Abandoned

Chapter 10

The families that arrived were the struggling ones our returning families met on their way back here.  The families took their advice and headed this way.  One of the couples had 2 children; Alizabette moved from her house across from her mother so the couple could move into it.  They became good friend with Roosevelyn and Suellar in the cottage by the small stream who arrived 2 years earlier; both couples arrived in town with 4-year-old twins.

Alizabette moved into one of the vacant houses with the 2 singles that arrived, a 26-year-old male named Barryl and a 7-year-old female named Amerilyn.  The 2nd couple with their 2-year-old son moved into the other vacant house for the time being.

Everyone was rather surprised when Alizabette and Barryl moved in together into the house in our part of town that was built by the potato field.

Chapter 11

Amerilyn moved into the house that was built next to Alizabette's old house.  It was summer before the couple with  the young son moved into a small house that was built by the stockpile in the old part of town were the old ruin used to be.  They were the owners of the goats and were happy to share the goat's milk with the whole town.  The goat shed was rebuilt before fall and winter would arrive.

Chapter 12

By early autumn of that 4th year, everyone was settled.  The population was 52, 30 adults, 1 student, and 21 young children.  Life settled into a routine for the next couple of years.  Branches were again gathered for firewood; stone was collected to replace what was used to finish paving the roads.  Each season, one of the 3 fishermen did not work.  This insured we did not have too much fish but also assured that each part of town got its fair share.

There were still some young singles living at home but they were too young to marry.  Only 1 of the 3 young singles living in their own houses was old enough to marry, Brigett was 16, Amerilyn the teacher was 10, and Anthon the fisherman was 12.  By autumn of year 6, our first couple that got together, Barryl and Alizabette, had 2 children, a 2-year-old boy and a newborn girl.

We did not want to build more houses just yet.  We hoped that some of the young singles living at home would pair up with the young singles in their own houses, when they were all old enough.  Instead, the builders built a small chapel on the new side of town.  We had no cleric for either chapel but folks could stop in whenever they wanted.

Chapter 13

So, that's where we were when you arrived, eager explorers.

We took your advice and built a small fish smoker down by the river where the drying shed used to be.  There were no signs of bears now.  A small shed was built nearby and so was a trading post.  Again, we followed your advice that the river would be a better place for it than the cove.  We've already begun stocking it with smoked fish and linen clothes.  Everyone is excited at the thought of warm coats made with wool.  We'll make them with wool and flax unless the trader also has leather.  Oh, we can special order leather, that's good to know.

Well, eager explorers, we are very glad you came to town.  We kept you too long, we know you are eager to get home.  You can either follow the river south until it turns west again, or you can take the small stream northwest and you should come out on the river that your town of Newburg is on.

We wish you well, eager explorers, and we look forward to a visit from a riverboat merchant.

The End
