What are they? MP3? flac? ogg? ...
If one adds sounds where do they go?
.wav i think
That's correct, they are wav. Luke mentioned it in one of his dev blogs.
Ugh! Lossless but very big. Luke should consider something smaller like .flac
Luke said when he will have turned everything to OpenGL (and linux comp) that the audio will need to be in wma format
wma format? That stands for Windows media audio.

That is not the default for Linux and should not be used. Linux default is pulse code modulation, but being a Swiss army knife kind of system it will handle just about anything. A lossless protocol like FLAC would be generally acceptable to most systems, but I am not sure about WMP.
EDIT: Just checked one of my common applications (Muse Score) and it cannot save in wma. It is quite happy with wav, flac, ogg, and several xml formats.
I would also suggest to use flac (which is basicly a zipped wav).
