Title: Cities: Skylines - Xbox One
Post by: Maldrick on April 21, 2017, 07:06:37 AM
Cities: Skylines launched on the Xbox One today.

I'm traditionally a PC gamer going back decades, but about ten years ago I bought a 360 to play Assassin's Creed and I've gotten into playing certain types of games on console as opposed to PC.  Heavily story driven games are nice sitting on the sofa, I guess.

There's always been a distinct lack of these types of games on console, and I'm excited to give it some play.  Tropico 5 is the only recent city builder I know of on console and it was fun, but nothing special like Cities.  Played Cities Skylines for a bit before getting into Banished last year and it's a fantastic game on PC.  There's been no indication they will do this, but Xbox now has the capability to implement mod support and it will be interesting to see if Cities gets to that point.

Loaded it up for a minute, earlier. Controls are a little funky, being used to playing on PC, but it looks great and has a good feel to it.  Very interested to see how console handles the loads when a sizable city is built.

Anybody else checking this out?

Oh, that's interesting, never played it, never even got into Sim City of recent releases (many, many years ago I was), then I found things like Rome II etc ...  But, I did a quick google and found some excellent looking videos.  This one caught my attention.

It's not the XBox version, but, it's enough of an inspiration to show hubby, he is into city builders (when not hunting weird alien critters in ME etc).  Haha.  Might also get jnr off his PC for a bit and back to console.

Thanks @Maldrick I'll check our store account, see if it's listed here in Aus.

Very cool.  Would be interested to hear what you think.  I played the early SimCity games, also.  2k, I think, was the source of many late nights and missed classes in college.  How was Rome?  I think I missed that one but did play the first Ceasar for a bit.

I'm too wrapped up in Banished at the moment to really get into it now, but from a cursory look it looks great.  Console ports are notorious for dumbing games like this down but it doesn't seem to have happened with this.  Controls are weird but that's to be expected.  And there seems to be a menu I can't find but it's been so long since I played on PC that I'm not sure what it is.  It's probably there I'm just not recognizing it.  Thinking I'll brush up on PC before I really play.  But it seems like it's every bit the game from PC, just not as many expansions available and no mods.

Beware, when getting into Cities Skylines, it's basically a traffic simulator.  You know how newbies to Banished seem to get a little overwhelmed before they realize it's a resource and population management simulator disguised as a city builder?  Traffic is kind of like that in Cities Skylines.  You can build this really gorgeous city and completely gimp it by not having your transportation infrastructure in good order.  And it has that same addictive quality like Banished where you will be constantly dreaming up new ways to approach it, even when not playing.  "If I build more subways and put a train here, I wonder if I can keep this highway..." That sort of thing.  Great stuff for gamers who get into this.  Never thought creating bus routes would be fun till I played Cities. lol

SC4 was the best version. the new sc went off the deep end and ruined the game. it became an internet based game and tied you to it. takes options away from players. sadly most games seem to go this route. they grow and get better and then they change style and the next version is not better but either more complicated to work or is ruined in other ways. older games seem to be beter most times.

I grabbed SC4 on a Steam sale a while back.  Planning on giving it a look at some point.  Avoided the last one altogether because I heard about all the frustrations with it from friends and was wrapped up in other games at the time.

Yeah, that's always seemed to be the order of things.  I remember when Civ 2 came out back in the day and the graphics were better, had some cool new features, buildings and units, but it just completely missed some basic functionality that the original game had.  That's the example that always springs to mind when someone brings that up.  It's constantly the case with sequels.

you also get it the other way. i have seen games come out with good ideas and since they didn't take off and had a couple glitches they never expanded. agriculture simulator was that way. you could walk around and do things like water and feed chickens as a person not a tractor. more realistic especially if handling just a small farm.i could not get it to work on my comp and had the gf take it back the next day.i also saw 1 online that you start with a small house and have options on how you set it up. as you gain income you expand and build various barns and outbuildings to suit you.a brilliant free play way of doing things. sadly it also didn't take off and get expanded. the graphics since it was an older game were outdated. the FS13 was a good game but  after a while of playing it it becomes a driving game.
