Chapter 7

What wasn't cute was the piles of plant debris and animal waste piling up around town.  The farmers complained about the animal waste and the herders complained about the plant debris.  The only good thing about the early spring snowfall was that it covered up both messes and everything looked fresh and clean.  We built a cleaning shed by the 2 farmyards to clean up the plant debris and we built another one by the goats and our oxen to clean up after the animals.  It was not that far to go to clean the sheep shed.  The farmers said fresh animal waste can't be put in the garden, it would damage the plants.  It had to be aged.  We built a compost bin behind the goat shed where both plant debris and animal waste could be composted.  We built a garden shed over by the pig shed to store the finished compost.  We could build a greenhouse next to it to grow more potatoes for the pigs.

Our supply of potatoes was running low, we had been considering another farmyard to grow more.  Now we hoped the gatherer that was built across the river would find enough roots for the pigs and wild oats for the sheep among the trees.  Wool production dropped off several times when the sheep weren't getting enough food.  The goats had plenty of corn.   An herbalist and a hunter with storage was also built on the other side of the river.  All three would be working  behind and to the west of the fort area where deer had been sighted but no bears.   The bears were sighted near the east gate.

Chapter 8

With the bears so close again, there would soon be more furs.  A fort coat maker near the watch tower would make warm coats from the fur.  Since most of the workers in that area spent a lot of time outside, a Market Stew kettle was set up so they could stop to warm up by the fire and have a bowl of soup several times during their work day.  A grow house was built close by to grow more potatoes for the stew pot and to feed the pigs.  They were used to a diet of potatoes, roots could go in the stew pot.

The fort hunter got not only deer but game birds as well among the trees.  Emma, the tailor by the trading post, said she could make warm coats with flax and down now.  A small market roaster was set up nearby to roast the game.  We needed to keep an eye on our firewood supplies now that we had 2 roasters and a stew kettle.  The new farmyard for corn and potatoes over by the compost bin would supply a bit more firewood.

Early in the year fisherboy, Gloriano, was upset to learn the rival Lavares became the fort tailor making fur coats, and he moved in with Hatti.  They were Grizzly Gulch's first new couple and they were both from farm families. The newlyweds had their first child before the end of the year.

Chapter 9

In early spring of year 9 the general goods merchant returned and asked us if we would take a cow and 2 calves off his hands.  Someone did not have enough trade goods for all the milk cows they ordered and he was stuck not only with the cow but with the 2 calves she had.  Space was limited inside the fort walls now but we agreed to take them.  We built a cow shed by the new farmyard, there was more corn now to feed the animals.  The cows could be fed the same as the goats, corn, wild oats, or grass.  One of the herders would care for the cows and of course the farmer was not thrilled with having cows and a herder next door.

That farmyard was also giving us more eggs, and potatoes to feed the pigs.  It was suggested that we cut some of the pork in strips and smoke it to make bacon to go with those eggs.  A smokery shed was built across from the pig shed.  Everyone in town liked the bacon as much as they all liked the goat cheese, fresh vegetables, the roast meat, and the stew.

Our town had 52 citizens, 29 adults, 9 students, and 14 young children.  There would soon be students finishing school and more couples pairing up.  Chances are those couples would not be made up of 2 farmers or 2 herders but one of each.   My concern was for those young couples.  It was hard enough starting out together in these difficult times but it shouldn't be made harder by parents that don't get along.  I would have something to say at the next Grizzly Gulch town meeting.

Chapter 10

Drake agreed with me that Grizzly Gulch needed a new town hall of records and we picked a spot by the bridge that was equal distance between the 2 sides of town.  It was finished in autumn and we called a special town meeting.

I began by telling everyone how good the town was doing and that everyone in town was responsible for its success. Everyone.  I described what it was like when we arrived here by covered wagon, weary traveler, finding little more than 2 run down shacks and a dilapidated old barn.  We now have 18 homes, a school, town hall, a grow house, farmyards, a sheep shed, a goat shed, a cow shed, and a pig shed.  We have a dairy shed, tailor shed, and a bacon smokery shed.   We have a large and a small roaster and a soup kettle.  In one way or another everyone in town, including every farmer and herder, have contributed to these things and to the fact that we are 100% happy and healthy.  I then told the legend of the Three Sisters that the Natives told us, and I said we were all helping each other and it was okay to be different.  Grizzly Gulch has 52 citizens and we would soon have more new couples, we would have more reasons to get along.
