About Saved Game Files

Hi,
Can saved game files be renamed and still be accessible to load via the game or do I need to just create a text tile somewhere and make notes such as:

   
• Save1 = Before Town Hall crash
• Save2 = Prior to 30+ population die-off

Also: Do I need to manually save the game before I hit the exit or quit buttons or does hitting those buttons automatically cause an auto-save to happen?
