Possible shutdown of World of Banished
« on: December 02, 2020, 02:55:51 AM »
Hi All

I read with sadness @The Big Chihuahua post (http://worldofbanished.com/index.php?topic=3884.0) about closing down the site and I was in the same situation back in 2018 with my own website (www.citybuilders.com) it didn't have any forums and it was mainly hosting the official SimCity3 and SimCity4 files that were deleted when Maxis games sold out to EA Games and the official game sites were closed down, I had also been working on a project over quite a few years to index the file exchanges of the various community websites.

I ended up having discussions with the administration staff over at the Simtropolis website, who agreed to let me transfer the contents of my site over Simtropolis

https://community.simtropolis.com/

so ended up extending my site hosting for a short period of time while the files, documents, indexes, pictures, etc were all transferred over to Simtropolis .... am know as catty-cb there

Links to some of the places my stuff ended up

https://community.simtropolis.com/files/category/42-sc3k-maxis-files/
https://community.simtropolis.com/sc4-maxis-files/

https://community.simtropolis.com/omnibus/simcity-4/reference/omnibus-sitemap-draft-only-r571/

Something that exists over at Simtropolis is the ability to have your own mini-site, so all the stuff that didn't fit anywhere else ended in my own mini-site (clubs), the beauty of which I don't have to worry about maintaining it, or backing it up and the site has plenty of administrators and moderators that sort out any problems before they start

https://community.simtropolis.com/clubs/26-city-builders-website/

Since my site was merged into Simtropolis, I have volunteered to upload the files belonging to an old SimCity 2000 and SimCity 3000 websites, that both officially ceased to exist last month.

https://community.simtropolis.com/clubs/30-simcity-2000-resource-page/

https://community.simtropolis.com/clubs/36-simcity-3000-resource-page/

Another SimCity site that has also been shutdown and now has its own club is

https://community.simtropolis.com/clubs/27-simcity-polska-organization/

Even other games are welcome

https://community.simtropolis.com/clubs/33-newcity/

Banished does have its own topic over there

https://community.simtropolis.com/forums/topic/55871-banished/

So maybe its worth thinking about as an alternative to shutting down or someone volunteering to take over the site.

This is seriously sad, troubling news about World of Banished maybe being gone forever.  It would be too terrible!   :'(   There is so much helpful information here, not to mention all the mods and mods in progress.  It is a calamity!

It would be truly sad to lose this wonderful site, hopefully someone will take over, but if not this would be a good alternative, thank you for bringing it to our attention @catty-cb

Sad news. I hope, too that something will come up to save the site.

This site has become my second home. It is not the loss of World of Banished that would really hurt. It is those that make the mods, show their art, provide assistance, and give tips and tricks that will really be a loss. My favorite forum is the Village Blogs. My god the art work that is shown there is fantastic. With that art work comes way to use mods to their best advantage, and of course showcasing new mods while in testing. Being able sometimes to pull a beta version of a mod allows others to give their opinions which may cause the mod to be changed with additional options or even new mods in the same vein.

I will truly miss this site and all that post here.

Not unlike the loss of a very close and dear friend. When that last day arrives I know that tears will fall on my keyboard, many tears.

@The Big Chihuahua  thank you for all of the work and effort you have put into this site. There is nothing that compares that I have found. You created a masterpiece. It will long be remembered.

It looks like there maybe people willing to step in and takeover from  @The Big Chihuahua  see this topic

http://worldofbanished.com/index.php?topic=3888.0

Which would be great news if it happens

I have since talked to one of the senior administration staff over at Simtropolis and he says that while there is no way of saving the forums as Simtropolis and WOB use different site software, we are more than welcome to save everything else over to Simtropolis.

Something that has come up over at Simtropolis as we have lost a number of SimCity community sites so are unfortunately getting quite a bit of practice at it, when the sites go down the people who have been uploading files into their file exchanges aren't always aware its happened till someone tracks them down to see if they

A - still have copies of their files; and
B - are ok with them being re-hosted at Simtropolis

So with that in mind am just going to add some TAGS to the bottom of this post of all the modders that have added files to the WOB downloads area.

As others have said I too would not like to lose this forum. I visit daily and it is one of the most friendly and polite forums I've ever been a member of. I hope some solution can be found to keep it going.
There's never enough deco stuff!!!

We have a lot of hope now for our favorite place to continue but I strongly recommend saving the link or bookmarking the above mentioned site.  If WOB site is saved it may possibly be down during transition and the forum there or at Nexus would be a good place to keep in touch and have news of progress posted.

If worse comes to worse- the Simtropolis club sounds like a good idea and there is the City Journal section where I believe we could continue blogs and village images.  :)

Yes they also have a picture gallery where people can upload their pictures, am still hoping this gets sorted out before it comes to that as while I have been a long-time member of Simtropolis for about 12-13 years now, WOB holds a special place in my heart and I would hate to see it disappear.
