You can have truss bridges without the top.

Also people have always walked across railway bridges (even when not supposed to). :-)

it is just .... i added like one third of height (train engine should not still pass lol) and one quarter larger (width)

I think that this is not quite right. It looks good, but the point of the Trusses is to reduce the number of peers under the bridge. There should only be peers at the end of each truss, and they should be bigger.

looking back at the pictures, I'm thinking maybe larger horizontal beams under the railway tracks? Towards the outer edge of the tracks.

In the pictures you've taken inspiration from, they are made of Steel, In the game I think bigger log beams, and make the railway bridge expensive to build in wood, as well as stone.
The stone pillars look good though, looks better this way than the many wooden uprights.

to better judge the beams... maybe ingame and check can give a better opinion though. sometimes can be hard a bit like that on pictures we cant zoom in.
