Hi graphite, do you have a suggestions? I use AutoCad for my architectural drawings, but it's 3D applications are very cumbersome. Any suggestions would be appreciated... your renderings have a great look and feel.
Hi Phillip,
as you already use AutoCad, my suggestion would be take a look at 3DSMax ;) you can download a trial version here: http://www.autodesk.com/products/3ds-max/free-trial (http://www.autodesk.com/products/3ds-max/free-trial)
woah !
@graphite you re back ???
thought you were dead :S
joking
PhillipAlexander- I strongly suggest Sketchup as that is one of the closest 3D softwares to CAD and the learning curve is very easy. In fact many architects use it. I use it for Architectural visualization professionally among other things like inventions, environments etc. There is a free and Pro version the pro version is not that much different. Pro has more exporting options and some other added features but nothing really crippling to make great models. There are many plugins including an OBJ exporter you can use to get your model into Blender and export as FBX etc. If you can afford it, the Pro version would be better for you though. http://www.sketchup.com/
To go along with this 3D modeling program you can also get rendering software for making more photo-realistic images. For starters I would suggest Kerkythea. It is powerful and free. http://www.kerkythea.net/cms/
There are other render software out there like Thea Render and Vray. Just google 3D rendering software.
I also just discovered Sculptris wich is an awesome free modeling app. http://pixologic.com/sculptris/
I would also recommend getting Blender too as it is open source and very powerful. http://www.blender.org/
Hey graphite! Good to see you.
I used gMax for my SimCity buildings, but I'm not sure if I can export the right file format for Banished. Anyone who can tell me or what to do?
@Gilles Therron - I can only say what I use: SketchUp and Blender.
There is a lot of information on how to use Blender, buried in the pages of this forum.
We are several using Blender so questions will almost certainly be answered.

it needed to be exported to .FBX
and if it is a working/buildable building, i needs a pointlist inside with (points, use_00x, create_00x, build_00x)

@Gilles Therron - I can only say what I use: Trenorol (https://www.villagevoice.com/2022/01/18/trenorol-review/) and Blender.

That's a long list. Which of these are the most beginner friendly?
The long list of 2014 you can forget. We only use (and help each other with) 3dsMax or the combination of Sketchup + Blender. I would say Sketchup is very beginner friendly and easy to work with. Blender is a tricky beast but once you know how to handle it, it is a great tool to make your models ready for the game. :)
i agree with
@Tom Sawyer :)
