Chapter 15

Riverboat Junction North Annex - Story 84

By early year 9, the north warehouse was 100% full and we built a second warehouse next to it.  One of the workers was transferred to work at the new warehouse.  When Jailynneth came to the north port with more leather he said he was really looking forward to fall when the merchandise could be picked up.  He was working long hours, many of them in the dark now that the days were getting shorter.  He sometimes arrived when it was already getting dark, if the weather was bad we offered him a room for the night.  We gave him one of the wool coats to take the evening chill off before he went on his way.  He was very appreciative and glad that we had added wool and warm coats to the warehouse stock.

To help make things a little brighter for our river boatman, we built two lighthouses that year.  One in the north and one in the south.

Chapter 16

The last worker was no longer needed in the first north warehouse, he transferred to the second one and a third worker was added.  The first worker said he often had trouble getting cheese, walnuts, potatoes, and sometimes carrots.  We took another look at our inventory records and made some production changes.

We had plenty of wheat and flour so one of the wheat fields was planted with more carrots instead.  We stopped work at the mill so the worker could work elsewhere.  We added another worker to milk the cows and goats, and another to make the cheese.  An animal shed was built down by the south fields for more milk and eggs.  Another worker was also assigned to pick walnuts and apple.  Two fields of potatoes were not nearly enough to meet our needs and the needs of the north and Smallville.  We realized that the south warehouse was not getting its fair share of potatoes.

Chapter 17

In spring of year 10, 7 adults with 2 young children arrived from Smallville.  They were migrants who were asked if they wanted to wait for supplies or come here.  They chose here and we were glad to have more help.

An apple tree and two more walnut trees were planted up by the beehives and the north lighthouse, 2 workers were assigned to those trees.  Another worker was assigned to the compost bin because we had 2 new pumpkin patches that needed compost.   One pumpkin patch was by the squash house across from the sunflower patch and the other was next to the pumpkin house at the south end of the field where the pumpkins were planted the previous year.  The 2 pumpkin crop fields were planted that year with potatoes instead.  All the south fields were planted with potatoes.  The north fields were all planted with potatoes or carrots.  The potato fields all had 2 farmers assigned.

Even with 7 potato fields we doubted we would have anywhere near the amount of potatoes needed for Smallville.

Chapter 18

By late summer of year 10, we needed another warehouse for the north.  The 3 workers immediately got to work to fill the 3rd warehouse.  Even with 3 workers it was slow going to get the food from the storage units to the warehouse.  We began paving the main roads with stone hoping to help things move along a little faster.

At the end of the road another crop field was cleared and ready to be planted with potatoes the following year.  A colorful little house was built there for one of the families that was living in the rooming house.  The harvest had begun and we all hoped the weather would hold long enough for all the potatoes and carrots to be harvested.

Chapter 19

After the harvest was completed we had to build another warehouse for Smallville's potatoes.  It was completed by early spring of year 11.  The first potato warehouse was almost full, it had 5,100 potatoes.  We had hoped for 5,700 times 3.  The other warehouse was filled with iron tools, hide coats, seed, and seedlings. We still needed 121 iron tools, there was not enough room in the warehouse for them.  There were more seeds and seedlings plus vouchers for both large and small trade animals at the south trading post.  We would stock the rest of the needed iron tools there.

Riverboat Junction North Annex - Story 84

We knew we had little chance of meeting our potato goal for Smallville but we were determined to have as many potatoes as possible in the warehouses for the fall pick-up.  Our new goal was 11,400 which was 5,700 x 2.  That spring we planted all 8 fields with potatoes.  A tiny green farmhouse was built by the new field and a 2nd story was added to the latest colorful little house to be built and to its neighboring house as well.  In late summer of year 11, an old shack was built by the water mill and all the migrants that arrived the previous year now had homes.

Chapter 20

Riverboat Junction North Annex - Story 84

Those migrants brought Riverboat Junction North Annex's population, in late summer of year 11, to 181, 110 adults, 25 students, and 46 young children.  All were happy and healthy.  We had 69 families, many of which were young singles still living at home.  RJ North Annex had 50 homes, some of which were old town shacks, some tiny houses, and some colorful little houses like Smallville had.  We even had some squash and pumpkin houses.

We had 2 schools, a mill and a bakery.  We had a seedling greenhouse just like the one in Smallville.  We had farmyards and patches, small orchards and 10 crop fields, all growing fruits and vegetables for us and the north and potatoes for Smallville.  We were raising chickens, sheep, cows, and goats for Smallville and for animal sheds in the north.  We were quite pleased with all we had accomplished.

Chapter 21

All the fields were planted with potatoes that 11th year and when the harvest began we held our breaths that all the potatoes would be harvested before the first frost.  Jack Frost did not wait until fall to put the frost on the pumpkin that year, it was still late summer when the first frost hit but it was a light one and did no damage to the harvest totals.

Riverboat Junction North Annex - Story 84

The following year all the fields were again planted with potatoes.  By late summer of year 12, the 3 warehouse in the main part of town were filled with items for the river boatmen to pick up and trade with towns in the north.  The 3 warehouses contained a total of 7,440 items.  There were 620 each of apples, cabbage, carrots, cheese, corn, flour, potatoes, pumpkins, squash, sunseeds, thatch, and walnuts, plus 250 each of warm and wool coats.  The towns in the north would get their needed items much sooner and the river boatmen would not have to travel back and forth from Riverboat Junction in the south.

It was another year, and another late summer harvest had begun before our new goal of 11,400 potatoes for Smallville was reached.  Two of the south warehouses contained 5,175 potatoes and the 3rd warehouse contained the remaining 1,50 potatoes.  The other items needed by Smallville were already waiting at the south trading post to be picked up in fall.  There were 345 iron tools, 285 hide coats, 500 orchard seedlings, 25 vouchers for chickens, 20 vouchers for cow, goats, and sheep, plus 75 sacks of seeds for crop fields.  Migrating families leaving Smallville would be off to a good start.

  Chapter 22

Yes, weary traveler, once again late summer has turned into fall.  Jailynneth and Brigetta and other river boatmen will soon be here to pick up the supplies for the north and for Smallville, and we will continue to fill the warehouses.  Riverboat Junction North Annex is a pleasant place to live and work, it's a beautiful town.  We've been told it's a lot more colorful than Riverboat Junction.  I suppose that's partly due to Smallville's influence but mostly it is because of our beautiful fall trees.  The subtle sunset shades of the oaks are spectacular and the sunny vibrant maples take your breath away.  Even cloudy rainy days seem bright and cheerful, chilly fall days seem warm and sunny.

Riverboat Junction North Annex - Story 84

The autumn leaves have even begun to fall, weary traveler.  They are under the trees and on the roads and fields, the school children are outside playing in them.  And now it's time for you to leave.  Happy first day of autumn, weary traveler, and enjoy the fall season.

The End
