Wow, great looking town areas, especially the port. Nice designing @Gatherer and nice combination of mods.  But as great as the town areas are, I like that fodder field of Red's outside of town the best.  :)

thanks for the mod list. i didn't realize CC put the deco pak out.

I've found that the grass is too overpowered with this mod setup though. Apart from the areas worked by foresters there are almost no trees left on the map. I've used Natural Diversity mod before and had no such problems. Something just isn't right but at the same time with the absence of trees the game runs very smooth.
Title: Re: Random images from Castle Rock maps
Post by: brads3 on February 21, 2018, 05:14:11 PM
does the map start with less trees or are they dying off? i have heard after 100 yrs or so the maps can look barren and be all grass. i use the immortal tree mod. i havent gone through your mod list yet. have doc appointments rest of the week but hoping to look at it soon.

be advised MM deco pack does not work without CC. i did file a request to them for 1 that will.
Title: Re: Random images from Castle Rock maps
Post by: Gatherer on February 22, 2018, 03:19:38 PM
In what way does it not work? So far all the building resources not available through other mods are brought by merchants. I'm also using CC Transport, CC Stacked and CC Docks mods.

Other than that there are a few blank dot icons. So far I've found 3 and click tested one without crashing. So in this one instance it is just a mising icon problem. Haven't tested the other two yet.

so you aren't using a main CC like the mega or journey? hmm strange i wonder if i had the compatability buildings mod turned on.when i click the deco icon, i get a fatal error did it twice.

They are purely decorative. So are the trees on that picture. Sitting on Necora's impassable empty tiles.

Title: Re: Random images from Castle Rock maps

Thanks guys and girls. :)

There are already some small problems though. The main big city will be built with Azem Ocram's modern looking rowhouses. Because of this most of the existing schools in many mods are too small (not enough capacity). I will build Mr. Red's college but for the most part I am forced to build 2 schools close together for every city block. Visuals are a problem on its own.

The second problem are shops and markets. For a big city the ordinary markets are not visualy suitable though I am forced to use some. Necora's Sherbrooke market is the best option here as it is a building with actual walls and a roof +  a high storage capacity. And it also comes in 3 different textures.

What is needed here is modders coming together on a group project in creating some schools and department stores with a high capacity that are suitable for big cities:
- Schools: 4x6 to 6x6 size (60-80 students) + 4x5 to 5x6 size (40-60 students but with the option for lean-to additions for 10-15 additional students)
- Department stores: Edible and inedible food, herbs, tools, clothes and firewood. 5x6 to 7x7 size.

1 schoold and 1 department store from each modder and all compiled into a single .pkm file.

If you dream, dream big.
 ;)

Exciting to see how this will end! I've never seen such a modern city in Banished before.

I hope I'll get to the end. Even with almost no trees on the map the game is starting to lag due to all the deco stuff.

I'm using the latest NatDiv with fix against the trees dying out but it doesn't seem to help. The grass is very aggressive and I have to keep clearing large swaths of land. At least it keeps the fuel count high.

that is decorated.nicely done.

Thanks. The modders sure did an amazing job creating all these deco toys to play with.

Title: Re: Random images from Castle Rock maps

At the moment I have to buy ~10 thousand units of food per year to keep up with demand. I'm selling mutton, smoked fish, leather, wine, mead, herbs, lumber, coke, iron ore, logs, iron and bricks.

The city would have been built up more by now if I didn't have to worry about food. But it's fun and keeps me interested and I have enough time to think on how to develop it further.

I was actuall trying to build a T-junction irrigation canal but the water in those T pieces doesn't flow correctly for what I had in mind.
Title: Re: Random images from Castle Rock maps
Post by: Gatherer on April 02, 2018, 01:25:33 PM
And now a little something about this current game.

The Big City: Castle Rock XII
The idea was (still is) to build a big city supported by smaller towns and villages. There are 10 main city districts planned: 8 residential plus 1 cathedral and 1 railway district. These districts will be separated from other communities with NMC canal on west, south and east side and with irrigation canal on the north side. There will be long and wide avenues and streets separating each district.
The Old City is on the east side across the canal.

Food dilemma:
In the long run I want trading to cover ~15-20% of yearly food needs. I'm not sure if that is feasible though. Just recently I have had a very bad luck with the merchants. For more than a decade there were on average perhaps 4 merchants per year bringing any type of food to my 8 trading posts. And since the merchants come more than once a year per TP you can imagine my frustration. Really, really bad luck. >:( There's too much seed and livestock merchants. >:( What I needed from them I have already purchased (except milk cows but I'm deliberately waiting with this purchase).

If some modder could produce a small standalone savegame compatible mod that disables seed and livestock merchants that would be greatly appreciated. ;)

I admit that some of this food problem is of my own making. :-[ I don't like long inventory lists in my towh halls. And because of this I only buy food that I have seeds for or food that comes from the forests. Seed purchases have stopped more than 80 years ago.

These are the only food items I buy and/or plant:
- apple
- bean
- lettuce
- maple sap
- maple syrup
- game
- honey
- wheat
- carrot
- peas
- tomato
- grape
- fish
- fiddlehead
- cranberry
- corn
- chanterelle
- blueberry
- mushroom
- onion
- pear
- squash
- cabbage
- pumpkin
- turnip
- pepper
- rice
- potato
- roots

Conclusion:
At the moment I need to get the overall food count up. I've started expanding even further southwest and with that the planning for city district expansion has undergone some change and delays. Currently the city and the southern village form L shape and I'm forced to build that empty corner first. This will shorten travel distance for my people and also bring much needed workforce closer to where it is needed.

Your pictures are lovely. That single tree on the sheep pasture is simply irresistible. :)

I guess the no seed from @RedKetchup will work, at least if it's vanilla Tp you're using. I don't know if it's somewhere more official as well, but here it is. http://worldofbanished.com/index.php?topic=2303.msg46919#msg46919

Thanks but I'm not using any vanilla TP's. I have so far: 5 canal TP's, 1 jetty TP from Necora, 1 jetty TP from CC modular pack, 1 large TP from Kid and 1 DS TP from his mining mod.

They don't fit on the canals. The big city is surrounded by canal on three sides and there will be irrigation canal on the fourth side. Some 40-50 tiles north of the irrigation canal is the main river.

Northeastern part of the Big City. I needed more food but any new housing development is now on hold. Those paused buildings will have to wait.

Thanks! It's still a long way to go. I have experienced some crashes while saving so I had to start playing with graphic settings set to medium (I only set them high for screenshots now) and also began to close all UI windows before saving. So far it works.

I've also decided that it is time to purchase some walnut seeds (haven't bought any seeds in almost a century). Hopefully this will allow me to save some precious smoked fish for trading.

@Gatherer , beautiful city!  I particularly like that small hamlet on the southern shore with DS's Bryggen TownHouses.  I like those buildings but they don't go with many of the other available houses I also like.  I need to make some "hamlets" like you did with mostly one style of building.  I have been doing too much of trying to make my whole town match in style, but of course, that can't work with using all the available mods.

I may have reached the limit though. :(  More often than not the game crashes while saving. All graphic settings are set to low; reflections off; filtering bilinear, all other applications closed; internet connection disabled when playing; all update notifications off; restarting pc before every game so nothing unnecessary is being opened...

Planning ahead is severely limited because of crashes.

I will try to continue but I may be forced to shelve this big town and start building small again. I have a 32-bit OS and that means it is limited in RAM usage.

yeah probably that, limited to 3.25GB RAM with mods taking most of it. not enough left for saving.

I'm very happy, that you can go on with this lovely settlement; a whole country with different villages and towns; all in different styles, all beautiful and fitting well to eachother.

Even if I have no talent to build something like this, I know how it feels to have to give up a large settlement you worked on for a long time, just because the computer doesn't play along with you. I suffer with you and cross my fingers, that you find a way to go on a little longer.

Thanks for your support @Nilla and thanks to all the other members but I have decided to shelve this town for now. I have copied all the files and mod load order to USB drive. Perhaps when I buy a new pc with more RAM and 64-bit OS I will continue.

This topic will remain active as I will soon start a new map. Just need to cut down on the number of mods first and reshuffle them a bit. And I need to find a suitable map seed.

So for the last screenshot of Castle Rock XII, here is what should have been...

Just a small update: Today I've started to remove excess mods from the windata folder. Some I've never used and don't intend to, others were obsolete 1.0.4 and 1.0.5 versions. So far I've dumped 39 mods and re-shuffled the others a bit. There was a conflict of not showing a dairyman profession but that was fixed. Right now I'm trying to find a suitable load order position for MegaMod Deco Pack so that I can dump a few more standalone deco mods without losing icons and causing crashes.

Castle Rock XIII

Year 1: Got a nice bend in the river and access to a lake. I start with pepper, squash, pecan, plum and chickens. The last three items will not be used at all. Chickens will be left to die off. Preplanned the NMC Canal. The area between the canal and the river will house the main town.

Year 5: Village is expanding. Slowly building up food stocks, stone and iron ore. RK's Old Blacksmith is invaluable since it can process iron ore to iron.

Are there other differences than the change in mods? It doesnīt look like a smaller map. That could be one thing to make it run a bit longer.

I've cut 43 mods. Should be 44 though since upon starting Castle Rock XIII, I realized NMT 3.0 Multi story housing doesn't fit on NMT 2.0.4 markets. Can't drop it now or else risk losing this town to crash.

MegaMod Deco Pack is a huge beast at ~750MB. It should have been broken apart imo. I only use/will ever use just a tiny fraction of it.

you can still use both, use a 2.0 multilvl when there is a market, and use a 3.0 when the 1st floor is a residence.

Year 11: I've relocated the school and added clay chain. The area north of the future canal has been cleared. With the amount of iron ore collected and many patches still on the ground I reckon there will be no need for mining for at least 30-40 years.

Just wanted to say that I've loved looking through all these images and seeing how your previous city grew and your changes for this new one. I've spend the last year playing without any of the main tech progression options - avoiding large-scale manufacture, anything that needs 'building supplies', and even minimising roads and anything in a straight line! I've kept small communities jumbled around local village-level production. So looking at your images was a huge reminder of all the different things this game can do! I actually just started a new game last night (my previous personal challenge became unplayable) and while i've started with my typical non-linear design I think I might change it up! Maybe once I start trading and get some seeds I'll change my hunter-gather community into a planned urban centre ;)  Thanks for sharing.

I'm glad you like my pics @BlueFireChelle . I always try to cut down on grid building but then OCD kicks in and most planning goes straight to hell.

Even with the latest version of Natural Diversity the trees are still dying out. I suspect it might be because of EB's OrchardELTreesOverride Mod. Anyone else have some other theory?
Title: Re: Random images from Castle Rock maps
Post by: brads3 on May 19, 2018, 07:22:39 AM
doubt it is caused by EB's mod. there was talk of this issue when you get near 100 years.you can check KEVIN's logs on the CC NAT DIV page.should be near the last page. over abundance of blueberry and trees dying off was noted. i use the immortal tree mod so they aren't suppose to die.you can add the new dense forest mod with it. i have not jad that issue with the original ND mod using the immortal tree with the pine mod.
Title: Re: Random images from Castle Rock maps
Post by: Voeille on May 19, 2018, 07:57:42 AM
I donít think you need immortal trees if you decide to use my dense forests. I set the trees to live 64 years instead of 5 after maturing, and they reseed fast enough to naturally create a maximum density forest (which should be reached after 10-15 years I think). For all Iíve noticed it affects orchards too, Iím 32 years in now, and none of my pear and chestnut trees have fallen yet.

Then I don't know what could it be. I have the latest ND mod with the fix against trees dying out. The same happened on my previous map. The only mods higher than ND that have to do with trees are EB's orchard override and Pine Set.

I'm not using the North.

Luckily I don't have a log shortage in my current town. There are six forest nodes at the moment producing more than I need. And I'm planning to place at least two more in the future.

Smoked fish made by Tom's smoking shed cannot be sold at all. The worker UI window keeps saying he's working but the station has no materials sign on top. There is no mead option so I can't sell that either. So far I've been selling fur and logs. Log count goes down real fast so you need a high log production. But the coins accumulate fast and in great numbers. They're valued at 1 but you can get many thousands per year. The coins follow a textile limit.

@RedKetchup

Any chance you could upgrade this little mod to 1.0.7. with the new flags, perhaps changing the coins to follow Custom6 (precious), adding mead as an export item and making smoked fish universally compatible if possible? Oh, and fixing the ghosted railway bridge to sit on the centre of tile?

No pressure though. ;D ;)

One of my next plans is to remove the potato field and replace it with two of Kid's greenhouses to grow turnips. I will also relocate DS glassmaker and RK old blacksmith to the south of the canal. DS fishing dock will be moved across the river and placed on the tip of that small peninsula. And I'll probably squeeze a small cemetery and a mini forester on the emptied space.

Amazing! How big is your town now? Any lags?

Year 98:

711 citizens living in Castle Rock XIII at the moment. The game lags a bit due to all the deco stuff. I always play at 2x speed. For an unrelated test I let it run at 10x for a couple of years. Game speed seemed the same.

Some statistics:

I love your town, @Gatherer !  It's so carefully and beautifully laid out. It's made me realise how mundane and dull my towns look and made me vow to try harder with the aesthetics.  Do you add the decorative items as you go along or do you build a specific area first and then go back and add the deco?

I've always found much the same thing. At some point around 6-700 citizens 10X and 5X start to look much alike, though sometimes I think that 5X actually works better because the game isn't trying to run at 10X.

I mostly build the area first or at least place down paused buildings and then add deco stuff. As you can see from the pictures there are also built up areas still lacking decorations after several decades.

Year 103:

I've had some problems placing the quay pieces but in the end I think it turned out well. Pieces from Kid's Washing Mod will fill the area between the school and the houses.

Year 106:

I wish to extend the railway to the right between the river and the lake and then to the northeast into the mountains using a deco tunnel entrance.

DS Jetty hospital is built in the western village. I've decided it is time to expand to the western shore of this lake and build a half jetty-half land village there. With enough workforce I will then start to mine for iron ore and coal. And finally start to produce and use steel tools.

I'm undecided whether to build the colourful DS Bryggen houses or the grey and brownish versions on the land part of the village.

I love the Bryggen houses and have tried to use them in a city builder aspect, to make a tight medieval kind of town, that Bergen is in real. There's more of these kind of houses behind the famous Bryggen front of Bergen, with narrow streets and courtyards. But I haven't really succeeded. So please use the Bryggen houses. I would very much like to see, how an expert like you deal with them. Besides, I find the other grayish houses more suitable as raw houses in an industrial/mining settlement, but of course, I guess, that someone like you can make something beautiful out of them, too. :)

@Nilla, you mentioned Bergen? Are you from near there? I only ask because up until  recently I worked for Rolls Royce and we had a large plant in Bergen that I had to speak with frequently so I got to know several very nice people from there.  Small world!
