Title: Does anyone want a new challenge?
Post by: Nilla on March 24, 2019, 04:02:15 AM
QuoteHello guys as a new member here I must say I'm amazed with all the info this page has, I'm really curious about the challenges too, pleased to meet you all  ;D

This was written by a new member named @Aior the other day. I realized that these challenges we once had here on WOB have been sleeping tight the last years. So I thought; what about a new challenge? Something fun and challenging but for everyone. Here I have a suggestion.

We have a prominent member here on WOB called @RedKetchup without him this game and this webpage wouldn´t have been the same. I want this challenge to be a homage to him.

This is my quest:

Build a settlement with 500 inhabitants use only the latest version of RK Editor Choice. The settlement will be "judged" by 3 different aspects:
A. Speed. Reach 500 inhabitants as fast as you can
B. Prosperity. Make a rich settlement with a large surplus of everything, full happiness and health, a great diversity of high-quality food, best clothing, best tools, as much luxury as possible
C. Beauty.

I like very much to see how other people are building in Banished. We all have our different ways. I think it will make the most fun to see how different persons use the same map and settings in different ways.  That´s the reason that I will add this:

Use the following settings (see also picture)
Map seed; 798597095
Terrain type; valleys, texture your own choice
Terrain size; medium
Climate; fair
Disasters; on or off (what you like the most)
Starting conditions; Shepherds

Chose one (or all) of the aspects above. Make some screenshots along the way to show the development and show us the result here on this thread in 4 weeks; before 23 April.

Does anyone want to play along?

I guess we now know why the challenges have been sleeping. No reactions on this attempt to make one.

Do you folks principally don´t like challenges?
Is this kind of challenge, not the right; too hard, too easy, too boring to play with only one mod?

In any case; I have started a game with these settings. Category A; fast. Maybe I´m the only one but at least I´ll challenge myself.

who knows, maybe myself i will participate....

I think I will participate in this challenge.  I'm not sure when I will get the chance and be totally up for it.

Do you mean this to be 3 different challenges?  Are you just doing "Fast" in your current town and doing the others in different towns?  Do you intend one town to do all 3?

As I first wrote this, I thought of 3 different challenges. Not everyone need to take part in all 3 of them. The reason was that I wanted this to be a challenge for everyone. I like the survival aspects of Banished; the fast version is "my game"; uneducated, organize a lot of building materials to build houses for every 10 years old girl, taking every nomad and don´t forget to have enough of food, fuel and tools. Since I know, that this is a kind of game many people don´t like, I added the other categories.

Personally, I don´t think I can manage all 3 categories in one town; at least not successfully. In my present game where I go for speed, I only build the cheapest houses and jam them close together to achieve some kind of efficiency by my silly uneducated people (in fact I can´t even manage to get as much building material as I want this way). A really prosperous town would show its wealth with large expensive houses, cathedrals, theatres, broad streets, fancy bridges..... RKEd gives you a lot of tools for this. I can´t manage that in this town. And what is beauty? Every town is beautiful in some way. I added that category because I see so many screenshots from really beautiful towns. They would probably not have grown fast and aren´t necessarily very prosperous. I simply added that category to suit players who want to focus only on the look.

Of course, a talented player could get a fast growing town beautiful and it can also achieve some kind of prosperity, but if I would go for the category "prosperity", I would start a new town. I don´t know yet if I will but maybe. Beauty is not so my game. I use to get bored fast when I try to design and use decorations.

So everyone is free to show us one or more towns. Each town can take part in 1, 2 or 3 of the challenges. It´s up to you!

but you said terrain is our choice.... but with same seed we can have totally diffrent map if we choose lake or valley or mountains or plains.
the texture itself should not play unless the lines of code is different in one of those files

edit: for sure i wouldnt won the fastest 500 because i always always try to get education before the first 10y old boy/girl

Thank you @RedKetchup! of course, you´re right. I´ll change it to valleys; texture your own choice.

Edit; normally the first thing I build too is a school but if you want to grow fast you´ll need to suffer with the uneducated.

I´m so sorry about the map but actually, this one looks very similar to the map I´m using. Of course, I have a few small mountains and hills, that makes it a little bit harder. And I also don´t know how many children you had in the first place. I like your town (totally different from how I build) and I´m pleased that at least someone likes this challenge but sorry, I don´t think 39 years is fast. I haven´t come very far yet but my guess (and my goal) is to get there in about half of that time. I don´t know if I can do it. I do meet some trouble along the way. The main difference that I think I can do it faster is that I will have 0% education. That speeds things up a lot but also gives you trouble.

How many children when i started? 39 years is not hard to beat i think. Had some starvation problems, and that is really bad.. But its my first try and atleast u have someting u can beat ;)
Title: Re: Does anyone want a new challenge?
Post by: Nilla on March 28, 2019, 07:55:49 AM
In my game, there were only 3 children to start with. More and older children are good if you want to grow fast. But not so good with starvation.  :-\

Hi!

I gave it a try and will probably do it again because i'm not really happy with what i did.
I had no idea if i was going to do it fast, rich or beautifull so I just built according to my mood :)
500 pop was reachead after 43 years with a stupid mistake that cost me 5 or 6 years at least (not building an hospital, loosing 1/4 of the population because of a desease)
Anyway it was fun and I'll keep in mind a few ideas for the next attempt.

Thanks @Nilla for the challenge and of course many thanks @RedKetchup for this mod!

thanks you for the reminding ^^ build an hospital asap  ;D  ;D

Very nice details @hopledor. :) There´s a good atmosphere in your screenshots. A good idea to make different houses in the same colour. I´m looking forward to seeing your next attempt!

I finished my fast game. It´s really fast. Faster than I thought I could build. I´m not so far as you are @RedKetchup; only in year 16. ;) :P It´s quite an extreme game, probably not sustainable and not very beautiful. I´ll show you some screenshots tomorrow.
Title: Re: Does anyone want a new challenge?
Post by: hopledor on March 28, 2019, 05:36:06 PM
Fast attempt:
pop100 : year 14
pop200 : year 21
pop300 : year 25
pop500 : year 30
I don't know why but my first nomads came only year 29. So that's allmost done without nomads.
And yes it's not nice at all.

What ?! you reached 500 in year 16 ?! I'm jalous !   :o :-[ ;D
I can't wait to see your screenshots. Many nomads attractors I guess...

Your town looks nicer than mine @hopledor and I can see that we partly use the same strategy for food; dock farming. I mostly have cranberries because the very first merchant brought bean seeds, so I changed my original plans to produce watercress and farm for beans. Rice on the docks gives a lower yield, so I trade mutton and duckmeat for grain (and sometimes some other food) and let my people eat fish.

And yes, I have 3 nomad attractors but I think no schools is more important for the speed. You must reach a population where you get more than 5 nomads fast, before the nomads help to speed things up even more. It took 10 years to reach 100 inhabitants. In that time I got 5 nomads. But if you look at the population graph, you can see that nomads have played a big part in the development in the last few years.

You can also see a lot of driftwood collectors. That means I don´t need to buy any logs. Except for a few houses at the beginning, before I had a lumber mill, I only build these little country houses. I think they are the most economic houses; you need only 48 lumber, no difficult stone. An uneducated worker makes 3 lumber from each log; that means only 16 logs and the heat economy is decent enough.

I don´t know if this town is sustainable. I will run it a bit tonight and see if I can survive the following years. If you look at the production numbers; food and fuel are quite alright. Clothes are not that important, they can do without but tools are the problem. I need to buy tools, there is even a merchant there right now with a big load of excellent carbon tools. The problem is only, I don´t have much to sell, my beer is out, no new malt delivered. It´s winter and the stores of firewood are not overfull. I´m about to reload goods from the other ports to be able to buy at least some. Maybe I will let him stay until summer when I can produce a surplus of firewood.

Can someone make 500 inhabitants faster? Yes of course. If I would make one more attempt, I would do pretty much the same with one exception; I would use more boarding houses: as many as I can afford to build. I thought about to build some in this town but for some reason, I don´t like boarding houses, so I choose not to.

Nicely done.

You're obviously right, the fast early growing of the population seems to be the key and nomads help a lot.
I tryed a few things with a saved game at year 10 of my last attempt and reached 500 during year 22 but I should have worked on the earlier developpement that was not good enough.
Title: Re: Does anyone want a new challenge?

i am sorry but i know i never intended to win the fastest race to 500 lol. i will never do a game without school lol hehe
but i will maybe win the prttiest town one ? hehe ai aim for that :)

i will continue to play tonight, trying to reach this 500. then i will make a blog with the screenshots i took all along the game... and talk about those....
and then i will come here to post my results :)

I really appreciated the challenge and the itiative to start a challenge :) i like challenges :)

I have only ever played the vanilla version of this game. But, since we have until the 23rd of April, I think I might try to figure out the mods world with this challenge.  I am tempted...  Let's see if I can squeeze this in.  April is a busy month for me.

Thanks for throwing the challenge out there @Nilla !

Just a small report from my Woolstein. It has survived! I had some beer and a little firewood in the other trading ports and I also realized that I wouldn´t build so many more houses so I could sell most of the lumber and buy a load of good tools. Now when I don´t need to grow so fast, I´ve built some schools. It looks like the first graduated all work in the wood industry. The place is flooded by logs and firewood. We are still short on clothing but that will not kill the town. As soon as there are some educated tailors things will work out.

I know, I didn´t say anything about that the town needs to survive a certain number of years after it has reached 500 but I find it´s a bonus if it does.

I was pretty confident you will be able to keep your city alive longer :)
Good job though !

Now I'm making a new fast attempt. So no school and nomads attractors.
I've reached the end of year 10 and I have 100 citizens. But this was not easy at all to achieve.
Not because of any problem with ressources or food. Just because it seems the only thing that matter is luck regarding the number of births and the even balance of boys and girls.
About the even balance you can save the game often and reload if it's going wrong. I don't really enjoy it but i did it a few times to keep the same numbers of men and women.
About the number of births I have no clue if there is any parameter that matters.
So I think @Nilla your 100 citizens in year 10 are impressive with only 5 nomads (I had 4+7). Is this just luck with these births or are you hiding something from us ? :)
Or maybe there is something basic I don't know about :-\

About what to build I believe there are many possibilties. I'm going for colorfull little houses even if they are a bit expensives compared to country little houses, but you need less space for them and I like this. I don't intend to trade. I hope i can keep making steel tools with charcoal. And I think I can afford to grow rice even if the numbers are lower than cranberry and watercress.

Had some tryes myself. It seems i cant beat 19 year. You to good Nilla ;)  Dont think im gone try fast 500 anymore  :P  I tryed city hall on the water, but no nomads come. Had like 300 on year 19,
EDIT: its year 16 for you. Omg its even better
Title: Re: Does anyone want a new challenge?
Post by: Nilla on March 31, 2019, 01:00:41 AM
I know, @hopledor, this balance boys/girl has a big impact but I´m too lazy to save and reload just to get a balance. I first had many boys than many girls but it wasn´t all too bad in that game. But it makes a big difference if you do reload. Quite a long time ago, we had the "100-challenge" here on this headline. There was some experimenting and if you read the threads, you can see that @Brugle who was fastest in two of the categories did this save reload; very successfully.

My main "trick" (obvious not really a trick) is to have a house for every 10 years old girl. If there are numerous single girls I only let one or two of them move out to live alone and wait for boys to be old enough. The start is important. If you read that 100-challenge you can see that I made some experiments with different starts; few and many children. So at the very beginning, I first build a house, let a couple move in, after a short time I fake demolish it and let another couple move in. I make this several times until everyone has lived in that house. This way I have the same effect as I would have if I build a boarding house first; every family gets a baby soon. I can´t think of any other tricks but I think I was lucky with the nomads, after the first very small "batch" I had 4 quite large groups.

I hope I haven´t discouraged you to try @lasjoss. I know it´s not easy to beat 16 years but I also know that it´s possible. I first had the same issue with the city hall on the water, then I asked @RedKetchup and he said it also needs a dock market place. The stone dock city hall and the lighthouse, however, need nothing more, so I upgraded that wooden city hall to stone and started to get nomads.
Title: Re: Does anyone want a new challenge?
Post by: hopledor on March 31, 2019, 02:52:45 AM
Thanks @Nilla I'm going to read this thread.

I reached 500 citizens late spring 17.
Nomads didn't came soon enough and previous nomads were not many. I'm not sure when the attractors trigger. It seems related to the date you build it. Maybe not. Also the % from the townhouse seems to be lower than the lighthouse's one.
Title: Re: Does anyone want a new challenge?
Post by: Nilla on March 31, 2019, 04:41:39 AM
See, @hopledor you are pretty close. With a bit more luck by the time nomads arrive, you would have been faster than I was. I think the time and number (% of the population) of nomads are random inside a range set by the modder. I don´t know if @RedKetchup has made it different at the different townhalls.

Another city
The idea was to not flatten the land and build canals to connect the second lake to the river.
2 villages and a main city along the larger canal.

@lasjoss; I´m pretty sure that your missing a star of happiness is because you have no graveyards. The only thing that has a significant influence on happiness is missing a family member without a graveyard.

My first Banished challenge! I played a lot when it came out, and again 3 years ago but started back up about 3 weeks ago. I had always played vanilla before trying out RKEC 2 weeks ago. This was my third or fourth run on the challenge map. I starved to death the first times.

I can't say this was a fast run to 500. I can't say that it's necessarily pretty. But my people are happy! It took me a long time to get to 500 because I had a very shaky start. Twice I was down to just 2 breeding houses. After I finally got my food situation sorted out, I started taking in nomads which sped the final run to 500.

I'm sorry I was ill as my deadline passed, so there was no "evaluation" of this challenge. I still hope it made those few who participated a lot of fun anyway. It's obvious; @hopledor is the winner of this challenge! His fast village reached 500 inhabitants in summer 16 and his settlement Saipabossa is (to my opinion) the most beautiful and prosperous of those shown on this thread.

So, better late than never:

CONGRATULATIONS @hopledor! Well done!
