Tried Tropico 4 too and I might have liked it if I had played it out a bit with a bit of patience, but I didn't like the slow pace of the start and I didn't like the UI of the game.... Played 30 mins and quit it.
Might try out Tropico 5 instead, but I really need to get myself a decent graphics card before I give up on a lot of these games !!

@nmid what card are you using now?  I was using a 9800GTX+ and really wanted to upgrade. I settled on a GTX750 rather than getting carried away with a top end card.  The GTX750 is a low power consumption card that performs quite well.  You don't need the extra power connectors these newer cards require and it is VERY quiet!

Obviously, I play all my games on low video settings.
I'm sure I'm missing out a lot of skyrim's fun, but oh well.
 
Haven't ever tried or researched an external graphics card, but I am going to check it out.

Ah, a laptop. Well you are probably stuck then unless that model laptop supports a video card. There are a few that can take specially made video cards that are designed for laptops.

I thought long and hard before commenting about Tropico 5 (T5, 2014) because got a bad taste for this game.

Before playing 'T5' I played Imperium Romanum (IR, 2008), Grand Ages Rome (GAR, 2010) and Tropico 4 (T4, 2011) and been a fan of Haemimont Games. So to pay a high price (US$39.90) for T5. My opinion may disappoint other people in Forum. But I did not like at T5.

TT5 was created with fewer options than T4 and limiting options strategies 1 or 2 ways to complete quests at a level that was similar Imperium Romanum and that was better (much better) in Grand Ages Rome. Made it worse, kicked the advances won before. Example, the soldiers became retarded and get lost walking blocks to find combat. Can take so that the fight just before they arrived. It was so in the IR and fixed in GAR.

After that, they left aside the recipe and lost the line of evolution of these games. T4 had problems. Some created by DLCs. The developers are slow to release patches. In short, I lost the desire to play T4 and came back after it was fixed some problems. I finished the game and waited for T5. I bought, played a few hours and I left. I tried again after the patches and I left again. For me T4 is better and more fun than T5.

If I can recommend some game of the Haemimont Games I will speak the best of them is GAR with Reign of Augustus expansion. It's the best without considering some recent advancement in graphics or modern graphic privilege. It's still the best in strategy and is a good building cities. This is my opinion.

I have played Tropico since the original, though I took a miss on the stupid pirate one after playing the demo. I really enjoyed the original and still play it on DOSBox every so often. I think that 4 was probably the best, though it wasn't really much of an advance on 3. On the original everyone walked everywhere (as in Banished) and building could take forever, so introducing cars was a help. Much of the DLC was just dumb, though, and didn't add to the gameplay (just my opinion, of course). So when Steam put 5 on sale awhile back I bought it and set out. I should say that I tend to play as an elected socialist whose primary concern is maintaining broad support and not angering either superpower while making enough on exports to keep a high level of prosperity. I found the selection of traits for El Presidente more limited than in 4. There is now a dynasty with new members of your family popping up every now and again, though I've not yet figured out why. What is really new in 5 is the eras and the need for research. Each era has a slightly different flavor and needs a somewhat different strategy, which is good. The transition from one era to the next can be difficult. At first I didn't realize that the end of the world wars era meant that somebody was going to invade and I would have to defeat them. Since I had always played to avoid invasions or rebellion, it took awhile to learn how to get my rather inept troops to repel an invasion. We finally made it (Though seriously, if the Germans, Japanese, Americans or Brits had decided to invade a small island republic . . . ?). As to research, it really makes no sense that a small island republic would not just borrow technology from others, but I suppose some mechanism is necessary to control how you get ready for an era change. It wasn't a huge problem--just one more thing that El Presidente had to pay for. Once I was in the Cold War era it seemed pretty much like 4 with one or two new buildings. I lost interest before I made the modern era. I might go back to it should I ever tire of Banished, though with all the mods coming out that seems less likely than ever.

Oh, I almost forgot, the graphics for buildings are different and you now have to plop the whole farm and not just the buildings. Also mines are in some sort of stage-setting cave which just looks weird.

The Tropico series has a history of remarkable irrelevance... - Tropico 3 IMHO was the only true update to the original Tropico (with Paradise Island), and that was in the graphics department. After I´ve bought Tropico 4 which appeared so strangely shortly after part 3, I almost felt ripped off... Everything that followed Tropico 3 was hardly more than (slight) varieties of the ever-same, with something additional given here while something else cancelled out... The music got worse bit by bit, the game became more and more "casual". The humor, which was refreshening in the first part, later became much too arty and ridiculous with every next part etc... I´d still prefer Tropico 1 if the graphics had matured a little better, mostly because of the balancing (and the music). Part 4 is still the best of the newer ones, and the only thing that the (otherwise quite lame) 5th part has for itself are mods. As die-hard Tropico-fan, I gave up after the 5th part. Shame...
