Title: Abandoned - Red Rock Quarry & Beach Resort - Story 32
Post by: Abandoned on September 03, 2018, 07:26:48 AM
Monday Sept. 3, 2018

Today is Labor Day in the USA, a national holiday to honor laborers.  In Banished World there are few workers who labor harder than miners, quarrymen, river boatmen, and our modders.  :) This is the 32nd story in the Smallville series and tells the tale of how the town of Red Rock became a place for rest and relaxation for boatmen and laborers.  It is year 53 Smallville Time and the location is the southwest Red Sand Desert, upriver from Riverboat Junction which is to the south and east.

The map seed is #755190837    CC Red Desert, Small, Mild, Disasters Off, Easy Start

@RedKetchup I choose terrain because of storyline and location on world map and the easy start condition that I am used to.  And yes  :) I do have the new animals and the grass and flowers, deadwood, new berries and nest with eggs.  :)  Everything looks great even on red terrain, Red  ;D  Taking baby-steps, plenty of places left on the map to later try RK terrains and start conditions.  Getting my feet wet at beach resort to get used to all the new things.  ;D  I hope it all goes well  :)

That is nice story topic, for the laborers.  But, so far, that red desert doesn't look like much of place one would go to for rest and relaxation.  I am sure you will make it be a good place out of that barren, hot, dry place.  :)

@galensgranny I don't have to do much of anything to hot dry barren desert, Red's beautiful fodder and flowers will do it for me.  :)

Oh oh, @ Goblin Girl, Do I want to know what Burning Manis?  :D

Well, Wikipedia has all sorts of hifalutin things to say about it.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burning_Man
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burning_Man)But really, it's a bunch of pot smoking hippies who gather in the desert for a few days each year and...do what pot smoking hippies do.  It's worth doing a google image search to get a better idea.

;D @Goblin Girl oh, no, no pot smoking hippies in Red Rock  :D  I believe there is a marijuana mod on banishedinfo site but I don't have it.  If they want to smoke they will have to shred a piece of deadwood.  ;D

@brads3 CCTerrains is mod with the red desert, it is 4th mod enabled, 10 or 11 mods above RKEC.  The story Intro mod list is the order my mods are in.  I have my mods divided into 4 categories, the mods in each of those 4 groups are in alphebetical order.. The groups are in that order in my mod list.  Listed are the mods that are enabled for this map

Chapter 1

As you know, weary traveler, times have not been all that good in Banished World.  A mountain came down on the ancestors of Smallville's founders.  There has been extreme heat and cold, and severe flooding and drought.  There has been massive food shortages, and mass migrations.  The main river changed its course, and there has been trouble with pirates.  And yet we managed to survive and even enjoy ourselves from time to time.

My name is Yvetter and my husband is Wavery.  We were very young and newlywed when we came here to the red desert from Riverboat Junction.  Mr. Red, the man in charge of canal building and inspections, said the riverboat resource merchants were not transporting enough stone to areas that needed it.  His associate Mr. Eb, who was quarry master at the time, suggested the red desert area as a good source of needed stone.  The recent drought uncovered a lot of surface stone and ores in that area that could fill the need until a proper quarry was put into operation.

Riverboat Junction was a very old town, in fact, the oldest town in Smallville's world.  It was a bit rundown and overcrowded with workers, and there was trouble with pirates to the east and northeast.  Wavery and I wanted a safe place to raise a family, we wanted a fresh start.  We were 1 of 6 families to come here to start a quarry town.  We named it Red Rock.

It was difficult traveling, we had 7 young children and a herd of dairy cows with us.  Once we settled into our homes we cleared a field to plant peas, built a pasture for the cows, and started building a school.  One of the girls became an adult before it was completed.  The area was recovering from the severe drought, there were now trees, thatch, wild flowers, and wild foods, many we had never seen before.  There were herds of deer and other wild animals and birds.  In late autumn we even found nests of eggs as well as plenty of deadwood for our cookfires.  By the end of that first year our storage barn was filled and 5 new babies had been born.  Our son Skylan was one of them.  We had high hopes that our town and our families would thrive here.

:) Probably because of those two mods or one of them? Hunting & Gathering, Hunting Season.

I not know the mods but probably hunters kill more deer or so?

Now see where the story going to take us :)

Mr Red and Mr Eb  ;D yes, Tom Sawyers Hunting & Gathering tool places a bow and arrow symbol on the ground near herd and laborer goes there and hunts. Very handy at start of game before hunting lodge is built and especially good for Adam & Eve start.  Hunting Season increases the size of herds and longevity, also increases the harvest amount or frequency I believe.

Chapter 2

We were impressed by the wonderful berries and other wild foods our gatherer collected, some we never had before.  Our foresters were also busy collecting fodder and flowers and several kinds of ore as well as logs.  We would add more foresters as soon as we were able to.  The deadwood that was collected took care of our firewood needs but we were often short of logs and we needed lumber to build a tailor.  We would need hide coats soon, and thanks to our hunter we had a supply of leather in the storage barn.

By spring of year 3 we laid the foundation for a blacksmith.  It would take more iron ore to make tools but at least we would not have to process it into iron first.  We also planned to build a woodcutter, even though the lumber mill could be used to cut firewood if need be.  We wanted our town to prosper and grow, we would need to learn to make other building materials besides lumber.  We needed more logs and more workers.

We were very happy to welcome 13 nomads that spring.  They came from the southwest where it was still very hot and dry.  It was warm here in Red Rock but we did often have a refreshing light rain and we had plenty of shade trees, we hated to cut them down.  The families agreed to stay here with us and we agreed to build more houses.  We also built a safe place by the school for the children to play, and a cemetery.

By early autumn Red Rock had a population of 41, 23 adults, 16 young children, and 2 students in our school.  Five new houses were being built.

Chapter 3

Besides the need for the new houses, we also needed more storage facilities. All these building projects needed a lot more logs.  We did not want to cut too many of our shade trees close to town so cutting trees and transporting logs took longer than we had hoped. We found an area just west of town in a small valley that would make an ideal spot for a second forester.  Problem was there were bears that were often seen there in the small clearing.

There were also buffalo and elk in the area.  These animals must have come down from the mountains in the north and from the prairie in the west to escape the cold and the floods.  Perhaps the Animal Refuge had rescued and later released these animals back into the wild.  We did not want to overhunt any of these animals and we did not want to collect all the goose eggs either but they were so good for breakfast with a bowlful of wild berries.

Our variety and quantity of food was good but we had no grain.  Our health was suffering.  By early spring of year 5 we built an herbalist and hoped our overall health would improve.  We considered building a trading post but we were still constructing more storage units and as always we were short of logs.  We also needed more houses for the 4 nomads who arrived and were willing to stay.  Two of them would work in the new forester station that was just completed.  By late autumn a trading post for seed & stock was constructed.  By then we had several different sized barns.  It was difficult to know what we had a surplus of to trade.  We needed a town hall in which to keep inventory records.

Chapter 4

A building for town records would need a lot of light, and those records would need protection from the elements.  A town hall would need glass windows.  Glass was made from sand, well we sure had a lot of that around here.  Hopefully we had someone who knew how to make it into glass.  It just so happened that one of the 5 nomads who arrived in Spring of year 6 knew how to make glass and knew how much sand would be needed.  We dug a sand pit according to his specifications.

By the time Warnet, the seed merchant arrived, the sand quarry was completed and a stone quarry was begun.  Warnet only had banana seeds which we did not want but we did learn the trade value of the items we already had at the trading post.  Our leather was worth 12 and the silver ore we found was worth 11 trade units.

By spring of year 7 the quarry was complete and so was a glass maker workshop.  We had no coal and were concerned we would have to use more of our firewood.  Our supply was usually low because we were always short of logs.  We would need to be sure to collect plenty of deadwood so we would not be short of firewood too.

In Spring of year 8, 6 more nomads arrived and we again welcomed more workers and built more houses.  We need the workers for our newly constructed clay pit and kiln.  Our wet red sand on this side of the small creek would make good roof tiles and red bricks, only problem was we needed more firewood.  We did have enough lumber and glass to begin construction of the town hall.  Our glass maker was now making glassware. Our blacksmith was making iron out of iron ore.  He could return to making tools when the building materials were delivered to the town hall site.

It was good to have a place for our town records and for town meetings although up until now the others have been leaving decision making up to Wavery and myself.  Maybe because we had more time, we only had 2 children.  Red Rock's population was now 71, 39 adults, 14 students, and 18 young children.  Our education rate was 33%.  We needed more housing for new families and our health was still down.

Chapter 5

In spring of year 9, 7 nomads arrived.  We needed more workers.  We built a 3rd forester, we were always short of logs.  We also built a 2nd gatherer hut and hunting cabin, and more houses.  By autumn our food supply was quite a bit lower than it had been.  We just could not seem to get ahead.

The seed merchant arrived but only had lemon seeds, we ordered wheat seeds and cleared a 10x12 field.  We hoped the wheat seeds would arrive by spring.  Riverboats have been few and far between and mostly they have been livestock merchants who came from Animal Refuge.  There were not many suppliers upriver from here.  The Refuge usually took what merchandise the riverboat men had in exchange for livestock.  That made this a good location for a supply of stone to Riverboat Junction, the riverboats had plenty of room by the time they got here.  That fact didn't help us much but hopefully we would have enough stone to trade for special orders.

By winter we were low on firewood, the lumber mill was helping out but we were still short of logs.  The labors began cutting more trees as well as gathering more wild foods.  Lenn, the laborer, died of a weak heart.  It had not been a good year.

The river boatman returned in spring of year 10 with the wheat seeds we ordered.  It was too late to plant the seeds, peas were already planted in that cleared field.  The boatman said if we build another trading post it may lure other river boatman here.  Also if we made perfume out of all our flowers we would get a much better trade value for them, 6 units instead of only 1 for the flowers.  So we began construction another trading post and a perfumery nearby.  Much to our dismay we realized we needed a foundry to turn our copper ore into usable copper.  This would take awhile.

In the meantime we built another school.  Being busy with building projects and wood and material shortages we miss the fact that our school was filled to capacity.  Some children missed getting an education.  The wheat was planted in Spring of year 11 and the foundry, trading post, and perfumery were completed.  We had glassware but needed water to make the perfume.  We built a watertower nearby and a fishing pier.

Our hard working laborers were so busy hauling heavy building materials and ores that we neglected to gather wild foods.  Our food supply was quite low, as was our supply of tools.  The foundry began making iron and a 2nd blacksmith was built nearby.  Of course we were still short of logs.  Laborers were sent to help the foresters cut more trees.  Hopefully we were in time to avoid a tool crisis.  We were all exhausted by this time.

Chapter 6

Year 12 brought a welcome change to Red Rock, 12 migrants arrived from Riverview, a resort town some distance upriver.  They loved Riverview, it was quite a well developed town with shops and markets, a spa and gazebo too.  Only problem was that it was cold and snowy in Riverview.  There were rooftop rest areas to sit in the sun on lounge chairs and enjoy the view of the river.  Although Mr. Red, the canal inspector who was a frequent visitor, liked his lounge chair in the shade.  Another problem was the water temperature was very cold for swimming.  So this group decided to relocate somewhere warmer.  They asked for permission to stay and build a sand beach for swimming.

Well, weary traveler, let me tell you.  We were all impressed by the beach area they built and we were all invited to use the facility as often as we liked.  The sand was wonderful on tired barefeet and there was a market, tables and chairs, and colorful umbrellas for a little shade.  The small swimming area was roped off so no young children could be swept away by the river's current.  Our hardworking workers just loved it, an hour or two by the beach was a bright spot in their day.  Soon young couples began building colorful beach house nearby.  We had feared many of our young people might consider migrating to a place where they wouldn't have to work quite so hard.   I think our fears were put to rest.

The best was yet to come, in the summer of year 13, the beach-lovers built a fantastic ice cream cart.  We had a surplus of milk and they made a cool refreshing treat in the shade of a nearby tree.  A play area for the children was being constructed and more beach houses appeared.  Red Rock quarry was now a beach resort.

Chapter 7

It was back-to-work in year 14.  Our log supply had improved but we were low on firewood and tools.  Our food supply also improved and we now had 2 pigs in a pasture.  Well sometimes we had 2 pigs in the pasture, one of them liked to burrow under the fence.

It took all year to get the small wooden chapel by the cemetery built.  We wondered if the builders were spending too much time at the beach.  They did manage to finish the boarding house and Old Barn Pub by late spring of year 15.  We were a bit disappointed that we did not have all the ingredients to make at least one of the pub meals.  We had onions and we could build Old Smokery to make smoked meat.  We had plenty of venison but not that much firewood.  Both the Old Smokery and the Old Barn Pub would use firewood.  We could start smoking the venison but we still would need wine before we could make a pub meal.

In spring of year 16 we planted strawberries instead of peas.  The tavern, when completed, would make strawberry wine.  The tavern was finished by winter and began making wine, the Old Barn Pub began making pub meals of roast meat, onions, and wine.   A second herbalist was also built that year and in year 17 we made plans to build a greenhouse.  We had a small supply of fertilizer thanks to our pasture of pigs.  Sadly Lorett, the herdsman, died during childbirth.  We just need more glass than we had for the greenhouse.  We were always in need of something.

Can just be loaded in your running game.

Names are Smallville Quarry, Riverview Quarry and Red Rock Quarry.

Chapter 8

A country little house had been built over by the chapel and cemetery where Lorett was laid to rest.  On the other side of town another wood cutter was built.  We were out of iron which we needed for tools and there was little iron ore to be had.  We did not come to Red Rock to harvest trees and mine for iron.  We came to supply stone to the river boatman.  Finally a resource merchant showed up but he did not have iron, iron ore, or tools which we badly needed.

The greenhouse was completed and we decided to grow oats.  Although we had a wide variety of foods and wheat, our health had never been lower.  We built a bath house hoping it would help but by early summer of year 19 our food supply was dropping, we still had no iron and our tool supply was falling, and as always our firewood supply was very low.  Our laborers were exhausted from collected deadwood, wild foods, and what little iron ore they could find.  How long could this go on?

It has been 20 years since 19 of us came here to the Red Desert.  We now had a population of 156, 77 adults, 33 students, and 46 young children.  Our education rate was 47%.  Even though we had a wide variety of foods and grain our overall health was very low.  We were again short of food, herbs, firewood, and tools.  The surface iron ore was gone.  We ordered firewood, iron, iron ore, and tools from Elvertine, the resource merchant, and hoped he would return soon.  We began clearing another field for more wheat and again took to the woods to gather wild foods and deadwood.

But despite all that, weary traveler, we accomplished what we set out to do, we dug a rock quarry which now proudly wears a Red Rock Quarry sign.  It will supply Riverboat Junction and the resource merchants with rock for a long time to come.  And as an added bonus, we have a wonderful beach resort for our hard-working laborers to relax and enjoy themselves.  Go get yourself an ice cream, weary traveler, and enjoy the rest of your day.

The End

are you finding less food outputs from sending bannies to gather wild foods or from a gathering hut?
Title: Re: Abandoned - Red Rock Quarry & Beach Resort - Story 32
Post by: Abandoned on September 11, 2018, 07:36:43 PM
@brads3 the gatherer's hut collected a nice amount of wild foods, I had 2 built but I did not have enough workers to keep them or other food production buildings fully staffed.  When crop fields were harvested I had a few extra workers to help collect wild foods and deadwood.  I had a lot of workers trying to keep up with demand for logs and firewood.  I did not have enough workers and less then 50% educated.  I do not know if health effects production but their overall health was lower than I have ever had before.

thank you that is useful info.i saw you were having troubles.in tests today,my gatherer is low.they aren't collecting bird nests and seem to be leaving other foods too. the RK's before this version had better outputs. i'll run more tests to solve it. weird too i saw the vanilla fisherman get 800 fish in 1 year with 1 worker.

you are right when education gets near 35% or below, food is a struggle to keep up.firewood as well.

Post by: Abandoned on September 11, 2018, 08:39:37 PM
This mod there are a lot of production chains and everything needs firewood, always short of log too, then tools.  I collected a lot of deadwood to compensate.

My gatherers did seem to collect everything. There seemed to be more bird nests in late summer and fall, that is when I would sent out laborers to collect wild foods.  :)

My education rate was rising, but from early on I was struggling with logs and firewood and tools so I stopped taking nomads even though I needed workers.  I could not afford to have that rate drop.

@brads3 I went back to map to check out blacksmith and discovered there are other tools I could make without iron or iron ore - wooden, stone, and copper, many options.

So while there I checked gatherers again.  Both are in forested area and now they are not collecting all items.  I believe eggs, and cranberry, and some others spawn from grass and flowers rather than from the trees.  Perhaps it would be best to place gatherers in both areas or at the edge of forest radius rather than in the center to insure all things will be gathered.  :)

all other wild food are spawn by flowers. in your forest or you got rid all the flowers that spawn the wild food, or got rid all the grass that spawn the flowers that spawn the wild food. in the gatherer windows, you see everything that trees are spawning, not more , not less.

yea,the blacksmith tool mod must be in the RK.that is handy.i am used to CC with iron processing.start with stone tools and improve to better tools as i gain mines.plus i leave the original BS making stone tools as a safety.then even if you are low on some material, you shouldn't run into a tool shortage.

your food #'s are much better than mine.i have way too much fish.the vanilla fisherman is 500+ been as high as 800.but i have very low wild foods.i scrolled the food gather tool and can see there are items the gatherers aren't collecting.it is odd that the foods do highlight and show as foods thou.the prior RK version i had wasn't like this.different gatherers would collect some variety but not this low.more testing i guess.

You maybe use a lot of other mods what spawn stuff I guess brads.

The more stuff is spawn the less overall is spawned I think.
And if a lot of trees/grass/flowers what are the mothers of the spawned resources are taken away because of harvesting and/or more fill up space with buildings it will get less too.

yes and no.the more different items the less of each.but then i should have more items just low #'s for each.as it is i have low totals with maybe 3 items in the gatherer list.what is strange is i  upgraded the pine and RK both, but didn't have issues in past games.items that a gatherer didn't collect wouldn't collect from the food gather tool either before.if the items were conflicted from 1 mod to another ,you would expect the foods not to be collected from the gather wild food tool.

mod order is so critical lately.a 3rd mod can impact 2 others sometimes as well.i fixed several issues from the maps before.went to play and poof different weirdness.

took the pine and wagon ho mods out, retest. gathers are better but still lower than past games and fishing is more normal.

The forester gathered flowers and thatch to plant trees, now area is all trees and tree spawned foods.  Flowers, thatch, and flower spawned wild foods are no longer in those areas.  They are still on other areas of the map and can be collected with gathering tool or by another gatherer if built there.  :)

which mean maybe gatherers arent at their max now if placed in middle of a forester zone :)
