Chapter 6

The Medicine Man found wild tobacco growing in the small hunting grounds.  Seeds were collected and in early spring of year 6 a small patch of tobacco was planted.

To insure that we had enough wild foods gathered before they disappeared in late autumn, we built a gatherer's hut.  We women made plenty of baskets for anyone who wanted to help gather or who needed one for their teepees.

The tobacco grew well, we seemed to be getting more rain here on the prairie in the last few years.  A special fire tent was built with racks to dry the tobacco leaves.  Men could gather round the fire and smoke the pipe.  It was White Buffalo Calf Woman who first brought the Sacred Pipe to our people, it was a gift from the Great Spirit.  She taught our people how to pray for the earth and for all living things and to give thank for all the we receive.  The smoke from the pipe would carry the prayers to the Great Spirit.

The fishing party went out again that autumn and there were more roots, mushrooms, and onions.  There were plenty of berries for the young children just learning to feed themselves to pick up from their small wooden bowls to eat.   A small herd of young buffalo lingered near the gatherer's hut.  Another herd was sighted across the river.

@brads3 That is a very good point, perhaps tobacco should be material rather than textile, we will call that to @kid1293 attention.  The tobacco is only in the small patch - no crop to plant in a field.  This mod represents the tribes of the plains, they were not farmers on the prairie, small patch of corn if anything. They were gatherers and hunters of buffalo.  They probably thought of the tobacco more like a herb than anything else.  The designing part of mod is done, there is no trading post - to be accurate, it would be the same as in Kid Forest Trader mod.  There are some deco teepees though.  :)

@brads3 - I keep the tobacco as textile for now. No major impact.
It is a hard plant to put in a category. It should be a herb maybe.
But then I get all non-smokers telling me it is not healthy :)

Chapter 7

Upon further investigation our scout discovered there were 2  larger herds of buffalo.  One was in the far north beyond the stream and the lake, and likely to stay there.  The other herd was across the river not far from where the young herd was sighted in late autumn of the previous year.  Tracks in the snow indicated that the large older herd had crossed the river from the area south of our forester.  In early spring of year 7, Thunder Hawk said it was time we hunt buffalo.

The large herd that crosses the river was too close to our village, it needed thinning out.  We would build a hunting camp near the area that the herd was seen grazing.  Another herd was sighted to the east.  It would take a while to clear an area and take building materials across the stone bridge to the chosen camp site.  We did not have many available workers and at present we only had 1 hunter.  We would build a  hunter teepee and 2 other teepees to house a hunting party when needed.

It was autumn before the buffalo came within range of our hunter.  We had bison meat and leather.   In anticipation of the hunt, a large campfire was built with a rotatable spit.  Benches were built around the fire spit for those already gathering for the first taste of the roasting meat.  It smelled delicious.  When the meat was thoroughly roasted everyone was free to cut off a piece to sample or take home.  They did not have to wait for the meat to be removed from the spit and cut.

Our diet had greatly improved from the early days when we first arrived.  We now had bison meat, roast meat, rabbit meat, game, and fish.  We raised corn, squash, and beans, and gathered roots, onions, mushrooms, berries, cranberries, chestnuts, and wild honey.  We had much to thank the Great Spirit for.

Chapter 8

So, weary travelers, I have told you all there is to tell about our Native Village and its history.  There is time for a quick tour before you must leave.  You saw our hunting camp across the river when you arrived.  There are only buffalo here but our hunter keeps an eye out for deer, bear, and wild boar just in case any ventured near.  And you saw our needleworks and tool maker on the way to the Fire Tent to smoke the peace pipe filled with tobacco leaves from our small patch.  You saw the canoes going out at sunset from the fisherman pier to spear fish.  Look there, there are some turkeys and rabbits in our small hunting grounds.  And here, next to the chief's hut, is the Wise Elder tent where they teach the Legends and Old Ways to the children.  Thunder Hawk was pleased to have a totem pole built in his honor.  To the west is the sacred Sweat Lodge, our spiritual gathering place.  The small huts are for our Medicine Man and gatherer.

Now it is time for you to go, supplies have been loaded onto your wagons.  If you go back the way you came and then go west after you cross the big river, you will soon come to the Prairie Homestead of your people.  Look at the wild sunflower, it is called compass plant.  The big lower leaves will always face north and south, even at midday and on cloudy days, you will know which direction you are going.  The prairie is beautiful in autumn and the weather is pleasant for travel.  You will find the path you are meant to follow.  Go in peace, weary travelers, go in peace.
