Chapter 12

The winter thaw lasted long enough for 1 plum to grow and be picked.  It was a sure sign we would have a plum harvest that year.  The building materials had been delivered and by early spring the brick house was completed.  The firebricks made a very attractive looking house.

In spring 9 migrants arrived in town, they were on their way south to Monkstown.  They heard there was a monastery there and they wanted to live in a place of peace and hope.  It would be a very long and difficult journey and they had young children with them.  It was peaceful here and we had high hopes that our town of Misty Meadow would continue to thrive.  Cam suggested we build an Abbey across the river, it would be a peaceful secluded retreat.  The families agreed to stay.  We needed more housing first.

We did not have quite enough material for a second brick house because the brick maker was experimenting with roof tiles that we currently had no use for.  The foundation for a second house was laid and the builders were just waiting for more bricks to be made. While they waited they build a short brick wall around the yard of the first house where there was now a back yard preservist workplace just waiting for the plums to be harvest.  We had a large surplus of wild honey that would be used for jam making.

In early autumn a clay pit fear became a reality.  Oralie, the stone cutter, fell and was crushed by a rock in the big clay pit.  We were distracted by the death and burial in the cemetery next to the chapel and failed to start the plum harvest early.  The total harvest of 602 plums was not bad considering we did lose some of the harvest to an early frost and snowfall in late autumn.  By early winter we had our first fruit jam from the workplace preservist.

By late winter the second house was built near the first one.  We needed more houses.  We still had building materials on hand and were producing more.  The tiny clay pit was producing well, better than the bigger deeper pit.  The size and depth of the larger pit no doubt responsible for the extra time it took to dig out the clay.  We would build more stone or brick houses next year, and an Abbey.

Chapter 13

In early spring of year 13 we assessed the land across the river and realized there was a lot of work to be done.  But first, a workplace forester was set up not far from the tiny lumberer to insure the town had enough logs for firewood while we were busy on the other side of the river.  A second floor was added to one of  the brick houses for the workers.   The rest of the year was devoted to clearing an area across the river of trees, stone, and iron.  It was hard and heavy work but it paid off.  By late autumn of year 13 the beautiful Abbey, complete with bell tower, was finished.

There were deer, grouse, and wild boar in the Misty Meadow so it was decided that the Abbey garden would be enclosed with a stone wall.  Apple trees would be planted within the wall.  By early spring of year 14 work was well underway and continued on throughout the year.  By early spring of year 15 the wall was almost complete.  Two bee hives were set up to pollenate the apple trees and 2 fountains were built for fire fighting and beautification.

Things continued to go well in town also.  The last brick house that was build now had a workplace brewer in its backyard.  Misty Meadow had 14 backyard village workplaces in all.

By the end of year 15 the Abbey garden was complete.  Two tiny houses for the apple farmers and bee keepers were build with the protective walls.  We looked forward to the first apple harvest.  The area was indeed a place of peace and hope for the future.  We looked forward to spring.

Grouse are double the size of chickens. They could go for a hunched down turkey
if they are made three times the size. :)

Chapter 14

Spring of year 16 was everything one hoped it would be, sunny days that were pleasantly warm with gentle breezes that did not blow the meadow mist away.  The meadow flowers bloomed early and it appeared we would have our first harvest of apples from the Abbey garden.  The farmers were in their fields planting and the cleaning shed workers were already busy working in the pastures, the fields, and the hot houses.  The compost bins got their first good turning of the spring season and the fresh compost was taken to the growing houses as needed.

Misty Meadow had a population of 124, 77 adults, 22 students, and 25 young children.  All were 100% happy and healthy.  Our education rate was improving and now that the Abbey garden was finished we could concentrate on building more houses and another school.

And so weary traveler, my story about Misty Meadow has come to an end.  There is room in the hostel if you decide you want to stay.  Its another beautiful day.  I hope you will enjoy it.
