@Voeille , the plants look great in game and it is nice to have another modder.  :)  I have a suggestion regarding mod names and descriptions.  I have a great number of mods arranged in a set order, I pick and choose deferent mods to activate for each map and story. Adding new mods into the game and arranging is a time consuming process.  Long mod names are difficult to read and long descriptions are even more time consuming to move up and down the mod list.  I would suggest whenever possible to use shorter mod names example Decorative plants ... could be Deco plants-evergreen and also to shorten descriptions as much as possible without leaving out vital information. Many words are often unnecessary and can be left out.  :)  Keep up the good work.

Add note, @Voeille also you might want to consider putting a V - before the name of your mods, then all your mods will be grouped together in Windata folder and in mod list.   :)

I already did that with the plants, but I didn't think of it with the earlier mods. But I'll be doing it from now on :)
Title: Re: Decorative Plants
Post by: Abandoned on May 28, 2018, 12:58:18 PM
I have pkm files named Decorative Plants with no V in front.  Was it only only on the zip file maybe?

Edit: Okay, correction, it is on pkm file in windata folder with V but not on the name of the mod itself, in the mod list in the game it is Decorative Plants.

Post by: Voeille on May 28, 2018, 01:09:44 PM
That's weird, I just downloaded the file to check and the PKMs have the Vs.

Edit: Yes that's true, I did not put it in the description.

:) sorry for error, v on pkm in windata but not on mod name in game modlist.  It would be nice to have your mods together in the modlist also.   ;D Another way of saying would like more mods.  ;D

Does the name affect the mod list too? For me it just puts the new stuff at the top, and then you manually arrange it. Unless you just mean it'd be easier to have the V that looking at the author.

There probably will be more mods :) After I get past mapping a cube that is. Whoever said that making plants is hard never tried a cube!

Yes, when you add a new mod to the game it goes at the top of the list and you can then move it where you want.  Some like myself alphabetize their mod list.  Mine is in 4 sections each alphabetized. Also I believe those who clear the registry end up with the mods alphabetized.  With initials in front of mod name, the modders mods will all be grouped together.  Also a good way to identify whose mod it is. You can see Discrepancy's are DS, Red's are RK, Kid's are Kid.  The naming system was suggested to the modders some time ago and when they updated their mods they added the preface.  It is up to the modder of course.  :)

;D future mods  ;D

Would it be possible to make climbing plants or supporting walls to cover that ugly slope that arises after terraforming?

Don't expect a lot or too often, I'm rather slow ;)

I was thinking about ivy, but @kid1293 had a good point that not everything is placed the same on the grid, so it'd just float in the air. I normally cover the slopes with trees and bushes.

Also, I'm a female :) (I don't really care for people misgendering me, it happens a lot on the internet so I'm used to it and it's not a problem, I just mentioned it for clarification.)

@Voeille, it may be just me, but when I place decorative plants from your mod the lighting goes all haywire. Is this a wider experience or am I using the mod wrong? I love the look of the hibiscus and hydrangeas and want to put them all over everywhere. One can never have too much decoration.

Do you mean lighting on the plant or in the whole game? Someone mentioned to me that they had the plants casting really huge shadows when using DirectX 11 in the game options.
Title: Re: Decorative Plants
Post by: wiscoke on May 30, 2018, 11:57:29 AM
@Voeille I have this only with the trees. all the rest looks normal. but with the trees , I'll see some kind of 'flashes' all the time. its like the shadows of the trees goes on and off.
Title: Re: Decorative Plants
Post by: Voeille on May 30, 2018, 12:10:42 PM
That's really weird, I did not touch the shadow for trees. They use the same material as hydrangea and hibiscus, so it seems quite strange that only trees are problematic. Does it happen with both kinds of trees?

That happens to me too.  Weird lighting on the map, with grayed out parts and flashing.  It happened with the hydrangea.  I haven't tried the other plants yet.

Are you using the DX11 setting in the game? I'm using 9 and it works fine for me.

Using custom material has sometimes shown to produce errors on certain graphics cards.

http://worldofbanished.com/index.php?topic=2266.0

Both these threads are about water but uses custom material files. Maybe it is related to
this shadow problem.
Title: Re: Decorative Plants

I only have it with the trees.
Title: Re: Decorative Plants
Post by: kid1293 on May 31, 2018, 06:18:32 AM
Yes, but the material Voeille is using is not 'standard' and we have no guidebook how all settings
actually work. It is very much trial-and-error. Some settings are really game breaking.
Like the pink water described in one of the links in my last post.
Maybe adding/removing things from vanilla material files can upset a graphic card.

That must be the problem indeed, despite the fact I didn't change that much. Maybe just the very fact I changed something causes the problem.

When I switch the game to DX9, the screen freezes on that options screen, no ability to even cancel, and I have to go to Windows Task Manager to stop Banished.
When I was in my normal DX11, even after placing the plants or trees, it makes the whole screen darker.
So, unfortunately, I can't use your items.  Maybe someday I will get a new computer and then they will work.

I mean the whole game. It is mostly dark (except maybe the decorative trees themselves???) with lightening flashes of normal. I have an MSI Invidia GTX 950 and use DX11. I use full screen at 1080p. I'll have to look at specific graphics settings for the game, but they are mostly in the mid-range. When I place the hibiscus and hydrangea, it is OK until they are built, then it goes wonky. With the trees it goes wonky as soon as I select them for placement.

That really is strange. I have NVidia GeForce GTX 860M, and I have DirectX 9 set in the game settings, all the graphics settings are set to highest. Does it do something if you change settings to higher/lower?

Further settings: Refresh 60 hz (same as my monitor); VSynch On; Full Screen On; Antialising 2x MSAA; Texture Filtering Trilinear; Shadow Res Medium; Reflection Terrain. I'll try changing and see what happens.

@Voeille , I have good news! I turned off anti aliasing in the options menu, and now I don't that weird shadow, light flashing, dark screen problem!  When I am using the cursor keys to "travel" around the map, sometimes when I pass over a building or crop field, the screen goes a bit dim, but when I stop traveling around, all is well.

So if anyone else has an Intel graphics card, try turning off anti aliasing.  Or maybe even if you don't have Intel, but have problems, try that.

To clarify my previous post, when I selected one of the deco plants to place, and am moving over the map to it's desired placement, that is when there is a dimming of the screen as the plant "floats" over a building or crop field.  But, one it is "planted" using the cursor keys to move all over the map does not result in dimness.  I am so glad I got this solved as I really, really wanted to use the hydrangea bushes, and now I can!  :)

It's good to hear that at least something works :) Incidentally, how does the game work with an Intel chip in general? It's integrated with the processor, meaning it not only needs to deal with all the normal processor stuff, but also graphics, and Banished can out a strain on the processor anyway. I have two built-in graphic cards (it's common in laptops), one is the NVidia card I mentioned, the other is the Intel chip. I always run games with NVidia, but there's one based on Sims 2 engine that won't launch with NVidia and I'm forced to use the Intel chip, and the difference how it runs compared to Sims 2 (which runs with NVidia just fine) is quite significant.
Title: Re: Decorative Plants
Post by: galensgranny on June 01, 2018, 12:35:30 PM
It seems to me my game runs fine with the Intel chip.  I do remember when I first got Banished, there was a problem getting it run.  After searching and reading several posts, I did something that made it all ok in some settings for the game, some kind of start condition.  I don't remember what it was.  Maybe it was that I needed to use Direct X 11.

I play with shadows on low.  And I need to use the "no smoke" mod so things aren't overly slow.
So basically, in general, it seems this Intel chip system is not so good anymore for recent games.
