Title: Forum Challenge #5: Trading Empire
Post by: solarscreen on July 14, 2014, 06:22:39 PM
Build a trading empire!

Run 30, 40, 50 trading depots or more and jam your map full of barns and resources!

Categories:
1. World Grocer - Fruit, meat, vegetables, grain. 500 farmer contestants, build those depots!
2. Wealthy Industrialist - wood, stone, coal, tools, clothes
3. Ale Master - How many taverns and barrels can you build?

Post your town screencaps and be sure to include the Town Hall captures that show your total inventory.

The deadline is midnight UTC August 1st.

Your choice of seed, conditions, and difficulty.

GOOD LUCK!

Just so I'm clear, are you saying that you want us to buy those things or that you want us to sell those things? I have to admit that I've never paid attention to whether or not sales figures appear in the town hall graphs and stats.

I think it is just have them in the TPs available for trading.

I'm going to give this a go, starting from scratch with a seed I feel should be good for building a trading empire (Hopefully)

When Life Banishes Lemmons Trade your Ale

As the screen below shows, we start to the West of a nice lake which has the trading river go right through the middle, to the North is a second large lake which also is on the trading river. So if the Lemmons can build up fast enough this looks like a great place for a trading empire (I would make and sell lemonade, but no lemons  :( )

Seed: 19920106 (I think, will check that later)

Now you can start to see the plan layout to start with.
I have Wheat, Chesnuts & Squash as my seeds, so guess it will be Wheat Beer to start with. First screen shows the starting spot with single Wheat farm, and boarding house built, next screenshot shows my Forest Node to the South, in the middle will be my first market place providing the basis for building my town, placement chose as the edges of the circle reach to the farming community in the north, Trading & Fishing in the East (Last screen), Forestry & Hunting to the West to begin with.

I decided to use the town I've been blogging, Morita, for this challenge. The river on that map has too many trading post locations to give it up. If you want to see the current state, it is here: http://worldofbanished.com/index.php?topic=248.0

I've been thinking about this and I am not sure I can make a map with that many trading posts and keep it going!

I changed my mind. I'm going to start a new town. It's called Antre and the seed is 351988393, Valleys, Large, Mild, Off, Hard. The river will accommodate 45 or so trading posts.

I probably won't win in any specific category since I'm not going to be going for the most whatever in storage. Don't get me wrong; I intend to be a major booze baron. The point will be to sell gallons upon gallons of ale and acquire enough materials through trade to make a very prosperous and aesthetically pleasing settlement. Take that, Interbrew.  ;D

My city candidate for this challenge will be : Atikamek. i dont think my main river can support a huge 45+ trading post  (too much diagonals) but i ll try something ... crazy lol. probably it wont make me win but ..... you will call me crazy lol

Atikamek is the name of an Amerindian tribe from which my ancestors are coming from (from mother side) which lived (and still live) in province of Québec :)
i have chosen this Large Valley Mild Off Medium seed 284973182 posted by someone on this forum cause i really love all the plain space this map holds; a huge zone covering all the center and east side of the map. This map has a huge potential to produce tons of goods.

Screenshot #1 is my minimap, #2 is my seed, #3 is my first screenshot.

I don't know, @RedKetchup, if you can convince merchants to go into the lake you might get a bunch of TPs going there. Nice looking map.

Yeah. i know. i already planned to put many TP in there full of stock even if no merchant will go there. the goal is fill those TP ? nothing says about you need to really being able to trade those goods or not lol ^^

Just as a reference point, here's what the 15 Rickettsville TPs have in them right now, just for trading purposes, meaning without scouring the land for every last item that has trade value  ;)

I keep most of the plums in my TPs to prevent my greedy gluttons from stuffing their faces with them before I get a chance to brew them into ale.

Too bad you can't export prunes. Then Rickettsville becomes Regularville.

So to win, you can only have things for one group in your trading posts? Like only meat veg grain or only wood stone coal tools clothes? Or is it how many trading post and the most total goods in one of the categories? 'Splain to me.
Title: Re: Forum Challenge #5: Trading Empire
Post by: RedKetchup on July 20, 2014, 07:50:06 AM
also ... are the goods have same 'value' (1 item= 1 item) ? or it will be counted by their 'market value' ( stone=8, firewood=4, apple=1, etc ) ?

btw seems to me we cant put more than 9999 of same item per TP (like 9999 ale which only count for around 30% of TP's capacity) or (like 9999 apple which count only for like 5% lol capacity)

Title: Re: Forum Challenge #5: Trading Empire

I think you have to be allowed to trade whatever you like. Just that firewood isn't being judged. But I don't make the rules  ;)

Ok, to answer questions posted before:

Value of each item is counted in this contest. If you can stockpile more warm coats or ale or other high value items, the better.

All items can be stored and traded.  This is not a single item contest.  HOWEVER, the categories do specify what you should be trading for that particular empire!

Note: Sorry for my lack of attention the past week. Work has been crazy and I have been working too much and sleeping too little!

I have been trying to post up a screenshot or two but the site just isn't letting me today. But I am going to give this a try to see how many traders I can handle!
Town name is Severlot (I just let the game pick it), and the seed is 411823914 (got it from a seed thread on SRforums). The rest is large, valleys, mild, disasters off, and easy start (for a change and for the sheep).

i dont like alot this challenge cause i m totally unable to just .... ignore the merchants docking on my trading posts. i pass all my time to deal with them, like 90% of my gaming time.
it is stronger than my will, cant resist to go see and do some deals, always.

i really dont know how i ll be able to deal with 48-72 trading posts lol  :-[

lol i ve been able to put 60 TP on your river and the lake connected to it ... + 9 TP on the lake to the north, if it connect , and 13 more on the big one in top right of your map (if also this one too connect).
so ... 82 TP total lolz

I considered several maps but I chose this one because looked like a really good map for this challenge. I've never auto traded or had more then six trade ports, I figured I needed any advantage I could give myself. ;D

I would not anticipate me putting up 80 trade posts though.  :o

@rkelly17, looking good. I have been bogged down with moving our office location, not finding much free time. My village has not even made it to year seven, I think. You are already at 70! Go go go!

Up to year 57 and trundling along. My village has 22 TPs in place, and another 18 currently laid out, it looks like both lakes are accessible for traders which will help (I have also tried to put two on an island in the middle of the lake, no idea if they will work yet).

I have cranked up to over 40 Taverns pumping out the Ale, but not really producing enough at this point, will need to crank up a reserve of food and resources and then have a go at building an ale reserve.

I think I am going to forgo this challenge and try to focus on the Storybook one, instead. I don't think I can do both creditably right now. I will be watching and reading all the entries though! It'll be nice to be able to read along as the challenge progresses for a change! :D

Hoping to fill my trade ports this week, probably put a run through on at 10x to try and get as much ale made as possible and fill the ports to the maximum.
Not sure it will be that competitive though.

Looking forward to starting the Storybook one, just looking for a map that can fit my starting plot.

Hello all,

I present my trading village, Prosper. I will be away for the weekend, leaving tomorrow for a four day mini vacation. Prosper has 60 trading posts, with room for a few more that will not get finished. Wool coats, firewood, and mutton are the primary exports. Good luck with the challenge! I will be back to see the results Monday night.

Well, I made a bad decision back at the beginning of this challenge; I thought I would be ahead by using my vegetarian challenge town as my trading challenge town. As it turns out the needs of a big farming town are in conflict with the needs of a trading town like @Bobbi has shown us. In order to maximize my goods for trade, I shall have to take Rickettsville down a two-year dead end. After that I'll be reverting to a save from yesterday in order to keep the town moving forward towards pop 3000 (and 410 nomads!)  ;D

Even then, I have no chance of equaling what Bobbi has done with 20% the population. But I'll carry this through, posting results in a couple of hours.

Here is @rkelly17's TP inventory screenshot.  @RedKetchup and @Zephormite seem to have dropped out of the contest?  I tabulated the results for the three entries that I found, and the results are listed below.  My conclusion is that @rkelly17 wins the Ale Master, and @Bobbi takes the World Grocer prize.  Wealthy Industrialist is in question, in my mind.

The rules as I understand them:
1. World Grocer - Fruit, meat, vegetables, grain. 500 farmer contestants, build those depots!
2. Wealthy Industrialist - wood, stone, coal, tools, clothes
3. Ale Master - How many taverns and barrels can you build?

Value of each item is counted in this contest. If you can stockpile more warm coats or ale or other high value items, the better.

Now, which wood is "wood"?  Are iron, leather, and wool really disallowed?  Depending on what @solarscreen really meant, either @irrelevant or @Bobbi is the winner of Wealthy Industrialist.

the way i understood what solarscreen meant is : there is only one winner. another ting that makes me think also about that is : it s not a 'multi challenge' only a 'simple' challenge

QuoteForum Challenge #5: Trading Empire

what ever if you are the kind of player to be an ale master, or a master trader, or a world grocery master.... the goal is to get the highest value total stored in all your trading posts.

and also i understood also everything inside, even firewood, counts.

edit: yeah, ketchup is out. i didnt liked it so i gave up. i should have do my things as usual, stock all that in barns/stockpile, and there at the end, build all my TPs and ask them to empty all barns/stockpile of reserved ressources i would have made. but was too late.

edit2 : this is an example of a 'multi' challenge : Forum Multi-Challenge #2: Vegetarian Village <=== there is the word 'multi' in the title.

To keep it simple:

World Grocer: All food items
Wealthy Industrialist: All non-food items
Ale Master: Barrels of ale  and most taverns - I may pick two winners here

Announcements to follow this weekend!  Enjoy a break and then come back to the Storybook challenge.

I will be reposting previous challenges as "newb" challenges for those who joined recently and give them a shot at trying the early challenges.

Mid-month a new challenge will be posted for everyone!

Since you only have three contestants and Bobbi is the clear winner of everything but the ale, and has no ale, that awards a shared win to irrelevant and rkelly17 for the ale because they are the other two contestants and their ale count is similar.

*giggles softly*

Hey, you know that stuff called FiberFix that is sold for fixing pipes?  It's apparently not waterproof.  The pipe joining device called SharkBite works though, after you cut away the piece of pipe with the hole in it.  Ask me how I know, and have a beer.  I am drinking Stella Artois today.

@slink never heard of Sharkbite, and I troll Home Depot pretty religiously. I shall definitely remember this, thanks for the tip!

No leaky pipes here (thank God) and I'm drinking the local Waterloo Dark (Muenchen style befitting the Germanic heritage of Waterloo County).

Oh! Forgot about the beer. I was slumming it with a couple cans of Natty Bo.

Rumors of my demise were greatly exaggerated ...  I hate changing jobs. But, work is work.

Looks like @slink called it for us:  @Bobbi is a double champ and @irrelevant and @rkelly17 will share the Ale Master title!

Congrats on your great efforts and thanks for playing! We really have some amazing players here on WOB!

I certainly never intended to win in two categories. Was strictly going for coats and such. Could not get rid of all that mutton to save my life. My intentions were to keep the pop as low as possible because of the dreaded lag, but try to populate all along the river on both sides. My thought process involved many 20 x 20 sheep farms with one herdsman, and learning to auto trade. Never having had that many sheep before, I was merrily rolling along, and then I noticed Health and Happiness were on the decline. WHY? Then I realized that although a sufficiency of food was available, 75% of it was meat! OH NO's. So I set about un-auto purchasing, and using only mutton to trade for other foods to equalize the un-balance. And shortly after that time ran out for the contest.

Thanks! That was fun. And my trading challenge town (former vegetarian challenge town) just this afternoon passed 4000 pop.
