even that, before i start to put alot of will by trying our challenges... i ve got at some point the 600 achievement, but it was because i tried to push it and those city were not healthy at all, everybody would have died 2-3 years after LOL but....

so ....... NINE HUNDREDS !!!! woooot !

Congrats! Looks like you worked hard for it! :)

ETA: It also looks like you have definitely thrown down the gauntlet for the farming challenge.  :o

@RedKetchup -- Congratulations!  The closest I've gotten so far is only ~700 population total, but that was a peak right before an epic crash.  :)

Nice, @RedKetchup! And by Year 57. Usually by year 50-60 I'm lucky to break 400.

it is starting to be crazy  :P i have over 1200 citizens now and it s starting (bah since i ve hit 1000) to be very laggy, even at 2x.

i dunno. my computer is a monster usually, i have a QX9650 i can overclock at 4MHz and sometimes ... not laggy but.. it gives some .. 1-2 sec freezes, and during these times, people die (as usual) and arent replaced :( so i continually need to check my crew and re-ADD some workers here and there.

missing some peeps in farms or whatever isnt a such big deal but when it s a teacher missing.... i am getting un-educated people   :'(

i have 8 GB RAM... maybe i am missing some

I doubt it has much to do with your computer, @RedKetchup. There are really many people with lag issues at around 1000 citizens. Somehow the game engine can't manage that number of people very well.

My theory is that those periodic small freezes occur when the engine does some citizen check, which take too long with the large number of citizens. Some processes are cut off or something, resulting in dead workers not replaced. The good news is that Luke has announced a fix (http://shiningrocksoftware.com/forum/discussion/1818/workers-not-getting-replaced-on-populated-map#Item_25) for this bug.

Nice going with the population boom though btw. :D

I am kind of dreading hitting 1K population. Partly because I am afraid I will kill all my people and partly because I am worried I will get the lag and that bug.

Theoretically my system should be able to handle it; it was built to handle Sims 3 with all it's EPs and tons of content. That may not sound like much, but TS3 is built on such a poor engine that it can (and does) destroy good systems! Even with extra cooling, I still have to have a fan blowing air at my tower to keep the heat down. Thankfully mods take care of most of the bugs.

Anyway, I guess i will find out if my system can handle it on the Farming challenge!

I assume you have NRaas' mods, like ErrorTrap (http://nraas.wikispaces.com/ErrorTrap) and Overwatch (http://nraas.wikispaces.com/Overwatch)? I've been using them for ages, and never had any serious, game-breaking bugs anymore. The Sims 3 uses a horribly inefficient game engine indeed. Loading the game takes soooo long, even though I have it installed on an SSD disk on a decent computer. My graphics card doesn't mind it much though. It doesn't get much hotter than with Banished.

I could not play my game without Twallan's mods! ET and OW, of course are necessary to control the bugs. I have not been able to play without Story Progression since before Pets or EA's SP just kills off all the infants, toddlers, and often Elders in my towns. As well as other issues. Master Controller gives me so much control over my town I would also consider it necessary!  I use about 35 of his mods altogether (including modules). I was so impressed with Twallan's professionalism and dedication, among other things, I was sad when he retired. He gave so much to the community and i am glad to see that others have banded together to continue his work!

I also have TS3 installed on a SSD and it decreased the loading time considerably for me. Before I (by I, I mean my husband) upgraded my computer this last time, I believe my loading times were up to 20-30 minutes. The other big wait for me was loading CAS but using Master Controller allows me to compress all the presets so it loads pretty fast now.  I do still start getting lag in Build/Buy after awhile, which is frustrating as I spend so much time building/designing lots. I also make Huge towns and after a certain limit SP will start to lag a bit, but it is worth it to be able to play the way I want to.

I wish it was not the only game of its kind.

i think it s when the game do a shuffle in citizens (shuffle their jobs for matching houses vs jobs), now i am at almost 1400 citizens, it started to take like 4-5 secs freezes every 30-60 secs

20 to 30 minutes?! Wow, and I was complaining about 2 or 3 minutes. :D

It was indeed a sad day when Twallan sent out word of his retirement, even when it wasn't really a surprise. The community is doing a good job though at NRaas. I have about 30 mods of his too, next to several hundreds of other cc. But nowadays I mostly build, and don't play much anymore. I lost interest in the gameplay. My wife still plays though, while I manage her mods. :)

Luke kind of reminds me of Twallan. Twallan, although more talkative than Luke, never said much about his private life. He didn't really say much more than needed ever. But he did listen to the community and delivered a professional product.

2-3 minutes is what I have now; just enough time to make a cup of tea. :D

I had pretty much sworn off all mods and CC after Sims 2 because I had some horrible experiences with it then. Twallan changed my mind, and his mods really did save my game and make it playable again. I do have some tuning mods by some other modders with good reputations that I use, as well. More quality-of-life mods then necessary ones.

CC is a slippery slope for me. At first I said I would not have any, but once I started using mods, I had to get some CC skins to replace the EA plastic one. Then, some better eyebrows and  some hairstyles that were almost entirely missing (like long hair). Then more hairs and some better, more subtle makeups. Pregnancy clothes, as there is so little of it, and clothing for elders, teens, and children soon followed.  And so forth. I now have more hairs and clothes and such then I want to admit (but not a huge amount compared to others!).

I did tell myself I would not use any build/buy CC, as I have to draw the line somewhere. But I have downloaded some tulips, paintings, and rugs. I have not installed them yet but  it is only a matter of time. Some of the build CC looks so amazing! It is becoming difficult to resist!

I spend a lot of my time building now, though I do still play at times. I have a 20 generation genetics legacy I have been playing for 1 or 2 years now (I forget) but I am only on the 8th generation so far. I have committed to finishing it out so I will eventually. I like it because with each generation I switch towns and build it up and fill the new neighborhood (I like micromanaging everyone/the town). TS3 is one of the few games that can so completely take up my thoughts with all the various aspects of it, that I can just play and not think. Banished also does this for me, but not as completely.

I'd love some recommendations on quality TS3 hairstyles, as I find most of the ones I tried to be mediocre at best. But maybe we should take this conversation to the Other Games (http://worldofbanished.com/index.php?board=11.0) section, before people think this thread is about 900 Sims in a town. :D

Banished is still somewhat cpu intensive and not quite optimized graphically either.  Lagging is going to start @ 1,00 to 1,200.  I think way back in the beginning someone found that the lagging could be reduced by reducing the number of barns you have.  Might be worth experimenting with.

@RedKetchup - 1400!  The freezes really slow you down at that population!

@solarscreen   yeah it s starting to be super annoying, it last 10 secs now :'(

if i put the number by default of farmers for each crops ... i already passed the 500, but i decided of a plan, and what i decided for this contest so i m trying to stick with my battleplan :)

No, I am just on my second town, still learning. I'm pretty good at playing games though  ;) And this game is ideal for a bean counter like me.

I only have a couple hundred farmers. One per farm. Does assigning more farmers to the same acreage gain you any benefit? I have nearly 400 laborers available.

If they are not getting all their crops in before the frosts kills it, then putting more on can help.

Normally I don't have problems with this but I realize a short growing season is a possibility. Is there some way to see this coming in advance or do you just have to keep them assigned full time?

Post by: salamander on June 16, 2014, 06:57:36 AM
I don't know of any way to predict when an early frost will occur.  Even on mild or moderate climate, occasional early cold weather can reduce your yield for that year.  That's one of the reasons having a decent reserve of food in storage is important.

Putting more farmers on a field can increase the chances that a harvest will be completed before cold weather sets in, and it gives you a safety margin if a farmer decides to go idling about, but there's a limit -- the max possible yield of a field is based on size, and once you've reached a number of assigned farmers that can reliably bring in the harvest, there's no point in assigning more.  If you do, you basically have a mouth to feed that's not really doing anything useful.

I usually only assign an extra worker if I notice crops dying in frost multiple years.

I read early on that barns may slow things down. See if you can eliminate any barns from your village. I know it may be difficult!

Well, that's what I read.  I build them and then come back and see if they are even being used.  I have been trying to balance trade and making sure I have enough food for everyone to eat.

I just remembered; last night I got the "Established" achievement, that is 300 population after 100 years. Course my town is somewhat bigger that that,  ;) but I didn't even notice it had been running that long until the achievement popped up.

I've been trying a trade-based town lately, and I've found that a lot of the barns that I figured (actually tried doing the math) I'd need turn out not to be used.  I've been doing as much de-construction as I have construction trying to get things sorted out and balanced.

Well, space-wise if they are always empty and you need the space for other things, I guess there could be too many. I have read that having too many barns when you population gets over 1k can cause lag, I am not sure how accurate this is though.

I heard that rumor, too. The only thing I can say for sure is that SOMETHING caused serious lags on my system around 1000 pop.
