Title: Abandoned - Newburg - Story 1 - A Whole New World Series
Post by: Abandoned on January 31, 2024, 07:01:57 AM

Intro

This is the 1st story in the Whole New World Series; there will be some connections to the Smallville Series but not many.  I so much wanted to use the latest version of Tom Sawyer's The North mod before I reached the end of that series, but the storylines and path to the end did not lead in that direction.  I decided that if I started a new series, I would start it in The North.  While I was restoring the lost pictures to the Smallville stories, I realized how many pictures were lost from other blogs, pictures of towns using mods I have used little or not at all.  Those mods should be shown here in the blog, so I hope, in the future, to use all or part of CC and RKEC.  I don't know how much I will be able to show on this first North map because many of the North's buildings need raw materials that first must be obtained from a riverboat trader.  This is a whole new world with no riverboat traders and no one to trade with, yet.

Early in the Smallville series it was easy to find a story map I liked and then find a location on my world map for it.  It got more difficult as the towns multiplied; I first found a location on the world map where I wanted the new town to be and then had to find a map with the main river going in the right direction and the starting position on the correct side of that river.  It often took quite a lot of regenerations to find a map.  I will not do that this time; most towns will be somewhere in a designated area like somewhere in the northwest mountains, or somewhere in the swamp.  The 1st town in the New World is Newburg, it is in the north on the main river that runs from north to south.  Year 1 of New World Time (NWT) begins when that settlement is named, but here again, I will not do as I did before; there will be no timeline connecting stories with each other or events.  Each town will have it own time as before, times will overlap with other towns and with Smallville time.

So, somewhere in time, back in Smallville's World, a young couple operated the far north riverboat trade route. They had just reached the North Pole when a fierce storm with gale force winds blew their heavy-duty supply boat further north into a river of icebergs. They were caught in the current and carried onward. At one point they were wedged between the ice blocks and feared they would be crushed.  The blocks shifted with the currant, and they broke free.  The floundering ship just barely cleared the icebergs before it was washed up along shore where the couple was able to abandon ship with what items they could carry.  They traveled on foot many days before they came to a small settlement.

Welcome, Eager Explorer,

Yes, we were amazed to discover that the world was round and not flat.  Jenser and I had our first suspicions when our riverboat got caught in the ice flow.  We had been headed north and had not turned around, but our badly damaged boat was suddenly headed south.  We were lost, nothing looked familiar, there was no going back.  We thought we must be on the other side of the world; it was a whole new world and, like you, my husband Jenser, was eager to explore it.

.... so I hope, in the future, to use all or part of CC and RKEC

I still haven't used everything from CC or RKEC or for that matter embx61 Unified Mod .... I probably would still be using the fountain mod

https://fountainmod.freeforums.net/thread/18/current-fountain-mod-content

But it started to have a few issues after going to 1.0.7

I used parts of CC and RKEC many times in the Smallville series; the full versions ran badly on my laptop.  I have not tried them on my desktop yet.  If not mistaken, fountain mod had issues before 107.

Chapter 1

Lucky for us, our boat got us to shore; we would not have survived the icy river.  As it was, we were near collapse from cold and hunger when we came within sight of a small settlement and the residents came running to help us.  I can't tell you how long it had been since the shipwreck, but the snow was already melted.  The settlement was made up of 4 couples with 3 children.  The couples were our age, actually a bit younger, Jenser was the oldest at age 22. I was only 16, my name is Shie. Like us, they had no other family.  They lost their parents to an epidemic of influenza several years before.  They were Nords, a hardy fair-haired people who were cold resistant, but life was hard this far north.  One of the couples had recently migrated south to escape the cold, we could have their vacant house.  We could help ourselves to whatever we needed from the small storage units they called pit houses.

We found they did not have much.  They had some rye, venison, rabbit meat, turnips, and apples.  There were barley, rye, turnips, and flax seeds.  There were only a few iron bars, iron and stone tools and some reindeer hides that would need tanning.  There were a few linen and wool tunics.  There were a few chickens running loose and a milk cow down past the crop field by an old apple tree.  It looked like there were a couple of walnut trees there too.  Barley was being planted in the field.  There was a sheep run on the hillside closer to town.  The Nords said they had given food to the dwarves in exchange for some iron tools a while back. There's an underground city not far from here.  Yes, dwarves.  Apparently, there were also small groups of Elves, Humans, and Hobbits around too.  The Nords knew of the Christ Child, Santa Claus, and the Wise Nordic Woman; Santa comes once a year but they have not seen the Wise Nordic Woman for a very long time.  They never heard of Smallville, giant frogs, or riverboat traders.  There was no map.  The settlement did not have a name; we could name it if we wanted to.  We called it Newburg.

We tried to be helpful over the summer while we recovered from our ordeal.  It was soon autumn; the shadows were getting longer, and the days were getting shorter.  We helped gather wild foods and branches and wondered if there would be enough food and firewood for the coming winter.

If there was interest, I'd be open to making smaller parts of CC available so one doesn't have to use the whole thing.

Chapter 2

Jenser took his turn tending the sheep.  There were 2 sheep dogs that helped keep the sheep from straying too far from the run.  He saw one of the snowy owls in a dead tree by the big hill there; we often hear the hooting at night.  There was one in the tree by the hedgerow where I picked berries and gathered branches; it was probably watching the rabbits that hid there.

When some of the trees were cut by the sheep run, Jenser saw there were tombstones there.  He thought the cemetery should have a fence.  He also thought there should be a barn for the animals when the temperature dropped down into the teens and our neighbor took the milk cow into his house and another neighbor took in the chickens.  We wondered if any of these animals were getting enough to eat.  The Nords were happy to listen to any suggestions we made; they were not very experienced.  There did not seem to be much that made them happy.

By spring, the chickens were again running free and the cow was back down by the apple tree, and a hunting camp was built there.  A 2nd crop field was cleared and turnips were being planted.  Another pit house was built by the hedgerow which was a bit closer to the crop fields.  Jenser and I had our first child, a baby girl we named Merika.  Shortly after, 9 migrants arrived; there were 7 adults with 2 young children.

Chapter 3

That pit house storage unit needed wood and clay to build, so would new houses.  We had seen a small clay pit north of the town.  We checked all the small stockpiles and discovered that they had an assortment of logs, firewood, branches, stone, boulders, iron ore, and clay.  The iron ore needed to be processed to be usable; the Nords had just begun the process themselves.  They had been getting iron tools and some iron bars from the Dwarves but they have not seen them for quite some time.  The Nords just built a charburner and bloomery.  Charcoal from the burner would go to the bloomery along with the bog iron to produce iron bloom that would go to the smith's workplace to make iron bars.  They could mine for the iron ore but for now there was enough bog iron to be had; there were several bogs scattered around the area.  The Nords told us we could dig peat from the bogs that could be burned to heat the houses like firewood.  We may give that a try but for the time being, there was plenty of branches to collect from the bogs and the forests.  We built a forester's workplace to the north of the clay pit.

We had a few iron tools left and enough stone tool for the newcomers but we were short on clothes.  One of the two hunters set up a campfire near the hunting camp and would make some hide capes before roasting the venison.  The newcomers were still without homes but they were being looked after by the Nords.  We learned that to build frame houses like the ones we already had, we would need not only clay but fittings and pottery as well.  We had the clay and the smith's workplace was just completed.  The smith would use the iron bars already in stock to make the fittings.  A pottery kiln was built next to the clay pit.  While we waited for the fittings and pottery, we would see that the cow and chickens were housed before winter.

Over by the sheep run, an animal pen was built for the cow to graze in in summer, a worker would keep it clean and the fertilizer would go to the greenhouse where we planted the oat, berry, potato, carrot, and onion seeds I brought with us from our sinking riverboat.  The cleaning shed would remove the plant debris from the greenhouse and take it to the barn to feed to the animals in winter.  The cleaning shed worker could also clean the barn of fertilizer.  The cow and chickens and 2 frail sheep were moved into the barn for winter.  There would be milk, eggs, and wool.  The Nords were impressed with our cold-weather year-round food producing system.

It was early autumn and there were crops to harvest, wild foods and firewood to gather, and houses to build.

Chapter 4

It was winter before 2 families with 2 children, and 2 young adult males moved into the longhouse we built.  We thought the longhouse would be quicker than individual houses to build.  One older adult man was still staying with one of the Nord families.  By spring we should have enough fittings and pottery to build those frame houses.  The older man had a goahti built for himself by the kiln and clay pit, but he took the nearby job of forester.  It was late spring of year 3, and before we even began building the houses for those Nords in the longhouse, another group of migrants arrived.

There were 13 of them this time, 3 couples with adult and young children.  We now had 3 more builders and building began in town and by the river.  An older man built a turf house and took over as forester, the turf house across from him housed a husband with his wife who became the fisherman at the new fishing pier.  A young single female built a bait shop next to the pier but she was busy cutting peat to be used as firewood.  There was now a woodcutter in town chopping firewood.  A well, a small turf shed, and a smoker were built near the river houses too.

A young couple built a workplace house by the barley field.  He was from the first group of migrants and she from the second.  They found a large beehive in one of the trees.  We would have honey.  Three frame houses were built in town, one for a young adult male, and one for each of the 2 families with children, 1 with a newborn.   That left 5 adults and 3 children from the first group and 1 adult male from the second group in the longhouse still waiting for houses.

While it's true that MegaMod 07 DecoPack does have the decorative animals, I can't get it to work anymore.  When I load it in game, it crashes every time I click on the Decorations toolbar.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Ou2BvVRIgOX_ERlRtWSm2XORBCLx3Ulj/view?usp=drive_link (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Ou2BvVRIgOX_ERlRtWSm2XORBCLx3Ulj/view?usp=drive_link)

You're welcome to try, but I would load it in a new game to test it because I don't think it will work anymore, and I don't know why.  It's also pretty large, 746MB, and it includes a lot of things that I wouldn't put in a decorations pack if I did one now. Like whole CC Dock set is in there.

Sorry to keep derailing your story.  ;D

I will pass on using MegaMod or Mega Mod Deco.  The deco animals I seem to remember must have been in an earlier version of CC before Journey.  :-\   I will take a look at CC Journey sometime soon to see how it will run on this desktop.

Here's a quick and dirty first pass at an Only Deco Animals pack.

Deco Animals (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1E2my3bT7HZ3xMcjgE5x8vdhCus48e6WW/view?usp=sharing)

I stripped this from MM, so it includes all the deco animals from CC, as well as from a few Kid and Jinxie mods that had some.

I did notice that the CC deco animals had 1 unit of work required to build them, so they won't appear instantly when you place them.  They are otherwise free to build.

Thanks @kralyerg . I will give the Deco Animal Pack a try  :)

@catty-cb  Part of the fun is combining different mods that look well together, player' choice, I end up with each town looking different and having an atmosphere all its own. I never have a problem with conflicts or one thing overwriting something else. No searching through big menus just to find and place one item.  I am not fond of large mods alone, would never use them together even if they would run on my computer.

Chapter 5

There were more newborn that year, one that we did not know who the father was.  In late winter, young Glendalla, who lived in the bait shop, had a baby boy she named Octavion.  At the end of year 4, Newburg had a population of 44, 28 adults and 16 young children.  Jenser and I had been keeping records of all the town's statistics.  We build a mini town hall in the center of town by the well and we took the records with us whenever we had a town meeting there.  Earlier in the year we recorded that 20 migrants came through town on their way south.  We advised them not to go too far; if they ran into trouble, they could call on us for help.

When another group came through in early spring of year 5, we thought it a good idea to build an outdoor classroom like Smallville had to teach a few survival skills to the migrants.  It would be a year or 2 before any of the town's children reached school age but we built the mini classroom right away by the well and mini town hall.  A couple with 2 children decided to stay with us and promptly moved into the longhouse which was empty by then; we had just completed another frame house, and 2 more workplace houses in town.

Although the Nords were healthy and had a more varied diet, they still were not happy.  It had been a cold winter and we did not have warm clothes; we would work on our clothing supply but in the meantime, we built a small sauna near the center of town.  Over by the sheep run and animal pen, we built a tannery.  The animals in the cold north had tougher hides and coarser wool, these raw materials needed processing.  The tannery would make soft leather from cow hides, reindeer hides, or sheepskins; the tailor shop wood make useable wadmal from the raw wool.  The tailor would make clothing from the wadmal, leather, and linen.  We prepared a small crop field next to the tailor and planted flax, across from it we were building a weaver's hut to make linen.

Next to the cemetery we built a workplace chapel hoping it would make the Nords happy once we able to spare a worker to be our cleric.  We were having to reassign workers to jobs that needed doing most; we did not have enough workers for all the jobs that needed doing.  We had to carefully watch our food and firewood supplies.

The greenhouse was giving us a nice variety of food and we had plenty of fertilizer.  We built a 2nd greenhouse by the 1ast one.  When we had more workers, each would get another one.  Behind the new greenhouse we transplanted 2 more walnut trees and another apple tree.  Next to this small orchard, we prepared another crop field that would be planted with rye in spring.  We would have to give more thought to our food and firewood supplies.

Chapter 6

In spring of year 6, we welcomed 13 more migrants, 10 adults with 3 children.  There was not enough room in the longhouse but we needed food and firewood before we could build more houses.  They helped to gather wild foods and firewood often that spring and summer, we were short of both.  One of the migrants became another forester and went to work back by the first one, their work area would overlap.  Between the 2, a hunting workplace was built; there were 2 large herds of reindeer nearby and a large flock of grouse. Two of the newcomers became hunters.

Late autumn had only just arrived when we had the first snow of the season; we immediately assigned another farmer to each field but we lost most of the barley and turnips.  A workplace grinder was built near the barley field but there was not much barley to grind into flour that year.  The rye field was harvested before the snow but it still did poorly.  That field would be planted with more barley the following year.  The greenhouses were doing well.

By the end of the year, our stone supply was very low and our clothing supply had been depleted.  The newly made clothes went out of storage as soon as they went in.  The available surface stone was far from town now and too far to go during the winter months.  We only had 2 available laborers but the farmers could help until spring.

Chapter 7

We needed workers but we were glad that the migrants that arrived in spring of year 7, did not stay.  Our food, clothing, and firewood supply could not support more citizen.  The last migrants were still without houses.  We were surprised at the number of migrants there were here in the north.  The Nords said it is not surprising that the young people wanted better than the constant struggle to survive; when their small settlements could support no more, the young people moved on.  They themselves had been thinking of heading south when we arrived; one couple had already left.  Yes, we got their house.  Now we still had houses to build for the migrants living in the longhouse and for those that were homeless.

We assigned another builder; it had taken awhile for our 1 builder to dig a tiny quarry by the sand pit.  The worker said he would rather dig for stone than carry it so far.  A campfire was built next to the quarry to roast venison.  Nearby, a wind sawmill was built to cut firewood.  The wood cutter from the chopping block found it quicker and easier and it was nicer to work inside than out in the cold.

Work began on housebuilding, and a gatherer's hut was built back by the hunter and foresters.  She was not finding as much wild foods as we had hoped, only blueberries so far, but she was gathering firewood which helped quite a bit.  A marketplace was being built down by the turnip field.  It was close to town and would have more goods in one place than scattered all over in the small storage units.  If the market did not make people happy, then maybe honey mead from the new brewer barrel in town would.

Chapter 8

Things only got worse in year 8.  Food and firewood supplies remained critically low.  The greenhouse and animal barn were short of fertilizer and plant debris.  One woodcutter could not keep up with demand for firewood, another was assigned.   The tailor ran out of wadmal so could not make coats.  Until the hunters had a good hunt, there was no reindeer hides to make into leather.  The flax crop was bad 2 years in a row so there was no linen either.

The smith had been making iron bars but had to stop because more migrants arrived and we were suddenly out of tools completely.  The smith began making iron tools and another worker began making stone tools so a crisis was averted.

The extra workers that arrived help somewhat.  They gathered wild foods and firewood and went to work at the cleaning shed and animal pen.  There were 14 of them, 9 adults with 5 children.  We built a workplace hostel by the river, there was room to house all but one 15-year-old male.  I tried to locate him for the town records and hoped perhaps he had moved in with Glendalla in the bait shop.  I was surprised to find that the girl was still unmarried but had a newborn daughter.  The young man was not there; I found him at the longhouse with the other families from the previous year who were still living there.

The shortages and struggles continued throughout the year and into the next.

Chapter 9

Except for the firewood supply, things did not get much better in year 9, but they did not get worse.  We had some tools on hand, and the tailor began making wool tunics; they were not as warm as winter coats but they were better than nothing.  We had plenty of wool for wadmal and another hunting camp was set up on that side of town which would supply a few more needed reindeer hides for leather-making.

The extra venison and grouse could only help our food supply.  Our barley and turnip harvests were good that year; the 2 farmers per field really made a difference.  We don't know what happened the following year though.  The barley was harvested before the temperature dropped to freezing and the turnips harvest was almost complete, but both crops were much less than the previous year.

We cleared land for another barley field on the other side of the market.  More houses were finally being built; there were still families in the long house and hostel.  Two frame houses and another sauna were built the previous year by the longhouse.  Two workplace houses were built by the new farm field and market in year 10.  Seven more migrants came to town, 4 adults with 3 children, so there were still families needing homes.  There were 57 adults and 47 children needing food.

Don't you have that spot hunter/hunting tool Tom made?  It's fabulous!  You plop that bow and arrow icon among a bunch of deer or grouse and if storage is not too far, that hunter gets so much more food and skins in a matter of minutes than it seems the hunter does in a year, if you find a large number of deer and have storage not far.  Then dismiss it when there are no more animals in the circle. That spot hunter will even get animals on the way to and from a storage barn, not only in the spot circle.  I don't set up a second hunter cabin, but use that spot hunter anytime I see a group of deer or grouse.  Meanwhile, that spot hunter goes to the campfire to roast venison or make hide capes until you plop that spot hunting icon again.

@galensgranny  Yes, Hunting tool is fabulous, I use it and the campfire on almost every map I play.  Here I built the campfire back in chapter 3, I placed the hunting tool several times and all hunters go there, however the game usually moved away before they get there.  I have very few laborers and have had to do a lot of multi-managing, no time to watch for herds, so without the assigned hunters there would be little venison or hides.  Production is low because of unhappiness and uneducated.

Chapter 10

The harvest in year 11 looked like it would be a good one; there was no early frost or snow.  Half the crops were harvested but our food supply was still low.  We had no coats again.  The Nords were still not happy and who could blame them.  The mead was sitting in storage untouched.  Jenser had an idea.  He wanted to build a mead hall but there was no place that would be easily accessible to the most citizens.  I suggested we build a new longhouse by the new farm field, move the family out of the old longhouse and demolish it.  That would be a good spot for the mead hall.  Jenser agreed.

A small workplace cabin was built by the animal pen and another over by the river.  Families from the hostel moved into those and the family from the old longhouse moved into the new one.  Work was very slow; we only had 2 laborers and 1 builder.  We then discovered that we needed tar for the new mead hall.  A tar kiln was built over by the stone quarry.  After assigning a worker, we were left with only one laborer.  The farmers would be able to help once the crops were harvested.  We were always waiting for something, either supplies or workers.  It was a bit discouraging.  Completing the mead hall was going to take a while.

Good thing you are building a Mead Hall (tavern).  In The North, no one is every fully happy unless they live in the radius of a tavern type building that is stocked with either some kind of liquor, or the meat that that can be roasted in the Mead Hall.  But, the roasted meat in the Mead Hall then does not count as food anymore. I messed up and thought it would count as food, so all that venison being roasted in the Mead Hall contributed to my town's lack of food when I thought I should have plenty.

Did you see what Tom posted about happiness in The North?  It can be a pain making sure all the Bannies are living in circles for all the needed aspects. https://www.banishedventures.com/howto-happiness/

Thanks, @galensgranny for posting the link; I did read it before starting the map.  It is a real challenge.  Good to know that roast meat in Mead Hall would not count as food, I will remember that.  I first built the workplace brewer barrel thinking it would count as happiness, but the mead just went into storage and sat there.  I was very glad to discover the Mead Hall would use it.  :)

The happiness isn't challenge enough, I make a storyline that I can't build a trading post yet.  ;D  I discovered some materials must be gotten from trader first before building, even the well needs rope that must be traded for.

I have a plan for story  :-X   ;D

Chapter 11

A family of 5 arrived in the Spring of year 13, we could not turn them away.  We still had houses to build but there was room in both the hostel and the longhouse.  When taking my yearly citizen count, I discovered that Glendalla had a 3rd child.  How could this be.  She was still unmarried and still would not say who the children's father was.  Jenser and I tried to figure it out but couldn't.  She arrived with the 2nd group of migrants 10 years ago.  There were 3 families with children which included 2 adult females and 1 adult male age 13.  There was an adult male age 12 and Andell age 45, and there was Glendalla age 17.  She and Andell were not a couple.  They were among the first to move into houses, he a turf house and she the bait shop nearby.  Well, we would probably never know; hopefully she will tell the children who their father is.  We had business to take care of.

Our clothing supply recovered a little but then the tailor was again out of wadmal; she would have to stop making coats and make wadmal first.  The coat count would drop again.  We built another tailor shop over by the market.  One shop could make wadmal and the other could make the coats.  Hopefully, this would solve our constant coat shortage.  Before we got that problem solve, another arose; we were again out of tools.  The smith had run out of iron bars to make tools and had to switch to making iron bar.  A worker immediately began making stone tools again.

In early winter of year 13, the mead hall was completed.  We were happy to see that the unused barrels of mead made by our small workplace brewer were taken from storage and were being served in the mead hall.  Ale or roast meat could have been made instead.  The gathering place and mead did make some of the Nords happy.  By the beginning of year 14, the town's overall happiness rose a little bit.

By then we hoped we solved our tool problem like we did the tailors.  We built a 2nd smith's workplace not far from the first one.  One would make the iron bars and one would make tools, fittings, or whatever else may be needed.   We realized that available bog iron was getting scarce; we may soon need a mine for iron ore.

Did you try kicking Andell out of his turf house to see if he would move in with Glendalla?  Sometimes a family takes up two houses.

No, I didn't, I did not notice it at first.  Whenever I get nomads and they are in temporary housing, I write down the year and families in order - sometimes I take a screenshot.  It is always the same - husband, wife, children, family group together even if just the couple.  Glendalla and Andell were not together as a couple.  Stranger things have happened  ;D  Makes for an interesting tidbit in the story.

Chapter 12

Indeed, the chapel and the mead hall increased the happiness of some folks in town.  Our neighbors to the left of us and their children were completely happy.  Two of our children and myself were also completely happy but Jenser and our 3rd daughter were not.  Neither were our neighbors to the right or the ones across from us.

Another workplace beehive was setup by the barley field to be sure we did not run out of honey for mead brewing.  Over by the grinder, a workplace baker oven was built.  It baked herb bread until we ran out of herbs, then switched to making nut bread with our walnuts.  Our food surplus was higher than it had ever been but the variety for everyone could still be improved.  Folks were happier with a more varied diet rather than eating the same thing day after day.

Our one chapel was filled to capacity so two more were built.  As soon as the one down by the market was completed, our neighbors on the right and those across from us became members and were much happier.  The other chapel was built over by the sawmill and was also immediately filled with members.  There were families still in the hostel next to that chapel; I'm sure they would be happier with houses.

Chapter 13

Two frame houses and a well were built over by the mead hall.  They became happier just moving into their own houses close to the mead hall, chapel, and market.  Another workplace house was built next to the chapel by the market and that family also became happier.

Our tool supply had increased and there were more iron tools than stone tools.  Our clothing supply was lagging behind but it was warm clothes that were being made now.  The tailor often had to wait for linen and would switch to using sheepskins instead.  The weaver's hut was always short of flax, the small flax field was not big enough.  Since our food supply was holding steady and there was enough barley in storage for the grinder to make flour for the baker, we decided that the small barley field by the greenhouses would grow flax this year.  Better tools and clothes were sure to make folks happy.

Our family was completely happy now.  Jenser was happy with his new job as gatherer.  He was now working in the quiet forest gathering wild foods and firewood.  Our house was in a pretty busy area across from the town center with its mini town hall, brewer barrel, and outdoor classroom.  The classroom was our only school and only could teach 5 students at a time.  Our oldest daughter, Merika, did not go to school; the classroom was full when she reached school age.  She really didn't need an education for the jobs she was doing.  The classroom was busier when migrants came to town; a brief course in survival was given to those just passing through, most going south.  There was a lot of coming and going right out our front door.

Jenser had not been happy dealing with the constant food, firewood, tool, and clothing shortages.  Now that those supplies had increased and become more stable, Jenser had mentioned a desire to head south too, do some exploring, see if there were other settlements and possibilities for trade.  Yes, eager explorer, it was something to think about.

Chapter 14

Newburg is actually not a bad place to live and the winters are not all that bad; temperatures are usually in the upper teens and low 20s.  The winter of year 14 was a cold one; it got down to only 4 degrees.  We've had no major storms, the snow falls gently.  The roads are always passable.  The winter days are very short and the nights and the shadows are very long.  It's nice to have the greenhouses and our little chapels.  Workers often stopped in at both for a few minutes just to warm up.  We built yet another chapel over by the apple and walnuts trees; it's in a good spot for the outside workers in that area to take a break.

Summer in Newburg is always pleasant with sunshine and temperatures in the low to mid 60s.  It's been as warm as 67 degrees on more than one occasion.  Autumn is usually a bit chilly and by late autumn winter arrives with cold and snow.  Spring is always welcome when it finally arrives; that spring of year 16 especially, because a 2nd mead hall was under construction over by the river.

Chapter 15

Construction of the mead hall stopped while the builders waited for tar.  It was summer before the building was completed and the mead was brought out of storage.  We had plenty of mead on hand but were not sure how fast 2 mead halls would go through the supply.  We would have to keep a close eye on the brewer barrel and the beehives.  Our overall happiness improved again and we did not want it to drop.

Jesnser spent a lot of time in that mead hall but it was not to drink mead.  He was busy going over boat blueprints with the new boat builder.  One of the woodcutters from the sawmill decided she would try to build some boats.   It should not be too difficult to make a basic riverboat.  Surely there must be a settlement or two downriver where some trading could be done.  A fishing boat might be useful, maybe even a boat like the one we had.  Construction of the first riverboat began immediately.

There were other constructions that had also begun.  Not wanting the town's overall health to drop, an herbalist hut was built over by the cemetery.  A frame house was being build next to it and another one further down the road.  There were several young couples that wanted homes, but both houses were waiting for clay before they could be finished.

The first riverboat was completed and equipped with crates and barrels and a cover for them.  If any young couples wanted to set off on their own, they were being encouraged to settle along a river in the hopes of later being part of a trade route.  Starting supplies would be given to them, just like back in Smallville.  We should start thinking of growing more potatoes.

Chapter 16

We noticed that the harvest of year 16 was not being taken to storage; the half-barrels of barley and turnips were sitting on the fields.  The storage units were full but there was plenty of room in the market but still the crops sat out on the fields.  We assigned another worker to the market thinking to make room in the pit houses, but then it snowed.  We may have lost some crops but our harvest totals were still very good.  We built a small turf storage unit by the herbalist and a log shed down the road closer to the barley field.  The two houses in that area still did not have enough tar on site for the builders to complete their work.   We were also short of bog iron; construction work began on an iron mine north of the foresters.

In spring of year 17, another group of migrants arrived but did not stay; they headed south.  They did not want to take a boat.  Our daughter, Mericka, was concerned every time her father talked about exploring this new world.  She was 15, and old enough to marry.  She was good friends with both Lenaro living next to us and Zollins living 2 doors down, 17-year-old Alvadore, in one of the frame houses behind the mead hall, seemed interested in her.  She said she was not going anywhere.

It was a hot summer with temperatures in the upper 70s.  Work continued on the mine but stopped long enough for the builders to return to the frame houses when the needed tar was finally available.

The two frame houses along that back row were finally completed in autumn. Zollins along with Abigayley moved into one house, and his younger brother, Ranco, moved into the other.  Merika did not seem upset.

  Chapter 17

In winter of year 17, Kamersalda, the hunter from the hunting camp was killed by a bear.  We were not aware of any bears in the area.  Neither of the hunters, up by where the mine was being dug, had ever seen one, and Kamersalda never mentioned ever seeing a bear or any sign of one.  Thinking it may have come from the southwest valley, we decided to build another hunting camp by the southwest barley field.  One less hunter would work in the north forest, we did not have many spare workers.

Kamersalda was Alvadore's mother, and she left behind 2 other children ages 13 and 2 and a 29-year-old husband.  They were among the migrants that arrived in year 8.  Our daughter, Mericka, moved into the household soon after Kamersalda's passing, and took over her job as hunter.

It was not clear to us just who our daughter was living with, Alvadore or his father; she claimed she was there to help take care of the 2-year-old toddler but we were not so sure. She would say no more.  There had been some speculation that there had been trouble in the marriage a few years ago but the couple had reconciled and had another baby.  Merika could not have been involved; she would only have been 12 or 13 at the time.  Again, she would not say.   She did say we should not worry; she would still look after her 2 sisters until we returned should we go off exploring.

It was only a short time later that Windel the farmer died unexpectedly.  He left behind a wife, a married daughter, a 9-year-old daughter, and a 2-year-old son.  Windel, his wife, and oldest daughter were with the migrants that arrived in year 2.

The iron mine was completed in the following year.

Chapter 18

Well, believe it or not, eager explorer, but in that first group of migrants with Windel and his wife, was Flemingo, the 39-year-old man who went off by himself and built the goahti up by the clay pit.  In the summer of year 18 that goahti was demolished.  In its place was built a frame house.  It was thought Windel would move into the longhouse or hostel until the new house was completed for him but instead, he moved in with Windels' widow, Amera. Maybe he was happy now.  And of course there was talk.

There was another frame house and a stew pot built up where Flemingo's goahti used to be.  Rabbit stew was soon bubbling in the pot for all the outside workers up in that area.  There was only 1 miner assigned to the new iron mine, and another worker got a forester's workplace overlapping the other 2.  The mine would need a supply of logs and tallow to expand the shafts.  There were plans for a few workplace houses, another mead hall, and a 5th chapel.  The town's overall happiness dropped a little bit for reasons unknown.

Jenser and I were happy to have our 4th daughter, Arete, in late autumn.  Jenser said not to worry, when we go exploring, she and her sister Amia will go with us.  Sharmaniel would be starting school next year if there was room.  She would remain here with her older sister, Mericka.

Chapter 19

There would definitely be room for more students in school the following year; a workplace schoolhouse was built where the small flax patch used to be.  The weaver thought she would have enough flax from the larger patch alone; production had improved.  If not, we could always find room for another patch somewhere.  There would be room for 12 students in the new school.

The new chapel over by the forest and mine was completed in spring of year 19 also; 26 members immediately joined.  There was still not enough room for all the citizens in our 5 chapels.  It would be nice to have a large church someday.  The 3rd mead hall was completed by summer; we had plenty of mead in stock.  Our iron was a bit low so another miner went to work in the mine and a bit more bog iron was gathered from distant bogs.

We had a good supply of fertilizer on hand, more than enough for another greenhouse.  One was built by the new chapel along with a log shed.  Our storage units were again nearing capacity. It would be nice to have a large storage barn someday, but for now everyone would have a full pantry including the 3 young single males that moved into the workplace cabins that were built on the other side of the new mead hall.  The boys were ages 13 and 14 whereas Alvadore, who was still living at home with his father and our daughter, was 19.

Chapter 20

It was another long dark winter but now it is spring again and the days are longer and brighter.  We are so proud of our new town in the north and how it has grown.  We have a large market, 3 mead halls, 5 chapels, a wind sawmill, 3 greenhouses, an animal barn, a boat builder, and 46 homes.  The population in spring of year 20 is 145, 86 adults, 9 students, and 50 children.  Everyone is healthy, and happiness has greatly improved from what it was when we arrived.  We have every confidence that the 4 families who were here when we arrived will be able to see to it that the town will continue to thrive.

That's right, eager explorer, we decided it is a good time to go off and do a bit of exploring.  Our oldest daughter, Mericka, will stay in our house with her sister, Sharmaniel, who is now a student.  The 2 youngest girls, Amia and Arete, will be going with us.  The boat builder has been working on 2 houseboats, one for us and one for you if you care to go exploring with us.  The boats have just been finished and supplies are being loaded, so, eager explorer, we're off to see the world.
