00 Intro
I was so inspired by Abandoned and her stories, and I wanted to show my new terrain textures.
They will be used in a new mod - Out Of This World.
I post it here in Suggestions since it is a work in progress. I am open to comments but keep them
easy to make. This is not Star Wars. :)
This is just a short story used to show that an alien world can be very much like home.
The spaceships will not be in the new mod.
There is no need for them. The models are free
from OpenGameArt.org and CGTrader.com
I used them only to get some good pictures. :)
So - Welcome to Mennox.
01 - Background
We were a long distance from the mothership. The first thing that happened was a computer malfunction.
At that time we had prepared for landing on Mennox. Then all power was cut just when we could see
a clearing ahead. We landed on a strip of land, and we hoped that it would be long enough.
We survived, but the spaceship didn't.
We had traveled for generations, leaving the Earth when it was clear that the Earth had no future.
Ravaged by wars, natural disasters, and an extreme shortage of resources, every day could be the last.
We are four colonists sent out from the mothership to explore a planet with signs of life.
Well, there is life... Water, plants, and some kind of animals.
You can breathe the air. It has a metallic, primordial taste.
Our personal scanners showed all green.
The animals showed no aggression, but the survival pods were built immediately, just to be safe.
02 - Exploring
Hilber decided to walk along the river and check it out. He draws a crude map to follow.
Manuelah was reading medicine and was responsible for the medical equipment.
She could test things to see if they were okay to eat. She walks out among the trees
to gather plants.
Caden was very fond of the animals. She gave them small pieces of potato,
and they seemed to like her. These animals looked like some sort of pigs.
Caden was almost sure and she said that they oinked when they talked.
- So it is an oink, I said.
- No! It is an oinker.
- Okay. Do I write that in the logbook?
- Yes, we must know what we are talking about. They oink.
I stayed near the ship and examined what we could use from it.
Obviously the ships power system had overloaded and sent out a burst that killed
the ship's computers. I found the emergency transmitter but it wasn't activated.
The system was already cut off when we were going to land. I assume the transmitter
never saw a need to activate itself. We never crashed.
Manuelah came back with berries and roots that she said were safe to eat.
Hilber had tested to catch fish and he landed a few. Manuelah tested and
found nothing harmful with them.
Caden found a couple of mushrooms and tested to give them to the oinkers.
They ate them and looked like they were wanting more.
Caden asked me to build a place for the oinkers.
03 - Problem and solution
I must activate the emergency transmitter. It has a connector to the spaceship,
but I have not a clue how to make it work. I searched the spaceship and found a
spare power cell that was not burnt out. The transmitter didn't react to power
anywhere in the connector. I must be careful.
I took a break and pulled out a long metal box we could use as a water trough for
the oinkers. Manuelah brought some grass she said contained nutrients.
Sure enough. Four of the oinkers stayed close to the water trough. Caden would have
an easy job to watch them.
Hilber told me to drop my tries to activate the transmitter and help with collecting
firewood. Drop it? Yes! The transmitter had an impact sensor that felt any crash.
I climbed a tree with the box and dropped it to the ground. Nothing.
I tried again a bit higher up and this time... a light went on and started to blink!
It was sending a distress call. We were having dinner on fish, potatoes, and roots.
04 - Waiting
Time went by. We had a cold spell with snow! It was the first time for us.
Manuelah found herbs that would cure cold and slight sickness.
There were still clothes and tools in the spaceship, but we discussed making
some more permanent buildings. Hilber had ideas about energy-saving domes.
We would need more material. We spent time collecting resources and food.
All the time we looked at the emergency transmitter. Waiting.
05 - Found!
After the cold, things went on with our usual chores.
Hilber had mapped the area. He also learned how to take cuttings
from trees and plant them. They grew quickly.
Manuelah had lists of edible, and of dangerous plants. She also
had a good assortment of healing herbs.
Caden helped to collect food and branches. She took care of
the work with the oinkers and she washed and cooked.
I experimented with sap from the trees mixed with rock and iron.
It made good building material. Light and hard. Not flexible,
but it could be a good base for building houses.
I was inside the pod when the others shouted. No, they screamed.
I ran out and they pointed to the horizon. Two scout ships were
approaching over the trees. We were found!
06 - The end

We were going back to the mothership. The scouts dropped a message
telling us it would take a few days for a transporter to come here.
We had set out to explore possible planets for colonization.
We found one that was peaceful. It was full of resources, and it
sure looked good.
We had samples of everything we found and detailed notes of the area.
Manuelah said she would like to go here later. Maybe with Hilber.
:) Wow, really cool 8) a need for space. I like it. I hope your pet project will get some comments and suggestions. I like the story too. :)
@kid1293 ;D ;D ;D wow, wow, this is a great idea, I always secretly hoped that our Bannies would leave the earth and go out into space - great movement and a very nice surprise at the same time, I did not expect it from the esteemed master, it is a great gift - I really like this modest start - I knew Banished will always be on top of city building games. Love it, the more strange looking trees, vegie crops and animals the better.
Perhaps we should all look for what is out there in the free model world and then provide links and pictures of what we find.
You never know, the more eyes the better - something may be suitable

@kid1293 @Abandoned ;D I am glad that you like some of the things, I don't interfere with your projects, I just like to show you something too, it's not my work, "People - Earthlings " have huge fantasies - I'm it's a pity that I do not have such a talent as you modeling masters. .Our plants are also fantastic, you can create a completely different world in space - that was my little sample /? Talking about mushrooms. Here is a sample in this mod's colors.
Perhaps on the subject of mushrooms and veggies a simple re-size and colour change may do the trick.
Things grow very big in virgin soil. eg triple size purple strawberries on the new world with a minimum of two works required.
Then you could re-texture home grown, deep forest and some of fairy garden with the trader coming by a big shiney magic portal with space age looking buildings attached.
Is it possible to change the trader boat?
A clothes override wouldn't go astray.
PS - When I was in Sweden years ago I collected beautiful ceramic mushrooms that that white stems and red tops with white dots
I have it on good authority that the magic mushroom brew on the new planet is really out of this world.

I made a test model and it turned out well. I worked a lot on it,
and now we have 'mushroom' houses. :) Sh-rooms.
I will work more on this type of model.
What if I change the resource mushrooms to man-sized magic mushrooms?
They will spawn only occasionally, and a find would give
lots of food.
I must find a good name for them first.
I will drop the regular houses. Maybe I keep them in.
Those look cool 8) I would call them umbrella building or houses ( sunshades from hot solar sun) :)- stay away from mushrooms - you misunderstood. I said no to mushroom houses. They are to earthy and water based - this should be different things not copies, certainly not of things that are special to certain mods like Forest Deep mushrooms or Home Grown veggies. My idea of outer space would be more metal not more plant based. No magic

@kid1293 ;D These are just my suggestions - don't worry - if these houses - you have any difficulties - go to your project - ask for opinions or ideas - discussion? and that's how it is now - maybe it bothers you a bit - but I see that others also want to add something from you some new idea? I was looking for a general housing estate - maybe it will help you> I like domes with round windows the most, e.g. like in the project - hobbit houses? @taniu This space mod is Kid's project :) I will just throw in a few thoughts along the way, like I like the roof on that last picture you just showed - skylight. :) thanks for showing. I am sure Kid will consider all suggestions, he will have a lot of decisions to make. I think it will be interesting but will take time, we have other things coming up too.
Hope others will post their thoughts and suggestions too.
@kid1293 , I really like you idea, and your story! It will nice to have the Bannies venture to a new world. The buildings you made are very good. The tower buildings seem to suit a modern new planet and I imagine the roof is made of solar panels.
Those square houses that you thought were an odd design, I think are a good design for particular uses. They are fine for the new planet, but, also, I think they would work on earth in the south west type areas. They would also go with the buildings in your Tequila mod. They probably would blend in with some other mods.
The square building that you wondered if it was a school or hospital, it is suited for both.
That dome building is wonderful! It seems better suited not for a house, but some kind of special building. It makes me think of some kind of laboratory or an observatory of the skies.

It took some time to come to that decision, but I think it will be for the best.

A sort of mushroom/umbrella/canopy buildings.
I will see where it leads to.
I'm liking this style. I imagine the planet has heavy winds at times, and winds can move better around a round structure without risk of damage, or at least not as much damage as can be with a square shape.

The tailor building is very nice, Kid. :) Regarding the mod being more fantasy than science fiction, I prefer science fiction. Or, just the future on a new planet. I'm fine with names of work buildings being the regular names. Maybe the smith could be "tool manufacturer", and the tailor could be "Garment production". I would just call the hospital something like "Medical Care", or "Health clinic". It is easier for players to have names of buildings be easy to understand, especially those whose native languages are not English.

Maybe for the tool maker it could be "implement fabricator" or "implement fabrication". "Garb creator" for the tailor? "Wholeness Center" for the hospital?

Here I come with my idea of a new material that started in the prelude story.
I decided (after long thinking and testing) to make a Wood Alloy.

So - a new material. To make it you only need logs. A lot of them.
I have a Mud Works that digs for soil minerals and fuses them into the logs.
Logs in - Wood Alloy out.
The Mud Works can be upgraded to a Mineral Plant (fancy building) :)
which is both cheaper and faster. But it costs Wood Alloy and Glass.
The Mud Works also makes Glass from the soil. :)
Logs in - Glass out.
Oh, do you like grass on the ground? I am testing now. See picture
edit - The Mud Works is almost free to build. It costs no resources, just work.
@galensgranny Implements Fabricator are far too long to have on an icon or in the menu.
I could have Tools Fabricator in the menu and only Tools on the icon.

I do like that grass, Kid. :) Wood Alloy is good future material. But, what does it get used for? Is it replacing iron for tools?
Another suggestion for the tailor is the word, "clothier". It is real word meaning one who makes or sells clothing.
Wood Alloy is (to be) a material made of Wood and Minerals.
It will be used for construction. ALL buildings will need it.
Except for the starter survival pods and the first Mud Works.
They are there so you can survive the first years. Free to build.
I found that I was already having the main material (soil) for
making glass. I added glass to all buildings and domes.
Maybe it's me but "fabricator" sounds like a good name for the Tailor, you know, FABRICator. Just me. Shaper for the tools. etc.

Hospital -> Health Rejuvenation Center or Rejuvenator Station

I agree, Kid, that since there needs to be shorter names to fit on icons, calling buildings something simple is best. So, "Tools", and "Clothes" are good names.

I actually started to make two rows of letters on the icons.
Once you know what it is, no one cares about it anyway. :)

I, being Pagan, usually don't use churches, but, for those that do, don't use a cross or anything religion specific. Just a building, you can call it something like Meditation Center or Enlightenment Center, or something like that.
Oh, and don't forget a simple well, could be like a pipe in the ground.
I agree with that, Enlightenment Center or The Light or something - maybe glass roof no cross. And I think cemetery with jars or urn or pods instead of crosses if possible. Preserver Center ??? ;D
Cemetery could be Memorial Pods, or something.
How about some sort of a dropship or landing craft with a beacon tower to represent a nomad attractor?

The church could be called Retreat Center. Or, just Retreat as you have it.

What about Respite Doom or Respite Pod ? - Retreat sound too religious. Retreats here usually refers to a place you go to stay for a weekend or several days to pray and restore the spirit.

I still like Retreat Center for the church. There are many kinds of "Retreats" in the US and elsewhere. An acquaintance of mine goes on writer's retreats, where there is nothing religious about it- just a get away for people to focus on writing and renewing their inspiration. Not far from where I live, there is a place called a retreat center, and they host weddings, conferences, and other special occasions in a more rural setting. The word retreat just means getting away from things.

Question regarding the trader. Since his appearance can not be changed can it be made invisible? That way a landing dock could be created along the river with a dummy trade landing ship on it permanently.
I can only change the texture of the trader.
I tried to make him invisible, but I got a shadow of the boat remaining.
It looked weird. I have no access to the model files...
Tube houses look good, but it is different from what I have started with.

Starting woodcutters could give little so colonists would be forced to switch to batteries instead. Perhaps the converter idea could come handy here. Mineral extractor could produce more than one item and one of them would be used in making the batteries.

Well now. I like the idea, but I am not sure I want to add batteries as fuel.
It could be worth a try to reduce deforestation.
If this works out, we get building materials and fuel from the soil.
Endless production. It is tempting.

I also want input on the building requirements. Now I have wood, wood alloy, and glass
in most buildings. Maybe I should skip wood, and only use wood with the Extractor?

I was against it at first, but I saw no other possibility.
Here you have the Mothership. Either landed or crashed, as ghosted deco.
It is big enough to cover part of the river entrance. The trader looks like
he is coming from the Mothership.

Planetbase game uses bioplastic as one of building materials. It is produced from starch.
Other materials could be: titanium/titanium alloy, graphene, silicon
You could also retexture the round greenhouse from the Fairy Tale mod. I think it would fit perfectly in a space colony setting.
Never mind the Planetbase game, but starch... It makes me think.
I could use grass fibers as an alternative to wood.

What about iron processed into steel for building material - I always think metal when I think space.
Another thought, maybe consider a space ship that is a boarding house (free-to-build) and a flag that is the nomad attractor. It will take awhile to process materials and build housing.
When I think space, I think two climates - far out in space too cold or too hot closer to the sun. All snow, no snow
I can add those climates.

the same material. I have chosen to have some variations and colors.
It will maybe not be a real space mod. Banished has too many limitations.
But at least it is a fantasy mod with a space theme.

Are the tunnels connected to the buildings or are they separate pieces? If separate then there is option to have connected or not, would have more replayability.
All tunnels are separate and free.
The buildings are made to work separately too.

I think livestock under a dome would be good. Maybe a ghosted cover so one can have the animals enclosed or not.

In hydroponic cultivation, the water solution (nutrient medium) is delivered directly to the root environment, so no permanent medium is needed. Virtually all types of plants can be grown in hydroponics because it provides everything they need to live. :-\Greeting

The unused stone and rock could be carried to a universal convert and converted to say... composite building materials
I, kind of, do a conversion with wood and soil on the Mineral Extractor.
There will be a lot of processing if I make a converter too.
Maybe I can add stone or iron to the extractor. Just a thought.

About the tunnels or the connections. They are free to build.
I do not like problems with a misplaced piece, and all becomes a mess.
The greenhouse uses glass. Made in the MIneral Extractor. Makes sense.
More plants? ;D Maybe later. I have grass, and it fills out pretty well.
Maybe a bush or two.

I have finally done a small test of Out of This World (see pic) and have a few thoughts and suggestions for a future update. I am wondering if anyone else would agree or have any other thoughts.
My first thought was not enough starting people. Mother Ship is very big, I think it could hold more than 4 couples, maybe 6 or 8 would be better.
Second thought was why do they arrive with potatoes and can plant earth foods in the greenhouse? ??? Maybe those should be all called edibles.
I am thinking OOTW is more of a stand-alone mod so there are 2 things missing. One is a woodcutter for the firewood.
The other is a trading post - called Transfer Station or Supply Dock since Mother Ship is made so it appears that the riverboat is coming from it with supplies. It needs a matching place to dock. I rather like Transfer Station name better.
I think some interesting space colonies could be created with this mod and start. I hope we will see some pictures. Here is mine. I will do a story later this year.
