliers were pre-tenderizing the meat so well for my cooking.  Meat that hasn't been soaked in saltwater has cooked perfectly well for me for more than half a century, and anyway, their only reason for doing it is that saltwater is cheaper than flesh.  Right now I am paying supermarket steak prices for grass-fed, specially slaughtered, stew meat, but that is fine with me.  I don't know as much about the turkey as I do about the cattle, but the salt content of the meat is consistent with only 2% added saltwater, instead of 6%, or even 15%.  Apparently federal regulations require that poultry be soaked in cold saltwater as a part of the butchering process.  The federal regulations don't limit the amount of water you can leave in the product when you sell it, however.  Bad, bad regulators.   >:(

@Bobbi, the only merchant who won't take ale is the seed merchant, so for that one you need firewood. The food merchant gives full value for ale, but not firewood (3 instead of 4). Firewood is a necessity and ale is not. All this went into my decision to trade ale. In the early going I do trade firewood and continue until (a) I get all the seeds and (b) ale production is sufficient to supply two trading posts with 1000 units each. Now that I'm learning to trade I add ale production (orchards and tavern) for every two trading posts I build and that seems to keep everybody fully stocked.

@slink, besides the salt water they "immerse" red meat in carbon monoxide to keep it red. Yuch! We get meat and poultry at the local farmers' market from vendors we know. That is an advantage of living in Mennonite country: Farmers' markets and organic methods before they were trendy.

So, I should also update on my vegetarian settlement, Steel. It is now year 52 and here are some shots.

I don't. In this challenge anyway I'm making far more food than my guys can eat. I'm putting beans and corn into the TPs just to free up storage space, and I end up trading it. Might as well trade it for fruit and add value in the brewery.
Title: Re: Forum Multi-Challenge #2: Vegetarian Village

Thanks for the complements, folks. I am not now nor have a ever been a town planner--though my daughter has a degree in planning. Does that count? I do plan things out in Banished and enjoy the aesthetics of it. On this map the locations of the trading posts are dictated by the fact that the river runs on a diagonal for much of its path, thus making TP placement difficult, though I didn't have to worry about fishing docks. The original start point is the barn just South of the tunnel. The rest sort of flowed from those two parameters. I also got lucky that there was that long East-West flat space where Chestnut Boulevard is which allowed the three market squares. Once the settlement was established enough around the original start point I could dig the tunnel and go crazy. Planning and building the forest villages without hunters offered new possibilities as well.

I've also gotten lucky that the traders are bringing what I need to make warm coats and pave the roads (I hope I'm not breaking the rules by buying leather and warm coats from merchants). I did have to accept more than the usual number of nomads on this map as, for some reason, I was running labor shortages for many years even with keeping the number of houses pretty close to the number of "families." But there seems to be a big supply of nomads who are willing to be vegetarians. Who knew?

@rkelly17 : I am uncertain about the use of carbon monoxide to enhance the red color of meat, but I believe that is better than sodium nitrite.  In a sense, anything that makes meat more red is concealing the age of the meat, making it appear as though it has just been cut from a freshly killed animal.  Is this not misrepresentation of the product?  As for store-bought chicken, why would anyone feed something to their family that they are advised not to handle with their bare hands?

@salamander : Yes, you got the too/to/two aspect correct in your sentence.   ;)

I present the town of Innis. A vegetarian village that's still a work in progress (although more of a nudist colony at present).

The town hall was sited between the curving river and the only trade dock for the map situated opposite.

The twin chapels of Innis surrounded by graveyards and the original settlement site can be seen at the top of the map.

The settlement of Steel at year 80. The first picture is the vital statistics. The next group of photos are the newer areas that I haven't posted shots of yet. The first two of that group are my two trading areas, North and South. At this point I am exporting only ale--cider really, since it is made from apples of which I have 20,000 in stock. I am importing logs, textiles, stone and iron. My tailors make all the coats and my blacksmiths make all the tools needed. At the moment the woodcutters are keeping up nicely with the demand for firewood--no active mines or quarries (though I do have one stopped quarry that makes a nice shield for a hospital). The next two shots are newer farming areas. You can spot the newest farms by the stone houses. The final shot is Town Hall Square looking East along Chestnut Boulevard. I think that this will be it for me with the vegetarian challenge. The best part of doing this challenge is that I think I've finally learned how to trade to keep a settlement healthy, happy and prosperous. My citizens are sort  of like the dry county in Tennessee where they distill Jack Daniels; they make a lot of booze, but they export the vast majority.

Ah! You're right about the potatoes. Definitely never had peppers nor cherries though. Food merchants have brought them though, maybe that's all it takes. But then I'd also show eggs, chicken, beef....?

Here are screenshots of Boltona, a colony that was started in May for the "Not Exactly a Challenge" challenge.  I reproduce the posts covering the first 20 years, here.

Once upon a time, ten adults and ten children awoke on a river bank and wondered how they had arrived at this place.  There was a barn and a stockpile, and nothing else for miles and miles except trees, rocks, and outcroppings of iron.  And a river, of course.  Never forget there was a river.

When they awoke, it was Early Spring.  Birds were singing in the trees, and music was playing.  That was normal, of course, for colonies from the mother planet, but what was not normal was the four sacks bearing a note which said: "Eat meat or die, potato suckers."  One sack held chestnuts, the second held beans, and the other two held potatoes.  There was no livestock, nor fishing rods.  There wasn't even a diagram of a fishing rod!  Only tools for farming, and the other miscellaneous occupations of vegetarian living.  Somehow, they had been detected.

Immediately the group sprang into action.  The sack of beans, and one sack of potatoes, was used to plant fields.  A school was soon built, to educate the youngsters not to eat meat.  After the school was built, everyone looked around and noticed that the children were too young for school.  With some sheepishness, they then began to build houses.

After four houses were built, which was not quite enough for everyone, someone suggested they start gathering wood and edible produce.  By Summer they had begun a Forester's Lodge and a Gatherer's Hut in the valley to the north.  The first child in the new colony was born in Summer.  The birth was touch-and-go, but in the end a sound child was born.  Later, the first child who had arrived with them was old enough for schooling, and four of the colonists began cutting logs or collecting edible produce.

In the summer of the fifth year of their banishment, the little tribe of vegetarians was 34 strong.  They had 12 couples, one of which had the only student for the wife, and they once again had ten children.  They grew beans, lots of beans.  They grew some potatoes, too, and the chestnut trees were finally beginning to bear their tasty nuts.  They gathered mushrooms, onions, berries, and wild roots of some kind.  None of these seemed harmful.  Their health was not very good, but recently they had built an Herbalist's Hut.  They hoped the books were correct about the herbs.  They had also built a large cemetery just in case.  Their only source of aggravation was a berm to the north of the settlement.  It was too low for a tunnel and too high for a road, so they had to hike over it to the northern valley.

The chestnut orchard, and one of the bean fields.

The view towards the river, from the western side of town.

After about seven years, the eldest five males met privately.  "We're getting too many children for our school" said one.  The second one replied with a grin "Not much else to do at night", as he hitched up the loincloth that his wife had woven for him from dried beanstalks.  "We'd better build another school, and some more houses" commented the third male.  "Braggart" said the fourth male to the fifth, who was wearing a well bucket tied over his groin instead of woven beanstalks.  The five males shuffled off in their birch bark sandals.

The five eldest females conferred, and one remembered a diagram she had seen before they were banished.  It involved marketplaces.  The five of them laid out the diagram several times before they got it right, but eventually they had a plan.  By year ten, the second school, a second woodcutter's yard, and some more houses and barns, as well as two marketplaces, were built.  They were getting old, but at last they had somewhere to shop.

Final screenshot shows only the households of those with females too old to bear young.  This is the first generation, and part or all of the second generation.  The first five houses of the second generation are the original ten children.  The other twelve houses contain still-breeding pairs.  No one has, as yet, died.

In the 11th year, the first old female died.  On her deathbed, she kept muttering "Never forget the river ... never forget the river ..."  This sorely puzzled everyone, but after she was dead and buried, they set a watcher on the riverside.  Day after day, the watcher watched fish and deer swimming under the water of the river.  But sure enough, one day a rowboat passed by.  It was burdened with many parcels.  As the colonist watched in amazement, the rower waved a hand and cried "Build it and we will come."  Build what, wondered the watcher.  But the sentence was duly reported to the elders, who gathered in meeting to decide just what should be built.  First they built a bridge, but that only got them to the other side of the river.  Then they built a Trading Post.

"What shall we trade?" was the first question.  Tallying all of their possessions required a larger enclosed area than they owned.  "We could build a special barn just for that purpose, and why not have someplace people can hang around the outside, right?"  They built it out of stone, and called it the Town Hall.  After much swearing and scratching marks on birch bark with sharp sticks, they decided to trade beans.  Oh, and those huge mushrooms that the gatherers kept finding.  "Got to be somebody wants those" was the general sentiment.  One thing they noticed was that they were short on firewood, so they built another forester's hut and another woodcutter's yard.

"And what shall we trade for?" was the second question.  Corn, it seemed, was on everyone's mind.  "Baked potatoes are fine, but we'd love some grain."  Everyone also wanted some wool, from which to make clothing to replace the woven beanstalks.  "These things itch", complained someone.  "We want some nice soft woolen underwear."

The following year, a rowboat laden with parcels pulled into their Trading Post, and they felt very good about it all the effort to which they had gone.  They didn't buy anything just then, but they ordered seed corn and wool.  While they waited, they replace the original school with a tailors shop, and built a new school on the far side of the second marketplace.

Two years later, the seed corn and the wool arrived.  They changed the order then to wool, and stone, and iron.  The year afterward those things began to arrive.  Life was good, even though the elders were now dying off one at a time.  At least they were not buried on a beanstalk mat, as the first old female was.  No, they were buried in cloaks of fine woolen fabric, with grave offerings of green beans cooked with onions and roots, and corn cakes made with chopped chestnuts.

Life proceeded as usual in Boltona for the first 20 years.  People were born, had children, and died.  Everyone went to school, but some fathered children while they were still students.  No one ever gave birth while they were in school.  The population outgrew the pinwheel marketplace plan of the five original old women, and a new marketplace was built with another school, chapel, cemetery, tailor, blacksmith, and woodcutter.  A hospital was also built, although disease had never been seen yet in Boltona.

Here I attach a copy of the genealogy for the first 17 years.  I even entered it on Family Tree Maker.  Then I realized that I have a real-life family tree covering my family and the families of my various in-laws, which contains 10,000 names.  I stopped keeping records for Boltona and shelved it until this contest arrived.
Title: Re: Forum Multi-Challenge #2: Vegetarian Village
Post by: slink on July 15, 2014, 07:49:23 PM
I continued to play Boltona until Year 51, when the population became stagnant and was probably headed downward.  There is little left to do except continue the growth across the river, and I have real-life projects to work on, so I am ending it here.  As you can see, the west side of the map is nearly completed.  The three pinwheels of farms have wells in the housing areas.  Protein is provided by chestnut groves.  Groves of peach trees were planted in the year 41, to supplement the berries gathered in the forest.  There are only two trading docks.  Mostly beans are traded, with some mushrooms and some firewood.  Firewood is not in abundant supply because many of the houses are wooden.  When Boltona had plenty of stone, they built stone houses.  Otherwise they built wooden houses.  Only wool is used for clothing, although leather is allowed in the contest.  I did not start the colony with the assumption that leather would be allowed in a vegetarian colony, so I continued it in the same fashion.

Here are my votes for the Vegetarian Challenge.  I really enjoyed seeing all of the towns that entered, but these are the ones I think best fit the categories of the challenge.

Best Looking: @rkelly17
What can I say?  @rkelly17 has a real knack for creating beautiful towns.  I like the layout of the population centers and the natural look of leaving a good number of forest untouched.

Most People: @irrelevant
2000 total population ... wow!  :o  I still haven't broken the 1K mark, yet.

Most Map Area Used: @RedKetchup
I thought @RedKetchup's town squeaked by a little bit over the next best -- I'm estimating 80-85% of the map used (which I know is subjective).

Best in Show: @irrelevant
Rickettsville was a close second to Lucky Seven as far as map area covered, and had the highest population.  Personally, I like the absence of mines/quarries, which is what made the difference.  This category was a hard one to decide on.

I'm having a hard time with the Best Rookie Entry, mostly because I'm not sure who qualifies.  As I read the rules @solarscreen set for the challenge, I think the entries that could be eligible for this category are @rkelly17 and @salamander.  If I'm right about this, my vote would be:

Best Rookie Entry: @rkelly17

If I've overlooked someone for the last category, or have wrong what's a 'rookie', please let me know.

Best look : @slink
Best in Show: @Bobbi

Best rookie: @salamander

Most people: @RedKetchup
Most area: @RedKetchup
Best looking: so hard! @Bobbi, @slink, and @rkelly17 have all created towns that I admire the look of; I only wish I were so creative. Finally have to go with @slink, I love the look of those farming hamlets.
Best in show: has to be @Bobbi, that town is more like a city, and is a manufacturing and trading monster with potential to reach pop 3000 (did anyone notice the pop curve? Not a curve at all, just a perfectly straight line heading up, like a plane taking off). Love the monumental scale of those central avenues. Shame about what high pop does to machine performance.
Best rookie: @rkelly17, everything is so tidy and orderly, even the industrial areas.
Best falafels: @salamander

Hi all, I've got to decide who wins each category. Going to review them all again now. Sorry to hear about your back issues, @ivorymalinov. I can certainly sympathize, although mine are not so bad. Pulled a muscle in my back last week, still recovering from that. @irrelevant, I don't think I posted a shot of my population graph. Now that I look at it, it is kind of impressive. I will post it now, with some shots of my city in summer. Just realized the shots were winter.
The last shot is of the area I was working on when time ran out. My computer gets really laggy at that population level.

@Bobbi I downloaded your town (and all of the ones that had saves posted) and ran it for a full year, so I could see what it looked like through the seasons. That was part of what I based my decisions on. But that was also when I looked at your pop graph.

BTW, what exactly qualifies as a "rookie"? Just someone who hasn't previously entered a contest? Because I could be wrong, but I thought @rkelly17 was not a "newbie"?

@Bobbi I actually have no idea. Somewhere upthread it says he is one, that's all I know.

@Bobbi I downloaded your town (and all of the ones that had saves posted) and ran it for a full year, so I could see what it looked like through the seasons. That was part of what I based my decisions on. But that was also when I looked at your pop graph.

^^ Did my citizens survived ? ^^
@RedKetchup Yes, they did! I think they ran out of fruit though  ;)

Thanks for the complements, gang. I do not consider myself a rookie--actually have no idea what the definition of a "rookie" is for these challenges, but I'm pretty sure I'm not one. I did the market circle, Valley of Death and 500 farmers challenges and I've been hanging around World of Banished since the beginning. Every time I learn something new. As much as I covet the "champion" designation on my posts, I really shouldn't get the rookie prize.

As for deciding who gets which prizes, I'm looking over everyone's work and so far I am so impressed with each settlement that I'm having trouble voting. I'll keep working at it.

Most People: @irrelevant  (why are we voting on an objective, easily proven, number? is this a sobriety test?)
Most map area used: @irrelevant, because what the heck I'm not going to print it out and weigh the bits of paper occupied and otherwise
Best Looking: @rkelly17, since I have no option but to vote against myself, and his map looks a bit like mine in some places even though there are FAR too many trading posts for my taste  ;)
Best In Show: @rkelly17, to make things balanced, and anyway he likes cats as I recall

Best Rookie: As far as I know, the only person in this contest who was truly a rookie was @canis39, and the entry was disqualified for having eggs on the inventory list.  You can give @canis39 the award anyway for all of me, though.   ;D

It took 2 lattes and a few breaks but I have finally completed going through each of the entries. It was difficult to choose between the towns, everyone did such a great job and all the towns were scenic and special in their own ways! Good Luck to everyone! :)

@Bobbi  Nice main street! I love what you did with it. So few barns! I like how you vary the directions of your farms close to orchards and away from them.

@irrelevant  I don't think I've seen marketplaces in the forestry hubs before; an interesting idea and picturesque! Your farmland is so neat and orderly-looking and I like how you found a way to include so many gatherer's huts. Looks like you used up almost all of your entire map and had a nice steady population climb!

@ivorymalinov  A pretty town! There is an order to it, yet it still manages to feel organic, as well. Another one with few barns, I don't know how you guys manage with so few.

@rkelly17  Another town that manages to feel very natural and evolved. I like your balance between planned spaces and more natural, wooded areas within the town.

@RedKetchup  I love your planning; especially the symmetry and balance of it all. Overall, your town flows nicely and is pleasant to look and seems to function well.

@slink  I really like the pinwheel-style of your bigger farming areas and how you maintain a lot of green spaces around. You worked around the mountainous areas nicely. I love the story you wrote for your town!

@salamander  Thanks for the list and links, it made it easier to find everyone's towns! I liked the way your town had an orderliness to it that followed the landscape nicely. In other words, your town has a nice flow to it.

The most difficult choice was Best in Show; I had a difficult time choosing between @slink and @RedKetchup! They both have lovely towns, and both showed the development of their towns well. In the end, I went with RedKetchup because his map/town was more complete. I wish there could have been two choices!

Best Looking: @rkelly17
Most map area used: @irrelevant
Best In Show: @RedKetchup
Best Rookie Entry: @salamander? Is he considered a rookie?

can I ask the difference between : best looking and best in show ?

Best in show is an entry that may or may not be the winner of an individual category but overall is so good in all categories that it can be considered the best of all the entries.

Think a pentathlon, heptathlon, or decathlon in sports.

instead to notice and acknowledged that the reply no 70 was in fact, different from no 1 ^^

and thanks you to have explained to me about the 'best in show'. :)  decathlon is very helpful .... and very descriptive :)

Best Looking: A tie between @slink and @rkelly17
Best In Show: @Bobbi  - Can't wait to see your trading empire!

Rookie Champion: @salamander

Be sure to applaud the champs on their excellent work and have another look at what can be accomplished in a vegetarian village!  Amazing!

Thank you all for the votes. It is a great honor to be tied with a Banished artist like @slink. I would have voted but I had some trouble downloading the save files and then I forgot my password  and then . . . well, you know how it goes. Creeping senility strikes again. What I really like about @Bobbi's work are her beautiful plazas. I'm getting a bit dissatisfied with mine and hers are a real inspiration.

@assobanana76 As a participant in our vegetarian challenge here, I've followed that discussion with interest. I was even going to comment in the thread, to chime in against your numerous nay-sayers, but when I realized I'd need to create a Steam account, I decided against.

I had a Steam account a few years ago, but lost interest in it. Later, when I was trying to free up resources on an old and wheezing PC, I was very disturbed to find that I was unable to uninstall the Steam software. This experience has made me extremely reluctant to let Steam gain a foothold on my new machine.

Anyway, I notice that your use of houses and barns in your farm area is very similar to my own. I must say, I admire your good sense  ;)

Wow! that crop mass !!
my concept to the nth degree !! :)
in my small (small map!) I'm looking for more varied diet that I can create crops and orchards for each suit included fig and lettuce.
in the hope that others create at least 16 other semi !!

I hope that the 36 year life of my village vegan speak in my defense against those who give me him for bias.
can not deny having had various problems (the last with tools), but I think more due to the fact that he was (is?), a rookie who did not know the mechanics of the game.

point to self-sufficiency for at least ten years without a click of my mouse, and then I'll throw in a great map! see how it goes ..

I would personally never bother with such a useless mod. If I am reading it correctly, he essentially just renamed a bunch of crops. If they do not look like bananas or whatever, I am not sure what the point is. Need diversification in the appearance of the world, not new names for same thing.

Title: Re: Forum Multi-Challenge #2: Vegetarian Village
Post by: slink on September 16, 2014, 06:48:33 PM
I think the author of the crop mod was well-intentioned.  The main problem is the inclusion of all 20 new crops in one mod.  Maybe all of the crops that were mentioned by one person or another were included, and not everyone wants all of those new crops.  Probably the modder did not realize that there was a problem with the General Goods Merchant's boat, as I did not until it was mentioned in this forum.  While it is true that lacking new models and graphics makes new crops not as attractive, if a player really wants to grow strawberries and can't mod at all, a mod that doesn't change appearances is better than no mod.

I may be beating a dead horse, but I would really like to see a pack of 4 or so CLIMATE-APPROPRIATE field crops. Bananas (to choose one example) do not grow where it snows (except maybe in @RedKetchup's planned greenhouse) and I don't want them until there is a "tropics" mod. Even figs, as in the examples, is a stretch. There are Portuguese and Italian immigrants in our area (where the climate is much like Banished) who grow figs, but it is a lot of work and involves burying the tree or bringing it into the house during Winter to keep it from freezing. I actually grew figs when I lived in So. Cal. and even there you had to be careful about frost.

So: A nice, not overly large, pack of climate appropriate field crops and a separate pack of tree crops would be great--with appropriate graphics.

This is just my opinion, of course. Modders will do what modders will do.

I filled all the existing forums of Banished with my thread "winter crops" !!
crops: carrots, fennel, spinach, broccoli, artichokes, cauliflower, leek, cabbage some winter ..
orchards: oranges, tangerines, grapes, pears, persimmons ..

In the Banished climate where it drops below freezing (0 C/32 F) and snows in the Winter, what someone in a warmer climate might thing of as "Winter crops" don't really exist. You can over-Winter garlic and many biennial root crops like carrots in the ground--if you've planted them in Summer--but the others grow in Spring or Fall. "Winter crops" mean crops that you can store like pumpkins and rutabagas (called "turnips" here in Ontario). For the first time this year we got artichokes to grow in our backyard. Total harvest so far: 2. Citrus is definitely out. Even in sunny California you have to take measures to ensure they don't freeze. In my youth they were still using "smudge pots," which burned fuel oil, in the orchards. Now it's propellers to move the air. Being a gardener who moved to Ontario from California I had to radically change my view of what grew when. In California my Winter garden was full of lettuce, carrots and the cabbage family. Here the Winter garden is often .5 - 1 meter deep in snow. On the other hand I can grow fruit and berries here that didn't get enough chill time in CA. I'd love to see raspberries in Banished.

Hi, semi newbie here. I say semi, because I've been lurking and reading for a while, finally decided to register. :)

While the scored aspect of this challenge is over, as a player I have questions regarding this challenge and am hoping someone can provide input.

I've got a village I've been working with using the limited (to me*) guidelines of this challenge, currently at 153 adults, 46 students, and 53 children I don't recall what year it's in though.

I've read through but didn't see any mentions of mods. Are they allowed or not? The ones I'm thinking of, which I haven't downloaded/installed yet are; bee keeping, flax crops, and one or two other crop type mods that look compatible to the challenge and providing additional food/clothing resources for the village.

*as a long time simmer I'm used to challenges with 2 or more pages of rules ;)

Thanks for joining!

All of these challenges were created long before mods came out.  Once the mods came out, all the challenges pretty much died off.  I think they are interesting reads for people to see what could be possible in the game and give ideas to make playing interesting again.

I tried rerunning the challenges after the mods came out and there was just not much interest.  Feel free to play with or without mods and let us know what you wind up doing!

Most of the challenges were great fun and generated some very creative and skillful entries. At least for me, some of them really were challenges.

Two thoughts:

(1) I wasn't so interested in re-doing challenges I'd already done--and the "Most Beautiful" challenge which was underway when the mods started coming was thoroughly won by @wasabi333 (http://worldofbanished.com/index.php?topic=649.0), who may not even have seen his settlement as an entry.

(2) Once mods are out there, I think (and this is my opinion only) that any challenge would need to have a list of permissible or, in some cases, required mods to make an even playing field. I can foresee a long discussion leading to such a decision.

Have to agree on most beautiful village going to @wasabi333. Having seen what he/she did, I knew whatever I had did not compare. So I didn't bother with my entry, and nobody else did either. I do wish that the excitement this forum to generate would come back. Maybe if we had some active modders it could come back.....
