Hey, so I am new to this forum and to modding, but I made my first mod!
Am gonna start on a set based around this theme (South African Architecture) next I think. Thank you to all the people here for helping me through it!
This first one is a cottage in the Cape Dutch style.
looks good :)
and i encourage you to continue and hopefully, people with have more mods to play with :)
Oooo... South African style, that'll be interesting !
Looking good so far.
Can't wait to see what else you come up with !
;D
The first model of the Xhosa House is (kinda) complete! Well, the blender part, no textures or AO yet.
It may take a while to get more done, cause I am moving next week, and gotta spend all weekend packing...

take your time :)
as you need time to learn all this :)
Yes, very nice looking houses. We will be patient. :)
Woo! Moving complete! Unpacking... halfway?
But I also finally have my houses. Mostly done, still a few tweaks, mostly on the footprint when I figure it out.
Just finished making all the models for the next group (Cape Dutch styles houses) in Sketchup. Going to start putting them all in blender today, but there are 9 models, so it might take a bit. I made them too fancy...
My eventual plan after these are done is to make some Bo-kaap style rowhouses and then a boarding house, and then figure out how to put them all in one file. And then I'll be done (with the housing set). Making these is a bit addicting, I keep coming up with new plans for things I want to do...
Congratulations
@angainor88 on your models :D they look superb!! Well done!!
Well I have most of the next one built... I just keep getting errors when I compile it. Asking for files that don't exist again *sigh*
Anyone up to staring at code? or should I ask in the Tips and Help thread?

if it ask for files that doesnt exist then it is because the links inside your .rsc are bad and not properly named.
if it ask things like work.rsc cropfile.rsc sharedelements.rsc.... you have to put a copy of the asked file in the proper folder.
without providing the names of the files that give you errors... doesnt help to determine what to do
Sorry, called away to dinner.
Yeah I keep looking for the thing that is named wrong, and I just can't find it. It keeps asking for a CapeDutchHouse.001.rsc.
I must just be missing something, but I have stared at all of it for hours...
http://www.mediafire.com/file/fag2jyq1p7nbi8g/CapeDutchHouse.7z
the name of the texture is wrongly named for 1 of your mesh : mesh02
Aaaa thank you so much! I would never have found it... I don't even know how that got there haha.
Well thanks to your help, I have finished the Cape Dutch House, and am 3/5 through the set. You guys put out everything so fast, I don't know how you do it >.<
hey they look awesome !
very .. unique :)
keep up the good job ;D
You should see some of the originals (that are still around, that is). They are very fancy :)
And there are modern ones "inspired" by the style, which are also fancy, but in a different way (mostly in being HUGE mansions).
Well, I finally finished the Bo-Kaap Rowhouses :D
Now I just have to do the boarding house, and then figure out how to package all of them together... Should only take another forever :P
colorful, very nice. :)
They look really nice. Can't wait to use them! :)
Thanks very much for your work on this.
Woo! I finally finished! I got the boarding house made and everything fits together! It seems to work ok in my computer, so hopefully it does on yours too.
Thanks to all of you on the forum for your help (especially RedKetchup and Kid for all the newbie questions I asked).
Here is the link to the download if you want to check it out:http://worldofbanished.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=377 (http://worldofbanished.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=377)
Nice Work! Trying them out now...
angainor88 (http://worldofbanished.com/index.php?action=profile;u=8302), I have been enjoying your houses! I was wondering if you were considering expanding this set, such as having other colorful buildings to coordinate with the row houses? (School, storage building, etc.)
(And, if you ever felt like updating the row houses, it would be nice if the small green peaked roofed row houses could be in blue and green as well. :) )
Yeah I am working on expanding the set :) I have two other houses that I have planned to be added, plus the expanded rowhouses, if I can get them to work with more.
I am also going to do an additional set of non housing stuff. I just started on the corner store for that (my sketchup model is half done, I just finished the way too complicated roof).
It takes me a while to do these mods though so it might take a little :P (plus I have to get some reference books from the library, so I don't have to rely on google and people incorrectly labeling their vacation pictures)
I am so glad to hear you are continuing with this set! :)
Well after a lot of problems with the mesh (and transparencies) I finally finished the Cape Town Corner Store. Afterwards I am going to finish the last two houses for the housing set, then back to the non housing set (hopefully none will give me the kind of trouble this one did...)
Wow! Advanced railing!
Looks like something I want to learn. :)
looks great !
Very nice building! It's great to have different architectural styles in the game. I really love that second floor balcony with what looks like fancy designed metal railings. :)
Is that one building in two colors, or are those two color options, with the building being either one or the other?
how about the size ? by the look of your building, it should be a 8x4(+1road) building ?
Looks very nice. :) Love the colors!
Ah, it's two different buildings 4x4 plus road on both sides of the corner.
Yeah those railings took a while to figure out how to do haha, but in the end are not too hard (it's just getting the transparencies to show up).
And in the fastest house I've ever built, here is the Corbelled House. It's gonna be a small 2x2 house.
Now there's one left in the housing set before I can go back to the non housing set :P
Lovely building!
Just one note. You can't line up road with the door on a 2 tile side.
Besides, it is barely room to have any bed in there. Are they really that small?
Suggest you make it 3x3 (simply size x and y)
i agree with kid ....
you should make it bigger, it is as big as a backyard shed or outhouse :D
That is an interesting house style and another house style from real life I had never known about that I learned about from you, aingainor88. This game has wound up being a bit of a culture and history lesson aside from a game, thanks to the modders. :)
I agree that it should be larger than 2x2, unless you want that tiny one to be a storage building, which the people also used that style for.

Totally agree! Lots of architectural styles I might have seen but never paid attention to before getting into the mods for this game. This one being noteworthy as I know nothing about South African architecture at all. Really love the houses and the market is beautiful looking. Interested to see how it all goes together.
Do you find you pay more attention to buildings in general since playing with mods? I've always appreciated a nice building, but I catch myself really looking at everything now. There's a house in my neighborhood I've seen thousands of times and never appreciated how unique it is. Looks like it could be included in kid's Houses for Sale set. Was stopped in traffic the other day and found myself admiring the roof on a tool shed or something and matching garage behind a house.

I have been as you, Maldrick, noticing buildings more, but also how they look like one from the game. Not long ago I passed a house and instantly thought, "Hey, that's one of Red Ketchup's houses!" ;D
Yeah 2x2 is a bit small in game. I was debating if I should make it bigger...
Yeah I've always kinda been interested in architecture (of homes and stuff, because there are a lot of beautiful ones in my city). But I've been doing a lot of research for these mods and learning a lot :P
Well it's the final house for the housing set. I am not entirely happy with it because I couldn't quite make the texture look right...
I am going to hopefully get the whole thing as a download tomorrow :)
But, anyway, here is the Zulu house.
That Zulu house is a very different style of house from what I am used to! Very interesting!
What would go nice with the Zulu house are some curved palisades to create a full kraal set.
Well the updated download is here :)
http://worldofbanished.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=377 (http://worldofbanished.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=377)
Got the next part finished :)
This is the Cape Town Bar (I am going to try to build a second floor house for it, if I can get that to work...)
I love the style of your Capetown bar! Good luck with the second floor house! :)
Second floor house complete!
(sorry for the delays, I've restarted playing Fallout 4... my settlements need me!)
Next up I think is the school, then maybe the mosque or the hospital, and a records hall type thing. Also a restaurant!
Work is still going slowly, but I finished the Open Schoolhouse!
I am glad to see further development with this set! I look forward to when they are ready for downloading.
Need a little advice/help for this next part:
I finished building the mosque, but I wanted to change the default "priest" and "chapel" icons. I edited them in the Resource folder, but it didn't seem to change it in game. Do I need to re-run the build resources.bat? or something else entirely?
Thanks!
you must never never never change anything in the resource folder!
you need to work inside your own mod folder, never the game resources folder.
Well with your help, it's complete. I am going to release it as a separate mod from the rest of the South African buildings.
http://worldofbanished.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=431 (http://worldofbanished.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=431)
Thank you again, RedKetchup!
The mosque looks great! I love the style and that it is colorful.
Here is a small one for the set, but here is the African Beehive!
More colorful things! Nice bee hives! One day I plan to make a colorful only section, so your buildings will be there!
Well I will have to hurry and finish the set then :)
I am glad you like them!
I like them, I sometimes make more colourful districts and these would fit there nicely :) Would you consider adding shading? that would make them look even better :)
I do have AO maps on them that show up in blender, but they never seem to look the same in game...
I am not super skilled at digital art haha, and am still learning how to use gimp without tearing my hair out.
Shading directly on the texture is important too :) You often might want subtle shading that uses a darker colour of your texture (not just transparent black), and make it more detailed. I have a good example of a lamp I made some time ago for The Sims 2 (but it'll work similarly in Banished too, after all a model is a model and a texture is a texture; I'm in the process of putting my plants into Banished and I don't need to alter things except for the scaling). Here (https://i.imgur.com/8mHBaTF.png) is the final look, and here (https://i.imgur.com/02LQsFP.png) is the texture. For comparison, here (https://i.imgur.com/0u4cvud.png) is the lamp before shading, and here (https://i.imgur.com/fM20ByD.png) is the texture. As you can see, shading made a lot of difference to the final look.
Now for a Banished example, here (https://i.imgur.com/o5Tma6x.png) is my fern in progress (don't worry about the massive size, there will be smaller variants :)), here (https://i.imgur.com/872FFNe.png) is the texture, and here (https://i.imgur.com/MIGWL8w.png) is the AO. As you can see, most of the shading work is done on the texture. AO also affects how snow appears on the texture (you can see here (https://i.imgur.com/fgws7hq.png) that there's less snow near the roots, exactly where my AO is darker).
I hope it helps :) Feel free to open those textures I posted in Gimp and take a closer look.
Well that was an unexpected hiatus (too many June weddings to go to). But I finished the Cape Town Clocktower! I tried to do some more advanced shading techniques... not sure how they turned out haha. I think the problem is that since the buildings in real life are painted and smooth it's hard to give them extra texturing? I dunno. Working on it haha
I like that wrap around deck.
Really nice. I've been enjoying the houses and look forward to this new set. Thanks for all your hard work! :)
@angainor88 :DI really like your work on the models. OK - I'm sending a couple of photos of different parts of Africa: houses and churches - new idea ? Greetings
Hoooo those are some fancy churches. I will definitely consider them. I haven't entirely decided where I want to got after I finish this set, so I will keep those in mind :)
Okay finally finished the next part of this set, Braai Stand! (Braai is a kind of barbecue, and since I love cooking I thought I'd include a food stand of some kind :)
Not too fancy building, but the code took a while :P
That's great that you made a barbecue stand, and with colorful coverings! Some wealthy Bannies might like that in their backyards.
Ok here is the Old Town Pump, a well.
:) You really make some strange things. This well is a piece of art.
Does it have a background in reality?
Yeah it's actually based on a drawing of something that presumably existed back then. I had to make some changes because I didn't want a billion polys for a well (and also was tired of modeling domes haha)
That fancy enclosed pump is wonderful! It is needed in the rich section of town, instead of the wealthy Bannies just seeing a pipe in the ground. :)
I have finished the last piece of the South African set! Whew! Next I gotta clean it up and put it together... Then I can release it!
Here is the Cape Dutch Hospital
Whew, well this set is over :D Time to start a new one!
it looks great !!
Just finished updating the AOs for these buildings. I didn't do it right the first time around :P
I'm going to do a chart of things people might want to know for them; aside from what materials used, heating, and occupancy, is there anything else people would find useful?
I may add another house or two to this set, depending on if my research turns up anything interesting.
a pinned listing of your mods in the 1.07 mod pages like the other modders have. :)
What Brad said, I was gonna say that too! Also whether or not anything can be upgraded.
I will add a pinned listing when I am done updating them :)
None of mine have any upgrades yet, but if I do have some in future I will make sure it's in the chart.
Well I found a couple new house to add to the South African collection, so here is the first one.
The Ndebele House!
Very nice houses!
And the last new addition to the housing set, the Port Elizabeth Terrace House
I like the porches.
Ok both files for South Africa have been updated. The Miscellaneous one has an updated AO, and the Housing has two new houses and the updated AO.

hello, i have been using your mod sets in my current map-http://worldofbanished.com/index.php?topic=3480.0
i have your mods at the bottom of my mod order and am using the RK ROP mod as the main base or start mod. the tea orchard takes about 3yrs to produce but does very well in the hot climate. tea orchard produces tea not tea leaves and appears to be in-edible.the tea house uses the tea even thou it reads tea leaves. it shows the food limit but uses the luxury limit.
the only storage i found with your sets is a mountain storage. i've used some crates and carts from other mods.there is no blacksmith. not sure if you plan to add more food processors like a butcher or creamery.
some of the menus when scrolling over the building icons on the toolbar didn't translate to English. i went thru some of your write ups to see what the buidings were for. and to get more ideas on how they are to work or fit together. in the process i did fid i was missing the african housing part.now i have a lot more different houses to build. wish there was storage to match them.
i have a lot to keep busy with yet. just wanted to give you some feedback so i dont forget it later. you did a lot and it is really colorful.
Thank you for the feedback, I really appreciate it! I did only have the one storage. I will have to add more for any future sets I do, people keep asking for it :P
The raw material tea created by the trees is inedible and under the "health" flag, same as herbs. The produced tea at the teahouse is under the "alcohol" or luxury flag (depending on the other mods used). Is is labeled as that on the production menu as Tea [Tea Leaves] to differentiate it from Tea[Herbs]. Is in confusing that way? I could try to change the raw material to "tea leaves" if so. English just refers to both as the same name, making it difficult.
ETA: Found and fixed the limit. It should display the "alcohol" or "luxury" limit now
