Title: Abandoned - Stockyards - Story 81
Post by: Abandoned on May 31, 2022, 06:24:42 AM
Intro

This is the 81st story in the Smallville Series and tells the tale of 8 families who came from Riverboat Junction (story 34) to raise livestock for the river boatmen.  It is year 65 SVT.  Worsening weather conditions and an increase in the number of natural disasters, combined with a growing need as the world's population increased, have caused shortages of livestock and textiles worldwide.  The Animal Refuge (story 9) and farm families helped provided some livestock and textiles by trading with the river boatman.  Riverboat Junction's livestock was now only enough to support its own overcrowded population.  The new Stockyards are located just north of Riverboat Junction in the southcentral part of the World Map.

Chapter 1

Yes, weary traveler, Riverboat Junction to the south is still the main hub for riverboat merchants to exchange goods but the Junction mainly produces fruits and vegetables.  Other products are now used by their own population.  The Animal Refuge has done a good job of providing some farm animals.  The rivers changing courses, floods, draughts, and tornados have made transporting good difficult and took a toll on livestock as well.    Climate and pirates have caused many shortages over the years, plus there are many more towns now then there were back when the first world map was made.   And now we also have a shortage of river boatmen due to the giant frog invasion in Summerset Swamp a few years back.  Livestock and textiles are in short supply.

There were 28 of us, 16 adults with 12 children who volunteered to establish a settlement north of Riverboat Junction to raise livestock for trade.  The Junction would provide us with food and whatever else we needed in exchange for the livestock.  We would be basically animal breeders.  Coming from Riverboat Junction we did not know much else besides farming but some of the elders who were originally from Smallville taught us some survivor skills to tide us over until we were established.  We started out with 3 carts of supplies plus some seeds and some chickens.  Those chickens were our main concern. A fenced pasture for the chickens was built first.

The area along the river was a plain that had been damaged by flooding in the past, there were fewer trees then elsewhere.  Wood and firewood were also a priority.  We had a lot of work to do.

In the year 65 SVT of the agrarian calendar life is simple, pure and full of promise.

In the year 1969 CCE life was also given the same chance, the same opportunity - I remember sitting in the classroom watching the moon landing and fell in love these possibilities as I went home to watch Star Trek.

Now I sit here watching and listening to Zager and Evans sing - In the year 2525  - released in 1969     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GM3v2p2Kxb4&ab_channel=LesarchivesdelaRTS  thinking of the years I spent living on the land and wondering how we let so much of this promise slip through our fingers - listen closely to the song

You are correct Abandoned - I am looking forward to watching your story unfold.

Chapter 2

The founding families would establish a town and provide basic necessities and services.  My husband, Jalonzo, was the eldest male and we would be in charge, we would oversee the town and the stockyard operations.  We could expect herdsmen and other workers to arrive from the Junction. My name is Eleandra.

The town itself would be farther away from the dust and noise of the livestock production area.  We built a forester far to the north.  There was a hedgerow at the south border of the cutting and planting area.   A house for one family was built by the hedgerow and they would gather chestnuts, apples, flax, and branches for firewood.  There was a small shed, stockpile, and a woodcutter nearby.  A larger house was built for the foresters and one for the woodcutter and his family.  Two of the children already missed starting school.

A house was built for another family across from the chicken pasture.  They planted a small farmyard with sweet corn, potatoes, and berries.  They built a covering over the spot where some chickens decided they wanted to nest rather than in the pasture.  The family would care for all the chickens and the farmyard, and they would chop a bit of firewood.  Their chickens would scavenge for food in the farmyard and nibble on corncobs, the pasture chickens would be feed sunseeds from the patch that was planted next to the pasture.  Breeding animals need higher quality food and plenty of fresh water.

A storage barn was built on the corner across from the sunflower patch and a house for another family was built across from the barn.  Another house was built down the road and a blacksmith anvil was set up next to it.  The family in the house by the hedgerow set up a tailor workplace in their yard to make linen clothes from the hedgerow flax.  Our coat supply was getting low.

A seventh house was built behind the farmyard one.  A crop field was cleared and the family would plant cabbage the following spring.  We were already short of food and were glad that we learned which wild foods and mushrooms were safe to gather and eat.  We were eating some of the chicken's sunseeds and eggs.

Chapter 3

Ours was the last house built and by then our daughter, who was born shortly after we arrived, was already 1 years old.  Being in charge of the livestock operations, we built our house by the trading post that was built at the same time.  I didn't mind being close to the animals, I liked waking up to the chicken sounds coming through the open window every morning.  We also had a nice upstairs porch overlooking the river.

Jalonzo put up a notice board next to our house.  We would easily be able to tell the river boatmen what we had for trade and what we needed.  Our food and firewood supply was still low but we were doing okay.  We wanted to at least hold our own without being too dependent on the riverboat trade.

After the trading post was built, we set up the next phase of our livestock breeding and trading system.  The first water pump was dug next to the chicken pasture.  A small animal breeder shed was built across from the pasture.  The amount of feed and water to raise small livestock from birth to breeding age would be delivered to the shed. Poultry could be fed corn or sunseeds. The herdsmen would let the shed attendant know when the small animal was ready to be traded and a voucher would be sent to the trading post, the trade would be made there.

We hoped our system would work well so another stockyard could be built further north.  Our animals born and bred here in the mild climate with mild winters and no snow would have a hard time surviving way up north.  A stockyard in the north would raise acclimated livestock and shorten delivery time considerably.

Chapter 4

Three children became adults and two of them wanted houses of their own.  A house was built for 7- year-old Amarcus next to his parents.  They planted a farmyard behind the two houses with corn, potatoes, and cabbage.  They got a few chickens from the other farmyard.  The chickens would help weed the new farmyard by scratching the ground and they would eat insects.  8-year-old Maleesa's house was built by the hedgerow where she would take over picking apples, chestnuts, and berries.  Our food supply improved by early autumn of year 2.

In autumn, Uniqua, the livestock merchant, came to port for the first time.  He had milk cows with him to trade and a tom and 2 hen turkeys he found a ways upriver and managed to get into the boat.  The turkeys were ours if we wanted them.  The small vouchers showed we only had a few chicken to trade, not nearly enough for a pair of cows.  It was just as well because we were not yet prepared for caring for large animals, and we only had 2 laborers and 1 builder at the time.  The herdsman however said he could easily care for the turkeys as well as the chickens.  We had plenty of sunseed.  We took the turkeys.  Uniqua said he would return whenever he could and would try to have cows, sheep, goats, pigs, or ducks.  He looked forward to having a place he could rely on to get livestock for his customers.

One of the boys lead the wild turkeys from the port to their pasture by dropping a trail of sunseeds.  The turkeys followed.  They adapted well to their pasture with water and plenty of sunseeds to eat.  We soon had a small flock of baby turkeys.  Baby turkeys grow up fast but it would be awhile before we would have any turkeys to trade.  We would not need another small voucher shed just yet.

Chapter 5

After Uniqua left with the cattle, we began work on 2 bigger pastures than what we had for the poultry.  We did not know what the livestock merchant would be able to get next, but we wanted to be prepared.  We feared the new pastures might not be big enough.

By the time the pastures were done, the baby turkeys had grown up and there were more baby chicks.  The small animal shed attendant said there would be no problem issuing vouchers for the turkeys and the chickens.  There were more baby chicks too.  The town's population also increased.  Of the 18 young children, 3 were newborns.  Two of the children were about to reach school age so we built an old town schoolhouse.  We built a town hall to record the births and other town statistics.

Chapter 6

Uniqua did return again, but again he had only a few cattle.  As yet we didn't have any feed for large animals although we planted a corn patch between the 2 new pastures.  We built another water mill not far from the first.  The problem was we had no workers.

That problem was rectified in spring of year 3 when a young single male and 3 families arrived from Riverboat Junction to help.  They said we should just send word via the river boatmen that we were looking for workers.  Many families were migrating from the Junction due to overcrowding and poor housing conditions.

The families were very happy with the old town cabins we built from them by the river.   One began work at the new water pump and another at the corn patch.  They pitched right in to help gather branches for firewood when they learned there was a shortage.   They planted a farmyard behind their cottages and would cut some firewood there too.  A bitty market was set up there for their convenience.   The corn patch was doing well and a corn crib was built.

Chapter 7

We were ready when Uniqua returned with more cattle.  He could only let us have 4 because 2 were a special order for a customer.  He was glad to take chickens in exchange, and he would be glad when we had some cattle to trade.  The steer and cows were onloaded into the small trading post holding pen and the chickens that were being traded were herded down the fenced pathway to the dock.  Uniqua would leave word at the Junction that we would welcome more families.

The cattle were herded down the pathway to the far pasture next to the corn patch and crib.  A large animal voucher shed was built there by the crib.  We would not be able to keep many animals in that pasture, it was too small.

Chapter 8

We built a larger pasture for the cattle next to the one they originally were in.  It wasn't long before another calf was born.

In summer of that 4th year, 3 more families came from Riverboat Junction.  There was one young adult girl, and one of the other 3 younger children just missed starting school.  We needed the workers and were happy to have them.  They built cabins by the town hall.  The first families by the river were harvesting thatch from the patch growing in front of their cabins, they bundled it to use as firewood.  The firewood supply dropped again after the new cabins were built.  There was a flax patch growing next to the thatch patch.  The 2 patches looked quite pretty in late summer and early autumn.

Paraleen, the general goods merchant, came to port in autumn.  We ordered apples, walnuts, and flour.  He said he would take any livestock in trade except longhorn cattle, too dangerous to have in the boat.  He would also accept any textiles including flax.

In late autumn we were all in shock when Nell, the worker, was brutally slain by another villager.  She left behind a husband and 2 young children.   No one had any idea who would have done such a thing.  If her husband, Laver, knew anything he was not talking.  We quickly built a cemetery next to the town hall behind the new cabins that were built in summer.  Well, there was talk when a short time later, the young single girl, Aryan, from one of those cabins, moved in with him when she turned 15.  Laver said she moved in to help with the children.  There was talk.

Chapter 9

By the beginning of year 5 we had a water mill built on the river.  We had plenty of corn in the corn crib and thought to make some flour to use until our order came.  An old town bakery was built next to the thatch patch and we soon had corn bread to go with our fried chicken.  The chickens multiplied rapidly so we often had chicken as well as eggs from our pasture and farmyards.

Uniqua returned in spring with sheep.  We traded 18 chickens for 6 sheep.  The sheep were put in the first large pasture and would be fed thatch from the patch that was now being bundles in bales.  Some bundles would still be harvested and used as firewood.  We built a large animal voucher shed across from the pasture.  The attendant would gather the thatch bales and water needed to feed the sheep.  He would issue the vouchers to sent to the trading post when the sheep were ready to be traded.  The wool would also go to the trading post.

Chapter 10

In spring of year 5, 3 more families came to town.  There were 12 of them, 3 couples with 2 adult children and 4 younger ones.  Two of the families built side-by-side row houses by the river behind the woodcutter.  We would have a 4th forester to supply needed logs.  We would also have a gatherer of wild foods working in the forest.  The third family built a spacious house with a porch behind the bakery.  We had a new baker to bake our bread.  There was a thatch patch there next to their house that they would work to help supply more thatch for fuel and feed.

In summer, Paraleen, the general goods merchant, returned.  We traded chickens for apples, walnuts, and flour.  He was glad to get the chickens, there were quite a few new settlements starting up that wanted chickens in their farmyards.  He told us we could feed our apple cores to the chickens, we did not know that.  Before he went on his way, Paraleen said maybe next time he would take some of our wool and flax in trade.  We forgot to order wheat.  Now that we had a mill by the river we could grind more of our own flour.  We had enough corn even after feeding the cows and chickens to last until the next time.

After the houses for the new families were built work began on a small chapel behind the town hall near the cemetery.  It was completed by early spring of year 6.  Maybe it would help cheer up Nell's  friends and family.

Chapter 11

In early spring of year 6 we studied our inventory carefully.  We had a nice selection of fruit which included apples, berries, and strawberries.  We had potatoes and some cabbage, but most vegetables and wild foods were taken from storage as soon as they got there.  We had plenty of corn and sunseeds.  It was a good thing we did not as yet trade any of our sheep because mutton was our only meat.  We really wanted milk for the children.  Uniqua said he was trying to get us at least a pair of milk cows, but milk cows were more in demand than cattle.

When Uniqua arrived in summer he had pigs to trade.  We traded 2 cattle, 4 sheep, 10 turkeys, and some wool for the 6 pigs.  He would get us those milk cows soon.

It took some coaxing to get the pigs down the pathway to the pasture that the cattle were originally in.  We thought it would be big enough for the pigs.  Well, at least for the time being.  We were busy clearing land for a large pasture for the expected milk cows.

Are the animals you're trading in - Kid Animal Breeder (new, testing)?
Title: Re: Abandoned - Stockyards - Story 81
Post by: Abandoned on June 11, 2022, 09:30:53 PM
@Glenn   No, the animals you are seeing are vanilla livestock, RK livestock, and Kid Deco Farm Animals.  No animals are actually traded.  Kid Animal Breeder consists of the voucher sheds that take in animal feed and water, then produce voucher to trade (voucher represents animal).  No animals leave the map.  The voucher goes to the trading post. So, you are actually trading the corn, sunseeds, thatch, and water that goes to the voucher sheds. The patches and water mill are included in the new mod.  You don't even need livestock, the system will work with deco animals alone, with Kid Farmyard that has animals, or with Kid Animal Sheds.

Chapter 12

When Uniqua returned in late winter of year 6, he had ducks but no milk cows.  We were disappointed but happy to trade livestock, wool, and flax for the 8 ducks.  We planned to put them next to the turkeys in a pasture of the same size, but a large shallow pond formed after some heavy early spring rains, so the ducks got a double pasture.  They adjusted well and were soon in the pond and happily eating both corn and sunseeds.  We soon had baby ducklings.

In spring, 2 couples with 3 adult children came from Riverboat Junction.  Three old town worker cabins were built for them next to the other 3 by the town hall, across from the duck pasture.  The newcomers liked the view of the duck pond but wanted to know why there was a little piglet in the pond.  That convinced us that the pigs needed more room.  One of the little piglets squeezed through the pasture fences and was in the pond with the ducks.

Thank you Abandoned,

CC has what they call trade animals - but I could never do anything with them - they would arrive at the trading post, and I could never move them into a paddock to live, multiply, and trade back.
Perhaps I simply never got it right.

There used to be an old butchering mod that allowed you to trade animals, but it caused game problems so I haven't used it for years.

@Glenn, If not mistaken, I think those CC trade animals are only meant to be raised and used as trade good.  Aren't they found in crates or produced in a special barn.   :-\  I only remember they did not work right.  We thought this might be a good solution.

Chapter 13

The fact that the newly arrived couples had no young children did not keep us from wondering if our school had enough room for more.  We had 4 children by then and our oldest child would be starting school soon.  So would the little girl in the spacious house by the thatch patch, the 2 girls were the same age.  Our school had 10 students and room for 4 more but it was some distance away and there were other children that would reach school age soon too.  We built a new school across from that thatch patch by the spacious house.

Work continued on the pastures back by the duck pond and worker cabins of the newly arrived couples.  We were hoping to expand our chicken breeding.  Adalia, the gatherer, said there were rabbits back in the forest that were quite tame and wondered if we would want to breed them for trade.  Leannemari, who worked the cabbage patch, said there were often rabbits in the patch even as she worked; they would be easy to catch.  We asked Uniqua, the livestock merchant, if he would be interested in rabbits when he stopped by on his way to Riverboat Junction.  He was still trying to get the milk cows for us.  He was sure there would be customers wanting rabbits if they were available.  People were trying to be more self-reliant with supplies and deliveries the way they were at present.   We prepared the pasture next to the ducks for the rabbits.  We build a rabbit hutch and did some planting to make it more natural for them.  Leannemari brought some cabbage plants for them.

Chapter 14

As we continued to work on the pastures, we discovered another low-lying area that filled with water every time it rained.  It was more mud than water like the duck pond but we thought it would be a good spot for the pigs.  They were always in their water troughs and wallowing in the water that spill out of them.  We soon had a large area, including the muddy spot, fenced in.  We built 2 coverings, stocked it with food and water, and moved the little piglet from the duck pond to the pig pasture.  He went right to the muddy spot.   By spring of year 8 we had all the pigs relocated to the new pasture.

By summer we had a 3rd water mill built, this one near the wetland area outside the pig pasture.  On the other side of the pasture we built another corn crib to store feed corn.  The pigs were doing well and there were a few more little piglets.

Chapter 15

Paraleen, the general goods merchant, arrived in late winter and took our order for wheat.  He noticed our stockpile of stone and said we could help Red Rock Resort supply the river boatmen with needed stone.  The demand for building supplies was up too.  We were now able to supply livestock to fill most of the river boatman's special orders.  We were still waiting for milk cows.

In summer of year 9, Uniqua brought us 4 goats.  We traded chickens, turkeys, and rabbits.  We stocked the vacant pig pasture with corn and larger water troughs.  It wasn't long before we had a baby goat and goat's milk.  Our babies liked cooked wild oats with goat's milk for breakfast.  In late autumn our order of wheat came and we made creamed wheat with the goats milk.  In early spring of year 10 we had another baby goat.

Our food supply was good and variety, everyone was healthy.

Chapter 16

In early summer of year 10 we finally got our milk cows.  Uniqua had many orders for milk cows so he hoped they did good here.  He already had orders for the sheep, pigs, and chickens that he took from us in trade.

We had the pasture between the cattle and the pigs ready and waiting for the cows as they made their way down the stockyard path from the trading post.  We had only one small pasture left to fill.  We were seriously considering more chickens.  Every small farmstead wanted chickens.  We would be happy to supply them.

Chapter 17

It was a chilly rainy day in autumn that Uniqua returned with 8 white leghorn chickens.  We did not hesitate to trade for the chickens, and the chickens did not hesitate to follow the sunseed trail down the stockyard path.  They followed on, past the other chickens, the turkeys, the ducks, and the rabbits.

They made themselves right at home in their pasture between the rabbits and the pigs.  They had plenty of sunseeds to keep them content and productive.  We gathered some eggs but left others in the nesting box to hatch.  We had a nice flock of baby chicks in spring of year 11.

Chapter 18

There were more babies in Stockyard too.  The population in spring of year 11 was 91, 54 adults, 24 students, and 13 young children.  Everyone was healthy but not everyone was happy.  There were 32 families but only 23 homes, we were building a few more.  We build another chapel, the new one was by the new school and thatch patch.

We also set up a brewer's workplace in front of the town hall that had become a gathering place.  Ironic that founding families that wanted their houses far from the stockyards now enjoyed strolling along side of them listening to the gentle sounds of the farm animals and bringing their children to see the baby animals.  Watching the ducks was a favorite past time.  Now they could sit and visit and enjoy a cup of ale made with the wheat we traded for whenever the general good merchant came to port.

There still was occasional talk and speculation about the tragedy that occurred 7 years before when Nell was slain.  Laver and the 2 girls were often seen visiting her grave in the cemetery.  The family still lived on the other side of the town hall.  They were not happy, only Aryam was happy.  To her credit she has been a good stepmother to the girls.  We will probably never know the truth about what happen back then.

Chapter 19

Despite the past tragedy, the vast majority of Stockyards' citizen were happy and all were healthy.  Our crop field, farmyards, hedgerows, and gatherer provided us with a wide variety of fruits and vegetables.  Our stockyards gave us milk, meat, and eggs

We were happy being animal breeders getting farm families worldwide off to a good start by provided needed chickens, turkeys, ducks, rabbits, sheep, pigs, cattle, goats and milk cows.  We had a good life here in Stockyards, and even though the weather was mild year round, we enjoyed watching spring turn into summer.

Have a nice summer, weary traveler.

The End

@Abandoned :D :D :D Thank you very much, great story, congratulations on your brilliant idea when creating this mod. I have a question - it concerns building different shapes of buildings - what is this mod? Can these wall elements be added? new small lumps - to get another wooden lump of the house you used ??? with chapter 17,18,19? I like this idea of building such buildings - I have never personally used this method - I put simple, basic buildings and single-story .Regards

:) Thank you @taniu, I am glad you liked the story and mod  :)

I think the building you are asking about is the stackable cabins for Kid Old Town Mod.  When you start building, you decide if you want 1 floor house with roof, or you choose 1 floor with no roof, and then when built you add another floor with roof or without.  If without, then you add another on top of that.  You can place building alone or with one right next to it like I did.  Each floor houses a small family of 4.

@Abandoned ;) ;D Thank you for your answer. I will try new shapes of wooden buildings. One more thing - did you put up a triple element with a door on the side?  :-[- I like buildings with small, round towers like ??? :-[ Sorry for my whining but I am very curious about this technique. Regards

@taniu  If you are talking about the town hall building in chapter 18, the side sections are not my doing, that is how Kid makes the model.  That town hall is in Kid More Houses -vanilla.  Many of the buildings kid makes have side or back sections, some have porches.  That is how the buildings are made, not something done by the player.  :)  I hope I have answered your question.   :)
