Title: The Mission - very much a WIP
Post by: kid1293 on September 12, 2016, 09:03:03 AM
The Mission

Loosely based on San Buenaventura Mission in California.
I am very much in the beginning of this excursion into the past.

I have made the church and some buildings. Kind of rowhouses. :)
There are also 'passageways'. Roof covered roads to be exact.
Can be built pretty much where you want. Right now there are
straight, L-junction, T-junction and crossroads.

There are straight,  L and T for the small houses.

Also a 6x3 large house that fits in with the grid.

All small parts sit on a 3x3 grid so you can turn and build things many ways.

I plan for at least a school and an infirmary and maybe some production chain.

edit: There are 2 versions of the church, one with nomads and one without.

Wonderful, and so fast! Just one comment the cross on the church could be more contrasting and larger, its almost invisible. I like the stone texture and the roof tiles too!  :)

Thanks, but don't count the polygons.  ::)

By contrasting cross I can think of white or black.
White seems a bit 'pure advertisement' on this old church.
I go for darker and a bit bigger.

Post by: Denis de la Rive on September 12, 2016, 10:11:01 AM
I think that would work, or possibly a bronze or gold also.  :)
Title: Re: The Mission - very much a WIP
Post by: kid1293 on September 12, 2016, 10:13:35 AM
I tested and color change was only negative,
I kept the original texture but enlarged the cross by 50%.

No, no gold or bronze. I don't want it gaudy.

Wow. That looks good. It has a nice southern atmosphere. I like these roofed roads. Should be a nice effect in game. Great texturing. Only the walls of the church could be a bit finer (smaller). The cross on the gable has the right size and color (metal) for me. But this is all a matter of taste. This stuff could encourages me to make a southern landscape.^^

Yes, a land with the right climate and sunshine to grow much agave/tequila and other tasty things. Then you can sell it to merchants and they ship it to the North. And vice versa with Nordic stuff...^^

@Tom Sawyer - What did you mean with 'finer walls' ?

Did you think of the texture?
Yes, it was coarse and my first intention was to make this mod
in a very poor corner of banished land. But I changed my mind.
I don't want perfect, but somewhere in between.

Check this. The sun came out when I tested wall textures and
suddenly the church felt 'whole'  ( wholy ? ) :) :)
So I decided that - this is it!
No more work on the church if I don't need to.
Title: Re: The Mission - very much a WIP
Post by: Tom Sawyer on September 12, 2016, 02:08:07 PM
No, the texture is a great choice. I meant a smaller structure of the same texture. There are different stretched parts in your uv map. Look at your detailed picture above. The walls at the tower are perfect but the large walls below are too rough. They are squeezed in your uv map and use the same texture. I always keep all faces in the same proportions. It's only a detail.
Title: Re: The Mission - very much a WIP
Post by: kid1293 on September 12, 2016, 02:46:02 PM
There's an explanation for that stretching. I forgot that I
mapped the tower separate from the base.
You have a point, I usually map all parts of one texture
and have them proportional. Now there is no room for
stretching those squeezed parts, so I do the second best.
I map the tower so it is equally rough.
Or I just sleep on it and fix something tomorrow.

edit: I squeezed the tower a bit and maxed everything else
that were with those plaster walls. It's more equal now.
edit2: forgot picture - must be tired :)

The Mission Pre-Beta

I might as well let you in on this. Just for testing.

Remember two things.
One - it's sometimes hard to choose the right f-key variant of
small houses and passages. You will curse me for this...
Specially in a snow storm :)

Two - it can be temptating to build a lot of passages, either as
roads or between houses, but it can spoil the feeling if you have
too much red roof. Just a warning.

End piece already planned. (or two - left and right)
I got diverted and made a school instead.

Yeah, school is good - I immediately wanted one in the compound...  ;D

I was wondering about the Open Passage - could one module be storage, or some other functionality? Now it is an awful lot of "empty" real estate...  ;)
Title: Re: The Mission - very much a WIP
Post by: kid1293 on September 14, 2016, 06:32:41 AM
Yes, it could be storage but how do you 'pass' through that? :)

Just kidding - I can make some storage modules.
I think corner, straight and ends. Not the T- or L-junction because
people go there. What will we have in storage?
Fuel, Food, Tools ?

Had a bright idea. Let them function as 'passageways'
but pile up some crates and barrels in each of the four corners.

Well, to stay with the mission theme I'd expect mainly for food, to store their agri harvests... can you store fruit_only?

Quotepile up some crates and barrels in each of the four corners.
Yeah, that crossed my mind too...  ;)

When this is finished, it would be worth to be a starting condition... ::)

Starting with almost nothing, needing nomads to come. Well...

Maybe different climate. Tom Sawyer mentioned that.

As a sidethought I can think of tequila and maybe make some connection.

I need a doctor's building but all I can come up with is locked in this
grid-system. So maybe a completely freestanding infirmary.
You need some space if you don't want the whole population to be sick.

Things look good right now. I decided to make ALL passages as storage-version.
Since you can walk through it doesn't matter.

I re-textured large residental house to be similar to the small one (small windows)
and changed the old house a bit to become a school extension.
School 24 students - extension 12 students, but you can build as many extensions
as you need.

It sure looks like it is going to be a mission. :)

That gate and the minaret in the background,
I guess southern Spain at the time of the Moors?
Nice idea of a closed compound.

The Mission Beta 01

With new storage space under roof.
School plus school extension.
Added end pieces of small house.
Some tweaking to the textures.
You will find out. :)

I like the shape of that building. Could look even better with a little ground-level planter box/garden bed running around the round/octagonal part. You don't have to fill it with plants, we can add ghost bushes etc. Could that be an F variant?
Title: Re: The Mission - very much a WIP

Sorry, I have squeezed the footprint to minimum.
There is simply no space to put a flowerbed.
Only beside the door but I left it as road tiles for
possible ghost decoration.

edit : Here - test it if you want. You can build a fence
with some flowers on the inside.

A ghost flowerbed set would be good. There are already those CC ones but they won't fit around a building like this. Plus not everyone uses CC.

Well, I put some static flowers by the door.
You can see them in the corner of the picture.
You have to be satisfied with that.  :D

This is as far as Version 1 goes.
The file is probably in download later today.

Maybe some production will fit in for a V2.
I have to think about that. :)

If you look in 'Tiny Thoughts' thread you find a pdf-file
with the mission layout in 1818.
You can see it's possible to recreate the mission rather
faithfully with the buildings in this mod.
The church is much longer in the layout. Being that
long does not fit the game, so I shortened it.
Also there are no passageways. Just my imagination. :)

Ah. I post it here too. Easier.

You are right @Denis de la Rive. This is an amazing mod.

@kid1293 : About that wall to the left of the church entrance. Is there any special meaning to it, historicaly speaking? It looks a bit redundant. Or perhaps just a little too massive visually.
Title: Re: The Mission - very much a WIP
Post by: kid1293 on September 16, 2016, 02:48:37 PM
@Gatherer
The wall is hollowed out to be a seating place.
What's the original meaning to it, I don't know.

if you look at Architectual Drawings (http://www.missionscalifornia.com/gallery/gal_architectural-drawings.html-1)
you can see that it is built to keep the entrance in balance vs. the bell tower. The door is centered.

edit: found an old drawing. you can clearly see the seating place

@Paeng
I don't know how much historical fact there is in this.

Here is a small 'Quiet Garden' with a very special tree.
The water pool works as a well to extinguish fire.
It is 9x9 tiles and as you can see you can
connect to pathways on all four sides.

Edit: After thinking I added a f-key version without the 'fence'.

Sound like the mission is expanding.  ;D

Not now, there is a tree there and it needs sunlight.
But I can think of many places with a roof. :)

Next up is a hostel 9x3 with a low second floor on the five middle tiles.
Should be easy now when I have speed up.

I wouldn't mind... and for some of the more utilitarian structures you could use different textures, even the thatch... e.g for a small barn, mission style but thatched...

Oh, I meant to ask - would you consider working a little on the residential doors and windows? When we zoom out they look a bit like black holes...  ;)

A little bit better. I have enhanced the frames to make them stand out more,
and in general added color and light to the windows.
If I lighten the windows more they become 'cloudy' and that does not look nice.

Again you shine, as for historical, well its probably been done somewhere, I was watching a doc on Pompeii last night and behold something like your barbecue stand exists there! It was part of an upscale spa, but sold on the street directly. Never let your imagination be held back by what is historical or not, Banished can be anywhere from year 1000 to 1900 in time span.  ;)

I can solve it, but my mind is not there. A lot of angles to get right...

Looking good. Decorative structures are always welcome. For the garden, how about a garden with a wall and roof? Maybe with some empty "windows" or archways in it. Or you could make some tall (and also short) wall pieces with little bits of roof on them. For use anywhere, around orchards, fields, graveyards, production buildings, wherever.  :)

Edit: I posted this without seeing your pic. Looks good. I can definitely see this with stone walls or stone pillars instead of the wooden frame, with archways. I was also picturing some thin walls (single tile wide, just like all the other walls available already) with a thin cap of tile.

The hostel and quiet garden, what wonderful additions to a great mod, can't wait. Can the quiet garden be used to grow crops, protected from hot sun and wind or from the colder mountain climates, like a green house. My Mountain Mission map had most settlers living and working near shore but went to the mission for church, school, and supplies, like going to an oasis with covered walkways.  A tailor would fit in nicely with that scenario, the mission looks wonderful in that setting, like a sanctuary in the snow.  Would it be possible to add the sound of church bells?
Title: Re: The Mission - very much a WIP
Post by: kid1293 on September 29, 2016, 02:59:45 PM
Church bells are maybe possible, but I will not try it.
They may get annoying after some time.

As to the climate - it's global. It's nothing I can change with
a garden or a greenhouse.

I have lost a lot of time today, had to take care of things I had put aside.
The fence/walls are coming, but slowly.

A tailor is probably needed in the mission complex. I am not sure if he/she
should make any new clothes. We have a very good linen weaver with
New Flora mod and the vanilla clothes are a good basic outfit.
I thought of a wool weaver, but the vanilla tailor makes that automatically.

Well this is another fine mod that we can have a lot fun playing around with. If your new additions are save compatible I don't see any reason you can't update as much as you like and not feel rushed to add more things. If the updates are not save compatible then people may not wish to place it in their current games until it is basically complete.

I always like that you add new things to your mods. :)

Those walls look really good.  :)

For bell sounds, I don't know what can be done but there is a wind sound removal mod here: http://banishedinfo.com/mods/view/627-NoWind

I don't know how it works or if it's possible to replace one sound with another. It would be an interesting addition if it could be done but I do understand that there are many things that can't be done with mods.

About the wind sound -
If I put a church bell like that it will chime all the time.
I think it gets pretty annoying after a while.
I'll check if there is any way to add a sound to the church building.
That way you have to be close to church to hear it.

I put the latest version into the game last night, it loaded fine into my Mountain Mission saved game without a problem.  The new walls are great, they look especially nice around the grape orchard, matching the wood grape support towers nicely.  A half-barrel wine press or something small and similar would look nice, the winery I downloaded with the grapes would be way too big for the mountain setting and would look out of place with mission and poor part of town, but my hungry people are eating the grapes as soon as picked so all is well.  The 2 story hostel is a wonderful addition also, it's ready and waiting for nomads.  Love the f-key choices for the quiet garden.  Thanks again for this wonderful mod.

Regarding church bell, if possible, perhaps a separate bell piece that sounds when near that player could chose to use or not use with the set.  I just saw estherhb posted a mission picture in the sightseeing section.  There is a rather large separate bell tower in the picture, I asked if it has a bell sound.

I want to stay clean and offer only things that don't flag red.

What I know now is that I can not attach a sound to a building like
a church or a bell tower. Tom Sawyer said it is maybe because the game
is limited to a few places where there is a sound.

@Abandoned - I would like some pictures. That's always nice. :)

Right now I have taken a break from the mission mod but I think of
more buildings. It's the many similar roofs that stops me right now.
But with a gentle hand you can make a nice mission outpost.

A new roof style maybe? Wooden shingles or thatch? Maybe your production buildings could have a different look or colour to avoid everything looking the same. But I do love the consistency that you have created with this mod. The buildings look like they belong together, exactly as they should do. Take a break and think about it. You can be very proud of what you've already done with this.  :)

I wouldn't worry about red flags. Most of the time they aren't a problem.

Thank you for the extra effort, bell sound would have been nice but mod is wonderful as is.  I too like the roofs matching, in fact the winery where I got the grapes has a similar colored roof that fits in well although takes up more space than I would have liked.  I am just beginning and trying out different mods and what goes well together but I know your Mission will be one of my favorites. After more trial and error I may post pictures.  Thank you again.

I follow elemental's advice and take a break.
Thoughts are spinning round so fast right now,
it can be a mess if I continue.
Version 1.1 in download is exactly the same as
the pre-release I had here.

Hi, kid1293.

Mission Blacksmith has only 'Iron Tool' and 'Steel Tool'.
It would be nice if Mission Blacksmith had 'Hardened Tool' too like Colonial Hardware Store.

And why did you add herb?
I couldn't find any difference betweeen your model and  BlackLiquid's model.

Yes, for a future update I can add 'hardened tools'.

I must have confused herbs with onions or mushroom. I remember one of them had a
not so nice 'cultured' version. Long time since I used CC stuff.
Anyway - the herbs are there and I want them integrated in mission mod.

If I remember correctly, CC herbs was an add-on?
If you get double of them, don't load their herbs.

I'm fairly sure the herbs crop is no longer an add-on to CC but has been included as standard. I'm playing with the 6million lettuce add-on so I don't mind an extra herb or two.  :)

@lyonlee - I put Hardened Tools into mission blacksmith.
Version 1.21 is in download. Should be completely safe in a save-game.

I feel rather satisfied with the Mission right now and do not plan to expand.
Bug-fixes and cosmetic tweaking will be done, but for now I think it is
mission accomplished!  8)
