@Paeng: I have some of your stuff on STEX volume 4, but I haven't tried any of it yet.

You probably never played Creatures, Creatures 2, or Startopia, but if you did, then you probably used my stuff.  My other contributions were in RPG games (TES and NWN).  I did have a lot of stuff for the original Sims, but I took those down when I started getting too many e-mails asking how to make them work for the later versions.  They didn't, and I said so on the website, and they couldn't be made to work.  Go away.  Although I just said, "sorry, they won't work".  I didn't actually say "go away".   ;D

Hmmm. We have experienced modders here. Can't get that Banished mod kit fast enough!

This is good news! Look forward to seeing what you guys come up with for Banished (assuming you do)! My issue with mods is just trying to figure out who are the creators to be trusted or not. I did not mod or use CC in any game until TS2 and had such a bad time with it I swore off them completely. If EA could make a Sims game that didn't need mods just to function properly, maybe I would have stuck to that resolution.  ::)

What they did to SimCity series is a total disgrace. I was able to play SimCity for 30 minutes last week and was shaking my head in disbelieve later. It feels like Idiocracy arrived 500 years too soon.

Acrually what happened for me afterwards was that I loaded SimCity 3000 after 10 years and had loads of fun. And then I loaded SimCity 4 also after who knows how many years and in all seriousness it is better game then SimCity 5, which is just dumbed down graphics fest for Walmart shoppers for last profit pump before the series is retired.

To me it's the other way around. After playing around with SimCity 2013, unmodded SimCity 4 feels like the dumb down version of SimCity 2013. I cannot play it anymore, with the meh graphics, gridlocked design and fake cars and pedestrians.

I actually loved what they intended to do with the new SimCity, but hate how it turned out. A lot of ideas were good in my opinion, but implementation was horrible. The programming is terrible, making it impossible for them to create a serious city size, the marketing was dreadful, the beta testing was useless, the server infrastructure was cheap and the initial patches came too late. The only design decision that was bad from the beginning was the always online. All in all, the city size is still a game killler for me, making it boring to play.

I know I might be the only one thinking this way. :D

Well, after waiting for a fresh Simcity for almost a dozen years - when I saw what they came up with I was just terribly, terribly disappointed... it's so... plastic dreadful... :-(

I need to ask though - why would one play vanilla SC4? I mean the "meh graphics, gridlocked design and fake cars" are long since a thing of the past...  :)

It was just for comparing unmodded with unmodded. But the meh graphics still exist if you ask me, compared to the new SimCity or other modern games. And the grid as well. And I like the more or less what you see is what is there approach with agents in SimCity 2013. In SimCity 4 the cars are just decoration for the underlying statistics.

I can imagine the disappointment. I'm pretty disappointed about it too, just maybe for different reasons. :)

Edit: modern graphics are a thing for me. I can't really play any real old game nowadays, because I'm spoiled (or is it spoilt ??) with modern graphics. I also dislike most Flash games and mobile games for this reason. So for me no SC4, Caesar, Gnomoria, etc.

I know this a SimCity thread, but I've had a similar experience with recent versions of long-established games.  I've played the X-universe series of games for many years, and until the most recent release, I've seen definite improvement every time a new version comes out.  However, like @Paeng with SimCity, the most recent release, after quite a few years of nothing new, has been a huge disappointment.  It's almost as if the developers decided to make a whole new game, with only the title in common with prior versions.  The end result is a game that is no longer fun because it has done away with all the features that made the game so successful to begin with.

I've seen similar shifts in a number of games, and I have to wonder why.  It sounds like SimCity can be added to the list of games that are in this category.

That sums it up precisely. Yep, add SC2013 to that category  :)

@Kaldir -
Just friendly contest, okay? I can't help being a diehard SC fan  ;)
But I'd pick this over sc2013 any day...

On a different note -
Is it just me or is "Quote" somehow disabled here? Makes... well, quoting  :)  kinda cumbersome...

Sadly i agree with salamander (quoting is broke for me as well).

There is a niche product that gets picked by enthusiasts like first instances of Simcity, brand grows, few versions of game get released, each beter than the one before. But then someone gets the idea of "appealing to masses" and end result is horrible. Previous instances of SimCity had sales volume of 200-300% higher than SimCity 2013 disaster, where i am pretty sure that they were expecting massive success with appealing to facebook instant graticifaction masses, while backstabbing fan base with product that was stripped down of everything that defined previous versions so that they might get 12 year olds on ship. I just hope that king of grand strategy genre Hearts of Iron doesnt get the same fate, judging from developer diaries it looks promising.

I say if @Kaldir would rather play the latest version, well, it's his (I'm assuming?) time and his hobby. So far it is not something I'd do, but that's me. A couple of years ago I built a new computer and decided to load SC 4 from scratch again. I'm not sure I'd play vanilla either, but after downloading things like NAM and CAM and SPAM SC4 is a whole different experience. The custom content community is what makes the game continue to be fun and a challenge. There's always some new idea to try out in the next city.

Last night after our train club annual meeting (I'm the president, so I get to preside  :'(  ) we got to talking about which RR Tycoon was the best. We all agreed it was 2, not 3. Don't get me wrong, 3 had some good stuff in it, but they made some changes that made certain scenarios unplayable. And then what could have been RRT 4 ended up being less than RRT 1, but with nice graphics. I am a gameplay over graphics kind of guy.

On an unrelated note: I can't quote either. I'm going to start a thread under Forum Suggestions (in All the Rest) to see what The Big Chihuahua has to say.

Quoting on the post itself is broken indeed, but it works if you press the Reply button first. There you can insert quotes.

Let's call it an exchange of ideas between diehard SC fans. I feel no need to 'win' or 'lose' (hopefully this is the correct spelling  8) ). So I'll give you a few images I like better than yours. :P

A few night shots because you did that as well:

Cool, thanks!

.................

Nice shots... SC2013 night-scenes look pretty cool indeed... unfortunately, the day-shots don't keep the pace...  :)

Okay, one more in day/night - themed after the "Three Sisters" in Moscow -

Impressive building, that one. I like the smaller buildings more though, which might explain why I don't hate the new SimCity that much. :D

One quick daylight picture I found on my disk just now:

Is that the "Germany" Expansion Pack?

Well, all told, I'm more one of the "tree hugger" faction  ;D - so my main themes are really rural settings and nature -

see this one full size for the quite impressive ground textures and flora...
