Title: Overlapping markets, storage, movement of goods
Post by: gatinho65 on October 05, 2017, 11:05:58 AM
Okay another rather vanilla question but since I am trying to use various modded markets and storage units, I will ask anyway.

Does there need to be some overlap, maybe just a bit at the edges, between the various markets and/or storage units like cellars and barns and boxes so that the goods end up distributed widely among the homes within the various circles? So say I want to build a land market where it covers most houses, but then also want to build a river market to meet the needs for some of the producers living near work across the river or beyond the reach of the main market circle. If I overlap the river market a bit with the main market, will the laborers and vendors transport goods between the two market spheres? Or, if the river market is beyond the reach of the main market circle, will it only be able to stock what is stored in the small barns I placed near the work places and/or homes within its own circle?

Or, if I have an herbalist well outside the reach of the main market/housing area, do I need to still try placing its storage unit (I love those colored Maritime cellars) within the main market circle so that they get picked up by the vendor? Is there a way to get other goods into that cellar so that my herbalist living in the woods can get more goods in their own home storage and/or the cellar where they store the herbs, the one I placed just inside the edge of the market circle? It seems wrong that the herbalist has the worst diet of all my citizens lol.

I feel like I used to understand the movement of goods better when I first played the game lol, if there is already a good guide to how it works across multiple market networks post a link.

Vendors will go anyplace on the map to stock their market. They are going to try to stock some logs, some iron, some tools, some coats, some textiles, some fuel, and some of each food group. The only thing they will not do is take stock from another market (or from a TP, or from any storage building that is based on the TP, i.e. one that has a worker stocking it).

Normally laborers and producers will place items in a market only if it is the nearest storage.

Overlapping the circles has no bad effects at all.

Again, a vendor will go anywhere on the map to find stock for his market, so it is normally beneficial to place a storage unit near any producer so whoever is storing that producer's output will not have a long walk.

It is no bad thing to locate your herbalist's dwelling so he lives inside a market circle. Since herbalists, foresters, hunters, and gatherers do not actually work at their cabins but everywhere inside their circles, as long as the circle is not far from the market circle, the walk to work won't be so bad. I try to keep all of my housing inside at least one market circle.

There is no way to control what is stored in a barn. The best you can do is to locate the barns near producers of all four food groups. If a forest group's housing is not in a market circle, I often put a small wheat field next to that forest group's barn, so there (maybe) will be some grain in it.

@irrelevant: Great info, somehow I didn't know that the vendors went everywhere lol, I thought they were also confined within the circle of the market. So as long as I plant storage near all the places the goods are produced, the vendors will find them no matter how far away.

Interesting what you said about the herbalist working in the circle, my hunter in a new town chose to live very far from his workplace lol, and he often 'harvests' deer he meets wandering back and forth between eating and idling, far outside his work circle lol. So I guess hunters can hunt whatever they find even outside their circle, that is cool.

one trick is to use market carts or specific markets to supply workplaces. such as a log cart near a wood cutter or EB's markets near blacksmiths.so many options.

I've seen this before as well. This almost certainly was a new hunter/new cabin scenario. The hunter(s) assigned to the cabin initially will be the next available laborer(s) in the queue (or possibly a hunter previously assigned to a different cabin). This person could live anywhere, and as you say he met up with a herd of grazing deer on his way to his new job. But the job assignment engine will re-shuffle the job deck in fairly short order; after that, the hunter(s) will live nearby, and you won't see this.

Yes, a specialized market with a cluster of related producers can really crank out the goods!
