Title: Bodiam Castle
Post by: child_of_air on September 07, 2018, 02:49:50 AM
If anyone is looking for ideas, or would like to take on a project, I'd love to see Bodiam Castle in the game. Ever since Kid did Gothic Fantasy, I've been wanting MORE castles in my game, because what is Medieval life without a Lord and Lady? Can you imagine how wonderful it would look for a medieval style game? The castle could function as a boarding house, and come with a modular bridge you could place on a lake.

Come to think of it, any castle would do, quite honestly. I'm just longing for more! :)

Hi @child_of_air , you made me interested but I must say it is a big castle!
53x57 meters (173x187 feet) !!!

If you say one game tile is roughly 1.75m (estimated from the length of bannies)
the castle would take 30x33 tiles to build. You really need a lake  ;) :)

The castle is in ruins. I have the ground plans (where I got the dimensions)
but nothing on upper floors. I found one very rough picture that could help.

All this is nothing if it will be a huge building with only one function.
There is no way to dismantle it and have it modular. Walls, living quarters, kitchen,
chapel, smith...   Of course there is but then it is not Bodiam Castle.

So - I could have Bodiam as a starting point and make modules to build a castle.
Outer walls, towers and inner buildings.

Now the hard part. How do I get modules to come to the water?
Do i build from bottom  ??? or even worse - do I flatten each piece of land?
What do I do between modules? It will look like Venice  ;D

This was fun :) Now it is your turn to think :)

;D I can use your Forest Center code, @RedKetchup
One piece of flattened ground with surrounding walls.
Several options for buildings on tunnel pathbits within walls...

Hmmm.. could be built both on water and on land...

Honestly Kid, I'm super flexible about that. Obviously we need to fit buildings into the mechanics of the game, so it could be "inspired" by Bodiam, but not exactly Bodiam itself. That would suit me just fine, and making it modular I think would make it a lot more flexible. So if you can make it modular, please by all means, do so. Your Gothic Fantasy set is great in that way, as each new town that I build with that set never looks the same. And I love that, I think many people prefer modular. Then of course we could have other functional buildings that make the whole castle self-sufficient, as they surely were in real life.

So, if you made it modular perhaps you could make one of the pieces that fits near the water a trader, or a fishery, but it just looks like main part of the building? I don't know, just throwing out ideas. Another option would you could just create pieces for a jetty that would fit into the main part of the castle and extend out into the water, but have the actual building itself on land. Of course that wouldn't be Bodiam, but I think it would still be very beautiful and attractive. So far, nothing like that has ever been done before with a castle.

In any case, I'll let you decide the particulars since I don't mod this game and don't know the mechanics of modding it. Thanks for being interested and possibly taking up the project! Let me know if I can be any help.

This can be interesting. I have a ground plan for the castle (picture)
Within the walls will be designed areas to build smith, baker, chapel... I don't know.
The main part I show now will be boarding house.

It is all about finding the right lake, where there are no boats. :)

The towers could act as normal houses and wall sections between them and the gates as various production sites.

Love that water castle! I would happily give my bannies a ruling elite living in a castle :)

Great idea, like the other castle mod. High towers for the ruling class.

Sorry to disappoint both of you. Wall and towers IS the main building.

It is done to give me raised ground in the middle where I can put other buildings.
Otherwise I would have only islands and a big mess.

You are welcome to suggest function for main building. Right now it is boarding house
but it is free. The other buildings are only vague thoughts but I think at least some
storage and a smith.

Here it is more developed.
I will work on the upper edges tomorrow.

Textures can change. This is just for testing.

Oh, that's fine Kid! That's actually what I wanted, but I do hope some other housing can be provided before you are finished. Everything is looking so good, I'm impressed with how quickly you work. :)

Oh yes, there will be more.
I had a free Sunday and got a lot done. Things will be a bit more pressed later.
But just hang in there and I will work some more on it. It is only half done now.

Doesn't the middle space just scream for useful buildings?

Oh, very nice, and yes it does! Small buildings such as a smithy, outdoor kitchen, and a butcher would be wonderful! I'm super excited!

Storage, smith, tailor (?), baker before butcher and first I thought a chapel but
who wants bannies idling on an island?  :D Same with herbalist, no herbs around.
Never mind just 4 places for buildings. You can pick and choose.

I will see what I can do. I take it easy now when main part is done.
BTW- Main part is working fine as hostel. :)

 :(

I just found out I will never be able to place another building inside the castle since it is over water.  :(

I, kind of, hit a wall.

Ouch...

hmmm  :(  There are jetty buildings that are placed on water.  Is there away to adapt that type of building to go inside castle?

i think what you need to do is do a form that goes in middle of the lake that will contain the terraforming and ask players to destroy it.
and then players with all the other pieces, they can mount their bodiam castle. maybe you can god for the front and back walls, and then the side walls everything imbricating together. and then after, you can even do pieces to go in middle.

Post by: kid1293 on September 12, 2018, 08:43:17 AM
Yes, I know, RK. The puzzle variant. I do not want that.
I even tried to terraform first and build a main castle without water/deepwater
then your code for tunnel buildings did not work. I must have missed something.

I can go so far as to terraform but I do not like being forced to make a puzzle.

Hmmm.....well that sucks. I guess it makes sense though, given the mechanics of the game. But I'd still be happy with buildings that matched the texture you ended up using, and some castle walls. We could have the actual castle be on the water like it is in real life, but have the village on the land such as it is today. This does mimic real life, and since you don't want to do a puzzle type set, I'll still be happy with matching village pieces. Agricultural buildings would be wonderful, as the land surrounding the castle is mainly used for just that.

By the way, since Red made goats with goat milk for me, do you think you could update the goat milk buildings to use his resource? Maybe make something to go with this set?

:) You are positive to making it only a hostel in the lake. It gladdens me.
This was a setback for me. I only want to step back and think it through.

I have tested to build it on land and I have made some progress.
You could flatten a 19x21 area in a lake and build it there if you still want it
in a lake. Later I can make that land based hostel with some extra buildings.

For now I plan to upload it as it is, on water.
I just put some deco in and a small jetty to connect it with
the lake shore and then it is up to you to find a suitable lake :)

It is a great building with a lot of potential to be the center of a village.
But, as I said, I am a little on edge with it now.

:)

No, I'm not positive about it, I'm just flexible. As I said before, I could go either way. I do hope you will change the texture though, to something that is more in line with the real thing.
Title: Re: Bodiam Castle
Post by: kid1293 on September 13, 2018, 02:59:09 AM
The only thing I can offer is to flatten 19x21 in a lake and carefully place the castle there.
There is no middle thing if you really want to build inside. And there is more...
The buildings must be placed inside castle. The bannies will walk right through them.
This is not a 'complete village' mod.

By the way -  I changed texture

Or maybe vanilla?
Title: Re: Bodiam Castle
Post by: child_of_air on September 13, 2018, 02:27:20 PM
NOT a fan of the vanilla texture. I really dislike the vanilla textures in the game. They are too low-res I think, and boring.
Title: Re: Bodiam Castle
Post by: kid1293 on September 13, 2018, 02:36:23 PM
Well, I have done what I can. You only say you don't like. What do you want?
I can not make those real life textures. They would be gigantic. And take a lot of time.
The first texture was the best. There were not much visible repeat pattern in it.
I always try very hard to come up with good textures but Banished is somewhat lo-res.

Not like vanilla, that is a shame since now there are already so many new vanilla building to choose from to add to the castle.

What about stone like Broadway Tower?
Title: Re: Bodiam Castle
Post by: embx61 on September 13, 2018, 05:18:37 PM
Bricks are always  hard to find a good texture for a big building like a castle.
Repeating seamless patterns cannot be avoided unless you put a texture in (If you can find it) like 4096x4096 what takes up a lot of memory.

I not even sure if banished support those gigantic textures.

Biggest texture I ever used is 1024x1024

One way which has helped me is to use an asymmetrical pattern.
They can show up really good.

Check this. Note baker on courtyard.

@child_of_air - a little less boring :)

I also like the stone on the Cathedral in your Gothic Fantasy (light) set. Maybe that? That way it can match.
Title: Re: Bodiam Castle
Post by: galensgranny on September 14, 2018, 03:57:51 PM
Wow, Kid, that looks great!   I like buildings in the courtyard and if they can "work" that is super!  All the stone textures look good, but that sort of multi colored stone one is my favorite, the one you called "a little less boring".
Title: Re: Bodiam Castle
Post by: kid1293 on September 14, 2018, 08:17:26 PM
Hi Granny!
That tipped the decision in favor of 'multi-colored' texture. It seems as if most people like it.
@child_of_air - I can always change it later :)

I now have smith, tailor, baker and butcher. A storage barn is on the way.
The castle is build-able on land. You have to save game first if you plan to
raise ground in a lake. It is a bit sensitive to placement. But once it is there...  :) :) :)

I must say that the suggestion about placing the castle in a lake was absolutely
the best solution. I don't like digging holes in the ground for a moat.
Title: Re: Bodiam Castle
Post by: child_of_air on September 15, 2018, 04:45:30 PM
Agreed, I would not want to dig a moat either.

Kid, if you are feeling up to it you could make more than one texture we can access with the F key, that way they could fit into a variety of your other sets? I think that would be great, but it might be too much work for you. Anyway, I'm very excited to see your progress. Yay!
Title: Re: Bodiam Castle
Post by: kid1293 on September 15, 2018, 08:35:34 PM
:) I'll see what I can do. I wanted the castle to be unique but since
it is here I may as well use it.

Storage and school added. I have 'stolen' support buildings from my
Gothic Fantasy mod and re-textured.
Title: Re: Bodiam Castle
Post by: galensgranny on September 16, 2018, 01:59:58 PM
Kid, such a huge castle will certainly be unique, even if there are F key texture variants.
With the additional buildings you are making, can they go inside the courtyard, or only able to be outside the castle?
Title: Re: Bodiam Castle
Post by: kid1293 on September 16, 2018, 02:45:41 PM
The support buildings go inside.
That was my intention from the beginning but I got some bumps on the road.
It is now totally land-based and you need to flatten an area in a lake to put it there.
I could not make normal house paths for the inside buildings. They are build-able
on roads and bannies will run right through if they get a chance. I have limited the
movement on courtyard. There should not be much running through walls.

I think I can release it soon.
