Fast attempt:
pop100 : year 14
pop200 : year 21
pop300 : year 25
pop500 : year 30
I don't know why but my first nomads came only year 29. So that's allmost done without nomads.
And yes it's not nice at all.

I finished my fast game. It´s really fast. Faster than I thought I could build. I´m not so far as you are @RedKetchup; only in year 16. ;) :P It´s quite an extreme game, probably not sustainable and not very beautiful. I´ll show you some screenshots tomorrow.

What ?! you reached 500 in year 16 ?! I'm jalous !   :o :-[ ;D
I can't wait to see your screenshots. Many nomads attractors I guess...

Nilla

Your town looks nicer than mine @hopledor and I can see that we partly use the same strategy for food; dock farming. I mostly have cranberries because the very first merchant brought bean seeds, so I changed my original plans to produce watercress and farm for beans. Rice on the docks gives a lower yield, so I trade mutton and duckmeat for grain (and sometimes some other food) and let my people eat fish.

And yes, I have 3 nomad attractors but I think no schools is more important for the speed. You must reach a population where you get more than 5 nomads fast, before the nomads help to speed things up even more. It took 10 years to reach 100 inhabitants. In that time I got 5 nomads. But if you look at the population graph, you can see that nomads have played a big part in the development in the last few years.

You can also see a lot of driftwood collectors. That means I don´t need to buy any logs. Except for a few houses at the beginning, before I had a lumber mill, I only build these little country houses. I think they are the most economic houses; you need only 48 lumber, no difficult stone. An uneducated worker makes 3 lumber from each log; that means only 16 logs and the heat economy is decent enough.

I don´t know if this town is sustainable. I will run it a bit tonight and see if I can survive the following years. If you look at the production numbers; food and fuel are quite alright. Clothes are not that important, they can do without but tools are the problem. I need to buy tools, there is even a merchant there right now with a big load of excellent carbon tools. The problem is only, I don´t have much to sell, my beer is out, no new malt delivered. It´s winter and the stores of firewood are not overfull. I´m about to reload goods from the other ports to be able to buy at least some. Maybe I will let him stay until summer when I can produce a surplus of firewood.

Can someone make 500 inhabitants faster? Yes of course. If I would make one more attempt, I would do pretty much the same with one exception; I would use more boarding houses: as many as I can afford to build. I thought about to build some in this town but for some reason, I don´t like boarding houses, so I choose not to.

hopledor

Nicely done.

You're obviously right, the fast early growing of the population seems to be the key and nomads help a lot.
I tryed a few things with a saved game at year 10 of my last attempt and reached 500 during year 22 but I should have worked on the earlier developpement that was not good enough.

RedKetchup

i am sorry but i know i never intended to win the fastest race to 500 lol. i will never do a game without school lol hehe
but i will maybe win the prttiest town one ? hehe ai aim for that :)

i will continue to play tonight, trying to reach this 500. then i will make a blog with the screenshots i took all along the game... and talk about those....

I have only ever played the vanilla version of this game. But, since we have until the 23rd of April, I think I might try to figure out the mods world with this challenge.  I am tempted...  Let's see if I can squeeze this in.  April is a busy month for me.

Thanks for throwing the challenge out there @Nilla !

Just a small report from my Woolstein. It has survived! I had some beer and a little firewood in the other trading ports and I also realized that I wouldn´t build so many more houses so I could sell most of the lumber and buy a load of good tools. Now when I don´t need to grow so fast, I´ve built some schools. It looks like the first graduated all work in the wood industry. The place is flooded by logs and firewood. We are still short on clothing but that will not kill the town. As soon as there are some educated tailors things will work out.

I know, I didn´t say anything about that the town needs to survive a certain number of years after it has reached 500 but I find it´s a bonus if it does.

hopledor

I was pretty confident you will be able to keep your city alive longer :)
Good job though !

Now I'm making a new fast attempt. So no school and nomads attractors.
I've reached the end of year 10 and I have 100 citizens. But this was not easy at all to achieve.
Not because of any problem with ressources or food. Just because it seems the only thing that matter is luck regarding the number of births and the even balance of boys and girls.
About the even balance you can save the game often and reload if it's going wrong. I don't really enjoy it but i did it a few times to keep the same numbers of men and women.
About the number of births I have no clue if there is any parameter that matters.
So I think @Nilla your 100 citizens in year 10 are impressive with only 5 nomads (I had 4+7). Is this just luck with these births or are you hiding something from us ? :)
Or maybe there is something basic I don't know about :-\

About what to build I believe there are many possibilties. I'm going for colorfull little houses even if they are a bit expensives compared to country little houses, but you need less space for them and I like this. I don't intend to trade. I hope i can keep making steel tools with charcoal. And I think I can afford to grow rice even if the numbers are lower than cranberry and watercress.

Had some tryes myself. It seems i cant beat 19 year. You to good Nilla ;)  Dont think im gone try fast 500 anymore  :P  I tryed city hall on the water, but no nomads come. Had like 300 on year 19,
EDIT: its year 16 for you. Omg its even better

Nilla

I know, @hopledor, this balance boys/girl has a big impact but I´m too lazy to save and reload just to get a balance. I first had many boys than many girls but it wasn´t all too bad in that game. But it makes a big difference if you do reload. Quite a long time ago, we had the "100-challenge" here on this headline. There was some experimenting and if you read the threads, you can see that @Brugle who was fastest in two of the categories did this save reload; very successfully.

My main "trick" (obvious not really a trick) is to have a house for every 10 years old girl. If there are numerous single girls I only let one or two of them move out to live alone and wait for boys to be old enough. The start is important. If you read that 100-challenge you can see that I made some experiments with different starts; few and many children. So at the very beginning, I first build a house, let a couple move in, after a short time I fake demolish it and let another couple move in. I make this several times until everyone has lived in that house. This way I have the same effect as I would have if I build a boarding house first; every family gets a baby soon. I can´t think of any other tricks but I think I was lucky with the nomads, after the first very small "batch" I had 4 quite large groups.

I hope I haven´t discouraged you to try @lasjoss. I know it´s not easy to beat 16 years but I also know that it´s possible. I first had the same issue with the city hall on the water, then I asked @RedKetchup and he said it also needs a dock market place. The stone dock city hall and the lighthouse, however, need nothing more, so I upgraded that wooden city hall to stone and started to get nomads.

hopledor

Thanks @Nilla I'm going to read this thread.

I reached 500 citizens late spring 17.
Nomads didn't came soon enough and previous nomads were not many. I'm not sure when the attractors trigger. It seems related to the date you build it. Maybe not. Also the % from the townhouse seems to be lower than the lighthouse's one.

Nilla

See, @hopledor you are pretty close. With a bit more luck by the time nomads arrive, you would have been faster than I was. I think the time and number (% of the population) of nomads are random inside a range set by the modder. I don´t know if @RedKetchup has made it different at the different townhalls.

Regular townhall : The regular trading post
wood dock towanhall : The wood dock market
stone dock townhall : nothing
Lighthouse : nothing.

Ahh. That eplain alot with the Nomads. Yes u need a some luck with the nomads. I have also problems keeping up with food and the mats with so fast population. I tryed without trader, and i think that is impossible?
