Title: At last
Post by: A Nonny Moose on May 19, 2016, 11:00:56 AM
A couple of things happened today that make this game now run normally.  First I got a new, faster machine with a four-core I5 CPU with 8 GB memory and an SSD and an AMD/ATI free standing GPU with 2 GB on board memory.  Then I got an update to wine.  Wine (beta) is now at wine-1.9.10.

Near as I can tell, it is running exactly as if I was running on Windows.  My saved game which was running at 10x is now running at 1x and seems to be slightly faster than before.

All things come to him who waits, eh?

Of course with the SSD the game loads in nothing flat as do saved games.  Backups to rotating storage, of course.

Thanks.  Downloaded the patch.  Runs just fine.

Congrats on the new machine, Nonny. Luke is still working on the native linux version, but his blogs seem to indicate it is getting closer. You can be the test case!

Willingly.  The new version of wine runs the game flat out, or maybe its the new machine.  There are 2GB on board my graphics card, and the system is an i5-3470 with four cores and 8 GB memory.  The main storage is a 128 GB SSD.

The set up is such that a native version would not impact the Windows version under wine because they can't see each other.  The installation for Windows is in the wine prefix (a directory) and the main system doesn't really see it.

If you are speaking to Luke, you might want to pass this along, as I am most willing to be a test bed.

Cute program.  Uses all four cores.  Here is a System Monitor taken while Banished was running.  Sysmon was the only other app. running.

One more thing.  If Banished is running full screen under wine and you switch desktops, it hangs and you can't get control of it.  Doesn't happen running in windowed mode.  A Ubuntu peculiarity or maybe wine gets lost.

How well does the new patch run with the Medieval Town mods?

No idea, I don't have them.  I am happy with what I have and don't usually go for many mods in any game.

One thing I have noticed is that fancy shadows/reflections eat so many resources that I have to run at 5X to get any kind of response.  Things get pretty static if you turn on advanced graphics features.  Since I don't really care about shadows/reflections, I turned them off again.

My earlier post shows the game without shadows/reflections uses around 30% of each of four cores.  I am impressed by my new machine and the wine update, which seem to run this nicely.  Like all stochastic simulations this program eats machines.

I actually did this yesterday, and didn't notice a problem. I'm on Linux Mint 17.1 Cinnamon (haven't dared to upgrade to 17.3 since everything works, and a fresh install is recommended for 18.x due to massive amounts of changes between 17.x to 18.x). The game was on Paused when I Ctrl+Alt+Left or Right-arrowed out to a different workspace, but the game ran fine when I got back to it later.

The game was installed using PlayOnLinux on my end, though I had to manually create a shortcut myself afterwards, and I did get some error messages at the end of the installation process. Game has run fine so far, however (without mods), and I've got 4-5 years into a new town.
