Intro

This is the 2nd story in the New World Series which began when river boatmen, Jenser and Shie, were caught in a storm far north of Smallville and ended up on the other side of the world, shipwrecked.  They reached a small settlement where they helped 4 Nord families developed it into the town of Newburg.  When the town was stable and had a boat builder, Jenser and Shie, along with their 2 youngest children, set off to see the world, heading south down Moon River.  You, eager explorer, went with them.

It wasn't long before the river branched off to the east, and in the distance, Jenser and Shie saw a beautiful rainbow.  They knew that rainbows always appear in the east, when a rainstorm is near its end, but it wasn't raining.  It was too cold to rain. They steered their houseboat up that river and into the mountains, you followed them to where 3 rainbows were arched across the river.  It appeared as if the rainbow's end was waiting just around the bend.

Welcome to Rainbow Falls, eager explorers.  Yes, the rainbows are truly magical, we thought so too when we first arrived here.  How and from where?  Stay a while and  I'll tell you all about it.

Chapter 1

As you may have guessed, eager explorers, we are Elves.  I'm Gillisse and my husband is Erving.  We came through the magic portal from Crystal Canyon; the portal obviously malfunctioned and we came to the wrong place and could not go back.  It was supposed to be a two-way portal.  There were 22 of us, 10 adults with 12 children.  Erv and I had 2 children at the time, a boy and a girl.  Our group was taking wildlife, tree fellows, and tree seedlings to one of the areas that had been severely damaged by tornadoes, but this obviously wasn't one of those places.  Now you tell me that we're on the other side of the world.  That could explain the malfunction and why my crystal ball doesn't show us any places that are familiar to us.  This valley's terrain and climate is very similar to Crystal Canyon's but we were expecting to be somewhere much warmer.  It was snowing when we arrived here.

Like you, we were immediately impressed by the rainbows and the waterfalls.  We were very glad to discover there were mana crystals here; they are essential to Elven spell casting.  The heat generated by the crystals is what keeps the lakes and rivers from freezing in winter. Oh, you must already know that since you were river boatmen in the north.  Well, the waterfalls and ponds don't freeze either, and when we discovered the third waterfall we named our valley Rainbow Falls.

We quickly gathered resources and built a medium-sized storage barn where we could store our meager supplies, take shelter from the cold, and house the small animals we brought with us.  The larger animals went to a nearby wood area with a tree fellow watching over them.  We built a tunnel through the small mountain by the stockpile; we saw there were a lot of downed branches we could use as firewood.  We would rather gather branches than cut trees whenever possible.  It was a bit warmer and out of the wind to go back-and-forth through the tunnel for stones and the wood we needed to cut.  We would need a lot of both.

Chapter 2

The first mountain house was built to the left of the storage barn for the children of two of the families; the children were only 11 and 12 years old when the house was completed.  When the snow melted, they discovered a small patch of hazelnuts, wild oats, mushrooms, asparagus, and branches by the rainbow's end in front of their house.   Everyone was surprised when the young couple had a baby girl together the following year.

Two more mountain houses were built to the right of the stockpile.  One of the families was that of the young mother.  They built a branch cart for firewood collecting.  We were struggling with both our firewood and food supplies.  There was a hedgerow in front of those two house that had hazelnuts, a plum tree, wild honey, and rabbits.  Our food supply would get a little more help.

Our nice house was built by the waterfall and rainbow.  There was a downed tree extending into the river that we used as a fishing tree although we could also catch fish from the waterfall ponds.  I was fishing until I went to help build the crystal garden by the waterfall across from us.  We needed crystals to build a magic school, to make and enchant hunting bows and arrows, to cast tool summoning spells, and to grow food in a magic garden.  Next to the crystal garden was another hedgerow patch with mushrooms, asparagus, and wild oats.   A third hedgerow patch, just like the others, was over by the third waterfall.

Chapter 3

It was late summer before a couple moved into the nice house with a porch that looked out on the 3rd waterfall pond.  They had one child living at home, a boy they named, Wernelio.  Their adult daughter with husband and child were waiting for a home of their own to be built.

Another mountain house was built by winter of that first year.  It was built into the mountain by the waterfall where the crystal garden was.  A magic garden would be across from their house and a spell tower would be next to that.  Now that we had crystals, we could build a magic school.  The couple's youngest daughter, Indi, would probably be the first student if we got it built in time.  The couple's oldest daughter, Maddie, was waiting for a house of her own to be built.  The amounts of logs, firewood, and stone were low.

Chapter 4

In late spring of year 2, we were taken completely by surprise by the arrival of more Elves from Crystal Canyon. They were as surprised as we were to arrive here.  Apparently, the malfunctioning portal had not been fixed or disabled.  They had no idea there was a problem with the portal until they arrived here.  There was still no way of going back.  There were 14 of them, 9 adults with 5 children.  Three families had children, one family did not, and there was one young single female.  The couple without children soon had one, and the young single female paired-up with one of the town's young male who was still living at home.

Since we were short of logs and were in the process of building the last 2 needed homes for original residents, we built 5 make-shift shacks for the newcomers.  They were fine with that and got right to work gathering wild foods and branches.  We were out of coats and almost out of tools.

The magic garden was completed and producing gatherable foods when they arrived.  With more workers we had more builders, more fishing was being done as well as some hunting with the last of our enchanted bows and arrows we brought with us.  The bows are enchanted to be fast and accurate, and the arrows cause the animals no pain.  We were totally out of coats so an evergreen frock maker was built next to the crystal garden house.  The spell tower was completed but before it could make more Elven bow, it would conjure up some hardened tools, our tools were also completely gone.

The magic school was also built across from the storage barn, and it had 1 student.  Two mountain houses were completed and the last of our group of Elves moved into them.  A small barn and a stockpile were built nearby.  A Mother Tree was discovered in the valley just to the east, 2 foresters were assigned to cut and plant trees.

It was early winter of that 2nd year and the 2nd group of Elves were still in their make-shift shacks.

Chapter 5

The group of Elves decided they would like to settle in the clearing in the north valley on the other side of the tunnel.  We had no problem with that as long as they did not disturb the area that the reindeer and grouse frequented; it was a good hunting spot.  The hunter still had some enchanted arrows left but we had not been able to make more bows.  The spell tower was still making tools; our tool supply was growing slowly because of the shortage of wood.

The north valley was a good location to collect branches for firewood which saved a lot of logs.  Another Mother Tree was found in the far northwest valley but no forester was assigned there yet.  Two foresters were assigned to the other newly discovered Mother Tree in the southeast valley. We now had 4 foresters.

By late spring of year 3, a hostel was built, and a house on either side was started in the north valley.  A barn, stockpile, and then a small house was built close to the tunnel.  Building was slow due to the log shortage, but by early spring of year 4, all the temporary houses were demolished.  Houses were still needed for the families in the hostel.

There would have been no room in the hostel for the Elves that came through the magic portal that spring.  There were 11 of them; they decided not to stay but headed south when they learned they could not go back through the portal.

Chapter 6

A mountain house was built in the north valley along with a small house and a tailor and smith.  There was a supply of down from the grouse the hunter was getting, also some furs; the small frock maker was not skilled in using those textiles.  The new tailor was now using the down and leather to make warm coats.

The new smith was making basic iron tools which left the Spell Tower in the main part of town free to make enchanted bows.  A small vine grower nearby was growing and cutting the vines needed for the new bows.  There would soon be a hunter in the Hunting Tower there.  A cemetery was built where the temporary shacks had been, and a marketplace was under construction.

A Tree of Leaflets was carved out to keep town records.   In early winter of year 4, Rainbow Falls had a population of 57, 34 adults, 12 students, and 11 young children.  The magic school in the main part of town was almost full; a new school with indoor classrooms was built in the north valley.  A tree fellow appeared alongside to watch over the children. Another house was built at the end of hostel row, the children would not have far to go to school. The hostel was now empty.  The hunting area was being preserved.

Chapter 7

The Tree of Leaflets also has an inventory of our supplies.  Our food supply was very good except for a lack of grain; we only had a small amount of wild oats now-and-then.  We had plenty of venison and rabbit meat, and hazelnuts.  We had some apples, berries, and plums but could use more.  Although we had a nice variety of food, that variety was not getting to everyone.  The storage barn in the north valley had little food other than venison.  By spring of year 5, we had a marketplace built there by the school.

We could not believe it that more Elves came through the magic portal, 14 of them again, 9 adults and 5 children.  They said there was no indication back in Crystal Canyon that there was anything wrong with the portal.  There was concern that nothing has been heard from any of the others that left; no one returned and there was no vision or contact by crystal ball.  We welcomed the newcomers and were glad to have more workers.  We were glad to have the seeds they brought with them.

There was room in the hostel for all but one family.  A house was built for them east of the 3rd waterfall.  Our 2nd crystal garden was built there and there were plans to build a magic garden next to it to supply that area with more fruits and vegetables. By the stockpile we built a compost bin; we had a lot of extra vines that the magician in the Spell Tower didn't need.

More houses were being built in the north valley for those living in the hostel.  A magic garden was built next to the marketplace so that they were sure to get their fair share of wild oats, apples, berries, plums, mushrooms, roots, pecans, and walnuts.

Chapter 8

More houses were built in the north valley, one at the end of hostel row and 2 mountain houses by the magic garden.  The hostel was empty.  A gatherer's workplace was built in the forest behind hostel row.

Another house was built by the first one east of the 3rd waterfall.  An herbalist workplace was built in the forest there.  A greenhouse was built by the compost bin and oat seeds that the last group of Elves brought with them were planted inside.  We Elves prefer to gather foods from the wild and from hedgerows and patches.  We'd rather grow crops year-round in greenhouses than in farm fields that destroy too many trees.  And of course there's always our magic gardens to conjure up fruits, vegetables, and nuts.  Our 3rd magic garden was built next to the crystal garden by the 3rd waterfall.

In later spring of year 6, 18 more Elves came through the portal but did not stay with us.  We seriously considered disabling the portal but hesitated for fear of where the next group to enter it would end up.  We weren't sure disabling the portal here would prevent others from entering it there.

Chapter 9

By summer of year 6, we had a greenhouse built east of the 3rd waterfall close to the compost bin.  We planted some of the oat seeds that the previous group of Elves brought with them.  We would have grain and we planned another greenhouse to grow potatoes when we were sure to have enough compost for both.   There were also seeds for strawberries, beans, cabbage, corn, pumpkins, and squash.  We'll gladly give you an assortment of all our seeds, eager explorers, when it's time for you to go.

We built a mill across from the greenhouse, and a house nearby for a newlywed couple.  There were many young singles living at home with their parents.  Rainbow Falls had 33 families but only 22 houses.  We had a bit more logs but we were always short of stone, house building was a slow process.  Why yes, eager explorer, we will gratefully accept some of the stone from your tiny quarry in exchange for the seeds, and maybe a bit of wool. We do not want to overhunt our wildlife just for hides or down; our food supply is good.  We are most interested in the trade route you are trying to establish.  We'll build a small trading post as you suggest, and I'm sure we will be able to keep it stocked with nuts and apples to trade.

Having 3 magic gardens gave us more fruit, enough that we could build a nectar garden.  We built it facing the 3rd waterfall, folks can sit at one of the tables in the garden and enjoy a cup of plum nectar and enjoy a nice view of the falls.

Chapter 10

Another mountain house was built in the north valley, and another winter had settled in.  This winter there would be warm nut bread fresh from the new bakery that was being built there.  If we ran short of flour, we could grow more oats in the new greenhouse that was just completed, but for the time being there were new potatoes just coming up.  There was room for another greenhouse, even two or three.  We would need a lot more compost, and more workers on that side of town.  Only one small nice cottage was built there by the crystal and magic gardens.

Those new potatoes would go nicely with the sausages that were being made back in the north valley.  The butcher shop was built by the shops making tools, clothes, and baking bread.  Our food supply was more varied and was keeping up well with the increased population.

Chapter 11

By spring of year 7, we built a large Council Hall in the north valley.  It took quite a while to get the building supplies to the site, all the nearby surface stone had already been gathered.  We could have built a smaller building, I suppose, but this one was quite impressive. There was plenty of room for our town meetings or just for folks to get together to visit and have a little fun.  It made the long winters go a little faster.

Some folks preferred just to get off by themselves, especially in spring and summer.  I myself love to walk along the river in the early morning mist.  Elves enjoy nature and wildlife.  We built a beautiful sanctuary garden in the west valley that we set aside for the wild creatures.  All those that we brought with us have adjusted well and are quite content to stay in the valley. They get along well with each other.  It is magical to sit there in the sanctuary garden and see the animals pass by in the forest that surrounds you.  You must be sure to visit the sanctuary, eager explorers, before you go.

 Chapter 12

You did see the little leprechaun and his pot of gold by the rain, didn't you, eager explorers?  He arrived shortly before you did.  I quess that was our lucky day.  We don't know where he came from.  He danced around town a bit and planted four-leaf-clovers here and there.  He planted a whole patch of them over by the cemetery.  It sure made the folks happy.

In spring, Rainbow Falls had a population of 91 happy and healthy citizen, 60 adults, 14 students, and 17 young children.  We are so pleased with all that we have accomplished in the 7 years since we arrived here.  We are still studying our spell books to see if there if anything we can do about that malfunctioning magic portal.  Shie, I am just glad we were able to make a crystal ball for you and Jesnser, so that you can look back at Newburg and check on your other 2 children and the town until you get back there.  If the view begins to dim, just set a few of the magic crystals we gave you next to it for a while.  Those crystals should last for a very long time.

Chapter 13

As I was saying, we are quite proud of Rainbow Falls.  In the main part of town, we have a crystal garden, a magic garden, a magic school, a spell tower, and a hunting tower.  The market and tree of leaflets were wonderful additions.

The north valley also has a market and a school, plus a hostel, a smith, tailor, baker, and a butcher shop.  There is a forester, a gatherer, and a hunting area that has been protected from the town's growth.  The council hall was a good addition there.

The east valley has a crystal garden and magic garden plus our greenhouses and mill.  We were very happy to have gotten the seeds for vegetables and grain when other Elves arrived through the portal.  The east valley has 2 more foresters; it is important to us Elves to preserve the forests and its creatures.  We are well pleased with our settlement here on the other side of the world.  We are glad that the Elves who came through the portal but did not stay with us may one day receive help from riverboat traders.

Chapter 14

Well, I won't keep you any longer; I know you want an early night before being on your way first thing in the morning.  Your houseboats are loaded with supplies.  I know the 2 girls will take good care of the kitties we gave them.  We will do as you suggested and build a small trading post; we will look forward to a visit from a river boatman.  As I showed you in my crystal ball, there are other towns and settlements out there, but I hope you will consider making the north your permanent home.  The winter skies are clear and the stars and northern lights are bright.  Spring is wonderful when it finally arrives and summer is full of delight.  Winter comes again all too soon; it is good that you will soon be on your way.

Sleep well, eager explorers.  The spirit of the morning mist on the river will see you safely home.

The End
