Title: Discussion: Ghost House
Post by: kid1293 on January 08, 2017, 04:27:45 AM
Think big ???

I hope this is big enough, even if I prefer small places.

We have had this under our noses all the time. Why hasn't someone thought of it?

I have ghosted the upper floors.
Pro - As high as you want.
Con - Once you start building you must gather all build material for that floor
before you can pause it.  There is no footprint to click on.

Cosmetic - All access is at ground level,

Let's talk! It can be done but is it needed?

Here is another quirk with these buildings.

Not needed for me even though I do like 2 and 3 story houses, colorful, Mexican, stacked.  I really like building where house can be built above, like old bakery, old tailor, old blacksmith.  Multiple levels good for small and mountain maps but too many or too high would look out of place or overpowering I think, but then again I don't strive for high populations.  Will be interesting to hear what other more experienced builders think.

I think that it is a useful discovery, it opens up the possibility for modders to make houses with upper floors that can overhang the ground floor and even to make the upper floor extend out like a balcony. You could even have a 2nd upper floor overhang the 1st upper floor like in the picture below.
Perhaps it even allows the upper floor to extend from the parent house and extend to join another house so that there is a tunnel between the two ground floor houses (formed by the upper floor house)?

It's basically Lego pieces, completely free to place.
One thing I discovered was that the accesspoint
follows the house when you turn or move.
That means you could end up going through walls
to get to your 'door'. Does not look good.
I must admit that the old footprints with road access
are the best. One way to have it higher is to build, say -
6 tiles wide with one row of tiles for each floor. It forces
some restrictions on building but the game probably looks
better.

This was just an idea that popped up.
In reality I agree with @Abandoned that this game is NOT
a futuristic megacity.

@TheOtherMicheal - Overhangs are easily made with standard
modelling and coding but the model is often fixed in position,
so there is a trade off with either method.

edit- those houses in your picture would be fun to model. :)

this technique would be good with the Brick Tenements and Rowhouses mod..

Naturally! Even if we don't know for what (yet), sooner or later the spark will start a fire...

Off the bat I would think that with this you might be able to make a tree house (put a tiny shack at groundlevel as "access point" and storage)... even if people could not really "walk" up there, it would be charming  :)

Or a terraced house that can have the upper levels high up on a mountainside...

Clever idea. It does open up some interesting possibilities.

you can do a tree house with a ladder and then add ghost trees to it.built a post, using this for the ladder, and put the house with a access hole on top of the post. then when you add your ghost tree you have a center to place the tree against or on. i place  kidds roses this way. place 1, turn the bush f variant to the same color, and place the next overlapping the 1st. makes for bigger bushes this way also. i tried it with CC birch trees as well to see if they would branch out more.
technically, since we know they can ghost and make ducks, you don't need much of a footprint. you can make floating houses in the clouds. and nooo this was not a request of any kind. you could build adoorway and place it against a mountain and have houses with 3 families and 20 kids too, lol.the ghost idea takes away the limits.

@kid1293 & @Paeng
Paeng is right where I was thinking, this would be a perfect foundation for my treehouse idea :)  Taking @slink 3 tier, to a new direction in a way.

I'm keeping my eyes out for a 3-4 tier treehouse & possibly system, for my Forester camps.   (*cough, please in 2x2 size as well for tight spaces *cough)
Think the tree village in Star Wars :D

Secondly, fabulous idea for mining villages, if it truly ghostable, then you can build mountain homes, build upwards along the face of the mountains, adding a texture to make 'the look'.

Fishing villages, same sort of thing, building the houses over the top of the existing fishing dock.

Tonnes of application ideas, just need the texturing to go with it.  :D

I love the concept though !!!

@QueryEverything and @brads3 - I love your ideas of a tree house.

Since I learned how to make trees I have not had any use for them
other than decoration. Now this! I can not promise anything
(I am having a break from modding right now) but I will think of
tree houses. Should not be impossible.

@kid1293 you're the artist that gave the inspiration in the first place :)
You're work is truly excellent, and I love all of your mods.

Enjoy your break, it's well deserved :D

@kid1293 , @Paeng , @brads3 , I like your tree house ideas, I too thought of tree houses that would go with @RedKetchup druid pieces but as of yet those pieces are tied up in mega mod and not a separate mod yet.  We are sadly lacking housing for elves and hobbits.

Just two quick questions.

Shall I use the same textures as in Forest mod?

If so, do I include the tree house in Forest mod?

Is that the Forest Outpost? If so - well, we have plenty of that thatch with the houses... I wouldn't mind a new texture... but hey, either way...  :)

Quotedo I include the tree house in Forest mod?

Why not, it will still be a forest item...?
Title: Re: Discussion: Ghost House

Added to Forest Outpost with same texture would be fine (as long as forester doesn't cut tree house down :D ), new texture would be okay too.  Maybe deco sign saying Do Not Cut, Save the Trees or an upper level deco rope bridge connecting 2 tree houses, ladder idea a good one.

That is one pretty cool looking tree house, I'd like one of those myself, room with a view for lots of squirrels too.

I agree, I want a treehouse like that, but...

I decided to go on a different approach with three trees
and some beams to get a bottom. Now I have a solid
foundation for a house. It will not be big. There's a lot
of branches everywhere so I must avoid making a porcupine.
I haven't started yet but I have tested with three trees and
it works. :)

The reason I asked about Forest Outpost mod was something
someone said about wanting a treehouse in the forest.
To me it is perfectly OK making a stand-alone mod with new textures.

It will not be ghosted. Small footprint 4x4 with branches hanging out.
The house will be 3x3 tiles and if you opt for a 2-level house I can try.

Sounds perfect and what I had hoped for.  The 4x4 fits with the theme of the Foresters Outpost, they are all compact, but mighty!!!  It's my fave go to start buildings :D

Looking forward to seeing how your ideas flesh out, :)

@kid1293 , @QueryEverything and I will both be looking forward to the treehouse.  It will certainly go with the Forest Outpost theme but stand-alone might be better if you are thinking of other pieces to go with it.  Forest Outpost set could use an addition of a slightly bigger matching house for a larger family.

Yeah, same here... it's so... elegant - doesn't look "alien" in the tree at all   :)

Help with code, anyone? edit - SOLVED

Is there a limit how steep citizens will climb a floor?
I made a floor, same angle as the ladder. Didn't work.
I tried to make very small 'steps' all the way up. Didn't work.
Noone uses the ladder. They go to a point under the house.

edit - Just a number error. I asked them to climb 90 meters up.  :o :-[ ;D

A tree house is better than a ghost house.

:)Well, that is one very nice looking tree house.  Like the ladder.  Do the trees change with the seasons?

Yes they change with season.

I took some trees from my Deco Plants.
Next time I will try with a new model. I have ideas. :)

I sure do like that one, I can see it now in the forest with your decorative shrubs blooming around it.  It will sure make a nice looking little village.  Thanks @kid1293
