Title: Kid - Forest Ponds V1.0
Post by: kid1293 on February 16, 2018, 03:39:05 AM
Kid - Forest Ponds V1.0

https://worldofbanished.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=411

Change of name! I started over completely without an extra coloring layer.
I also provide an f-key variant of each pond without a stone border.

Sorry for all this testing and downloading. It was a try to add
some extra to Bartender's water material. It does not work for all.

7x8 Forest Pond.
7x6 (+6 ghosted) Forest Pond with waterfall.

For 2 fishermen.
They cost only 5 work to build.
You find a place in the forest. You clear the area and it is yours.

I like this. Any way to make it without the edging, or invisible edging, so it looks natural?

And maybe do away with the need for 8 stone to build but increase the build time.

No need for stone just to dig a hole.  ;D Course then they have to fill it with water, unless the water table is shallow.  ::)

@twilightbreeze - Sorry about the edge.
The edge is there to conceal a seam in the texture. Vanilla grass -> Pond grass.
I can never cover all possibilities that exists on a map. Light/dark grass.
Yellow grass. Rock or mud.
There will always be a seam and it looks as bad as my stone edge.

To clarify, check picture!

And yes, the stone requirement is for the stone edge but I will remove it
when I update!.

Ah, I see. No prob, I know it's hard to compensate for limited game options, lol. I mod for the Sims 2 so I understand. Just a thought.

But the dismissal of the stone requirement would be cool tho!! Great idea, this. Nice looking too.

I see what you mean. I agree - you need to do something to cover up that edge. Can you use gravel or something instead of grass?

not sure if i am helping but can the entire pond be dropped down slightly?thwat way the edge is under the normal traain to blend it in better.
even a .1 drop would change the way it from laying over the normal map to beig just below it.
Title: Re: Kid - Forest Pond V1.0
Post by: kid1293 on February 16, 2018, 01:29:28 PM
@brads3 - I can not just lower the model like you said.

Every hole I dig has a one tile 'border' which has NO snow in winter!
The hole itself does not have any snow either. Limits to the game?
I have to cover that up. I have made my model as small as possible but
I have to keep the bottom and the border. I have minimized as much
as possible.

The dirt around buildings fades from brown to nothing. Is it possible to do something like that, using your grass texture instead of a dirt texture?
Title: Re: Kid - Forest Pond V1.0
Post by: brads3 on February 16, 2018, 02:35:38 PM
o'k,based on some quick tests that grass texture seems to be clowse to the "new grassy road" mod texture.we can use that mod to blend in your grass and if needed your decorative plants or EB's canal decorations. can you square the edge and remove the stone? players have many options,we can decorate. :D
Title: Re: Kid - Forest Pond V1.0
Post by: kid1293 on February 16, 2018, 02:46:42 PM
All right.
I need a 'cover' to cover the hole.
I can not fade the edges of that texture, I have to make a second texture
used as decal to fade the edge. I am positively sure I can not do that in a nice way.
There will be visible seams.

I don't like visible seams.  :(
Title: Re: Kid - Forest Pond V1.0
Post by: twilightbreeze on February 16, 2018, 03:17:18 PM
I personally do not mind the stones as edging. I only asked if it was possible to have both. Since it is not, I like it the way it is. You could change the flat bricks for different sizes of rocks, but either way, I think it looks fine as is.

:)  I thought of irregular stones as edge but had to say no.
There are so many surfaces that it will go up to the roof
of the computer with a lot of stones.

It is simply not always the right thing to do even if it will look better!

Thank you, Nice surprise. I've always dreamed to add frogs and crayfish to such a wonderful mod because there is nowhere this is but in large mods or only Tom has crayfish in The North, if it is possible adding to this mods would be delighted - I do not know have to have codes? maybe from my side this is a stupid idea? but would it be fun - a small mod containing three things? What do you think about it? Please, Cheers!

A meditation pond or nature pond would be a nice addition to your happiness mod. A place for bannies to gain spirit happiness, for those players who don't like churches.  :)

That is another possible solution.
But the problem is still there. How to blend it nicely with the ground.
I would have to make a gravel footprint (which I can fade) and place
under my model.

A gravel patch in the woods does not have to look out of place but I
prefer grass.
Title: Re: Kid - Forest Pond V1.0

I don't think the seam is a big deal.... nothing a few decorative plants, flowers, reeds, and grasses can't camouflage.

Kid's plants, EB's grasses flowers and rocks, CC's lovely ground coverings... all ghosted so they can easily be placed all throughout the pond area to "hide" the seam.  The grasses and low ground coverings will blend the seam into the surrounding area without being too noticable.

It kind of makes sense to have lots of plants growing around a pond anyways, since plants do flourish around watery areas.

I now have a gazillion ideas in my head on how to decorate around it nicely with benches, statues, bushes, and all kinds of cool ghosted goodies that we already have with all the other mods !

I like it just the way it is kid... it gives us the option to fix it up however we want.

;D
Title: Re: Kid - Forest Pond V1.0
Post by: ancientmuse on February 17, 2018, 12:54:45 AM
So I decided to load this forest pond mod and do a quick decorative touch to see if I could hide the grass seam/rock border and blend it in with the surrounding environment.

It would definitely be easier to just blend in the grass seam without the rock border though... so maybe just an option to build either with or without the rock border ?

Also, the water doesn't seem to be filling the pond... I'm not sure if it's just my graphics card (I had a problem with the pink water canal thing too), or if anyone else has the same super low water level with this pond too ?

Otherwise, it works and looks great with all the plants, benches, gazebo, etc.

I think it turned out looking pretty darned nice !

Title: Re: Kid - Forest Pond V1.0

I had that clear water too. I thought I had fixed it.
It should look like picture on top of page one in this thread.
Now it works on my setup.

Nice little garden @ancientmuse ! I think I better leave decoration to you people.

I will consider releasing a no-stone-border version.
There are many voices for such an option.
I am working on a second pond with a little extra.
I may release two versions of that too.

:) I don't know why you don't like those stones. I think they are nice.  ;)
Title: Re: Kid - Forest Pond V1.0

I'm not sure why the water isn't working for your pond...

I built Red's fish pond and the water is fine with his ?  But yours for some reason doesn't fill up with water ?

Weird.

Otherwise, it works great.

And to be honest, I have no problem with the stone border, but it would be nice to have a no stone option for anyone who doesn't want to plant a gazillion plants around the border like I did.  LOL

;)

I can tell that there is water in your pond too but it is completely transparent.
I made a tweak to have half-transparent water to be able to see bottom.
It works on my machine. I want to know if more people have problems with
this completely see-through water?

RK' pond is having an opaque surface with no bottom that is why you can see his water.
I have no idea whatsoever if different graphics card treat transparent textures differently.
I will try to read up on the problem with pink water and see if this is related.

Title: Re: Kid - Forest Pond V1.0
Post by: kid1293 on February 17, 2018, 05:05:15 AM
I have read the thread about pink water and I think there another issue here.

@RedKetchup - I used @Bartender 's Glass Material under Water Material.
The glass texture is basically some small waves to make surface.
It does not work with Glass above Water. It get's transparent okay, but no Water moving.
It does not work when Glass under is too close to Water.

I use Waterlevel just below pond edge. Then Glasslevel at least 0.08 m further down.
see picture.
You get a surface (moving) and can still see bottom.

This is what your pond looks like on my machine.
The first picture shows it near a demolished pit mine from @RedKetchup's Editor Choice mod. I don't think it's supposed to look like that either.
The second and third shots are closeups. The fourth shot is my graphics settings.
Title: Re: Kid - Forest Pond V1.0
Post by: kid1293 on February 17, 2018, 05:59:23 AM
I used your settings @Hawk and nothing changed.
I get surface just as my last picture.

So it is not video card related...
I run on Win10 latest update.

I hate to do this but I have to take transparency away.
To many questions and I can't get heads or tails of Bartender's code.

Here is a new file WITHOUT transparency on pond surface
Please test and tell me.

edit - moved non-transparency version to first post in this thread.

Yeah, that looks a bit better now on the pond. But what about the Fish Farm? (see prev. post with pic in this thread, pg 1)

Still has the same issue.
Title: Re: Kid - Forest Pond V1.0
Post by: kid1293 on February 17, 2018, 06:38:59 AM
Hmm, I can see that too. Not sure how to solve it. It works fine with vanilla grass. (my reference)
I could make a sand slope and try to blend it with surroundings...  :-\

Yea, Fish Farm. Will also have no transparency.
I will prioritize that and continue with ponds later.
Title: Re: Kid - Forest Pond V1.0
Post by: Hawk on February 17, 2018, 06:45:32 AM
I'm not sure how this would work in Banished but can you make a pond texture with an alpha channel border that gradually fades into full transparency, starting with gravel or dirt or something similar?
I don't know how transparencies work with Banished but from the issue with the pond water, maybe that's not an option.
Title: Re: Kid - Forest Pond V1.0
Post by: kid1293 on February 17, 2018, 07:05:40 AM
I don't know how luke coded it but there seems to be no option
to gradually fade out a texture. It is either off or on.
I have tried before without success.

All I can do is add another layer as footprint (which is blank now)
There I can fade the edge.
First I have to shrink model edge to make room for footprint.
Then I have to decide what texture to use for edge and footprint - grass/sand/gravel.
Don't talk about matching them up without creating new seams!

:)

@brads3 - I think it can have to do with updating drivers or such.
I am more or less forced to do this.

Scenario - Some do not want stone edge -> 2 versions
Some can not see transparent water -> 4 versions
Some want salmon -> 8 versions.

I was talking about doing it in the texture itself instead of within game. Do the alpha channel in the texture, then save that as a png or tga with an alpha. I don't know if an image format like that will work in Banished though.

Thanks RK, I maybe do that later.
I have a working mod on my machine. I like it and want to develop it more.
If people don't like something about it - I can not change it to another mod!
I know I am onto something with the transparency and I would like to hear
@Bartender 's view of things. There is, as he stated, some problem with
reflections on certain angles. Maybe there IS a solution to displaying this
on older machines.

The water problem should be fixable. Other mods have water that works. Discrepancy's water pump and EB's water well and irrigation ditches, and of course Red's canals.

I don't know if you mean visible salmon if you mean the pond makes salmon.

For everything visible - stone edge and visible fish and water plants, rocks, fences etc - these could all be ghost decorations. Then all you need is one basic version and everything else could be a ghost decoration. Even the tree could be a ghost deco. Then everyone should be happy.  :)

Salmon was a joke (sort of, but people have strange desires)
Water in pond stays. I changed Fish Farm. That's enough for now.
(of course I hope for a solution!!!)
Decoration? I won't do any.
Stones? Hide them with flowers. Can be done.
Grass/sand/gravel? I sat over a day to match that grass to most of the map. It stays!

If it is a problem mod - Don't use it.

After all I am a happy guy but I have a hard time saying 'no'.... :)

KID,i thought you did a good job with it. i only offered ideas cause you didn't sound happy with those edges. sometimes as you modders do something different you do find new ideas. sorry you got frustrated, was hoping you foud something new along the way.
does the game read these ponds as water? so say the pond was bigger could it be used and players could add some of the other modded dock pieces to it? like the CC reed farm, rice paddys,or duck hunting blinds? or NECORA's fishing piers and maritimes additions for the clams or mollusks?
Title: Re: Kid - Forest Pond V1.0

No @brads3 , it is a model not the map.
If you want other water buildings they have to be placed by the modder.
I am not sure I will release code since it created such confusion.

(but yes, I want a rice field some time) :)

All I say about code - Under water material, a surface texture with glass material applied.

It's so crazy how Luke's game has made all this water stuff so ridiculously complicated.

You had a wonderful idea with this forest pond and fish farm thing, @kid1293.... it's too bad that it's turned out to be such a headache trying to get the stupid water to work properly.

@ Kid 1293 :D Thank you. Great mods "Fish Farm" and "Forest Pond". In my opinion, it's OK. I have a photo - you can even see the "Medieval pond" - Red - but each mod is different and that's why it's great - water is water - I do not look at it, the most important is that it is moves . I support @ brad 3 when it comes to adding something other than fish - maybe growing rice or mollusk farming? I also mentioned adding crayfish, shrimp, etc. - the idea is great, but it depends only on You, will You add something? - Please. Regards :D

@twilightbreeze - This is another sign that your graphics card does not hold up.
Did you try the non-transparent version? (first post in this thread)

@RedKetchup - No, it is just a picture with water material (river) in front.
It looks rather good in game and you get the feeling it is falling slowly.

This IS the non-transparent version.

I have no solution to that @twilightbreeze .
It is good on most machines and some are good with non-transparent versions.

Okay!! While writing this message I think I want to test a thing.
Here are both ponds without underlaying layer.
I test this on you, Twilight and if it turns out good I will release it.
No good having several versions and I am ready to admit that placing a
glass layer under water was an experiment (looked good on my computer)

I don't think it is save compatible since I removed a texture.
When I do that mods tends to crash when loading in save-game.
You may have to delete old ponds first and save, then update.

Ok, I will test it for you. It may be as you say, that my graphics are not really good. I have the updated drivers but my laptop is a couple years old.

I'll let you know in a little bit. I just wish people would stop getting angry or snarky with me for merely posting that there may or may not be glitches. Happening more often lately. I'm just trying to help.  :(

EDIT: Ok, I tried it and now the Waterfall Pond is there, and clear, looks good.....but the Regular Pond is empty, no water there. See pic. Just reporting, ok?

Don't disturb the duck pond!  :D :D

Some are sensitive, me too sometimes...

Okay, you seem awake and alert. Test this one. I hope it is the last.
I changed water from 'lake' to 'river' in first pond. I means it will be moving a bit
but you get a visible surface.

Ok, now they both work perfectly! Thank you!!

Then I can have those as the 'non-transparent' version?

Anyone object? No, I didn't think so. :)  Will fix it later.

Now I have to go shopping. Will check in later.

For my test I used the original transparency version. The water in the waterfall worked ok, the water in the pond not. Will wait for updated release.

Okay @Gatherer . I have uploaded updated version in first post.
You have to test and come back.

Just a note - There was a water surface in that pond but it was made
from 'lake material' so it was very calm and almost invisible.
I have changed it to 'river material' and will get more motion on the surface.

it looks very very great !!!

but i have a question: From the look of it.... i would have rather asked to place them only next to a mountain... do they have that ability ?

Yes indeed! The back side is ghosted to place into a mountain.
Only the pond has footprint to flatten ground.

If people want a small mountain on the plains...  okay  ::)

Is there a elevation tool? Like the flatten tool, only to make small hills and mountains?
Title: Re: Kid - Forest Pond V1.1

I didn't mean to make a mountain :)

Just if you want to place waterfall in the desert it is okay.

@twilightbreeze  try the terraform mod. it gives you more options than the CC version.it takes some getting used to as it can be tricky. to use the ground after you add a hill, you must run delet building tool acrossed it. excuse my pink water, that happened after i upgrade from pond to the waterfall. the mod will place at 0 level but not lower. you can add close and cover the stones too.

@brads3 - need advice.

I can fix pink water but I am tired of this manipulating the surface water.
Do you and other people out there accept one version without my
experiments? I have run into more problems with an extra layer.
The water differs between lake and river. If you don't understand, I can say
I get a dark waterfall and a bright pond. If I make one version only I can
have same water in both.

I am so tired. It is days now.

@kid1293

I would like to see an f-variant option without stones all around. Other than that it is perfect. No need to experiment further with this mod imo.
Title: Re: Kid - Forest Pond V1.1
Post by: kid1293 on February 22, 2018, 03:20:29 PM
Then I have to make f-key variant to both with/without extra layer?
Title: Re: Kid - Forest Pond V1.1
Post by: Gatherer on February 22, 2018, 03:23:00 PM
What I mean is to keep this fixed version without the extra layer and just add no stone border variant.

Okay, and add fix for pink water. Now we're getting somewhere. :)

It's over midnight here and I can not solve these problems.

Extra layer is nice. Better than opaque water-texture. But...
Now I aim for transparent water without extra coloring.
I got all. Just have to put it together. Tomorrow  ;)

i am flexible. whatever works best for you. i didn't notice pink water before with RED's canals or the pond mod itself. when i downloaded to get the waterfall is when i got the pink. i did download the other link on the 1st page but haven't tested it yet. the pink is vague to it  is more noticable when i was turing the map around to show the terraform for Twilight.

I just wish all people were flexible. I, myself, had a hard time giving up
that extra layer. It looked so promising! But I gave up...

NEW VERSION with NEW NAME and F-KEY VARIANT in download!
(and, I hope, with a fix for pink water. I can't test.)

This is as it will be. In the future there may be more,
but for now I have reached a sort of peace of mind.
I am sorry for all this mess I have created. It was worth a try.

Just delete all old versions. I will not continue with them.

:)

Wow, the waterfall looks amazing in game.

I decorated it with lots of trees and plants (even around the mountain sides.

With the water movement, it actually looks like the water is falling for real !

Pond, waterfall, and fish farm all work fine on my machine now... I guess it was that extra layer thing ?

Anyways, very beautiful addition for our towns !

*happy dance*

Hehe....

Before when I would build my towns, I'd flatten out a huge area for building on.  But now I have a great excuse to leave one little mountain close by so I can have a nice little forest park retreat for my bannies when they get stressed out.

;D

Hey, sorry I'm late for the fun...  :(

Just had a little play with the waterfall - what a fantastic addon, really a joy!
