Typical Misapprehension About The Cloud
« on: December 07, 2014, 06:06:54 AM »
I am quoting this from an online article I read this morning, on digitizing your family photos.

"Sign up for a service like <company name deleted by me> that stores your files in the cloud online safe from fire, theft or flood."

The operative word for fire and flood is "safer", and "theft" doesn't belong in that sentence at all.

It would be nice if vicarious outfits like that could just be <deleted>.

I have an imgur account (paid) on which I store photos that I link to other sites.  That and a minor use of dropbox which hasn't been active for months are the only "cloud" services I employ.

Beware of free services.  Someone benefits besides yourself.  These things cost money so you need to know who benefits especially if you have to give personal data to get the account.

I consider these things an abuse of the Internet.
