Title: Abandoned - Newport - Story 12
Post by: Abandoned on April 14, 2017, 04:46:35 AM
Intro

This is the 12 story in the Smallville series, it tells the tale of the 8th expedition to leave that town.  This small group volunteered to go in search of a new waterway when Smallville's main river dried up becoming little more than a small stream.  They left shortly after the last expedition which headed upriver to investigate the source of the river's problem, that group established Lakeland of story 11.  This group headed east and will establish the settlement of Newport.

The map is seed # 167329170  plain-dry, Small, Mild, disasters On, Forester Start (Multiple Start Mod).

The start condition consists of 3 families with a small amount of supplies in a cart and a forester building, no seeds or livestock.

Most mods used are 1.0.6 but a few are 1.0.7, most I have used before but some I have not.  The mods are:  New Maps, Multiple Starts, Banished Professions, RK Minimized Status, New Flora, Wildlife, CC Light Rain, Trader Accepts All, A lot of Seeds Trader, Chicken Coop, Colonial Houses, Forest Outpost, Better Fields, Black/White Cattle, Buildable Storage Carts, Country Little House, Decorative Plants, Fenceless Pastures, Firewood Storage, Garden Shed, Gift Shop, Greenhouse, Houses for Sale, Idle Small Fisherman Dock, Longer Living Orchards, New Trees, Old Hunter Hut, 1:1, Sample White Chicken, Slink Hogs, Smallville Sign, Small Well, Specialized Stockpiles, Storage Crates, Tiny Chopper, Market, Mines, Town Hall & Well, Trader, &Quarry, Vegan Scarcrow, Vegetable Garden, Village School, Washing Mod, Water and Other Decorations, Wooden Signs, Workplace.

I have not as yet updated my game to version 1.0.7 and this is the first map I have ever played with disasters On,  So weary traveler, I hope this map and story does not turn out to be a disaster.

hi @brads3 , no didn't give up.  Tried Fountain High Society mod, icons missing, couldn't build some buildings, no story there.  Tried CC but problems with freeze ups, couldn't risk starting a story.  I am glad BL is posting separated mods, I liked the Natives and deco crops & animals.  The terrain mod could be a dozen stories right there, who knows.  I also finished all but 2 of the vanilla achievements and rewrote my mod list and notes. I just had to do a story when I saw the new trading post @kid1293 made, so a planned Springfield was put on hold in favor of Newport.  Glad you like my stories.  :)  Thanks again, kid  :)

Chapter 1

Wide spread flooding of recent years brought many survivors to Smallville.  We were one of the small groups who volunteered to leave to help alleviate overcrowding and food shortages caused by the main river drying up and cutting off the food supply from Pumpkin Hollow.  We hoped to find a new trade route nearby.  We were foresters, woodcutters, and botanists and there was little need for our services in Smallville now other than providing firewood, building carts, and repairing old buildings.  There was no room for new construction and most of the forest was now cropland.

There were 6 of us with 4 young children.  Maximille & Belena had a one-year old and an infant, Muhammed and Anti (a flood survivor) had her younger sister and a newborn, and Gertrand and I, Katelynne, were just married.  It was late winter when we left, we wanted to travel while the ground was still frozen so the cart of supplies would be easier to pull.  We spend the night at the old boarding house across the once main river and set off the next morning crossing the small frozen creek behind the boarding house and heading east into the morning sun.

The going was rough, we found a new branch of the small creek and followed that but the hills along side were pretty steeper.  Our cart tipped once after sinking into soft ground, that must be when we lost our sack of vegetable seeds but we still had our seedlings.  When we finally emerged into a large open plain it was spring, the time of fresh starts and new beginnings.  We erected a Smallville sign and a signpost with an arrow pointing back that way and another arrow pointing the way we were headed.  We etched on the name Newport.

It took several more days to cross the wide plain toward the river we saw in the distance.  We built a forester station in a clearing a short distance from that river.  We could stay in the station until we built houses and we could also keep watch from the tower.  After the floods there were numerous reports of wild animal attacks.  We saw only deer.

We were very happy to discover plenty of wild foods growing around our clearing, especially wild oats, and we were delighted to see flowering dogwoods, lilacs, and tulips.  They were just beautiful, and there were wild roses and my favorite wild blue flax too.  We collected foods, built a hunter hut with residence and 2 other houses.  We built a well and had wash out on the line, it was beginning to feel like home.

Autumn was beautiful with a warm sunny golden glow and the smell of autumn leaves and firewood smoke filled the air.  We made some hide coats and iron tools and build a school so Anti's little sister would not miss getting an education, Anti would be teacher.  We gathered wild foods before the weather turned cold, just like we learned back in Smallville.  We were well prepared for our first winter and didn't mind the snow since we had so little rain this year.  In late winter, Chelly, was the first child born in Newport, followed by our daughter, Lotte.  Camericky, the first boy, waited until early spring of year 2 to arrive.

did you try the fountain lite version?? i still use that 1. it doesn't mess with my icons. i understand the testing mods. seems that is all i have done lately too. haven't had a good play in a while. i start and stop many times.each time i test and start to get used to a mod, there is  a new mod or a new update. and there are still glitches with the new limits or  other conflicts. been changing mod orders and restarting a lot.not complaining. the testing and new mods is fun. i just haven't found a zone. i keep adjusting my game play.
new 1.75 CC is slower to load. for some reason with the graphics near the trees the scroll rate slows down also. if you can find the journey version just before the 1.07 update ,it actually loads better and faster. it would work under the 1.07 as well since the limits weren't changed yet.
i did upgade mine to 1.7 and the CC to 1.75 . i hoped it would fix some of the conflicts i was having but it added others as well.most of my mods are still older though.

@brads3 the cc version I have is the last one for 1.0.6 version 1.71.  It worked okay on flat plains, slowed down when it snowed but with all things wild and tree change starts it froze up completely, had to cnt alt del.  I did download the Fountain Lite but haven't used it yet, still have some older mods yet to try, and so many new ones, oh my goodness.  Here is chapter 2 with Newport's new port.  :)

Chapter 2

Having a newborn to tend,  I stayed close to home and made hide coats and linen clothes, Gertrand took over as forester.  Muhammed began making iron tools.  In spring of year 2, Newport's population grew by 2 more when Lanniel and Caldona arrived.  The nomads were flood survivors who had sought higher ground.  They had seen our sign, they knew of Smallville's reputation of welcoming nomads, but they did not want to go back through the hills to get there.  We invited them to stay with us.

By late spring, we had a small barn and greenhouse built by the river and a house for Lanniel and Caldona next to the school.  Lanniel was impressed with the number of wild bees in the area, he set up a small gatherers shed with honey pots and began seeking wild honey.  He said he could set up a backyard hive for anyone who wanted one.  We said we'd think about it.

It was another hot dry summer, we built another well near our house.  In early autumn I became botanist in the greenhouse tending the seedling we brought from Smallville.  Seedling were their main trade good, we hoped it would be ours.  We welcomed the cold and snow of winter and constructed our trading post near the greenhouse.  Build from freshly cut pine it had a bright welcoming glow especially in the snow.  We hoped a river boatman would find us and bring us a lot of seeds.

Nice to see you and your Smallvillers (can you say so in English?) back in action!

Maybe @RedKetchup can make a new version of his old greenhouse, that produces seedlings, just to give you some eye candy. And even if the design of the new greenhouse is nicer, the old one isn't any crap!

Chapter 3

Spring of year 3 arrived and so did 2 more weary travelers, Bronso and Taliann.  He took Muhammed's spot fishing upriver and she took my place working in the greenhouse.  They had the builders build the most fabulous looking house with a small tower, they called it their happy haven.  And we were all happy when in early autumn the first river boatman arrived at our new port.

Reddy the seed merchant did indeed bring a lot of seeds, 9 varieties including wheat seeds.  We only had enough trade goods for 1.  He didn't want our wild honey, there was plenty in these parts but he was happy to take our seedlings and tools, but not so happy with the heavy iron.  It would slow him down even though the current here was very swift now.   He would see if Mountain Mines or Monkstown downriver would take it otherwise he'd have to take it all the way to Riverboat Junction.  There were now 2 new tributaries leading there.  Upriver were Lakeland and Pumpkin Hollow. His route was a short one so he would be back soon.  So we decided to take peach seeds, it would be a few years before harvest and our food supply was good and holding steady at present.

Lannil began restocking the trading post despite being busy helping at home.  He and Caldona just had their 1st child and she was recovering slowly. He stopped gathering honey to become our trader, our honey supply would be good for quite a while.

The light rain in late autumn turned to snow so we had time to decide where to put the peach orchard.   Our forest radius here was extra large so we decided that near its border would be a good spot, close to town center but taking up little nearby forest land.  We also decided we should have a town hall where we could have regular meetings to discuss plans for future town growth.

In early spring of year 4 the town hall was completed and a road extended north to where Taliann planted the peach orchard.  Bronso stopped fishing to take over her place working in the greenhouse but we did not have enough seedlings to trade when Reddy returned as promised with 7 varieties of seeds this time. He said he would always bring a good selection so there was no need to special order.  We might want to consider building another port with a pen if we wanted livestock.  He'd spread the word among river boatmen that we were in the market.  That was something to think about.

Shortly thereafter 2 more nomads arrived;  Connell and Ashawanda build a pretty blue country little house with storage leantos and took over tending the peach trees.  At the town hall welcome to town meeting, they said there was plenty of iron for tools and good hunting spots for hide coats up there; it might be a good spot for Newport's 2nd trading post.

In early summer Bronso and Taliann had their 1st child and our population grew to 21.  In early autumn, Redd returned with 8 types of seeds but still we lacked enough trade goods.  He said not to worry, he'd be back often.  We weren't worried, we had no spare workers to plant and tend fields right now anyways.  As always, we all helped gather wild foods and herbs to fill our pantries before winter.

Chapter 4

Newport's population continued to grow.  In autumn of year 4 our son Handle was born and in early winter Millar was born to Lanniel and Caldona.  Spring of year 5 brought 2 more weary travelers,  Delvis and Lakena.  They built a small house and shed in a pretty grove of birch trees just outside the forester's reach.  Delvis would plant the cabbage seeds we just got from the boatman, the price of the wheat seeds was a little to steep for us just then, 4,000 trade goods.  In late spring Garris was born to Connell and Ashawanda, our peach farmers in the blue house.  They were happy to have the new well built next to their house.  In winter, Bronso and Taliann in the happy haven house had their 2nd child, Deforces.  Our population had grown to 27, 14 adults and 13 children.

In late spring of year 6, Landy and Ofelisha arrived.  They had some experience making tools and coats so they built a pretty blue bungalow up by the peach orchard where the new workshop and trading post with livestock pen were being built.  They built the house facing the river, the view was spectacular and you could actually smell the fragrance of the first peach crop ripening in the summer sun.

Late summer brought a much needed light rain and the return of Reddy the seed merchant.  Delvis the farmer said he could only tend the one 10' x12' field so we sent the merchant on his way with a small sack of fresh picked peaches.  The first harvest was a good one, 700 peaches.  When the seed merchant returned in late autumn we bought squash seeds.  A new field would be cleared by Delvis' farm with the hope that somehow next spring we could get it planted.

Chapter 5

Year 7 began with a nice light rain that really greened things up fast turning winter into spring. The new field did not get cleared until late spring when 3 flood survivors arrived, a widow, Valoridan, with 2 teenage children, Nico age 16 and his sister, Shastity age 14.  They built a lovely wood and stone house and everyone in town just loved the rocking chair Nico, who was now man of the house, built for his mother so she could sit on the front porch and look out over the cropfields.

Their arrival was followed by an outbreak of tuberculosis.  The disease came and went so fast I can't tell you how many were even sick, no one died but we thought it a good idea to find a spot for a cemetery.  It was built by late winter along with a lodging house near the town hall.  A garden shed was built in the forest up north not far from the peach orchard. I took some seedlings and went to help out there until we could spare someone to be the forester. Landy and Ofelisha in the blue bungalow just had a baby girl so Gertrand went up there too to make the tools in the workshop.  Landy said they often had to wait for logs for building or tool making so the garden shed and forester should be a big help.

It was a good thing we built the lodging house when we did because in late spring of year 8, 9 nomads arrived from Smallville, 7 adults with 2 children.  The food shortage there had eased somewhat, Smallville has been getting food shipments by canoe from Lakeland.  Problem was the small creek froze in winter so a food rationing system was put in place.  Like us, they volunteered to help ease the shortage by leaving.  We gladly welcomed them. Rigobertrand became the new forester, he and Shasity, the daughter of Nico and Valoridan, built a small house right next to the garden shed.  Another newcomer became fisherman at the new pier and moved with his family up there too.  Another family built a small house by the cropfields and would plant the wheat seeds next year that we bought in late summer.  When asked, Reddy the boatman said Lakeland was not a stop on his trade route, with his light cargo he could not risk crossing that big lake, he stayed along the east shore out of the wind bypassing their port altogether.

In early autumn the gift shop that Rodolf built was completed.  He actually migrated to Smallville from the North, in fact, he once worked in Santa's workshop at the North Pole Fishing Hole.  Yes, can you believe it?  We were a little skeptical ourselves until he began producing hide coats and iron tools, even some firewood and ale. Yes, ale, what a treat, we each got a bottle.  He planned to add a 2nd story house above the gift shop, he and his family were still living in the lodging house.  Delvis the farmer had a special treat for us that winter also.  He had a large amount of venison in his storage shed and time to spare when the cabbage was harvested so he set up a small butcher block in his yard and made us all some tasty venison sausages.  Year 8 was a very good year.

This upload problem has happened to me as well.
I even tried to reduce the size the pictures, no luck.
It appears to be certain hours of the day, not sure.

I really like the way you build your settlements @Abandoned .
It is the way of colonizing immigrants, everyone got their own piece of land.
When I build, it always become clusters of buildings.
Crowded, busy and not so good looking.

hi @kid1293 , I had the upload picture problem only once before and discovered that I had only renamed the screenshot instead of saving it in an acceptable format.  That wasn't the case here and strangely it is only the 3 pics taken in winter that won't post.  So I got the screenshots out of the recycling bin and reconverted them. I'll try to post the last 2 again.   I also had a problem early on trying to save as draft or posting and lost the chapter.  Since then, I type the chapter in Wordpad program then copy paste here.  Good thing this has spell check.   :)

I always reach the point in every map where it gets a little too crowded for my tastes too, your tiny mods and workplaces delay that overcrowding, and look really wonderful I might add. I dislike turning nomads away.  I also especially like houses or other building that a 2nd floor house can be added to it.  And the crop fields provide such nice open spaces and it is so nice to have a reliable seed merchant.  :)

I hope I can get the next chapter done later today.  Let's see if I can get the last 2 picture of chapter 5 posted here.

Nope, didn't work, says web page has expired.  Oh well, better luck next chapter I hope.  :)

it happends to me often. and i always tried to figure out why it is happening and i dont really know.
we have an unlimited storage plan but it is like we are automatically limited but need an admin to make the limite go up further each time we hit it....
or their server harddrives are full and their need to regulary sweep some space ^^

i dunno , it was the most plausible answers to my brain questions ^^

Chapter 6

Year 9 did not go nearly as well.  It started out okay with 8 more nomads arriving.  We welcomed the new workers, a hunter, fisherman, honeyseeker, our 3rd forester, and a 2nd builder.  We needed more housing for the new families.

That spring Newport suffered its 1st tragic loss, Ofelisha from the blue bungalow died in childbirth along with the newborn.  Muhammed and Anti's girl, Chelly age 7, moved in with Landy to help out with little Gracy who was only 2 at the time.  We were all saddened by the loss and wished we had a chapel built.

We did have several more houses built as the new wheat crop glistened in the summer sun and the crop field next to it waited for the pumpkin seeds we just bought to be planted next spring.  We town founders remembered the bright orange pumpkins in the field behind the school back in Smallville.  Our new schoolhouse was built a short distance from the crop fields.

By late winter we were short of both logs and firewood.  We immediately took to the woods to help cut trees and a new tiny chopper was set up in the north.  We prayed no one would freeze this winter, we should have built that chapel.  And a hospital.

I use a small trick at the beginning of a game, if I have an orchard seed from the start: I plant the orchard as soon as I can. After it's planted, it can be closed, and need no worker, just a little space. When it's grown, I harvest once (or sometimes a few more times, if I'm not as short on logs as I thought I would be), then I cut the trees, harvest the logs and plant it again. To be shure to have a supply on logs/fruit/nuts continuously, I plant a new orchard of this kind each year, until the first can be cut.

Another trick to manage the log crisis is to build a small trading port for building materials. Kid has one in is raw house mod.

Post by: Abandoned on April 22, 2017, 05:22:48 AM
@Nilla , thanks so much for the orchard tip.  I will keep that in mind. I don't usually place an orchard early in the game because I can't spare a worker, didn't know I could leave the orchard unattended after planting.

This map's starting condition had no starting seeds at all.  Choosing different mods and start conditions makes Banished even more of a strategy game for me.  Wood shortage here was totally my fault.  Well, maybe not totally, I'm using @RedKetchup minimized status box that I really like, but I didn't keep a close enough eye on the log supply because I also started too many buildings at the same time, was eager to build @kid1293  fantastic houses for sale.  On top of that, I spend way too much time gazing at the beautiful scenery thanks in part to @tanypredator New Flora and BL New Trees.  Thanks a lot guys!  LOL, seriously, thank you all for the great mods. :)

didn't you build a forester earlier in this town??? i usually find myself adding 1 after i get the start village set up. it gives a good way to add a gatherer and hunter area.
Title: Re: Abandoned - Newport - Story 12

@brads3 the forester start condition has the forester stand built already so it is right smack in the middle of town from the beginning. These multiple starts are challenging, no seeds or livestock or stockpile this start.  I am also using Wildlife mod which increases radius, a lot of territory for the 1 forester I assigned to start.  I later built the garden shed forester and tiny chopper up north to get wood and firewood up there.  Clearing land for fields and buildings added to the log supply for a while but then I started too many building without paying attention, foresters couldn't keep up.  I add more foresters when nomads show up but they are uneducated.  Education rate bad. :(  Played a while before, things are improving, hope to get next chapter posted later.

Chapter 7

Spring of year 10 arrived and so did 4 more nomads followed by an outbreak of influenza.  We still had no hospital but the disease passed quickly.  We did however have a pretty little colonial chapel next to the town cemetery.

We had another good harvest that year and again our croplands were beautiful, green cabbages, yellow squash, golden wheat, and bright orange pumpkins.  We now had a grinder and baker's oven. The townspeople took turns grinding the wheat into flour and we women baked delicious herb bread.  When Reddy the seed merchant returned in early autumn we gave him several fresh baked loaves.  He said we were his favorite customer.  Judging by the number of seeds he always had, we thought we were probably his only customer.  But no matter, he was most definitely our favorite most reliable river boatman. It was only our 10th year and we had 4 crops planted including wheat.  We just wished we could get some of our bountiful harvest back to Smallville.  We gave Reddy a jar of wild honey to go with the bread before he went on his way.

On a cold winter day, we were thrilled when a livestock merchant arrived at our tiny north port with sheep.  We only had enough trade goods for 3 of them.  He went on his way with a still warm-from-the-oven loaf of bread leaving us with visions of soft wool coats and warm woolen mitten.

By late winter our new colonial hospital was completed near the greenhouse, a convenient location but a safe distance from the center of town.  It was bigger than we needed and we hoped we would not be needing it often.

Chapter 8

We had just barely enough logs and firewood to see us through until spring of year 11.  We were also short of iron but our tool and clothing supply was good.  We still needed housing, we had 22 families but only 19 houses.  Newport's population was now 67, 39 adults, 7 students, and 21 young children, only 18% of us were educated.

That was one of the most beautiful springs I could remember.  Although the air was cool the sun felt warm upon one's skin, and a gentle breeze shimmer the newly opening birch leaves.  Wild roses and daffodils were already blooming and the wild bees were just beginning to emerge and all seemed right with the world.

We added a forester, hunter, and fisherman to our workforce when 11 more nomads arrived.  Vestevan the seed merchant arrived at the north port shortly before Reddy returned to our main port.  We bought no seeds this time.  Our crop fields were even more beautiful this year.  The cultured flax we bought earlier in the year got planted in time for a full harvest.  Sadly Valoridan the farmer died of a weak heart that winter.

I would wish such a spring, too! It's soon may. This morning it snowed!  >:( :(

You have very few educated; do you somehow plan how you use them? You are short on logs and firewood. In that case, I would try to let foresters and woodcutter be educated. It's not always easy but I always try to locate uneducated, where they do as little harm as possible and educated close to blacksmiths and tailors. You can use the small chopper from Kid, it's cheap, and build one where many educated live and/or let people swap houses. I find it better to let uneducated do things like farming and fishing, where they don't destroy valuable material (like blacksmiths tailors or choppers) . The same with laborers when they collect iron and stones; uneducated get less material from each pile and less log from each tree. I always try to avoid that as far as possible.

@Nilla good thing about spring snow is it doesn't stay around too long.  Our spring here isn't too bad this year, but for the 3rd time now we've had sudden drops in temperature.  Yesterday, opened all the windows, went outside for awhile, temperature dropped 20 degrees in 20 minutes time.  Sunny though, looks like spring  :)

I have tried to manage the uneducated and housing and jobs but I just don't have the talent for it like you do.  I got very frustrated when I thought I had it good they up and move or change jobs.  With this slower population growth I have more jobs that need educated workers than I have educated workers.  Still find it better to have uneducated nomad workers than no workers, it does seem to balance out later in the game as children finish school.  Too bad nomads can't be schooled.  I use kid's tiny chopper all the time, I was just playing for awhile and built the 3rd one.  Log and firewood supply has improved.  :)

In spring of year 12, 11 more nomads arrived.  One of them would become the tailor in the new clothes store making warm coats from our sheep's wool and deer hides.  Another newcomer would be gatherer in the hut being built up north.  One new house had just been finished in that area and another small house was being built.  There was the sound of busy workers everywhere.  Our forests were thriving and our log and firewood supplies were improving.  Sadly one of the foresters was killed by a falling tree.

There was so much going on around town that I did not even notice that my firstborn daughter, Lotte age 10, was no longer at home. Yes really, can you believe it?  What made it even worse was that I was the town's official census taker.  What can I say?  Well, Cleonard, the livestock merchant, had just brought us 4 chickens when I discovered her to be missing, and we all remembered the story of how Smallville's Jeral and Lian ran off together stowing away on one of the riverboats.  I began going door to door inquiring if anyone had seen her.  Newport was still quite a small town so it wasn't long before I found her.  She was living with Nico the farmer in another abode. She said as soon as she got the chickens settled that she picked up from the port, she was coming home to tell me where she was.  It was such a relief to have found her, and let me tell you, it was really nice sitting on that rocker on her front porch and looking out over the crop fields.

Those crops just barely made it into storage that year.  An early cold spell brought snow and an early winter.

Chapter 10

It was still snowing in early spring of year 13 when the linen weaver workshop was finished.  The new tailor would weave linen clothes from cultured flax while the clothes store next door made wool and warm coats.  The workplace tailor next to our house was still making hide coats.  A short distance away by the old school, a gatherer set up shop and a herbalist began collecting herbs over by the hospital.

The far west side of town was also undergoing a lot of new development. A storage barn was built along with 2 cozy cottages, with a 3rd one planned.  An orchard of plum trees was planted and a bee hive set up to help pollinate the fruit trees and vine crops.  A workplace brewery would use honey or wild honey to make mead.  Another crop field was being cleared for wheat for ale or more flour.

As soon as the crops were harvested and stored away, the laborers went to gather iron.  The fact that the available iron was some distance away now was brought up at the town meeting.  There was still  plenty of it and more across the river but if the need arose we could build a tiny mine in the hill by the new wheat field.  The Smallville signpost was a short distance behind that hill and there was still some iron there to be had.  We had warmer clothes so could spend the winter collecting the iron.

Progress continued to be made throughout year 14.  Land was being cleared behind the school for a walnut orchard, nut bread would be a nice alternative to the herb bread we were use to.  We did not as yet have walnut seeds but it was comforting to be able to plan ahead knowing our reliable river boat merchant would be bringing them soon, if not on the next visit then certainly the one after that.

Late spring brought 12 nomads and an outbreak of tuberculosis.  Doc Marlow immediately opened the hospital, Lotte took over a kettle of chicken soup, and the 3 patients made a quick recovery.  The nomads also brought the need for yet more housing.  The 3rd cozy cottage was finished and a 2nd happy haven was built near the port.  Several other small house were under construction but the lodging house was full and we still had several homeless citizens.

We had a good surplus of food, our crop fields produce well, but as was our custom that we learned back in Smallville, we took to the woods to gather what wild foods we could find before winter.  Everyone's pantry was well filled, and thanks to our 3rd tiny chopper our firewood piles were full too.  As expected, Reddy brought walnut seeds, and a new hunter's lodge and residence was under construction.  By the time the snow began to fall, everyone had a roof over their heads.

can i be a critic?or is it crytic? based on your population:30 houses+boarding house? 12 crop fields? food storage= 6 months only.no surplus to handle the next set of nomads? do i dare ask what you are trading out?

@brads3 critic welcome  :)  I would have to check number on houses but I think still less than 30.  Crop fields only 6 plus 2 orchards so far, 1 field inedible flax.  Trading so far has been mainly seedlings, plus iron tools, hide & linen clothes, and herbs in exchange for seeds at the main port and sheep and chickens at the other.  Waiting for more sheep or wool.  The next nomads do not stay, must increase food and education rate.  Must also go play the game and finish next chapter, I didn't get to it at all yesterday.  :)

edit, make that 3 orchards, peaches, plums, walnuts. , more than 30 houses, and discovered I had trading post marked to stock ale but brewer making mead.  glad you criticed ... smiley face.

Chapter 11

At the early spring of year 15 town meeting several towns people complained that our now thriving forest was obstructing easy access to workplaces and storage facilities and those living along the river said the trees were blocking their scenic views.  Problem trees were marked and laborers systematically began cutting and added them to our stockpiles.

In spring, 14 nomads arrived but did not stay.  They were on their way to Smallville.  After their experience with the devastating floods, they wanted their children to have the best survival education possible and that was to be had in Smallville.  We could have used more laborers but their leaving meant our education rate would also improve.  We gave them as much food as they could carry to take with them to Smallville and we gave them directions to the signpost.

The extra logs allowed more building projects throughout the year.  Not far from the new hunter's lodge we constructed a gatherer and an herbalist hut, and began some housing.  Another fishing pier and house was under construction and 2 bridges crossed the river. There was plenty of stone and iron to be had and a lot of good flat farmland should the need arise.  Like our forests, Newport was thriving.

Note:  Mods added while game in progress during chapter 12 : KidStoneHouse Addon v1, KidYard Cover v1.2, and while I was at it and kid's Alotofseeds trader does such a fine job bringing seeds, I also added DS brussel sprouts and DS carrots.  Also note: BL mod Trader Accepts All does not affect trading posts used in this map, perhaps only works with vanilla or cc ports.

Chapter 12

In early spring of year 16 we knew our efforts to increase our food supply had paid off.  We had 6 hunters, 8 fisherman, 7 gatherers, 1 herdsman, 1 beekeeper, and 10 farmers; 6 farmers tended crop fields, 3 took care of orchards, and 1 tended the chicken coop.  All produced well.  We felt a little guilty to have so much when others had so little.  We now had 43 homes and our education rate increased to 19%.  We were 100% healthy and happy.

Well, not everyone was happy with where we decided to put the new pasture for the 4 sheep that Cleonard the livestock merchant brought that spring.  Folks up north thought it should go by them but since all the storage facilities were well stocked with a wide variety of foods, it was decided it should go where the wool was most needed.  That made Erneice the clothes store tailor happy but Ashawanna, the weaver, next door thought that location should have a wild flax gatherer or another flax field.  The hunter, gatherer, and forester were not happy with the thought of losing land to either one of them.  They were somewhat pacified when we cleared stone from their work areas allowing more room for trees, herbs, and wild foods to grow.  We began adding stockpile coverings and paving dirt roads with stone, making everyone happy.

In late spring, 20 nomads arrived but did not stay, they were just passing through.  They were miners who came from the north and were headed to Mountain Mines; they heard there were riches to be had in their precious mines.  We could have used a few more laborers and farmers, our riches were in our forests and crop fields, but when Reddy returned with beans, potatoes, and corn seeds we had to decline.  Having just bought sheep, our seedling supply for restocking was already low.  When Reddy returned later in the year, we traded for vegetable seeds, a nice assortment of mixed vegetables.

In early winter of that year, year 16, we began building a second greenhouse near the north port hoping to have extra seedlings to trade for more livestock.  When Cleonard the livestock merchant returned in winter we only managed to buy 2 more sheep. Those miners that passed through did get us rethinking a tiny mine.  With coal our blacksmith could make better longer lasting steel tools, leaving more of the iron tools for trade.  Well, we'll think about it more next year.

you have the TP accepts all mod that NILLA needs. is it updated to work with the new flags or is that what isn't working across the TP's???

@brads3 I don't think that mod would help Nila, not for new flags.  If I would have seen Nila's post first I wouldn't have added my note here to avoid confusion.  I used it on one of my cc tests and on test of Fountain Lite where I also used specialized trader.  Traders took everything like herbs and ale.  I think I used vanilla port with cc, also took everything. This map neither trader accepts everything in trade, tiny trader it depends what trader comes just like it always does.  Better get back to the game and next chapter,  :)

Chapter 13

The new covering roofs were very popular, everyone wanted one and of course they wanted different sizes and colors.  Venessee, the wood chopper in the north, wasn't happy with the fact that the wood chopper in the south got a covering first but was very happy with it nonetheless.  The new tailor and weaver were worse than the last 2 when it came to bickering.  Thank goodness they were both happily married and not to each other.  Gertram the tailor wasn't happy with Kamiley's cover blocking the morning sun from his shop window.  Kamiley said they should trade places and he could work outside in the hot summer sun and smell the sheep.  Gertram said she was wasteful having to have her own storage shed for textiles built next to her shop when there was a good size shed right across from his.  She said if he didn't like it don't use it and later when a wool coat appeared in the shed, she took it out and tossed it into the sheep pen.

They were distracted from their squabbling when the boatman arrived with brussels sprout seeds and the discussion of field placement began.  Here we go again.  The boatman just left when 18 nomads arrived.  They came from the south where first they had floods then heat and drought, they were headed further north and would not stay.  They sure enjoyed plenty of cool water from our tiny well before they left.

Building projects continued even though, in autumn, Kathey the builder died in childbirth.  When winter came, the wood cutter in the south was pleased with the firewood storage shed build under her covering and Diniah, the herbalist, had a covering built over the plants outside her hut.  We ladies who got together regularly to clean the school, chapel, and hospital just loved the covering built by the hospital.  We would not have to wait till spring to wash the linens,  we could even hang things on the support beam if we ran out of room on the washlines.

Yes, after 18 years Newport was doing well.  We had a wide variety of crops to plant and plenty of firewood, daily struggles of life were a bit easier with warmer clothes, paved roads, and yard coverings.  We had a population of 145, 75 adults, 25 students, and 45 young children,  all healthy and relatively happy, and then ...

@brads3 I'm sorry, I just could not resist another cliffhanger, like TV daytime soap opera on Friday leaves you hanging till Monday.  Just thought I would make story into a suspense thriller or tornado horror story.  I know I was scared of what that thing was going to do, especially when I saw my favorite seed merchant in his riverboat.  Of course I couldn't say so in the story but I thought this tornado was really cool when I first saw it here, good graphic.  Had no idea what to expect with disasters on.

@kid1293 these little bannies are survivors, they live to plant crops another day.  To be continued: Chapter 14 coming soon, probably this afternoon yet.   :)

Chapter 14

Yes, in early spring of year 18 disaster struck.  The day began like any other spring day only quite a bit colder than the day before.  When the sky darkened we expected snow, but it began to rain.  We were surprised to hear distant thunder and then the wind began to pick up and the sound of the wind became frightening and then the frantic calls rang out around town that a tornado had touched down.  Someone in one of the happy haven towers saw it across the river moving this way.  If that wasn't bad enough, they also saw Reddy rowing his boat down river right into the path of the storm.   We were all terrified and prayed that Reddy would at least make it safely to shore.  We ran for shelter not knowing where to hide from this wrath of nature.  Trees were being uprooted and snapped like twigs, what would happen when this monstrous force hit our town?

Thank God we did not find out.  The funnel twisted and turned tearing up every tree in its path, but when it reached the river it veered off downstream before crossing over to continue its path of destruction.  Our town and buildings were spared but the storm took its toll, Rowlandel the fisherman was killed by the tornado, as was Gartha the forester, Sedric the gatherer, and Danich the herbalist. We laid our loved ones to rest and with heavy hearts we returned to our work.  There were fields to plant and there was no bickering now even though the new crop fields were a bit too close to the northern gatherer's hut.  Reddy, still shaken from his close call, went on his way.  He would bring the corn and carrot seeds back another time.

In late spring we welcomed 25 storm victims, two-time survivors actually.  They were railroad surveyors from the south whose camp was flooded out and rebuilt only to be blown apart by a tornado.  Part of the same storm system that past through here.  They too had suffered lost loved ones.  We consoled each other as best we could as they blended into our community. Houses were built, some very nice new stone ones too I might add, and crops were harvested and vegetables were stored and sorted.  The food storage shed wasn't quite suitable for the unsorted vegetables but Leniele, the home grower, said she would rather have a small workplace shed to store them in.  One would be built along with yet another schoolhouse.  One of her children and several others missed out on getting educated and we didn't want others to miss out because we were short of classroom space, and we would begin teaching survival skills.

Chapter 15

Spring of Year 19 was like every spring before except this year everyone was a bit uneasy and jittery every time the wind picked up or dark rain clouds rolled our way.  Jeddy brought carrot seeds, they got planted a bit later than the brussels sprouts and other crops.  Building projects continued.  More folks wanted sturdier stone houses now, in light of the force of last years tornado, I don't think it would make much difference but they sure were nice looking houses.   A new hunting lodge and residence was built some distance north of the croplands, to the west a tiny mine was dug in the small mountain there.  We would begin mining iron since the remaining surface iron was quite far away now.  We had plenty of laborers who could gather what they could before the cold and snow arrived.

Nico, my son-in-law, set up a workplace anvil next to the house of the mine overseer.  The miners were now producing coal and everyone in town was really impressed with how neatly Nico keep the coal stacked in crates.  His iron and log piles were also outstanding.  A covering storage shed was built for finished tools and extra blacksmithing supplies.  Nico at first said he didn't need a covering over his workplace but he changed his mind after the first cold autumn rain. He was glad to go home to a hot meal and warm fire.  He and Lotte were still living in another abode.  Gertrand was more impressed with our first granddaughter, Ammi, than he was with the stockpiles.

We had plenty of firewood that winter.  I heard those sturdy stone houses were nice and warm and used less firewood than the wood houses.

Chapter 16

In spring of year 20, our 2nd tiny mine was completed.  We now had 6 miners bringing up iron and coal.  Nico would have to add more crates and storage piles soon.  The storage shed was also near capacity.  More wells were constructed around town and 2 new crop fields were cleared.  The larger one would be planted with more mixed vegetable; our home grower said she could easily sort more than she was doing now.

In late spring, 21 nomads passed through on their way north. They too had horror stories to tell of floods, tornadoes, and tragic losses.  We had been extremely lucky indeed.  We gave them as much food and supplies as they could carry before they went on their way.

In early autumn, Lonza the general goods merchant arrived at the north port with wool and leather.  We had sufficient leather but Frien, the new tailor, often had to wait for sheep sheering to be done before making warm coats.  We traded for 100 bails of wool and it was a good thing we did.  In winter our main sheep pasture developed an infestation.  We had no idea what to do but when the sheep began dying we knew we had to do something.  It was late winter before we had a new field cleared.  By then we lost half our flock of sheep from the infested pasture.  We didn't take the time to build a fence so we hoped none of the remaining 5 would go astray.

Our new memorial chapel was completed in time to commemorate the 2 year anniversary of the tornado touchdown.  The chapel was constructed near the fishing pier in the forest where we lost our fisherman, forester, gatherer, and herbalist. Everyone in town agreed on the location, all the mothers in town agreed the chapel should have a cross, with all the troubles in the world today we needed more reminders of good versus evil.  We've all heard tales of thieving pirates, brutal stabbings, and poison mushroom soup.  Dear Lord, protect us all from such evils.

Chapter 17

In spring of year 21, another large group of displaced victims passed through.  We were a bit relieved they did not want to stay.  Newport already had a population of 196, 105 adults, 38 students, and 53 young children.  Our education rate was up to 29%, we would hate to see that go down. While checking statistics at the town hall, we took time to reassigned some of our laborers to other jobs.

The crops did extremely well that year, especially the brussels sprouts.  The carrots seemed to disappear as soon as they were harvested, a good thing since our storage units were filled to capacity.  We were all thrilled when the livestock merchant brought hogs and dairy cattle.  We were now forced to decide what to do about the infested sheep pasture that was still empty.  We took the chance and moved the sheep back hoping they would not be re-infested.  The 3 little pigs would be fenced in the vacated field where the sheep had been.  The 3 dairy cattle would have a large pasture across the river.  Most of the laborers were busy clearing the area when the call rang out ... FIRE

Oh no, a gatherers hut had caught fire.  I never saw the townspeople move so fast.  The nearest well was by the school so most of them headed for the river, the new snowfall not slowing them down.  Again our town was covered by a dark cloud.  When Reddy arrived with our sunflower seeds, he said he could see the billowing smoke from way upriver.  When the snow began to fall again we hoped it would help douse the flames but we could see the building was a total loss.  Unlike lightning, disaster does strike twice in the same place.  At least we lost no one to the flames.

Chapter 18

In year 22, we had the most beautiful field of sunny sunflowers. Folks walked all the way over from town just to look at them.  Another pretty site was the new farmstead on the other side of the river, 2 country farm houses, a large red barn, and plenty of room for the black and white cows to graze.  The workplace dairy was protected by a sturdy covering and a sorting stand and shed were ready for the new crop of vegetables to grow.  Earlier in the year, Reddy brought corn, beans, potatoes, and oat seed and we had enough seedling from our greenhouses to trade for them.  Thanks to our favorite seed merchant, after 22 years we did indeed have a lot of seeds.

So, weary traveler, our expedition accomplished what it set out from Smallville to do.  We found a new waterway and established our town of Newport and we survived 3 disasters while doing it. It's time to move on to greener pastures.

The End.
