Title: Abandoned - Middleton in The Shire of Middle Earth- Story 59
Post by: Abandoned on August 19, 2020, 08:20:54 AM
Intro

This is the 59th Story in the Smallville Series and tell the tale of a settlement in The Shire in the northeast section of the World Map.  The settlement is in the foothills of Misty Mountain east of Crystal Canyon and Misty Meadows (stories 36 & 37).   Like Crystal Canyon, The Shire is as old as the hills themselves.  This particular town, however, was settled in year 50 SVT by 5 families of young people from neighboring small family settlements.  They named their town Middleton because it is in The Shire which once was part of Middle Earth.

What do you mean "what am I" ?  I'm a hobbit.  Come sit by the fire, weary traveler, and I'll tell you a tale about Hobbits and The Shire.

Good morning Abandoned.

Keeping in mind I have been gone for several months there are a few mods I am unfamiliar with: Rural Citizens, Orchard Forester, and Strawberries. By Rural Citizen do you mean the Rural Clothes override Kid made?

And also if you would please, what mod gave you the Valley-Dry map option?

Thank you.  :)

@CookieBarrel  :)  sorry, no My Precious ring in this tale, only the ring of butter at the bottom of popcorn bowl  ;D

@MarkAnthony Rural Citizens is the original clothes made by Jinxie and 1 which Kid included in override package (with permission)  They are the same mod.  Orchard Forester and Strawberries are both old mods from Black Liquid site.  New Maps is by The Chuckles Start and I believe from Banished Info site.  :)

Alright thanks Abandoned.
None of those mods are listed at either site in their current state and Black Liquid's site has even seem to have gotten worse as it now throws up a bunch of coding errors at the top. Wasn't important as I said I just didn't recognize them and wanted to read up on them to see what they provided.

Prologue

No, weary traveler, we are not halflings, we're Hobbits.  Halflings are small young people with a lot to learn.  We're experienced adults.  And no, were not Elves or Dwarves either, though there are similarities.  Like the Elves we have slightly pointed ears and we share their love of nature, but we live off the products of our farm fields rather than the off the wilds of nature and Elven magic.  Like the Dwarves we are not very tall, but we're not as stocky and strong as they are.  We too dig in the earth but the Dwarves dig for ores and precious minerals and gemstones, we dig to create the hobbit holes we live in and store our food in.  We're more humanlike than the others, except we have bigger feet than the Humans and we don't like wearing shoes.

We Hobbits are forever grateful to the Elves, Dwarves, and Humans who fought alongside our ancestors in the Battle for Middle Earth.  It all began when hobbit Frodo Baggins inherited a ring from his cousin Bilbo Baggins.  Gandalf, the Grey Wizard, recognized it as the lost one belonging to Sauron, the Dark Lord, who would use its power to take over Middle Earth.  Gandalf advised Frodo to take the ring away from the Shire.  Frodo, his 2 cousins, Merry Brandybuck and Pippin Took, and his good friend and gardener Sam Gamgee set out to do just that.  After many perils they arrived in the Elven Refuge of Rivendell.  There it was decided that the ring must be destroyed in the Fire of Mount Doom in the Forge of Mordor where it was created. The Fellowship of the Ring was formed to carry out that task.  The Fellowship consisted of it's leader Gandalf the wizard, Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin the hobbits, Aragor a ranger from the North, Gimi a dwarf warrior, Legolas a woodland elf, and the human Boromir.  They set off and attempted to cross  Misty Mountain but had to turn back and go through the Dwarven Mines of Moria instead.  Eventually the ring was destroyed, and Middle Earth and The Shire were saved.  We are descendants of those Hobbit heroes.

Chapter 1

And here we are now, weary traveler, in the peaceful beauty of The Shire, in the town of Middleton we Hobbits founded in the foothills of Misty Mountain.  There were 15 of us who settled here, 10 adults with 5 children, with some seeds and a few farm animals.  We came from different family farmsteads but knew each other through social gatherings to celebrate the elder's birthdays and other special occasions.  We hobbits love to socialize, and eat.  At the last midsummer festival it was agreed that the weather indeed was getting worse and crops were suffering a lot of damage from heat and high winds. Larger settlements were suffering some food shortages.  Our 5 families decided to set out on our own heading north.  Our families wanted us to go south closer to O'Leary's farm rather than north towards Misty Mountain and the Mines of Moria.  We thought it would be cooler in the foothills and hopefully with fewer windstorms, we went north.  We would be but a few day's walk from our homes.

We were closer to Misty Mountain than we planned but the foothills had wonderful places for our built-in hobbit holes.  The earth homes were quite spacious with rooms built back into the hills.  They were cooler in summer and warmer in winter.  We built free-standing hobbit holes also, many of which had lower levels reached by ladders or circular stairways.   We were still deciding where to begin building when Tevie came running to tell us he had found a perfect fishing tree over on the river and wanted his house built near there.  He said there were a lot of mushrooms in the forest there.  We immediately went to pick some, everyone knows how much we hobbits like mushrooms. Oh, well, now you know.

A hobbit hole was built near the fishing tree and Tevie's wife, Libert, set about making it homey.  Once the cows and chickens were fenced in, 2 built-in hobbit holes were built for the 2 families.  They already planted corn and potatoes, plus the berry bushes I dug up from the forest for them.  They would cut their own firewood.  A free-standing hobbit hole was built a bit east of there for the 4th family.  The hunter's hideout built earlier was not far away.  A free-standing home was built for Tavar and me next to the 10'x12' wheat field.  I planted carrots while Tavar built me a potting shed.  My mother always said I was a throwback to my ancestor Sam Gamgee who was a gardener.  My name is Verenata but I'm called Vera and I was a Gamgee before I married a Brandybuck.  Tavar built a cover for my wash lines and a cover for each of the supply wagons.  We were surprised when the temperature dropped and it snowed.  It must be because of Misty Mountain that the weather was not quite as mild as the rest of The Shire. But our pantries and supply carts were almost full.  There was fish and venison, potatoes, carrots, onions, roots, corn, wheat, and wild oats.  Did I tell you how much we hobbits like to eat?

Chapter 2

Tavar built a small coop and a cover for the chickens and another cover for the cows.  The winter past quickly, we were warm and cozy in our hobbit holes with soups and stews bubbling in our fireplace kettles.  By early spring my carrots were coming up and there were rabbits in the patch.  The Proudfoot carrots are named after a very respected hobbit family.  Patty Proudfoot could walk through a carrot patch without stepping on a single carrot.  Everyone knows it is very bad luck to step on a carrot.   Oh, well, now you know, weary traveler.

We had just finished building an apprentice school, tailor, and smith when 7 hobbits and their 3 children arrived from nearby.  Two years in a row their crops were destroyed by heat and high winds.  They would stay with us until the weather improved.  A smaller home was built by the hunter's hideout and a larger one by the wheat field, they were skilled hunters and farmers.  You don't need  formal schooling to be a farmer, hunter, or gatherer, and hobbit children learn those skills from their parents at an early age.  But more often than not, children want to do something else.  Tevie and Libert's 2 oldest children learned how to fish from their father but they didn't want to be fisherman.  Alejandrea wanted to be a tailor and Anastacey wanted to be a smith.  They would learn the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic in the classroom but, most of the time, they would be apprentices learning from the skilled workers themselves. The children could learn whatever profession they wanted to learn.  I would teach in the classroom and make arrangements for their apprenticeships.

Despite being the new teacher, I had plenty of time to care for newborn son, Harvel, and for potting and planting in my own yard and in others.  We hobbits love flowers.  Tavar was tending the carrots and building tables, chairs, and benches in his spare time.  Everyone wanted some for their front yards where they could sit and wave to passersby.  By the end of the year the last family and their eldest daughter had homes.  They planted wheat, beans and an apple tree.  Valoris gave them a few chickens and they would cut their own firewood.  Since we all share, all the children  were very excited about the apples and beans.  Hobbit children love fruits and vegetables.  Yes really, and milk too.  Where did you say you were from, weary traveler?

I see you use Settler's roads. Very nice. They give a homey feeling.  :)
Do you think there are too few 'built-in' buildings?
I have them freestanding. Usually, there are not many suitable mountains.

@angainor88  ;D Thanks for posting that video of Sam making rabbit stew without any taters  ;D  Video fits Hobbit story perfectly, you'll see.  Love the video, love po ta toes  ;D

@kid1293 Those Settler roads match wonderfully.  I think just the right amount of build-ins, I tried unsuccessfully to find a mountain map that would allow enough space for fields, pastures, and other buildings.  I tried 2 other map generating mods before finding valley map with hills in good spots for the built-ins.  This map is working very well, it is what I picture the Shire to be.  :)

Chapter 3

By the beginning of year 3 the new folks were all settled in and a new Tiny town hall was built.  Being the teacher, I would take care of the town records and teach some arithmetic there.  Tavar had a few surprises for me in early spring that would help with my teaching duties.  The first was when he moved my washlines because he need the space for a surprise he was building me to solve the problem of rabbits in the carrot patch.  He built me a garden with little rabbit hobbit holes, an apple tree, and some cabbage plants.  With the leftover scrap wood he built a small birdhouse over by the washlines and a small table for the bee hive he found.  I was delighted with the surprises and happy that I would be able to teach the children about the birds and the bees and, when they asked where babies came from, I could show them baby bunnies in the cabbage patch.  Yes, from the cabbage patch.  Where were you told babies come from when you were their age, weary traveler?

We were all surprised in spring by the arrival of 13 hobbits with 4 young children and with what they had to tell us.  Their settlement was all but destroyed by a devastating wind storm but they all survived.  The folks at O'Leary's Farm weren't so lucky, only a handful of the young people survived.  The newcomers brought news from our families who were all alive and well and sent them to us.   We made them welcome and began planning where to build more homes.  That afternoon the mournful sound of the bagpipes could be heard coming from one of the hobbit holes.

Two houses and a root cellar were build near our house.  I could use some help with the gardens and beekeeping.  The families were very happy to have their pantries filled with meat and potatoes and other vegetables.  They'd been living on gathered foods for a while.  We wanted to be able to help other farm settlements in The Shire that were struggling, our storage units were near capacity.  We built a small barn next to the stockpile.  One by one we built homes for the other families.  It began to snow in autumn delaying the work.  The last house was not completed until early spring of year 4.

Chapter 4

As soon as the weather warmed in spring several of the men headed back to our hometowns with supplies and to be sure that all was well.  They would be gone a few weeks.  In the mean time we built a tiny trading post.  We were sure a river boatman would deliver more supplies to our families for us if needed.  We needed more vegetable seed but wondered if we would have enough trade goods.  Our rabbit garden was now providing us with some furs so we could begin making some warm coats and we could trade some of the hide ones.  We also could spare some tools and some firewood.  We built a tiny chopper by the main stockpile and another by the trading post.  We would have logs to chop from the land we were clearing behind the main stockpile.

We were getting a bit more rain and the mountain mist seemed to settle more this year than before, but there were no storms and outside work was done without interruption.  The men returned with good news, all was indeed well back home.  Many trees were destroyed and the orchards took a beating but life in The Shire was returning to normal. The survivors from O'Leary's farm were now settled in Sunrise Mountain range to the east of us, they too were doing well.  Our folks were now glad that we had gone north instead of south.

Here in Middleton it had been a rough few years but not that rough.  We would pot as many tree seedlings as we could to send back home.  Tavar took over the potting shed since I was busy teaching.  And then we thought it was time we Hobbits had some fun.  The land we cleared was the perfect spot to build a tavern.  Everyone was excited.  The building was completed and named The Green Dragon.  The wheat harvest had been good and the ale was brewing.  It was wonderful to be able to socialize and just have fun.  Everyone in town was there to celebrate.  Extra tables, chairs, and benches had to be place outside.  We could hear the pipes and the flutes that were being played inside, and there was singing and dancing and laughter, inside and out.  Life was good again in The Shire.

Chapter 5

Yes, life was good and getting better.  In early spring of year 5, Gemmalee, the seed merchant arrived at our trading post.  He only had pumpkin seeds but would be able to get us any seeds we wanted.  He confirmed that there had been widespread damage to crops and trees and he would gladly take any foods and seedlings we had to trade.  We traded for the pumpkin seeds and placed several orders.  We were thrilled.  Did I tell you, weary traveler, how much hobbits like to eat and socialize?  We celebrated the pumpkin seeds and spring planting season at the Green Dragon.

We had some decisions that needed to be made.  The pumpkin seeds were planted in a new field south of my carrot patch but we would need more space for more crop fields and orchards.  Hopefully a livestock merchant would come to port with sheep.  We would need room for the sheep to graze.  Our log supply was good so far but we would need to set aside a forest area for tree planting and harvesting.  There was an area across the river that might serve that purpose well if we built a bridge.  There was a nice area east of the tavern and north of the hunting area, and another nice area north of the fishing tree.  There was a large area southeast of town, it was a bit rocky but had fewer trees to cut.  Perhaps a better location for crop fields.

The first decision that was made however was to set aside an area for a town cemetery.  It needed to be fairly close to town.  A site not far from the fishing tree was selected and a fence was erected.  A rough tunnel was dug through the hills to the northwest.  Another tunnel was dug to the area southeast of town.  We loved the rolling hills of The Shire.

We celebrated midsummer at the Green Dragon, and then we celebrated the harvest.  Everyone in town had pumpkins to eat and pumpkin seeds to toast by their fires that autumn.  Our woodpiles and our pantries were full.  We could sit back with our feet up by the fire and wait till spring.

Chapter 6

The Misty Mountain mist was heavy again in spring and the mushrooms were plentiful.  Oh, I already told you that hobbits really like mushrooms, good to know, weary traveler.  Anyways, our storage units were again nearly full.  We built a Tiny market by the pumpkin field and put out a few more storage crates and barrels.  We also clear land and constructed a pasture near the tailor hoping a riverboat merchant would arrive soon with sheep.  We hobbits liked our bright colorful clothes, but warm coats would be welcome to offset the damp chill of early spring.

In spring a man with his wife, 2 children, and his older brother arrived.  Like us they decided to head north where it was cooler.  They heard the sounds of heavy digging and feared some fools were attempting to mine in these hills so close to Moria which would bring extremely bad luck to all The Shire.  Well, of course we knew that, even though others though it was just foolish superstition, we knew better.  We assured them it was only our hobbit holes and 2 tunnels that we dug.  They agreed to stay with us but would go no closer to Misty Mountain.

As it turned out they too were descendants of Sam Gamgee and they had the recipes to Sam's favorite stews.  Did I tell you .. , yes, weary traveler, hobbits like to eat.  Anyways, a home was built for the family of 4 near the Green Dragon and they immediately set up a big stew pot.  It wasn't long before Sam's favorite rabbit stew with herbs and lots of taters was boiling in the pot. What are taters? Potatoes, all the stew recipes call for lots of potatoes.  We hobbits really like potatoes.  More tables and chairs were put up outside the tavern and we celebrated the arrival of our kinsmen.

We were a bit concerned when their 7 year old son took over as brewer in the tavern, he was uneducated in brewing and we feared production would fall.  Tavar said it didn't matter, we were not growing enough wheat for a steady supply to the tavern and, as of now,  there was more than enough ale to go around. The boy's sister became the 11 apprentice student and perhaps later she would take over the job.  The boy's father laughed and said he was surprised his brother wanted a house by the south tunnel so far from the tavern.

Oh no, I hope all that digging doesn't wake anything up!

And letting a 7-year old take over the beer brewing also seems like a potential disaster for hobbits :P

Chapter 7

The Green Dragon was now the town's favorite gathering place.  The ale was kept cool in the cellar beneath the tavern and was quite refreshing when folks would stop for a midday break.  Someone suggested that a nice piece a cheese would go good with the ale for a midday meal, and soon there was a dairy milkcan set up by the nearby cow farmyard.  The cheese would store well in our pantries and root cellars too.

A second wheat field was planted that spring closer to the tavern, and across from that a farmyard was planted with corn, cabbage, and more potatoes for the stew pot, although on hot days in summer, lighter midday meals of raw vegetables, fruits, and cheeses was preferred.  The days were longer in the summer months and hobbit folk would gather later in the day for a bowl of stew and merrymaking preferring to relax in the shade during the heat of the day.  When the weather got colder and the days got shorter folks would have their main meal at midday at the tavern, some brought along their kettles from home to fill with stew to keep warm by their fires for a later evening meal.

That autumn of year 7 turned cool and rainy early.  The mist came down from the mountains in the north and also rose from the warmer ground when the cool rain began to fall.  Mushrooms sprouted abundantly.  We all ran barefoot through the forest trying to be the one to find the most mushrooms. The forest rang with laughter and the sound of the pipes and flutes carries on the still misty air.  It was perfect soup weather and kettles of fragrant mushroom soup were soon bubbling at the newly build market soup stand.  There were plenty of downed branches east of the tavern's wheat field to keep both the stew pot and the soup kettle supplied throughout the winter.

Chapter 8

Our storage facilities were nearly full again.  We had a lot of beef, fish, venison, and rabbit meat.  The rabbit meat was being used in Sam's stew, and soup was still being made with mushrooms.  Stew and soup were wonderful on cold day but we decided to make sausages for something different to have on warmer summer days.  A sausage workplace was built not far from the farmyard cows.  It was convenient to stop on the way home from the tavern to pick up some beef sausages.

The town's inventory records showed we had plenty of leather for hide coats but still not many furs for warm coats.  We hobbits tend to spend more time at home in front of our fires in winter but warmer coats would be nice when we had to be outside.  Finally in autumn, Verly, the livestock merchant, arrived with sheep.  We traded for all six that he had with him.  Our pasture near the tailor would someday provide wool for warm coats, hopefully sooner if Verly returned with more sheep.

All too soon it was winter and the stew and soup kettles were bubbling again.  Did I tell you how good the beef sausage is?  No, no matter, weary traveler, you can judge for yourself.  I browned some sausages earlier and added potatoes, onions, and carrots to the pot.  The vegetable browned nicely with the sausages and are almost done.  We can eat right here in front of the fire.

Chapter 9

It snowed in early spring and when the warmer wind blew, the mist was heavy over the hills and the river.  We had begun building a bridge across the river thinking a lighthouse might be needed to guide the river boatmen to us.  The weather kept us from completing the bridge and Verly returned with more sheep before it was finished.   He said he'd never seen the mist this thick before, a lighthouse would be a welcome sight.  We had room in the pasture for 4 of the 6 sheep he had.  We would soon have wool for warm coats.

It wasn't long after Verly left that 2 families arrived in town and echoed what Verly said about the fog.  The young couple, like us, had set off on their own.  They had stopped at a spring festival to buy food and then became lost in the thick mist in the moors east of Misty Meadows.  They were very glad to have found us when they did, Suellamae was about to give birth to her first child.  The other couple was a bit older with 2 children but the oldest wanted a small hobbit hole of his own.  They were farmers and when we said we planned more farm fields in the area beyond the south tunnel, they chose to live together there.  Not only were they farmers but millers and bakers as well.  The newcomers gave instructions to our builders and soon a beautiful mill was built and they had plans for a bakery.   In fact they had in the past entered their grains, flour, and baked goods at harvest festivals in The Shire.

Over the years since we've been here in Middleton, we've taken turns going back home to visit family and friends and to attend special events and festivals.  Let me tell you, weary traveler, I have tasted some of those baked goods.  We were now living in Hobbit Heaven.

Chapter 10

We didn't have enough wheat for the mill but we had plenty of corn.  That winter we all had fragrant breads and biscuits made with that corn flour baking on the racks inside our fireplaces.  Our soups and stews never tasted so good as they did accompanied by those breads and biscuits.  And just when we thought life in the Shire couldn't get any better, it did.  In spring of year 10 the bakery was build and it began making donuts, yes, donuts.  They baked some plain cake donuts, and some that were covered with apple glaze, and some that were filled with apples that were like jelly donuts when they were done baking.   They all smelled and tasted heavenly.  Wait, I'll go get us some.

Well, there were soon tables, chairs, and benches set up outside the bakery.  It was a wonderful spot to stop for 2nd breakfast.  What, oh, um, we hobbits are early risers and for breakfast will usually eat what was left over from dinner still warming by the fire in the soup or stew pot.  Then by mid morning we are hungry again and will have oats and berries, maybe eggs, a 2nd breakfast.  So, those donuts were eaten as soon as they were baked.  I think it was a long time before any donuts made it into storage.

Another small storage barn was built through the tunnel there by the bakery.  Land was cleared for another field of wheat to be planted in spring.  There was plenty of room there for more farm fields, farmyards, and hobbit homes.

Soon fall and winter were approaching again.  Tavar was asked to build covers over some of the tables by the tavern and the bakery.  It was nice in the summer not to have a fire burning inside, but most of us like cooking at home in the winter.  Singles and young couples often went home to their mothers for supper in the winter but there were several single men and couples who liked to eat and socialize outside the Green Dragon even in the cold and snow.  The covers were most welcome.

Covers were built over the new stockpile that was built before land was cleared for another farm field  east of the Green Dragon.  A large barn was build and a hobbit home for one of the young singles.  We were planning to start planting fruit trees but the farmer and the laborers claimed there were more dead trees and downed branches it that area.  It seemed to be windier, and the wind coming from the north in spring seemed warmer.  It did not make sense that the wind from the north was warmer but, if that were indeed the case, that would not be good for fruit trees.  If they bloomed sooner than normal the blossoms would be damaged by spring snow and frosts, and even if they weren't there would be no bees to pollinate them.  Better to plant sturdier and hardier nut trees in that area.  We choose chestnuts and pecans and built 2 orchard foresters to plant them.

Meanwhile Rainey by the hunter's hideout decided to plant some plum trees.  There was a small clearing behind her house.  We could hardly wait for fresh picked plums but it would be awhile before a fruit gatherer was needed, or an orchard harvester for the chestnuts and pecans.

Chapter 12

In spring of year 12, I did a thorough population assessment for 2 reasons, first to determine if we needed another apprentice school, and second to see if it was time to build more homes for young people.  Middleton's population was 77 with 45 adults, 22 students, and 10 young children.  One child was 6 years old and would start school soon, the others were ages 3 and under.  One student who lived far from the school was age 14 and about to leave school.  There were 4 12-year-olds who would finish their apprenticeships very soon too.  We would not need another school anytime soon.

Records showed there were 28 families but only 21 homes.  However my assessment revealed that a few of the homes had a single occupant and the adult children living at home were not of an age to pair up and start families. We did however built 1 house east of the new storage barn to get at least one worker closer to the nut orchards.

Records also showed that our overall health was a bit low, we hoped more fruit and nuts would remedy that.  We were surprised there already was a small plum harvest.  Laborers or a fruit gatherer would have to collect the crates.  We could have plum sauce on our morning oats and plum dumplings for supper.

Zayde, the general goods merchant, brought seed potatoes.  It was too late to plant that year but next year we would plant them in the field where the wheat was being harvested.  The potatoes would be closer to the stew pot and the wheat would be closer to the storage barn.  There were other changes too.  The bakery was now baking bread and the dairy was making butter.  Fresh warm bread with butter was a meal in itself but we hobbits do like our meat and potatoes.

Chapter 13

The fruit gatherer collected wild foods as well as the plums, so we built an orchard gatherer workshop near each of the nut orchards.  We assigned only one worker who would gather wild foods until there were nuts to harvest.

The potatoes got planted In early spring of year 13, and I  notice Tavar had been busy, there was a new chicken coop by the farmyard there.  I saw there were several more birdhouses around town now too and a decorative wheelbarrow planter, like the one he made me earlier, was now in front of the chestnut gatherer's workshop.  In front of her house, Rainey set up a preservist pot.  She would make fruit jam from the plums and wild honey she collected out back.  And as if plum jam wasn't enough of a treat, Zollis, the seed merchant brought strawberry seeds.  Can you believe it, weary traveler, he wanted 5,000 units of trade goods for them, 5,000.  What could we do, we wanted strawberries.

The valley south of the mill and bakery seemed like the best place for strawberries, it was warmer with less wind there.  It was autumn before the land was cleared of iron and stone and an 8'x10' field was prepared and ready to be planted next spring.  We always have something to look forward to here in The Shire.

Chapter 14

Before the end of the year we had a few chestnuts roasting by our fireplaces to snack on as we sat cozy and warm in our hobbit holes reminiscing about treats like these that we had as children.  Very soon it was spring and the strawberries were being planted.

What would fresh strawberries be without cream?  A few milk cows were moved to the meadow near the strawberry field and a few rows of corn were planted.  The cows soon multiplied and we would have cream by the time the strawberries were harvest.  We would also have sunflower seeds to snack on.  Zollis, the seed merchant, arrived with a sack of sunflower seeds in time for a field to be prepared and planted next to the wheat field and strawberries.

Two related hobbit families arrived shortly after planting time. There was a widower with 3 adults children and a couple with an adult daughter and a young son.  Their mother had a very difficult time giving birth to them and now she was unexpectedly expecting again.  They needed to settle and would do so in Middleton.  They traveled to fairs and festivals selling herbal elixirs made from medicinal mushrooms.  And in fact they saw some of these mushrooms across the river, the mist really helps mushrooms grow.  These special mushroom grow very large and have a hard shell.  When hallowed out, the mushroom makes a nice home and the inner mushroom has special medicinal qualities.  No, weary traveler, don't say anything, please.   Anyways, there was also a large tree stump that would serve as a herbalist hut.  The widower and his children were already settled over by the plum orchard.

The summer strawberries were being eaten as soon as they were being harvested, even before the cream was made.  A couple of umbrella tables and chairs were set up nearby.  In late summer and early autumn the sunflowers were breathtakingly beautiful.  Most of the children had sunflower seeds in their pockets to snack on.  We expected more sunflowers to be popping up all around town next year.

In late autumn Middleton had its first snow of the season and its first death.  Neither Eilee or the newborn survived its birth.  Her 8 year old daughter took the loss very hard.  Although we did not get to know her well in the short time since the families arrived, we celebrated Eilee's life at the Green Dragon with a good meal and the bagpipes playing.  We hoped her children would be left with many happy hobbit memories.

Chapter 15

That winter we were all concerned for Eilee's daughter, Ranni.  Understandably, she was unhappy and withdrawn.  We took turns taking meals and treats to the family.  We'd had the first small pecan harvest and I took some of them along with some sun-dried berries over to their mushroom house.  In spring of year 15, the girl's aunt Artka, who lives near the plum orchard,  planted cherry trees but the girl showed no interest.  Nothing seemed to cheer her.

We thought it was time to build houses for some of the other young people.  A hobbit hole was built over by the nut orchards and a young single male moved in.  Another hobbit hole was built by the new cow farmyard and a young couple promptly moved in.  Several young people said they wouldn't mind living in a mushroom house across the river so, Ranni's father hollowed out one of the big mushrooms.  It was my 13 year old son, Harvel, who moved in and became a gatherer working out of the mushroom nearby.  And finally, Ranni showed some interest.  She  showed him how to gatherer rose hips without getting scratched by thorns and how to tell when the onions and roots were ready to pull.  Tavar said he saw the two of them walking over to the new Market Fall Food stand to get roasted chestnuts, he said our boy could do worse.  Love and time does heal, and apparently so do medicinal mushrooms.  Middleton's overall health was finally at 100%.

Chapter 16

Winter seemed a little colder and stormier, and when spring came we were eager to get outside more.  Another big old tree came down along the river.  We had another fishing tree.  Another sitting area was set up along the river with a very pleasant view and a nice breeze.

There were more young people that wanted more freedom and houses of their own.  Middleton's population was now 110, with had 68 adults, 11 students, and 31 young children.  There were  41 families but only 27 homes.  We build 5 new hobbit holes around town that year and planned for a few more.

When the 3rd house was built over by the new sitting area we discovered that not only was the variety of food there not as good but the family by the tunnel was going to the other side to collect wild foods for themselves. I talked to Libert at the time and she only had some potatoes in her pantry. I helped her and the other laborers gather wild foods for her.  Perhaps it was time to start some development in that area.  In the meantime a Market BBQ was built and what better menu choice could be made than fish n chips.  A plateful of fish and an umbrella table by the river made for a nice summer midday break.

Did I tell you, weary traveler, how nice it was to have you here as a visitor.  Let's go look in the pantry and decide what we want for dinner.

Chapter 17

Middleton was still in need of more housing for young people.  Our Harvel in the mushroom house took a bride but it wasn't Renni, she was still at homing taken care of her father and little brother.  Harvel said he did not think anything could make that family happy.  Crist & Rellary's son moved to a place of his own and Crist took over as brewer at the Green Dragon.  Everyone thought the ale was so much better; lesson learned, don't send a boy to do a man's job.  Crist's brother by the south tunnel set up a brewer workplace in front of his house by the bakery to make more ale.  The area through the tunnel had a lot of space available yet for hobbit holes and more farmyards and crop fields, but it was the area to the northwest that we wanted to expand into.

We built a road on the other side of the northwest tunnel and a stockpile; there were trees, stones, and iron that must be cleared.  We planned a small storage barn and a few hobbit holes.  Some of the workers reported seeing some very large game birds, both male and female in the area.  Renni's father said they had seen these birds and tasted the meat at several harvest festivals here in The Shire, they were called turkeys.  He added that they were easy to tame and raise if fed a bit of grain and given a roost.

Well, we did just that.  We built a roost and planted an apple tree and some pumpkins, thinking that like chickens, the turkeys would like to peck at the fallen apples and overripe pumpkins.   We were not mistaken, that plus a little scattered grain and some of the turkeys took up residence in the farmyard and roost.  Zollis, the seed merchant, gave us a sample of Brussels sprout seed so we planted those there too.

When checking the area to see if there were more turkeys, over to the west, the men found a low-lying area with berry bushes growing.  The area probably flooding during spring thaw or heavy summer rain and was ideal for cranberries to grow.  The berries were tart but tasty and ready for the picking.

Our winter solstice celebration meal that year consisted of turkey, diced pumpkin with pecans and wild honey, buttered Brussels sprouts, roasted corn and potatoes, and cranberries.

Chapter 18

The Brussels sprouts were wonderful and kept well.  A whole stem could be stored in the root cellar in fall and the Brussels broke off as needed during the winter.  They tasted fresh picked.

In early spring of year 18, Zollis, the seed merchant, brought cabbage and mushroom seeds.  Rennie's father, Rome, may not be too happy but he was participating more in town affairs.  He told us that mushrooms planted on his side of the river may share some of the qualities of the medicinal mushrooms, so when we had the chance we traded for those seeds.

Through the south tunnel, a small field the size of the sunflower field had already been prepared next to it, so the cabbage was planted promptly.  Land had to be cleared and a field prepared for the mushrooms behind Rome's house.  He got a late start planting them but they came up almost as soon as the seeds were planted.  Rennie took over as herbalist and her little brother was now in school.   Tavar and I were now grandparents, our Harvel and his wife, Alejandrea had their first child, a boy they named Benjamaal.  Of course, they couldn't be happier.

Autumn that year was beautiful, crisp clear sunny days with fallen leaves rustling underfoot.  Cook fires were being re-lit and chestnuts were roasting.  The harvest were well underway and was good except for the late planted mushrooms.  The mushrooms that were harvest before the first frost and snow were definitely a higher quality than those that grew wild.

Chapter 19

Early in year 19, a hobbit hole was built over by the wheat and sunflower fields in the southeast, and another by the turkey roost in the northwest.  Folks there would have liked some grain planted but they thought that corn or wheat would be flattened by the stronger winds on that side of the hill.   They thought the wind and blowing snow were the reason some of the turkeys left the roost during the winter but returned in early spring.  We thought a growing house would be a good solution to protect a crop, and along with a cleaning shed and compost bin could act as a windbreak for the turkeys.  Hay stacked around the farmyard would also help.

We had a few windstorms that summer, nothing too severe but enough to bring down a lot of branches.  We suggested another tunnel going north near the Green Dragon to shorten the walk to gather wood but the folks there did not want a tunnel dug through the mountain.  The wind from the north howled through that canyon and through the nut orchards the way it was.

The grow house was completed before the first snow but instead of growing corn or wheat, the folks choose to grow potatoes.  Well, that's a hobbit for you.  The supplies in the small barn and pantries were plentiful but perhaps the variety could have been better.  A supply store was built on this side of the tunnel and a worker assigned to bring more variety to this side of town.

Chapter 20

In early spring there was a firewood shortage.  There was a lot of stew and hot soup made that winter and the BBQ grilled fish n chips continually.   Branch gathering had been good enough but now we reassigned a woodcutter and built a supply cart to fetch logs.  Folk through the south tunnel claimed those market foods and the sausage shop were all too far a walk away from them in the winter months.  They would like a hot meal with meat produced closer to them.  We had just the right thing in mind for them.

The last time Tavar and I went back home to visit our folks, we detoured to the festival grounds on our way back.  We ate the most delicious meat pies imaginable.  They should not be too hard to make.  A pie oven was built next to the strawberry field, there were already a few tables for folks that gathered for strawberries and cream earlier in the year.  More tables and chairs were set up by the new pie oven so folks could sit and enjoy a delicious meat pie made with beef, mutton, chicken, or venison, whichever was the most plentiful.  There were always lots of potatoes, carrots, onions, and mushrooms.  To insure that the mill through the tunnel would provide enough flour, a new wheat field was prepared next to the pie oven.  It would be very pleasant to sit in the autumn sun enjoying a freshly baked meat pie while listening to the wind in the falling leaves and the smell of sun ripened grain.

Autumn was very short that year.  Our 2nd son, Aleasica, took a bride and moved into the new hobbit hole by the sunflower field.  He had been teaching at the apprentice school but after the move he became a farmer just as an early autumn frost hit the crop fields.  The harvests had only just begun.  The frost was followed by 2 early snowfalls resulting in major crop losses.  Our barns, root cellars, and pantries were all full to overflowing but the crop loss shook our sense of security all the same.

The autumn snowfall did not stop folks from enjoying the hardy meat pies however and Tavar was right there to build covers over the tables and pick up a couple of pies to warm by our fireplace at home.

Chapter 21

Zollis, the seed merchant, arrived with sweet potato seeds before the end of the year.  There was a lot of heavy wet snow in late winter and early spring that brought down a lot of branches.  We thought it best to plant the sweet potatoes in the protected southeast valley and move the hardier cabbage plants to the northwest.  Despite the snow a new crop field was prepared next to the turkey roost.  We decided to plant a field of wheat there too and began building another hobbit hole.  Before the house was finished, 11 hobbits with 3 children arrived from the northwest, one family moved into that hobbit house.

The new families came from the foothills northwest of us and for the 3rd year in a row the spring snow melted too fast and the small streams flooded their farm fields.  By the time the fields were dry enough to plant there was not enough of the growing season left for a full harvest.  Last year's early frost and snow convinced them it was time to go.  They packed up what they could and gathered their goats and headed in this direction.  We invited them to stay with us.

They spotted several groups of wild turkeys on their way here and were impressed we could tame and raise them.  One of the single young men said he would give it a try if we built a roost by his house.  A family of 4 would be nearby with a farmyard for their goat herd.  There would be milk and they would grow wheat, cabbage, potatoes, and cut their own firewood.  A built-in hobbit hole was constructed nearby for another family, but the 2nd single young man wanted his house facing closer to the BBQ, he was impressed with our selection of foods.  The autumn leaves had changed color and had fallen before the final house was built for the last family of 3.

Chapter 22

With the arrival of the new families and the winter newborns Middleton had 57 young children at the beginning of year 22 .  Of those 57 children, many were 6 years old and many more were 5.  Middleton had 17 students and there would soon be more than our apprentice school could handle.  Most of the 6 year olds were in the main part of town and most of the 5 year olds were in the northwest valley.  Only a few of each age group were in the southeast valley, most children there were infants and toddlers.  Each workplace could only teach a few apprentices at a time and still get their work done so we thought it best to teach new school children in a regular classroom until spots in the apprentice workplaces opened up.  We decided to build 2 tiny schoolhouses, one by the mill and bakery for children on the east side of town and through the south tunnel, and a second school in the northwest valley.  New workplaces joined the apprenticeship program, students in the north were now learning composting and grow house growing, and at harvest time students by the south tunnel were learning milling and baking.

Yes, weary traveler, all too soon the children grow up, and all too soon it was again harvest time in Middleton.  The leaves were changing into beautiful autumn colors and falling from the trees, and then there was frost on the pumpkins again and another autumn would soon be at its end.

Chapter 23

Fall and winter came and went and then it was spring.  Again the snow melted quickly, the mist was thick, and wind from the north seemed warmer than it should.  The men decided to investigate to the north before any more land was cleared for crop fields on that side of town.  Perhaps a thick windbreak of evergreen trees would need to be planted first.  The men did not find an open clearing to the north as they expected, what they found was an old tunnel.  It seemed to them that warmer air was coming out of that tunnel.  Of course the old tales of Mordor, the Fire of Mount Doom, and the Mines of Moria began to circulate even though the tunnel was not that old.  Nevertheless, the men posted warning signs by the tunnel and along our northern borders.

Zayde, the general goods merchant, had a more believable explanation than the rekindling of those ancient fires.  It was well known that our rivers were often changing and it was underground hot springs that kept them from freezing here in the north.  Perhaps the underground rivers had changed as well.  Lesser known was the fact that there were crystals farther north in Crystal Canyon that absorb the energy of the sun, perhaps someone was mining for them here and released their warming powers.

Well, those chilling old tales faded away as the summer sun warmed The Shire again and the grains were ripening in the fields and folk were enjoying the first strawberries and cream of the season.   The children were laughing and playing outside and folks gathered around Sam's stew pot again.  From inside the Green Dragon the pipes and flutes could be heard and there was singing and dancing and laughter inside and out.  Middleton had grown in the past 23 years, the population was 161, with 87 adults, 25 students, and 49 young children.  Our wood piles were full and so were our barns, root cellars, and pantries.  Life was good in The Shire.

Sorry to see you go, weary traveler, it was nice you could stay as long as you did.  I hope you enjoyed your stay here in Middleton.  I packed you some meat pies to take along with you.  Enjoy the rest of the summer, weary traveler.  Fare thee well.
