Patroon's Report:
Our first settlers finally arrived from New Amsterdam, but it was not at all what we were expecting.

My father personally escorted the widow Montinee Jacobs and her three children to the colony. We were instructed to cease all other work and build for her a new home. We constructed a tri-level house on the bank of the river near the fishing wharf. Montinee's daughter Denisha took claim of the ground level unit, while the widow and sons Stevin and Garrish claimed the second floor. Galentice Eikenboom, who oversaw the construction apprenticing under Callison, was granted the top level unit.

The new receiving house was completed on the eastern shore. The surprise housing demand delayed the start of construction of our third bridge, but it should be completed shortly into the new year.

With the arrival of coal, Ernice Carman has been creating steel tools for us to use. They are much more durable than the iron tools we've been using. We'll need to acquire more coal to continue production. It's possible that some exists under the hills just east of town.

Father is impressed with the town's progress. 5 more children will start school this year. We've cleared more crop and orchard land east of the town. We'll continue preparing land. The work mobbing lots of land and flattening hills was a great success in our experiment on the other side of the river. Once we have a few more people, we will attempt to flatten the hill just north of the market.

Patroon's Report:
English pigs have sacked New Amsterdam. I have not heard from my father any updates, but one of the boats we received mentioned a counter-attack directly on London. We do not know what, if any, supplies are needed or wanted, but we stand at the ready to dispatch food, resources and if need be, men to aid in relief.  We have also let travelers know that we would welcome as many refugees as we could here. We have resources to support 150 people, and plenty of room for housing and additional crops needed to continue to feed them.

We have begun clearing the center island. It has not yet been decided what will be built there. It does not yet even have a name.

We will continue to clear land and amass resources in preparation of what may come.

The Great Bend of the North River. This is where the Esopus Creek joins the North River, which makes a 180 degree bend around an island. The bend is located just west of the main settlement, and is considered by the locals an ideal place to relax or picnic.

Patroon's Report:
A greater war in all of northern Europe seems inevitable. A Dutch force set out to attack London itself in the spring of 1665, but before they could advance on the city, a great plague ran rampant and then much of London was ablaze in a great fire.

New Amsterdam itself is recovering from the attack in 1664. We have yet to receive any refugees.

We have deduced that the great hill just east of town does contain coal. In that area, we are going to build a mine, a bank barn and a root cellar. Another wave of students should graduate this year, bolstering our labor force. We will also be clearing more land north of the town hall and market. We are adding

Patroon's Report:
Another war rages with England, but the tides are in our favor. Our master shipwrights can produce 7 ships for every 1 the English launch. Our masters of sail control the North Sea. Skirmishes continue in and around New Amsterdam, but we still maintain control.

We continue to clear land, and our storage expansion on the eastern hill continues. Another wave of students should graduate this year, bolstering our labor force. We stand ready to receive refugees and new settlers looking for a better life here in Esopus. The town leaders and I have been making preliminary plans to expand the role of government. While I have enjoyed vast success here as governor, things are growing beyond my ability to effectively govern alone.

Patroon's Report:
Another war with England has come to an end, but this one with harrowing news. To keep their territories in the Carribean from the English, the Dutch have agreed to relinquish possession of New Netherland to them. We may have 'won' the war, but this certainly doesn't feel like victory.

We do not have word of a timetable for our turnover to English rule. The new English governor has yet to announce any plans outside of renaming the colony to New York. Though there is clamor from some in the community to organize a rebellion, there has been no indication that life in Esopus would be drastically affected. I will wait until after further discussions with other area leaders to make further plans.

Refugees from New Amsterdam arrive in Esopus

torgonius

1669
Patroon's Report:
New Amsterdam is now officially New York. Our town is still Esopus, and our people still nominally 'free'. We accepted a wave of refugees from New York. All indications from Governor Lovelace are that we will continue to be autonomous, free of involvement from Engish interlopers so long as we are respectful that we now live in English territory. He calls it 'Freedom of Conscience'. Lovelace is a civilian and had moved from the Virginia colony. He is seeking to expand the export base of the area and seems to value Dutch business acumen. We will continue to grow the colony, accept new settlers and after the census in 1670, form a new government, where I will continue as Mayor and the town will elect a council of leading men.

Patroon's Report:
This is my last report as Patroon of Esopus. The colony continues to grow. We have been granted exclusive ownership of the land on both sides of the North River. New York continues to grow, and they'd like more food from the northern outposts to fuel their expansion.

At the end of this year, I have commissioned another census of our people, livestock and goods. Our initial cave into the eastern hill has been lengthened and widened, and soon will be a full-fledged tunnel.

Mayor's Report:
We have now called this shore of the North river home for twenty years, for most of us, half our lives. We have more than doubled the number of homes. We are self-sufficient in every way, and growing in both useable land and population every year.

Our new government has taken form. I have been appointed Mayor for life, with any successors to be voted into office by the educated men of the town.  Ishaad Bakker leads the Food and Agricultural committee. Callison Fortuin leads the Building and Planning Committee. Andro Haak leads the Industry and Exports committee. As the town continues to grow, we will divide the duties and enlarge the council. We have decided that to be on the council, or mayor, one has to be a native of the town either by founding or birth, have completed their education, and attained the age of 20 at the time of election.

Elections will be held for each seat starting in four years' time, when the Industry and Exports seat will become available. Building and Planning will be the year following, and Food and Agricultural the third year. Should any member expire while in office, a special election will be held to complete that seat's term.

The census was completed. We now number 66 souls and 27 sheep. Two more children are expected mid-year in addition to any new families that join us.

We now have more than double the food we consumed last year in storage. A stone quarry and iron mine will be needed soon as the local surface deposits are nearly exhausted.

No construction is yet slated for this year, as we will devote it to expanding our store of ready resources.

Relations with the British remain cordial, but I'm not sure either side fully trusts the other yet.

Mayor's Report:
4 new familes totaling 15 people settled with us last year, bringing us to 53 adults in town. Expansion continues with the construction of new houses. The plans for the quarry have been finalized.

There are many new babies expected this year, with at least 8 of the women already showing and expecting birth in the first part of the year. Sustained peace and growth and a stable environment are good for things of that nature.

Reserves of food and supplies remain strong, but a lack of stone and iron are concerning. We will double our efforts to acquire more as we continue to clear land.

Mayor's Report:
There are rumors that a Dutch force is mobilizing to re-take New Netherland from the British. I pray that they are either quickly successful, or do not exist at all. The development of the town is ripe for accelerated expansion. The last merchant to visit took our order for chickens, cows, and many different seeds. When he returns, we will be able to develop a true cosmopolitan town with many goods. We have already acquire strawberry and peach seeds and the new crops are being planted at first thaw. A new grain silo is going to be built in the west to accommodate larger harvests.

Patroon's Report:
Another war with the English. A fleet of Dutch ships recaptured New Amsterdam last year. Word is that the English can't afford to keep up the fight much longer. We took in a group of 12 refugees from New Amsterdam last year, bringing us to 63 adults to begin 1674. Esopus remains safely away from the conflict, for now.

Our stone quarry should be completed after first thaw. We've also planned for a new, larger chapel, school and cemetery to be built near the market and town hall. The clearing of land north of the market continues as we expand away from the North River.

Mayor's Report:
Once again, we have peace with the British, and once again we find that we are in British territory. Our navy won the war and captured many lands in the south. To keep them, the Treaty of Westminster called for New Netherland to become New York, a colony of the British Empire.

We have a new governor, Sir Edmond Andros. He has declared that we will be allowed to remain who we are, without fear of reprisal, Peace is at hand, and with that, I plan to aggressively expand the territorial holdings of Esopus.

First, though, Callison has designed a new official residence for the holder of the office of Mayor. It will be adjacent to the Town Hall and market. It will be his prototype for more grand residences in the future. We also need to build a new school building to accommodate all our children as they learn their way to prosperity.

We've also begun planning a second port, and we may be receiving one of the merchant navy's whaling vessels, too.
