This comes from profession.rsc. It is in a section entitled "RandomSelection _deathSelector". It is my guess, from observation in the game, that "Years" is how often the dice are rolled for a death in that profession, and "Population" is "one in".

The first season he was glossed over with the phrase "...and the rest,..." but in seasons two and three, he was glorified in the phrase, "....the Professor and Mary Ann,..."

Yeah, really. I thought maybe I was just suffering a streak of bad luck in the one game where I had a stonecutter die every season.
