It's no secret we have some amazing Banished players on the forum. Whether you are new to Banished or have played since the game was released, you can learn something new from every challenge we have here.
Since Banished was released, I have seen only a few towns over 4,000 and one of those I'm not sure was functional at that level after the methods used to achieve that population. Two 4,000 plus towns have happened here at WOB.
Those two members have agreed to take on the first Ultimate Challenge: 5,000 citizens
Now if you have been lurking and not playing but you think you can take on this challenge, I invite you to join in. I dare you to join in!
The rules are simple: Any seed, any settings. No deadline. Build out your map until you reach 5,000 population. Blog your progress in the Village Blogs sub-forum at least once a week, even if you had no game time that week.
The first to achieve 5,000 will be crowned our Ultimate Champion. Those who achieve 5,000 afterwards can join the ranks of this elite status.
Let the games begin! And, may the odds be ever in your favor!
Woot ! Go Go Go You can doeet ! ;D
I look forward to seeing others' towns! Good Luck to everyone who chooses to do this challenge!
My Candidate will be : Cheyenne , a 8167 seed Large valley on medium fair start.

You'll be able to follow its progression :) in my blog : Red Ketchup - Cheyenne : A future 5000+ pop village.
There is no possible way I could join this challenge. The lag at over 1000 on my PC is torturous.
@irrelevant you are in this as well aren't you? Just getting the thread up-to-date!
@solarscreen yes I am! Off to a slow start however. I'll start a blog this weekend.
yeah he was too picky with seeds ^^^haha, just kidding :)
You're right! And all that fussing around probly won't make any difference. Each seed comes with its own problems.
Oh dear. lol. This challenge would kill my computer :o. Goodluck to all who take part.
5366 Bannies !!!! LOL

WOW!!!!!
A massive achievement! Congrats,
@RedKetchup.
thanks :) i could be more proud of the city ... but bad coding made me upset alot ^^ still 5366 :)
Congratiulations, be proud of it.
You can always say; It could have bin better, that is Banished and the reason we all play it over and over again, always finding new challenges.
Thanks you
@Nilla and Welcome on WoB !
i guess you're right :)
Congratulations Mon Ami! You are in a class by yourself. :)
WOW!!!
Already???
You ARE the MASTER BUILDER!
654 NOMADS :o :o :o :o :o
@solarscreen Course, he didn't let it run for a year after accepting them ;) ;D
I would have done exactly the same thing, just to have it done with. I know what he was going through, 100s of guys, farmers, living clear on the other side of the map from their fields; it isn't any fun.
yeah
@irrelevant is right :) he knows very well how it s going,
he knows very well how a city with so many people is going. and yeah i had +1 and even +2 farmers at each crop, just for a chance to get one near who would be really willing to go work while all the others were doing nothing. the nomads arrived 2 years later than should have been, they were late by 2 years. and all last 5 years, all my food was going down cause the bad job vs house allocation. and when they finally arrived, nothing left, 20k food for 5k people ... thats terrible.
in fact, i think my other city, One, would live with them way more easily since i get the 1M food every 1-2 years. maybe one day , i ll do couple of years just to get a big pack of nomads like that ^^. but for the moment, i just want to relax at normal 2x speed without laging ^^, a rest well deserved :)
You've earned it, mon frere. :)
Who else is going to join
@RedKetchup with a 5,000 plus town?
I'm working on it ( http://worldofbanished.com/index.php?topic=327.0 ), but I'm not nearly as speedy as he is. It'll take me at least two or three more weeks to get there.

@solarscreen Sure, I'm game to give it a go. Just be aware, to get to just 4000 it took me 6 weeks with a daily average in the game of probably 4-5 hours!
There is no deadline, just a winner!
:)

Too much lag for me.
So, my town Sink Mill and I made it to 5000 yesterday. For details, see the blog at http://worldofbanished.com/index.php?topic=327.0
Just for the record, I am continuing to work on this town, and will continue to update the blog. I'll also let everyone know when I accept more than 472 nomads and survive ;)
sooooo happy for you :)))
i let you know, at 5k pop, when you ll get nomads... you ll get 600-700 nomads lol, you will shatter my record :)
@RedKetchup Merci mon ami!
I wonder what the record is for the number of deaths due to a disease outbreak? I'm probably in the running for that award as well! ;D

I could - not disease but starvation, my record is 1700 and tonight I managed about 1100 :'(
@solarscreen pop 6000; now what? ;) ;D

@assobanana76 No, this town isn't vegan, that was a different challenge. Although now that I have no pastures and no hunters, it is pescetarian. ;)

@solarscreen My goodness, I wasn't trolling for goodies, thanks! ;D But more games isn't something that my wife would thank you for. ;) You should save those for the winners of other challenges.
You and
@RedKetchup are very kind.
I'll put up some more screenshots this evening.
I am back from my holidays in Spain and have looked a bit on this web-side, what has happened in the 10 days I was gone.
Although I am a big fan of RedKethup´s developments, I think; this is the most impressive thing that has happened in my absence! Population 6000! Without any mods! Grand Master; that is the real title for you!
My congratulations! :)
Congratulations
@irrelevant! This is a stunning achievement. I can only imagine how long it took for the citizens to get much of anything done at this level.
he has an angelic patience, and an angelic computer lol. (me after 2200 pop it s 1x all th way, 2x change nothing more than a 1x.

@RedKetchup I do have an Intel HD 4600 graphics processor, I understand this is a pretty good one.

@rkelly17 Thanks so much! Yes, it was painful at times. Merchant boats are the worst.

@Nilla Thank you! That is high praise indeed. Welcome back to Banished, looking forward to more blogging from you.
But I must disagree with you, my pop 6000 was just a stunt;
@RedKetchup is making the game better for everyone. He is the true Master! :D

@RedKetchup I do have an Intel HD 4600 graphics processor, I understand this is a pretty good one.
It's probably good as far as internal GPUs go, but doesn't really compare to standalone GPUs. Here is a comparison with some of the common (but very good) cards.
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=Intel+HD+4600
I have the 770 for example, which performs a fair bit better -- but of course is quite pricey too. The current town I'm playing has almost 2200 people in it, I'm playing with all settings on max, and it doesn't really lag much at 2x. A little snag here and there, but it's fine to play it. 10x is more troublesome! :D
@Pangaea Did you install the card yourself or did your machine come with it already installed? Any snags/issues? Maybe I should look into an upgrade. I know nothing about hardware.
I always build my PCs myself, so I installed it myself. It's pretty easy, but it helps to know what you're doing as there are cables to connect and slots to put the hardware into. The GPU is pretty easy, but your motherboard must be able to support it. Modern GPUs can be pretty draining on the power as well, so you need a power supply that can handle it. So it depends on what rig you have really. For these new cards, you need a PCI-E x16 slot, which is bigger than the other PCI slots. The card itself is fairly large as well, so you need the physical room for it.
This probably didn't help much and it sounds more difficult than it is, but there are some things you need to keep in mind before purchasing such a card. Not fun to fork out the money and then find out you can't use it (without other upgrades).
@Pangaea PM sent, returning the thread to OT :)

Wow! That's amazing,
@irrelevant! :D
mine is the 34th best GTX480 which shouldnt be too shady, at 2200 i still can play 2x but ... on the edge. at 2700 it s 1x all the way, 2x is same as 1x
My sense is that Banished is not so hard on the GPU but doesn't make ideal use of the CPU or RAM. I could be wrong, of course.

Could be, but in any case, I would think that at least in an unmodded state the game will be pretty efficient due to the background of Luke, the programmer. Huge towns will take its toll no matter what, though.
I think we far exceeded Luke's expectations on the size of colonies. Look at the accomplishments - they top out at 200 citizens. ;D

I don't think
@irrelevant needs to update his video card for Banished if he is able to support 6,000 plus people. It seems to be very obvious this game is more CPU intensive than it is GPU intensive if he did all that with an Intel HD 4600 onboard chipset.

Yeah, I agree with that actually. It doesn't seem very heavy on the graphics card, but more on CPU, and perhaps memory. Such huge cities put a real strain on things though, no matter what. Doubt Luke expected cities of 5-6000 people when the top population achievement is 900 :D
Duh, I don't know what I was thinking when I said 200. :-[
@irrelevant That is really impressive!
@mariesalias thank you; good to see you around. :)
is it still possible to participate in the challenge?:D
this is my 2nd try of a big city. first time with woodcutter economy. 2500 pop at the moment and lots of space left on the map.would love to try 5000+
go go go try to beat that !
Simply amazing :o
I manage a maximum of 2500 inhabitants in an average map.
Firstly, because I lack the space. And secondly because my PC then begins to be slow.
Lel, i think i could do it
Omg its done. i did it! yes baby!

Barely made my goal.

I made a bunch of mistakes and think a few things could be improved. My guess is this technique could get to about 15,000 population before starving. If perfect luck happens Nomads would arrive exactly at the peak population and be the max size of 15%. That would make a population of 17,250. Maybe 20,000 population is possible but that would be a lot of attempts and luck.
I'll see the exact peak, upload some save files, and explain some things to do differently in another post. Feel free to use the save files and go higher. No mods were used.
@smurphys7 very impressive! I can't imagine how slow that had to be going. I haven't played Banished in quite some time and not really that much since my new PC so I haven't test just how large a population I get before it cripples even a good PC.
