Stories of Esopus:
QuoteA Dutch river town with no port? Can that even be Dutch? Ours will be ready for trade in the spring. It needs to be, after the debacle at the windmill. Before the windshaft was joined to the wallower, the sails blew in the most gentle of breezes. When the whole mechanism was engaged, it turns out a mighty breeze was needed for even the smallest movement. Luckily, the slaughter of the sheep provided some animal fat which we used to lubricate the gears and shafts. Once lubricated, the mill functioned very well, and we produced our first bags of corn flower.
The foundations for the town hall and the village inn are in place. We may also build a temporary shelter boarding home for new arrivals to use while their homes are built. I'd also like to build a physician's home and lure a physician to join us, but Lord de Jonckheer thinks we're doing well with the services of the doctor who shuttles between New Amsterdam and Fort Orange.
At least now the war with the English has ended. We heard only scattered stories of the naval battles. Trade with home will now be more profitable and much safer. Lord de Jonckheer even has an idea of building a whaling fleet for the colony now that peace appears to be at hand.
Mother, please give my love to father. I know he swore to never speak to me again, but I hope you may warm his heart towards me. I know if he is ever to see our windmill, he would be proud.
All my love, Callison

Patroon's Report:
We have identified where our first port will be located, just west of the village. We will also clear land for a town hall and prepare to receive new settlers. We will begin to produce flour from corn in preparation of constructing a bakery.

I used the Cheat Engine camera hack to get this shot. This is looking into the colony from the south east. The trading post foundation can be seen on the north shore of the river at the left of the picture.

I always play with weather effects off, so I don't remember if there is a motion of the sun. One thing that bothers me is that the shadows are positioned to show the sun being in the north east, which doesn't happen in the winter in the northern hemisphere.

Patroon's Report:
QuoteEarly Spring, 1656
For five years, we have all toiled to build a colony as a community and shining beacon in this new world. We have overcome every obstacle through good planning, hard work and shared sacrifice. Callison, who has designed all of the buildings in the colony, including our grand windmill, asked me to build a physician's house and recruit a doctor to join us. I was too blinded by our success to see that he was right, and now his beautiful wife, Jerryl, has paid for my failure with her life and the life of their unborn child.

The Haak family has taken young Glorin for the time being. Callison only needed to put the finishing touches on the port for it to be ready for the spring. We've set aside firewood, fish, corn and wool to trade, but it seems meaningless right now.

The whole of the town is in mourning. We haven't even started to plan how we'll make up for the loss when it comes to growing the colony. We have enough salted fish stored that we can pull away from catching too many new ones for a while. It will still be a few years before the children are out of school. My best hope is that we will attract some new settlers soon.

@torgonius, the art is stunning! How did you do the map?

Having used your citizen tracker alongside a genealogy program I know how much work you are doing to produce these entries. Plus the artwork! By the way, I was playing around with the game-year and season to historical-year converting spreadsheet you did awhile back and I may have come up with a version that can take any starting year and give calendar years for game-year and season. So far I've only used it twice, so I'm not sure it's infallible. If you're interested I can post a version which you can try out.

torgonius

For the map, I used the camera hack to go as high as I could while looking straight down and not going too far into the clouds.

I de-saturated the color from the screenshot in Photoshop, then went over it with a mostly transparent yellow a few times to get the color tone. After that, the posterize filter was able to enhance the roads and other edges to really bring them out. The last touch was the texture application. I used canvas because it actually gave a more papery look to it.

The screenshots are in 1920x1080. I reduce the final work to 960x540 PNG files.

I've updated my tracker sheet to work with real time aging, so it follows along closely with actual years now. One thing I wish I could do via mod is to make the months match up to real months, so that the year starts with Winter (January) and ends with Early Winter (December). If I get around to doing my ancient Rome themed mod, then it won't be an issue, as their year started in March and ended in February.

I haven't done Esopus up in Family Echo yet, as there have only been two marriages so far to bring families together. My next entry is the 10 year census. I'll probably end up doing maps and a census every 10 years. I need to get more buildings done, though. How many more times do you want to see the windmill? :)

Patroon's Report:
The hospital building will be completed in the next few days. Then the search for a physician begins. There is a debate raging between the men and women of the colony. The men want to build a brewery to make mead from honey. The women want to build a baker to make bread from our flour. While we can and will build both, we can only properly staff one at this time.

Patroon's Report:
Last year saw the first weddings in our town, as young Laver Aarden and Armine Carmen pledged themselves to each other and Vanesha Geleen married widower Callison Fortuin. A parish house was constructed, as was a new home for the couple. The bakery was also completed, and the first bread produced. The men also cheered the arrival of ale via trade. Alas, the last of it was consumed celebrating the nuptials. I am going to order the construction of a brewery so that we may begin brewing our own beverages.

Two more acres of land were cleared after the harvest. The town is now more than 20 acres and growing.

This day, marking the 10th year of settlement, I am commissioning a total census of the population, production and goods currently available. We still await the arrival of our first new settlers promised from my father in New Amsterdam.

Patroon's Report:
Our colony continues to grow. We've constructed another bridge to the western bank of the North River. This cuts several hours off the time it normally takes to walk all the way around to get there. A second apiary has been built, but not yet staffed. The brewery, however, is staffed and mead and pear ale are flowing.

The first children born in the colony have entered school. In a few years, we will have nearly doubled the number of adults living here.

We are also preparing for two additional industries to bolster our economy, candles and glass. A shore house to dig sand from the riverbank to create glassware has been completed. A chandlery has been laid out next to the apiary and will be constructed this year.

The morale of the town has rebounded in the years since we lost Jerryl Fortuin. Callison has taken a new young bride. The men have even talked of literally moving mountains to make new arable land. We are experimenting with a new technique on the west bank of the river just on the other side of the bridge.

Patroon's Report:
Talk about expansion is getting old. It's time to actually expand. I have enquired, again, about new settlers, and have been told that they are actively recruiting, but there have not yet been any people willing to move to the wilderness.

A bridge to the island in the North River has been designed. We will begin collecting the stone to build it early in the year and build it before year's end. A boarding house has also been designed as a place for any new arrivals to stay while a permanent home is built.

Callison has received word from home of a new building style that requires rope to build larger homes. We are actively seeking to trade for more rope or hemp to begin production of our own.

New land is being cleared for more pear orchards and corn fields. A second sheep pasture is also in the planning stages,
