Title: Abandoned - Pirate's Cove - Story 33
Post by: Abandoned on September 15, 2018, 05:50:11 AM
Intro

This story is a final test and a preview of another new mod by Kid, Old Town Ports & Pirates.  :)  Yes, my long awaited pirates  (Thank you, Kid).  However, I am afraid you will again have to wait a bit for a mods release.  There will be two stories connected with this mod. Pirate's Cove and Riverboat Junction.  I hope you will enjoy my stories while waiting for the mods release.

This story is the 33rd story in the Smallville Series and it begins in year 62 SVT, the year of the giant frog invasion of Summerset Swamp, story #24 .  This story tells the tale of two of the survivors from the town of Summerset.  The location of Pirate's Cove is on the west edge of that same swamp.  The cove is downriver from Monkstown and upriver to the east of Riverboat Junction.

Yes, weary traveler, I am one of the few who escaped Summerset unharmed, although I do suffer from ranidaphobia, the fear of frogs.  Not to be confused with bufonophobia, the fear of toads.  At least I no longer awake screaming in the night from dreams of giant frogs.  That day of the frog invasion was a nightmare.  I would not have survived at all had it not been for the river boatman.

I'm confused about mods though.  Does Kid have both Old Town (which includes new vanilla houses) and an additional mod called More Vanilla Houses?  Because I can't find a mod by that name.

Chapter 1

We were all eager that spring day back in Summerset to discover what the swamp thing was that we had cornered northwest of town.  It was a giant mother frog, harmless we thought.  The other frogs were not.  I can't tell you what caused the frog uprising, it may have been other mother frogs coming to seek revenge for what was done to their offspring or it may have been mother frog's offspring coming to her defense.  I don't know.  All I know is we headed back to town and suddenly there were giant frogs everywhere.

Like everyone else, I ran.  I just made it across the creek bridge only to find more frogs coming from that direct.  I was left with only 1 option, the houseboat on shore.  I ran for it, grabbed the mooring rope, and gave the boat a mighty shove as I jump aboard falling to the deck in the process.  The river current caught hold of the houseboat and carried me downriver.  The sights and sounds from shore were horrific, hundreds of croaking frogs and the yelling and screaming of fleeing citizens as they were caught and pulled limb from limb.  I saw the river boatman docked at the trading post, he was fighting off 2 giant frogs with his oars.  I was approaching the river bridge and to my horror it was covered with giant frogs.  Several frogs jumped into the water around me and one landed on the houseboat roof rocking the boat precariously.  I though I was done for when I heard a voice yell "jump".

It was the river boatman come to my rescue.  I did not hesitate for a moment, I trusted him to catch me as I took a flying leap off the houseboat and into his outstretched arms.  We fell to the floor of the riverboat with a momentary laugh of relief. He was quickly on his feet steering us away from further danger.  I fell asleep from sheer exhaustion when darkness fell but awoke screaming from a dream of a giant frog on the roof.  He was right there to take me in his arms to calm my fears.  He said he would build me a house so big I would not have to be afraid of anything up on the roof.

And true to his work, he did just that.

Chapter 2

My name is, Jacalynn and my husband is Kylandro.  He was the river boatman who rescued me.  The swamp was full of rivers, streams, and lakes but he seemed to know where he was going even in the dark.  He rowed the boat to shore just before dawn and said we should get some sleep, we'd have a busy day ahead of us.

It was not as swampy here, the ground was firmer and there were less moss and bugs.  There were no frogs.  We had a boat full of supplies but we would need wood and stone for building and more to eat than just the apples that we had.  Kylandro did some hunting while I gathered wild foods.  He set up a stockpile and we would build a storage shed.  We would sleep on the boat until we built a house.  There was a lot of work for the two of us to do and I wish I could have been more help but, as time went on, I did not feel very good, and I was tired all the time.  We at first feared some swamp fever but quickly ruled that out.  Kylandro thought it was shock, a delayed reaction to the Summerset nightmare.  I still occasionally woke up screaming.  By the end of summer, he built me the big house he promised me.  By winter our son, Brette, was born.

At the beginning of year 2, I had more time to take in our location and surroundings.  Kylandro was familiar with the area, this cove was downriver from Monkstown and Haunted Hollow which I knew from tales told were places known for pirates.  He said ships trying to outrun the pirates sometimes sailed into this cove and because of the tricky round-about turn often ended up shipwrecked on the far shore of the lake.  There was an overturned ship there now and probably a few shipwreck survivors trying to set up a small village while waiting for rescue.  There were probably some goods to be scavenged from the wreck that we could use when our riverboat supplies ran out.  He seemed to be in no hurry to return the riverboat to Riverboat Junction.

When we came down the small stream from Summerset in the dark, I did not notice the cave not far from where our house now stood.  Nothing to be concerned about, Kylandro said, there were many Smuggler's Caves throughout this area.  They made good storage places, especially for alcohol.  Whenever I voiced my concerns about pirates, he said we were safe here, "don't worry about it".

  ;D ah ha, he's a pirate?  ;D

Chapter 3

But I did worry about it, and I was worried there were things he was not telling me.  Like why we needed a wood shop with a lathe to carve peg legs.  Yes, peg legs like pirates use!  Was he planning on trading with pirates?  We would only have needed a chopping block for firewood.  And then he built a smith, there were only 2 of us, how many tools did we need?  I had a lot of questions.

And then in spring of year 3, I got some answers, but not the ones I wanted to hear.  I was out collecting wild foods when I saw it, a pirate ship flying the jolly roger flag.  It had just entered the inlet to the cove.  I dropped my basket and ran to tell Kylando.  He just looked at me as if not knowing what to say.  I said "didn't you hear me, there's a pirate ship coming into the cove".  He said yes he heard me, it was his ship.

I couldn't believe it.  The man I had been living with, the man whose son I bore, the man whose 2nd child I would soon have, was a pirate.  Yes, a pirate!   The river boatman who saved my life was a pirate!  He wasn't just a river boatman, he was a pirate!  And not just any pirate, he was a pirate captain.  It was his ship!

I was in shock as I watched the pirate ship anchor just off shore. Most of the crew would remain aboard. Only one couple came ashore, it was bad luck to have a woman onboard ship. The man had a peg leg which made it difficult to remain aboard ship. The couple built a house for themselves and one for their adult son.  A short jetty was built so the cargo could be unloaded from the hold of the ship.  It was a magnificent ship, but it was a pirate ship, a booty ship with ill-gotten goods.

The first watchtower was built not far from the ship and a pirate's headquarter was built by our mansion.  Without a doubt, this was now Pirate's Cove, and we were pirates.

Chapter 4

In spring of year 4, 8 survivors arrived from Summerset.  They were tired and rundown, each of the adults had a serious injury that needed tending.  Kylandro said they were welcome to stay, they would be taken care of here.  I recognized most of them from Summerset and they remembered Kylandro as one of the boatman.  They thought there were other survivors back in Summerset.  When they made their escape, many of the frogs were dying.  There were not enough swamp flies and other insects for that magnitude of frogs to eat, they were starving.

Our food supply was getting a bit low.  Whoever was able to went out to gather wild foods.  There were still plenty of goods to unload from the booty ship, walnuts, apples. and sea biscuits.  Cheers went up when 2 barrels of rum were unloaded.  Kylandro gave permission for a Pirate's Den to be built but not before there were enough good stone houses for everyone.  A still was set up out back of the houses to make more rum using the sugar from the booty ship.  The ship's pet parrot was perched before the doorway to the Den and squawked loudly until someone gave him a sea biscuit.

After Kylandro inspected the cargo aboard ship, I heard him say he wasn't surprised to find peg legs, it was typical of Riverboat Junction to try to make a profit off the victims of the swamp disaster.  I was surprised to see Kylandro bring a crate of seedlings off the ship.  The lemon tree seedlings should be planted right away.  He said it was important for the men to have citrus fruit when out to sea.  It prevented a disease called scurvy.  There were enough lemon tree seedlings for a small grove, the other seedlings looked like Smallville seedlings.  A forester could plant them and we would have to wait and see what trees they produced.  I asked how he knew so much and he said you learn a lot when you're a river boatman.   I was even more surprised when he ordered a school to be built.

The woman who took the lemon tree seedling to plant told me she remembered Kylandro coming to port in Summerset.  Her husband was trader for awhile and said there was often extra items thrown in with the trade or a sack or two of something was found on the dock after Kylandro left.  She thought those sacks weren't left by accident.  I only remembered that the river boatman would smile and wave at me as he rowed by.

Chapter 5

As he predicted, the shipwreck survivors who failed to find their way out of the swamp began building a small village near the site of the wreck.  Kylandro saw some swamp houses from the watchtower.  He asked me to go with him to pay a visit.  There were 17 survivors total.  A few agreed to move to town, the others refused and wanted nothing to do with us dirty pirates, and would stay where they were.  Dirty pirates?  Kylandro said if they needed anything they should not hesitate to ask.  They seemed to be doing okay. They had a small shed full of gathered foods, a stockpile with some building materials, and a fishing pier.  They were scavenging for anything of use they could find from the wrecked ship.

When we got back to town, Kylandro instructed watch to be kept on the village to make sure no signal fires were lit.  Jeffer had set up a stash near the watchtower and bridge to the village, he said he'd keep an eye open for rum and run over to the village to pillage it if any was found.  I was surprised when Kylandro patted him on the back and said "good man".  Kylandro looked at me and explained that pillaging was something pirates always do, there was no stopping it.  He knew the family, Jeffer had swamp fever as a child and was not able to learn things like other children did.  This was something he could do.  The villagers would be compensated for anything Jeffer took.

In spring of year 6, I was surprised when Kylandro said he was doing a riverboat run back into the swamp.  Our third child was not even a year old, and our fourth was due in a few months.  He would not be gone long but he wanted me to stay close to the house especially if the still was making rum and the Pirate's Den was serving it.  His men were good men but pirates were pirates especially when they were drinking rum.  He said two houses were being built close to ours, one for his first-mate and one for another trusted crewmen.  If I needed anything I was to go to them.  I watched Kylandro row away.

Chapter 6

While Kylandro was gone, a small area was set aside as a cemetery near the lemon grove, and a forester station was built across the creek to plant seedlings and harvest trees.  Logs would be put on the swamp village stockpiles whether they wanted our help or not.  I had taken them some apple tree seedlings to compensate for the scavenged rum that Jeffer pillaged.  They were not very friendly or nice, one woman called me a cheap pirate's wench.  She made it sound like a bad thing.  She took the seedlings.

Our daughter Imogeneva was 3 months old when Kylandro returned in late autumn.  He laughed and said "come give your pirate a hug, wench" when I told him about the swamp woman and seedlings.  All teasing aside, he said he found things back in the swamp to be even worse than he expected.  He called a meeting with his top crewmen.  Swamp people were in dire need of more than we could provide.  He wanted a port built so we could trade for needed items.  There were several river boatmen who could be trusted with our location.  He would send word.

The small port was completed by early spring of year 7.  There would be no lighthouse, any ship that entered our cove entered at their own risk.  We had other ways of making our presence know in these waters.  I thought of the shipwreck and found it hard to believe that Kylandro had something to do with causing that ship to run aground.  The shipwreck survivors were doing okay though.  The apple trees were thriving and the villagers built a small workshop to make their own tools and clothes.

Our newly planted seedlings also showed new growth and as Kylandro said, they were Smallville seedlings.  There were birch and pines and to our surprise, some wild oats as well.  And as he had said, things were very bad back in the swamp.  A couple with 2 children arrived by houseboat and confirmed that the situation was dire.  The injured survivors could not provide food for themselves and the dying frogs were causing diseases and more misery.  They would have stayed to help but had their own children to think about.  The sight of the houseboat brought back memories of that last day in Summerset and I again awoke screaming from nightmares of giant frogs.  Those nights especially, I was very happy to be a pirate's wench.

Chapter 7

Kylandro decided he had to make an emergency run back to the swamp.  He ordered a small warehouse to be built on the swamp stream and wanted as many herbs and nonperishable foods taken there as we could spare.  Walnuts and sea biscuits from the booty ship would be good choices.  He was very pleased when the swamp villagers donated several crates of apples.  A small pile of  peg legs were also stacked in the boat.

Just as he was about to leave, Ladarion, the seed trader, arrived.  Kylandro told me to trade whatever I had to, even the rum, to get the wheat seeds the trader had.  Me?  Why not the first-mate?  Oh, the first mate was left in charge of the ship and the crew.   Okay then.  I would get those wheat seeds.

Kylandro just left when Havenita, the resource merchant arrived.  Oh my gosh, he had a treasure map!  Yes, a treasure map.  I wanted that treasure map.  I asked the first mate what I should do.  He said he would not tell me what to do, I was the captain's woman, it was for me to decide.  At least he did not call me pirate's wench.  He did say these river boatmen were trusted friends of the captain, if they had a treasure map to offer then it was genuine and there would be a profit to be made by trading for it.  He smiled kindly and said I should not worry that Kylandro would be displeased with any decision I would make.

I asked Havenita if he would wait until I got together enough trade goods together for the treasure map.  He would not take any rum because he was on his way back to Riverboat Junction.  They would only trade it to fellow pirates for a huge profit, better to take it to the other pirates ourselves.  Oh, so this river boatman was also a pirate.   He said he would wait, he was in no hurry to get back to the Junction.

Kylandro had been in a hurry, he arrived back just before the end of the year.  He was pleased to hear I got the wheat seeds.  Our 4 children were happy to have him back and so was I.  Year 7 had been a good year.  Pirate's Cove had a population of 49, 29 adults, 4 students, and 16 young children.

Chapter 8

A 12'x12' wheat field was planted in Spring of year 8 and a bakehouse was built next to the field.  The wheat would be milled and baked into sea biscuits, a staple food for long sea voyages because of its keeping quality.

By then I had already made the trade for the treasure map and Havenita went on his way.  I was so excited.  Kylandro said I was like one of the children with a new toy.  The map was a piece of cloth with a rough sketch of our cove done with a piece of coal.  There was a spot marked with an X.  That must be where the treasure was buried.  It was late in the year before I had time to look for the spot, it was near the smuggler's cave.  I took the map to the spot and scratched an X into the ground where we should dig.  Makaylynne from the houseboat came to help me dig, we took turns whenever we had time.  Her husband, Ranson, had volunteered to take the riverboat to Summerset with more herbs and food so he was not there in early spring of year 9 when we dug up the treasure chest.  Kylandro himself came to pick up the chest and take it to storage.  It was then taken to the trading post where it would be traded for needed items.  Indeed, a nice profit had been made.

Chapter 9

We needed more supplies for our growing population and also for Summerset and other swamp settlements that needed assistance.  Another forester and hunter were set up across the creek to the northwest.  A second gatherer was also built in that area.  The first one built near the swamp village was always busy collecting wild foods and wild oats.  This forester would plant the last of the Smallville seedling so there was bound to be more wild oats growing here as well.

Kylandro and his crew went out for another booty run.  They targeted merchant ships and riverboats from the wealthier settlements like Mountain Mines and Riverview Resort, those who were living in luxury, sailing around in fancy ships, and making and selling gemstone jewelry while others starved.  Their goods would be traded back to Riverboat Junction to help the poor and needy.  There was even talk about building another ship.

The booty ship had only been gone a short time when another ship was spotted entering the cove.  It must have been avoiding our pirate ship, as planned.  It was late in the year and the northwest winds caught hold of those fancy sails.  We knew it would not make it around that sharp bend in the river.  It overturned when it hit the far shore of the lake near the watchtower.  There would be a lot of good materials to be scavenged from it.  The 5 passengers said they would be willing to work for us if we just didn't hurt them.  Hurt them?  What kind of monsters did they think we were?  I had fruit baskets made up and delivered to their new swamp houses where they chose to live.  They would learn to help themselves and maybe learn to help others too.  They would come to no harm while living here with us.

Chapter 10

Kylandro and the crew returned early, in late autumn.  It had been a good run and there was still plenty of time to make a run back into the swamp with some of the booty.  He knew my look of concern and explained without being asked.  No towns were raided, no one was hurt.  As always, they patrolled the common trade routes that led to Riverboat Junction.  Merchant ships and riverboats heading there threw merchandise overboard to lighten their load before fleeing from the pirate ship.  Occasionally, a ship unfamiliar with the area headed into the cove.  The merchandise they threw overboard had already been picked up.  Kylandro said he knew I would have no problem dealing with the shipwreck survivors. He was anxious to know what I decided to trade my treasure chest for.  He laughed and gave me a hug when I told him.  We now had a pasture with 3 piglets in it.  And we were getting fertilizer.  A small greenhouse was producing tropical fruits.

In spring of year 11, 6 swamp dwellers arrived.  According to them, things were pretty much back to normal in Summerset Swamp.  There have been no new sightings of giant frogs anywhere and the insect population was also back to normal.  There were the normal cases of swamp fever and life was just as difficult as it always had been, but that was life in the swamp.  They would be happy to stay with us at least for the time being.

The villagers seemed quite content to be living here and have adjusted well.  They asked if they could have the wild flax they saw being gathered and were soon making cool linen clothes in their swamp workshop.  Before long some of those cool comfortable clothes appeared in our sheds, storage crates, and the pirate's stash.  Jeffer was no longer pillaging the village, he was now living in it.  He was married to one of the village girls and they had 2 children. The villagers also brought their beeswax to the trading post for us to trade away as we saw fit.  We traded for sugar cane seeds that autumn.

At the end of year 12 Pirate's Cove was doing quite well.  We had a population of 75, 43 adults, 10 students, and 22 young children.  Our education rate was only 9% but it would improve since we had more children in school now.

Nothing like a sea-going Robin Hood for a good story.

Question: Given that I see palm trees everywhere in Pirate's Cove, what exactly is the point of a tropical greenhouse? Wouldn't all that stuff grow outside in regular orchards (well, maybe not dates since they don't like high humidity)? And, by the way, I wouldn't waste any space on kumquats. The only fruit I ever tasted where the peel tasted better than the fruit.  :o  Nasty, bitter little things--don't let the cuteness fool you. Unless you are going to soak them in rum, but the rum is probably better straight.

In spring of year 13 there was another baby piglet in the pasture and the wheat and sugar cane were planted.  Caronda, who worked the still, looked at the crop and asked what she was supposed to do with that.  Up until now she had been using sugar from the booty ship to make rum.  Pirates for the most part were uneducated and lazy, it was easier to pillage for food and things they needed than it was to grow or make them for themselves.  Well, if they wanted more rum, they would have to learn some things.  We built a sugar mill out behind the Pirate's Den.  The sugar cane would be milled into sugar that would then be used in the still.  Barrels of rum would go to Pirate's Den or to the trading post.  Our riverboat traders would see that it got delivered to fellow pirates in need.  They would also deliver peglegs to those in need.  Wooden legs did not last very long in the soggy swamp soils, at least Summerset had stone roads.

I was at the trading posts every time a trader came to port.  I was hoping for another treasure map, maybe one that would unearth a bigger treasure.  Havenita, the resource merchant, was keeping his eyes and ears open for one but had had no luck finding another one so far.  He did have information for Kylandro through.  It seems there have been some pirate raids on small villages, and several river boatmen reported being injured and robbed.  There was a rumor going around Riverboat Junction that one of the warehouses had been pillaged.  There could be trouble brewing.

Kylandro thought it best to be safe than sorry and ordered another ship to be built.  Though we were managing well on our own now, the booty enabled us to help the poor folks back in the swamp.  They no longer wanted hand-outs but wanted to trade what they could for what they needed.  The booty insured that we had enough of what was needed.  We only hoped they were not now the ones doing the pirating.

By the end of year 13 we needed firewood.

Chapter 12

The villagers insisted they could help out with firewood.  We continued to put logs on their stockpiles, they would help by chopping some of them into firewood for us and for their own needs.  A tiny chopper and firewood shed were built near the bridge.  Some of the firewood was taken to the swamp stream warehouse for the next swamp run.  Jeffer, who was the pillager, was now working at that warehouse.  Everyone was so proud of him.  He was doing a good job even though he was uneducated.

Kylandro was upset when he learned our school was full and a few children missed getting an education.  All 4 of our children attended our only school.  Again the villagers stepped in and build a swamp school not far from the bridge.  They had several children that would reach school age this year or next.  Our oldest boy, Brette, would finish school next year.  Brette always had a lot of questions about Riverboat Junction, the river boatmen, and about piracy.  He often asked his father why he became a pirate.  Kylandro said it was time he had a talk with the boy.  I was interested in what he would have to say, it was something he never wanted to talk about.

Kylandro's parents like many others were displaced by floods and food shortages.  They traveled downriver to Riverboat Junction where they heard there was housing, jobs, and food, they had 2 young children.  Kylandro's mother died of yellow fever shortly after they arrived.  His sister was too old for school, and besides, the school was too far from the worker cabins where they lived.  At age 7 she got a job as a worker in the port tavern nearby where their father became a frequent customer.  She would bring food home after work, sometimes she worked late and those nights there was no food.  One night their drunken father fell from the pier and drowned, then there were just the 2 of them. They would manage, she would work more nights.  She insisted he go to school to be educated.  She died during childbirth at age 16.

There was nothing keeping him in Riverboat Junction after that so he became a river boatman, but he was not good at that job.  He was always short of merchandise when he returned from his swamp run, he just couldn't leave people to starve because they didn't have enough trade goods for food or seeds or tools.  So when he was waylaid by pirates, there was no way he was giving up the rest of his cargo.  The pirates were battered and bruised but impressed with Kylandro's skills with the oars.  He made a trade deal with them, alcohol for tropical fruit, and he returned to the Junction with a full cargo.  He learned a lot from those men.  Soon he had a ship and a crew and a riverboat trade route between Mountain Mines, Monkstown, and the swamp.  They were none the wiser that he was a pirate and not a Riverboat Junction trade merchant.  It was not until he rescued me from Summerset that he wanted a home and a home base and Pirate's Cove came to be.  Kylandro was only 17 at that time, only a few years older than our son Brette is now.

Kylandro was well respected now and had a lot of connections with both river boatmen and pirates, so when Ethele, the food trader, came to port with froglegs, Kylandro sent out word that no one should make any trade deals involving frog legs, return them to Riverboat Junction.  Swamp dwellers must be discouraged from harvesting froglegs.  Who would be so foolish to be harvesting froglegs after all that happened back in Summerset?

Chapter 13

Our son, Brette, wanted to know that too.  In fact, Brette always wanted to know something about trading and pirating and ships.  He was an educated adult now and tried several different jobs.  He moved to one of the newly built rowhouses near the still where he was now working  but he was restless.  Kylandro let the boy do several swamp runs and even took him on a booty run.  I was not happy about that but Brette was thrilled and could talk of little else except that pirate ship until the spring piglets were born.  He had an idea which sounded like a good one.

Our pigs multiplied enough that we now had pork and it was delicious. We agreed with Brette, much meatier than froglegs.  He wanted to trade piglets to folks back in the swamp.  The pigs thrived here, they loved wallowing in the soggy swamp soil.  They were easy to care for and multiplied well, Brette thought swamp settlements could thrive by raising and trading pigs and pork.  It was something to think about.

Our Pirate's Cove has sure thrived and grown in 15 years.  Our pirate's mansion and headquarters grew into a small port settlement producing peglegs, sea biscuits, pork, and rum.  The swamp villagers are as happy and healthy as the rest of us.  Together we number 91, 48 adults, 19 students, and 24 young children.  Our education rate is now 15%

So, weary traveler, I know you will be as happy here in Pirate's Cove as we are.  You are welcome to make your home in the swamp village or here with us in Pirate's Cove, but I am afraid you can not go to Riverboat Junction until we are sure the knowledge of our secret location is safe with you.

The End
