Abandoned

Intro

This is the 27th story in the New World Series.  Two eager explorers entered the magic portal in Huts by the River of story 26; the same portal they arrived there by.  They had no idea where they would end up in the continued search for malfunctioning portals that the Elves at Rainbow Falls showed them in their crystal ball.  When they stepped out of the portal this time, their first thought was "where in the world are we!"

Sorry if I startled you earthlings by beaming you up into the hoverer, but you were in a dangerous area and far from our settlement.  We thought that structure was some type of teleporter and have been monitoring it since we arrived here.  Also sorry to tell you that you are no longer in your world; look there, there is your planet earth and its moon that gives us light.  Buckle-up, earthlings, I'll take you to our settlement; we call it Moonglow.

Chapter 1

So, you're eager explorers from earth.  We know quite a bit about the planet earth and its earthlings; we even learned your language.  We finally reestablished communications with one of our sisterships that crash landed on your planet some time ago.  We left our home planet in search of intelligent life elsewhere; the people of our planet were destroying the air, water, vegetation, and wildlife.  It took us quite a while to find a planet that had all the necessities we needed to sustain life as we know it.  This planet is quite similar to our motherland.

There to the right you can see our mothership.  I was among the first group to leave the ship, so I can tell you just about anything you want to know.  My name is Elany and my husband is Furmani.  His younger brother who just became an adult, and our 2 children came off the mothership with us.  There aren't many on the ship now, only enough to keep all the systems functional and to manage the supplies.

There is a pod we built next to the ship where those coming off could stay until a house was ready for them; they would get their job assignments there too.  I'll land the hoverer near it; you can stay there for the time being.  The oxygen level here is similar to your planet so you should have an easier time acclimating than we did.  I'll let you get settled a bit before taking you on a tour of Moonglow.

Chapter 2

The first thing we did when we got off the ship was to build a stockpile and start gathering building materials, and wild foods.  We had 3 carts of supplies we brought from the ship.  Two hunters went after the large group of oinkers that approached.  Yes, just like the ones you see here.  Wild boar?  You have them on earth too; we had them back in the Motherland.

Just past the oinkers, you can see the 2 survival pods we built right away.  They are small but are environmentally controlled for temperature and oxygen.  The fisherman and other workers had to take frequent breaks.  We also built some colorful little houses which did not require special materials to build; some were two-stories for 2 families.  My family lives in the single-story yellow house.  Yes, the colors do match the vegetation nicely.  The trees keep their leaves year-round and get their color from the minerals they absorb from the ground.  Our analysis found traces of turquoise, purple amethyst, amber, emerald, ruby, crystals, moonstone, and diamond dust.  We were most interested in the crystals that power our spaceship and equipment; we also use them to make temperature resistant solar glass.  You don't say, a race of elves on earth use crystals to cast spells?  I'm not surprised; gemstones have many powers and magical energies and properties, and they sure make our landscape look beautiful.

The colorful forests here are a bit deceptive.  The trees are somewhat top-heavy like a canopy; there is less wood than you would think.  We built a forester right away back in the clearing so new trees would be planted as soon as possible.  A gatherer's pod was built nearby to collect wild food; our food supply was very low. It was too late in the season to plant corn in the field we prepared.

Chapter 3

By spring of the following year, we had a crystal works built next to the stockpile and glass production had started.   On the other side of the stockpile, a coal extractor was built; it would use the coal it dug up along with wood and iron to make steel.  We needed structures that would hold up under our harsh weather conditions.  It gets extremely hot in summer and extremely cold in winter.

Out here in space you have to be prepared for everything; we built a small cemetery near the farm fields.   A second crop field had been prepared, and both were planted with corn.  Our food surplus was non-existent, we could not wait till harvest, we had to go out and gather wild foods.  The supply of food and resources on the mother ship was also very low.

Five adult workers came off the ship in late spring, a family of four and a single adult male.  The family built a colorful house next to the crystal works and the adult male built a small house back by the forester pod.  Having steel and glass also allowed us to build a large storage depot and a fabricator to make coats.  We would need tools soon but would need more steel than what we had; there was some glass on the stockpile but not enough for our needs.

Chapter 4

We built a loading dock directly across the lake from the mother ship.  A supply boat could easily go back and forth between the two with supplies; we needed to restock the mother ship, and there were supplies we could only get from it.  The supply boat brought out seeds we couldn't use yet; we did not have any climate-control hydro pods built yet; the growing season was very short. We did however have a covered bridge built across the small stream to where we planned to build the pods.    Later the supply boat brought us some synthetic wool for making warm coats.  We sure needed them.

Even after our corn was harvested, our food surplus was non-existent.  Everyone went out to gather wild foods before they would be buried in the snow.  The area across the bridge had quite a bit of foods and herbs to gather.

It was autumn and it already snowed by the time the tool implementer began making iron tools.  It already was dark most of the time.   We only get direct sunlight for a short time in summer which raises the temperature significantly.  The rest of the year the only light we get is a reflected glow from your moon.  The moonglow sure makes our mountains look beautiful.
